Changes In Hutterite House Types: The Material Expression Of The Contradiction Between "Being-On-The-Colony" And "Being-In-The-World" (Communitarian, Utopias, Marxism, Interactionism)., John Ian Francis Melland Jan 1985

Changes In Hutterite House Types: The Material Expression Of The Contradiction Between "Being-On-The-Colony" And "Being-In-The-World" (Communitarian, Utopias, Marxism, Interactionism)., John Ian Francis Melland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Hutterite society, tradition has dictated "what ought to be." This view of reality emphasizes simple living and avoidance of the world and is reflected in ascetic colony housing. However, as more areas of Hutterite life change in response to attempts to increase economic production, it is difficult to maintain avoidance as an ideal. As the gap between "idea and reality" increases, tradition is undermined, and on many colonies, normative validity claims are no longer unquestionable. Consequently, colony leaders are now confronted with demands for participation and collective consumption, especially for modern and more-private housing. This study explains how Hutterite …

Organizational Characteristics Affecting Ratee Perceptions Of The Appraisal Process And Ratee Intentions To Change (Performance Appraisals)., Stephanie Jeanette Platz Jan 1985

Organizational Characteristics Affecting Ratee Perceptions Of The Appraisal Process And Ratee Intentions To Change (Performance Appraisals)., Stephanie Jeanette Platz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To evaluate an expanded version of Ilgen, Fisher, and Taylor's (1979) model of feedback effectiveness, measures of organizational characteristics, ratee perceptions of the appraisal process, and ratee intentions to change were collected from paying and receiving tellers (n = 163) in three banking institutions. Regression analysis indicated that four organizational characteristics: (a) openness surrounding the appraisal process, (b) frequency of evaluation, (c) participation in the performance feedback session, and (d) quality of the rater-ratee relationship were significantly related to ratee satisfaction with the appraisal process which, in turn, influenced (a) ratee intentions to turnover and (b) ratee intentions to file …

Surface Landau-Level Resonance In Silver., John William Mitchell Jan 1985

Surface Landau-Level Resonance In Silver., John William Mitchell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Local values of the Fermi velocity of Ag are determined along the central zones of the (100) and (110) sample planes and at the neck in the (111) plane. Resonance spectra of magentic field induced quantum surface states, known as surface Landau-level resonances (SLLR), are used along with geometric factors calculated from analytical expressions for the Fermi surface to determine the location and Fermi velocity of the resonant electrons by an iterative process. These velocities are compared to those previously derived from inversions of cyclotron mass data and to point measurements made in the time of flight effect. In addition, …

Poetry In Process: Elizabeth Barrett Browning And The Sonnets Notebook., Phillip David Sharp Jan 1985

Poetry In Process: Elizabeth Barrett Browning And The Sonnets Notebook., Phillip David Sharp

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To date, the examination of Elizabeth Barrett Brownings' composition and publication history has been hampered by the inaccessibility of the manuscripts and corrected proofs that were sold at public auction following the death of the Brownings' son in 1913. This examination of the "Sonnets" manuscript notebook at the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University, then, sheds new light on Elizabeth Barrett Browning's literary interests and activities in the early 1840's as well as on her methods of composition and revision. Each of the twenty-three poems and fragments in the "Sonnets" notebook was written between 1842-1844, years which mark a turning …

Adolescent Suicide And Life Stress, Problem Solving Ability, Suicide Intent, And Hopelessness., Sally Hill Stephenson Jan 1985

Adolescent Suicide And Life Stress, Problem Solving Ability, Suicide Intent, And Hopelessness., Sally Hill Stephenson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Adolescent suicide is a serious problem, yet psychological investigations are limited to delineating effective treatment for suicide attempters. Consideration of those variables which lead to suicide should be included in any effective treatment protocol. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the degree of life stress, hopelessness, and problem solving ability in adolescents who have attempted or gestured suicide. Fifteen high school-aged adolescents who had attempted or gestured suicide and 15 high school-aged adolescents who were hospitalized for acute physical problems, were administered the Hopelessness Scale (Beck, Weissman, Lester, & Trexler, 1974), a modified version of the Life …

Origin And Sedimentary Characteristics Of Discrete Sand Beds In Modern Sediments Of The Central Texas Continental Shelf (Storm, Hurricane, Geostrophic, Waves, Turbidities)., John William Snedden Jan 1985

Origin And Sedimentary Characteristics Of Discrete Sand Beds In Modern Sediments Of The Central Texas Continental Shelf (Storm, Hurricane, Geostrophic, Waves, Turbidities)., John William Snedden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thin (1-9 cm) discrete beds of sand and silt are present in the clayey modern sediments of the Texas shelf. Observation of seaward size-grading within the beds indicates that the source of the clastics is the adjacent coastal zone. Consideration of the nature of wave and current processes during storms and the dimensions of possible coastal sub-environment sources suggests that the shoreface supplied the sand found in the discrete sand beds. The seaward grading and along-shelf continuity of a correlative horizon dated as having been deposited during the passage of Hurricane Carla in 1961 imply that transport was along-shelf but …

Characterization Of The Modified Phagocytic Vacuole Occupied By Intracellular Toxoplasma Gondii (Macrophage, Protozoa)., L. David Sibley Jan 1985

Characterization Of The Modified Phagocytic Vacuole Occupied By Intracellular Toxoplasma Gondii (Macrophage, Protozoa)., L. David Sibley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite which resides in modified endocytic compartments of host cells. Extensive intracellular replication and host cell lysis leads to acute toxoplasmosis which is eventually limited by the host immune response to a chronic state of infection. The features of this unique intracellular compartment, which enables Toxoplasma to survive in macrophages, are reported here. Although Toxoplasma survives in normal macrophages, activated macrophages from immune animals rapidly killed Toxoplasma by production of oxygen radicals and intermediates generated during parasite invasion. In addition, activated macrophages inhibited Toxoplasma growth by an oxygen-independent mechanism. Qualitative and quantitative features of oxygen …

Production And Nitrogen Dynamics Of A Vallisneria Americana Grass Bed In Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana (Nitrogen Cycle, Modeling, Seagrasses, Decomposition Phenology, Vallisneria-Celery Grass-Eelgrass, Environmental Factors)., Diana Lee Steller Jan 1985

Production And Nitrogen Dynamics Of A Vallisneria Americana Grass Bed In Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana (Nitrogen Cycle, Modeling, Seagrasses, Decomposition Phenology, Vallisneria-Celery Grass-Eelgrass, Environmental Factors)., Diana Lee Steller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Vallisneria americana grass beds of Lake Pontchartrain contribute approximately 200 g dry weight/m('2)/yr primary production, a continuous release of detrital material, and rapid nutrient recycling. A harvest method was used to estimate production. The addition of litterfall to harvest production raised annual production estimates by up to 28%. When litterfall was corrected for decomposition, the production estimates were raised by up to 85% over harvest estimates alone. Litterfall and decomposition increased toward shore and occurred throughout the year providing a continuous supply of energy and nutrients. Grass bed production varied along the coastline and was greatest at mid-depths. Values of …

Detecting Malingering With The Mmpi And The Pst., Christine M. Turin Jan 1985

Detecting Malingering With The Mmpi And The Pst., Christine M. Turin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to refine methods of detecting malingering of psychosis by forensic patients. The most effective measures of malingering to date were the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) F and F-K Indices. The literature, based on simulation research, was deficient in confirmatory work with true forensic malingerers. Further, the Projective Simulation Test (PST) had shown promise with simulators, but had not been used with malingerers. In this study, 50 prisoners volunteered from Hunt Correctional Institute, St. Gabriel, Louisiana, and were randomly assigned within reading groups to serve in Standard Instruction and Simulator groups, and 50 volunteers …

Aqueous Phase Oxidation Of Organics (Wet-Air, Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Synergism, Free Radical, Xylene, Phenol)., Richard Scott Willms Jan 1985

Aqueous Phase Oxidation Of Organics (Wet-Air, Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Synergism, Free Radical, Xylene, Phenol)., Richard Scott Willms

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fundamental disappearance kinetics parameters have been obtained for four compounds individually subjected to aqueous phase oxidation. These four compounds are m-xylene, phenol, tetrachloroethylene, and malathion. Concentration histories were obtained using a one liter "sampled-batch" reactor. Reaction conditions ranged from 114-290 (DEGREES)C and 1000-2500 psi air. A kinetics model incorporating vapor-liquid equilibrium effects was developed and used to determine reaction rate constants. The reactions were found to be first order in organic and 1/2 order in oxygen. Induction periods were observed for m-xylene and phenol. The durations of these periods were found to be inversely proportional to oxygen concentration. Activation energies …

Perceptions Of Nine Change Agent Roles And Related Work Variables By County Extension Agents In The Minnesota Agricultural Extension Service--1985., Jared Melville Smalley Jan 1985

Perceptions Of Nine Change Agent Roles And Related Work Variables By County Extension Agents In The Minnesota Agricultural Extension Service--1985., Jared Melville Smalley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The major focus of this dissertation study was on the self-expectations of Minnesota County Extension Agents as they carry out nine change agent roles in their educational work. Impetus for the study came from a 1984 report that indicated 70.5 percent of these agents felt emotional strain due to "expect too much of self.". Data was collected regarding the nine roles and six work-related variables by mail questionnaire. A total of 230 usable responses were received from the 248 agents on active duty during May, 1985. The major findings of the study were generalized as follows: (1) The most positive …

The study's purpose was to examine variation in pupil control ideology (PCI) and existence of pluralistic ignorance in a school for the deaf. Participant observation, survey administration, and ethnographic interview techniques were related to nine hypotheses focused upon informal group structures of hearing and non-hearing teachers within the school culture. The hypotheses were: (1) Hearing teachers will perceive PCI of non-hearing teachers as more custodial than non-hearing teachers report. (2) Non-hearing teachers will perceive PCI of hearing teachers as more custodial than hearing teachers report. (3) Hearing teachers will perceive hearing teachers' PCI as less custodial than non-hearing teachers' PCI. …

Nominal Contracting Effects On Common Stock Returns: A Multi-Factor Model Approach (Unexpected Inflation)., Edward Elias Zakkak Jan 1985

Nominal Contracting Effects On Common Stock Returns: A Multi-Factor Model Approach (Unexpected Inflation)., Edward Elias Zakkak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the theoretical and empirical impact of nominal contracting effects on common stock real returns. It develops an arbitrage pricing model which has as its primary factors the market portfolio and expected inflation and unexpected inflation rates. It extends the model to test empirically for the impact of different nominal contracting effects. In particular, it examines the short- and long-term net monetary position effects, the depreciation tax effect, the inventory tax effect and the wage contract effect. A common feature among these effects is that they are nominal contracts whose real values are affected by unexpected inflation. The …

Determinants Of Bid Premiums In Mergers: Information Or Wealth Transfer Effects?, Fayez Arafat Elayan Jan 1985

Determinants Of Bid Premiums In Mergers: Information Or Wealth Transfer Effects?, Fayez Arafat Elayan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although empirical evidence consistently finds large premiums paid to target firms in acquisitions, the evidence concerning the acquiring firm is mixed. Some studies show that acquiring stockholders earn a significantly positive excess return, others find that the returns are negative, and still others conclude that acquiring stockholders earn normal returns like any other investment. There is limited evidence concerning the impact of mergers on bondholders of the participating firms. Asquith and Kim (1982) indicate that bondholders of the merging firms neither gain nor lose from mergers, while Settle et al. (1984) finds evidence that bondholders gain from mergers. Thus, while …

On K(,2) Of Rings Of Integers Of Totally Real Number Fields (Birch-Tate, Steinberg, Class Number, Symbol, Zeta-Function)., Karl Friedrich Hettling Jan 1985

On K(,2) Of Rings Of Integers Of Totally Real Number Fields (Birch-Tate, Steinberg, Class Number, Symbol, Zeta-Function)., Karl Friedrich Hettling

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We study the finite abelian groups K(,2)(o), where o denotes the ring of integers of a totally real number field. As a major tool we employ the Birch-Tate conjecture which states that the order of K(,2)(o) can be computed via the Dedekind zeta-function. The odd part of this conjecture has been proved for abelian fields as a consequence of the Mazur-Wiles work on the "Main conjecture". After the preliminaries of chapter 1, we proceed in chapter 2 by deriving a formula for (zeta)(,F)(-1), where F denotes a totally real abelian number field. Using this formula we prove the congruence L …

Adsorption And Movement Of Rhizobium Japonicum In Soils., Hong Yang Jan 1985

Adsorption And Movement Of Rhizobium Japonicum In Soils., Hong Yang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Adsorption and movement of R. japonicum strain 110 in soils was studied under laboratory conditions. Vertical movement of rhizobia as affected by precolating water was examined in sand and silt loam soils. Rhizobia did not move vertically when the soils were already at field capacity; however, percolating water enhanced the movement. Soil texture and clay concentration affected the movement of rhizobia. They moved readily in a sand but the migration decreased with increasing depth in a silt loam. Rhizobial movement decreased as clay content increased. The bacteria remained in the first 4 cm when 12% clay was used. In the …

Social Skills Assessment For Mainstreamed Handicapped Students: The Discriminative Efficiency Of The Teacher Ratings Of Social Skills (Tross)., Frederick Lee Black Jan 1985

Social Skills Assessment For Mainstreamed Handicapped Students: The Discriminative Efficiency Of The Teacher Ratings Of Social Skills (Tross)., Frederick Lee Black

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Until recently no time-efficient teacher rating scale of social skills has been available. With the development of the Teacher Ratings of Social Skills (TROSS; Gresham & Elliott, 1984) this gap has possibly been filled. Preliminary research on the scale has shown it to possess adequate reliability and validity (Clark, Gresham, & Elliott, 1985). Little is known yet, however, regarding the possible utility of the scale in discriminating among school-aged children of differing handicapping conditions. The present study examined the discriminative efficiency of the TROSS with a sample of 250 school-age children from four different groups: (a) Behavior Disordered, (b) Learning …

Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of A Gene For Aryletherase From A Ligninolytic Erwinia Sp. (Lignin, Biodegradation, Bacterial)., Kenneth Edwin Narva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recombinant DNA techniques were utilized to clone a gene from the ligninolytic system of a saprophytic Erwinia sp. into Escherichia coli using pBR322 as a vector. The cloned gene encodes aryletherase activity and was selected from amp('r) tet('S) transformants of E. coli Cs412 using salicin as the selective carbon source. This compound has structural characteristics similar to some lignin model compounds. The cloned gene enclodes activity which oxidizes aromatic lignin model compounds resulting ultimately in the breakage of arylether bonds while leaving the aromatic nucleus intact. At least one lower molecular weight aromatic compound is also released from kraft lignin …

Control, Dynamics, And Kinetics Of Gas Exchange At The Onset And Offset Of Treadmill Exercise In The Pony (Oxygen Deficit, Debt, Ventilatory, Isocapric Hyperprea, Blood)., Scotty Kline Powers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of experiment one was to develop and validate an open circuit technique (OCT) employing a mixing-chamber for measurement of gas exchange during non-steady-state exercise in humans and ponies. Serial measurements of oxygen uptake ((')VO(,2)) using human subjects and ponies were made during rest to exercise transitions using the OCT incorporating a time delay to match mixed expired gas concentrations with the appropriate ventilatory volume. Oxygen uptake calculated by the OCT did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) from (')VO(,2) obtained by Douglas bag procedures. These data demonstrate that an OCT analysis system is a sensitive means of (')VO(,2) measurement …
