The Response Of Saccharum Species To Growth Regulators Used As Tillering Agents (Sugarcane)., Keith P. Bischoff
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to identify those plant growth regulators that cause the greatest increase in shoot number of basic genotypes of the genus Saccharum and at the same time identify those genotypes that exhibit a high degree of response to certain growth regulators which have been proposed as tillering agents. A series of three factorial experiments was conducted under controlled conditions in the greenhouse utilizing fourteen cultivars representing the spectrum of the genus Saccharum along with five synthetic growth regulators proposed as tillering agents. Treatments were applied to the plants one month after germination. Shoot number and shoot height …
Amine Removal From Aqueous Process Streams By Ligand Exchange., Wayne Bernard Bolden
Amine Removal From Aqueous Process Streams By Ligand Exchange., Wayne Bernard Bolden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Amines in aqueous, process feed or effluent streams can cause contamination problems. Ligand exchange demonstrates the potential to remove amines from these process streams. In ligand exchange, a complexing solute is removed from solution as it covalently bonds to a metal ion held on cation exchange resin. Previous work has shown copper(II)-carboxylic acid resin to be a suitable metal-resin exchange sorbent. The results of a research program are presented showing the applicability of ligand exchange to an amine removal operation. This study includes experimental determination of equilibrium relationships and diffusion coefficients. These parameters have been used to mathematically model ligand …
The Topological Information Retrieval System And The Topological Paradigm: A Unification Of The Major Models Of Information Retrieval., Steven C. Cater
The Topological Information Retrieval System And The Topological Paradigm: A Unification Of The Major Models Of Information Retrieval., Steven C. Cater
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There are three topics discussed in this work. The first topic is an investigation of the topological properties of the p-norm model of Salton, Fox, and Wu. It is shown that certain properties of the p-norm model that one would expect to hold, given the topological origin of the model, do not in fact hold. These properties include the ability to change the query by changing p, and the ability to adequately separate documents. Since these properties do hold in the model as actually constructed, it must be that the properties do not follow from the topological origin of the …

Neogene Foraminifera Of The Limon Basin Of Costa Rica., David Terrance Cassell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The distribution of foraminifera in the Uscari, Rio Banano, Moin Formations of the Limon Basin, Costa Rica, is the subject of this study. Heterostegina antillea and Lepidocyclina (L.) waylandvaughani place the basal Uscari Formation of Quebrada Terciopelo in Zone N3 of the latest Oligocene. The overlap of Orbulina universa and Globorotalia fohsi peripheroronda places the type section Uscari Formation in the early Middle Miocene (zones N9 to N10). The overlapping ranges of planktonic foraminifera and the ostracods Radimella ovata in the sandstones places that unit in Zone N18 of Early Pliocene. Globorotalia truncatulinoides excelsa indicates a Pleistocene age for the …
Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of "Aryletherase" From A Ligninolytic Erwinia Sp.: Enhancement Of Gene Expression., Jeffrey William Cary
Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of "Aryletherase" From A Ligninolytic Erwinia Sp.: Enhancement Of Gene Expression., Jeffrey William Cary
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recombinant DNA techniques were used to enhance the expression of a gene encoding "aryletherase" activity. This gene, apparently lacking regulatory elements, was present on a 792bp BamHI DNA fragment of Erwinia sp. genomic DNA, that was cloned into Escherichia coli using the plasmid vector pBR322. To obtain a larger fragment of Erwinia genomic DNA carrying the "aryletherase" gene and its regulatory regions, an Erwinia sp. genomic DNA library was constructed in the lambda phage EMBL3. Screening the library with nick translated 792bp BamHI fragment identified several recombinant phage which demonstrated homology with the probe. Restriction digestion of DNA from one …
Development Of Automatic And Effortful Processes In Memory Of Movement Location., Aharon Dayan
Development Of Automatic And Effortful Processes In Memory Of Movement Location., Aharon Dayan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two experiments designed to assess whether location information about movement is automatically encoded in memory were conducted. In Experiment 1, two automaticity criteria were examined. The first stipulated that age differences are not exhibited in processing location information; and, the second stipulated that location information is encoded without intention and additional intention does not improve the quality of the encoding process. A third criteria was also examined: whether spatial cues from the environment (layout of testing area) improves the encoding of movement information. In Experiment 2, the automaticity criteria that practice has no effect was analyzed. In Experiment 1, 60 …
Acceptability Of Social Skills Training Methods (Sociometrics)., Lillee Coleman Clark
Acceptability Of Social Skills Training Methods (Sociometrics)., Lillee Coleman Clark
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the acceptability of social skills treatment methods as rated by elementary school teachers. Independent variables such as target problem (aggressive versus withdrawn social skills deficits), treatment method (modeling-coaching versus overcorrection), and outcome information (weak versus strong therapeutic effects) were systematically manipulated to determine which treatment method teachers preferred to remediate social skills deficits in their classrooms. Also of interest was the effect of outcome information on teachers' ratings of acceptability. Two measured independent variables included were the Knowledge Assessment and the Intervention Use Assessment to determine teachers' knowledge of treatments presented and how frequently treatments had been …
Characterization Of Messenger Ribonucleoprotein Particles In Dormant Sporangiospores Of The Fungus Mucor Racemosus (Messenger-Rna)., Charles Patrick Chapman
Characterization Of Messenger Ribonucleoprotein Particles In Dormant Sporangiospores Of The Fungus Mucor Racemosus (Messenger-Rna)., Charles Patrick Chapman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Extracts of sporangiospores of Mucor racemosus contained RNA that readily hybridized with ('3)H polyuridylic acid. Prior to germination, this RNA was in a form sedimenting at <80S. Within 10 minutes after initiating germination, most of this RNA sedimented with polyribosomes and 80S monoribosomes. Particulate material from spore extracts bound to oligo dT -cellulose at high ionic strength and was assumed to contain messenger ribonucleoprotein particles (mRNP's). A portion of the mRNP's was released from the column by lowering the ionic strength. Other portions were eluted stepwise in buffer containing 50% and 90% formamide and in 0.1-N NaOH. Identical elution patterns were observed whether monitoring incorporated ('31)P-orthophosphate or L- ('32)S methionine, absorbance at 280 nm, or hybridization of ('3)H polyuridylic acid. mRNP's from the first two fractions were analyzed. A bimodal population of particles was detected in sedimentation velocity and sedimentation equilibrium centrifugation. Particles eluted at low ionic strength demonstrated a sedimentation coefficient distribution of 20S-to-80S, with a mean of 55S. Particles eluted in formamide demonstrated a sedimentation coefficient distribution of 20S-to-60S, with a mean of 40S. Particles eluted at low ionic strength displayed two peaks in CsCl centrifugation, with bouyant densities of 1.37 gm/cc and 1.59 gm/cc. Particles eluted in formamide displayed a single peak with a buoyant density of 1.61 gm/cc. Particles eluted at low ionic strength and centrifuged in metrizamide solution formed two bands having bouyant densities of 1.15 gm/cc and 1.30 gm/cc; formamide-eluted particles banded only at the higher density. Mucor 40S ribosomal subunits banded at 1.56 gm/cc and 1.28 gm/cc in CsCl and metrizamide solution respectively. Analysis of mRNP fractions by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis characterized protein components of these particles which helped explain their biomodal sedimentation behaviour. Each mRNP fraction contained a unique spectrum of proteins not shared by ribosomes or soluble cell proteins. The formamide-eluted particles contained two proteins, whereas the particles eluted at low ionic strength possessed 12 proteins. A 24,000-dalton protein was the predominant form in both. The denser mRNP's were smaller and lacked proteins found in the larger less dense particles. The former had a protein/RNA ratio of 45/55; whereas the later possessed a value of 90/10. Messenger RNA extracted from the mRNP's sedimented between 8S-to-20S.

The Effects Of Alcohols And Crude Oil Composition On The Performance And Mechanisms Of Alkaline Flooding Of Oil Reservoirs., Mohamed Amine Dahmani
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Alkaline flooding for enhanced oil recovery was investigated and methods were developed to increase the efficiency and predictability of the process. The problems associated with current alkaline flooding technology were addressed in three ways. The effect of alcohol additives on alkaline flooding was studied since alcohols have benefited related surfactant procedures. Crude oil composition was correlated with flood behavior to provide better predictions of alkaline flood performance. Finally, alkaline flood recovery efficiencies of oxidized crudes were measured to determine the benefits of in-situ air oxidation. The alkaline flooding process was studied through the use of interfacial tension measurements, microscopic examination …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Sedimentary Petrology Of The Early Archean Coongan Formation, Warrawoona Group, Eastern Pilbara Block, Western Australia (Sandstones, Precambrian)., Michael J. Dimarco
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Coongan Formation, defined and described here, is an approximately 3.5 Ga-old unit of felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, representing a major episode of early Archean felsic volcanism, in the predominantly basaltic Warrawoona Group, eastern Pilbara Block, Western Australia. The Coongan Formation is divided into three members: the Duffer and Panorama Members and the Strelley Pool Chert. The oldest and volumetrically greatest part of the Coongan Formation is the Duffer Member, which consists largely of volcaniclastic breccia, conglomerate, tuff, and felsic lava. Vertical sequences, up to 5 km thick, indicate that the Duffer Member represents coarse-grained, shoaling-upward debris-aprons that flanked …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Job Performance, Teacher Job Satisfaction, Principal Influence And School Outcomes., John Aaron Jackson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the relationship between principals' instructional leadership behavior and school effectiveness. In the conceptual model tested, certain school context variables, teachers' job satisfaction and teachers' willingness to accept principals' influence in the instructional realm, were viewed as mediating the relationship between principals' behavior and school outcomes. From this perspective, principals' instructional leadership behavior was seen as being indirectly related to school outcomes by its impact on these mediating variables. For the purposes of this study, teachers' job satisfaction, teachers, willingness to accept principals' professional advice and teachers' perceptions of principals' effectiveness as instructional leaders served as independent variables. …
Suicide In Henry James's Fiction., Mary John Joseph
Suicide In Henry James's Fiction., Mary John Joseph
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A writer who emphasizes the workings of the minds of his characters by working "an acre of embroidery on an inch of canvas," James calls attention to the portrayal of self-willed deaths in his fiction. Writing in the period following the glorification of the suicidal deaths of Werther and Chatterton, James creates several suicidal characters. Having grown up in a highly individualistic family that emphasized the exercise of free will, and being one who revels in the probing of his characters' consciousnesses, James considered important the role of will in matters of life and death. The ruinous effects of displacement …

Mud Deposition At The Shoreface: Wave And Sediment Dynamics On The Chenier Plain Of Louisiana., George Paul Kemp
Mud Deposition At The Shoreface: Wave And Sediment Dynamics On The Chenier Plain Of Louisiana., George Paul Kemp
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sedimentological data, and high-resolution current velocity time-series were acquired nearshore along the muddy coast of Louisiana's chenier plain. Results suggest that the 2 to 10 cm thick, laminated and graded silt/shell + mud beds which characterize shoreface mudflat sedimentation form through intermittent dumping of fluid mud suspensions. Cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are first separated and concentrated by shear within a wave boundary layer (WBL). Rapid sedimentation, or "freezing", of the mud fraction occurs when the yield strength of the fluid mud suspension equals that of the WBL shear stress. Incident waves were well described by shallow water linear wave theory, …

The purpose of this study was to analyze the rhetoric of Lee A. Iacocca as expressed in the thoughts and actions of the man; to explore rhetorical aspects of his popular myth-hero qualities; and to examine the rhetorical strategies Iacocca used in presenting his message. Criteria for the study were based on the rhetorical theories of Ernest Bormann, Lloyd Bitzer, and Kenneth Burke, with an emphasis on two of Aristotle's canons. In addition, the pattern for the myth-hero as presented by Joseph Campbell was a guide. These concepts blended into an interrelationship which helped illuminate the dimensions of Iacocca's rhetorical …
The Algebraic Image Of The Asymmetric Top., Yorck Leschber
The Algebraic Image Of The Asymmetric Top., Yorck Leschber
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The algebraic realization of the quantum mechanical rotor by the SU(3) (--->) SO(3) algebra is investigated. It is shown that a hamiltonian built from rotationally invariant functions of SU(3) generators reproduces the eigenvalues of the rotor hamiltonian. The equivalence of both models is established also for the quadrupole transition rates and the D(,2) symmetry of the rotor. The relation between the SU(3) (--->) SO(3) algebra and the nuclear shell model allows therefore a microscopic interpretation of rotational motion as a many-particle effect.
Populations, Selection Mechanisms, And Performance: A Study Of Banks In The State Of Louisiana., Merle John Peper
Populations, Selection Mechanisms, And Performance: A Study Of Banks In The State Of Louisiana., Merle John Peper
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many theoretical paradigms have been created in an effort to successfully measure organizational performance. One of the more recent approaches, known as the "population perspective," focuses on populations of organizations as its unit of analysis, and attempts to explain the relationships among organizations, populations, and environments. These relationships are explored by (a) grouping organizations into homogeneous clusters or populations, and (b) assessing alternative selection mechanisms or predictors of organizational prosperity. The studying of populations help define the organizational forms allowing survival within an environment, while increasing the generalizability of the study's findings. Studying selection mechanisms within their populations allows the …

Olfactometric In Situ Soil Exploration: Development Of The Electro-Odo-Cone., Mohammad Mohammadi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The suitability of the electro-odo-cell (EOC) for detection of organic chemical contaminants in ambient air and soil strata was investigated under laboratory conditions. The existing concept of the EOC was modified to incorporate the system into a state of the art subsurface soil investigation probe (electric cone penetrometer). Partial theoretical support for EOC operation was developed. The state of the art in reactive solute transport in soils was reviewed. From this review inferences were made about time of travel of a permeant in soil samples, which was consequently compared with time of initial response of the laboratory prototype cone penetrometer …

An Exploration Of The Type A Behavior Pattern In Chronic Headache Sufferers., Neil Bruce Rappaport
An Exploration Of The Type A Behavior Pattern In Chronic Headache Sufferers., Neil Bruce Rappaport
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, investigations have examined the possible link between the Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP) and chronic headache. Several studies have indicated a significant relation between Type A, as measured by the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS), and headache frequency. As well, several researchers have noted the similarities in the descriptions of the Type A individual and those characteristics of the "migraine personality." To date, no prospective study has examined whether that set of characteristics ascribed to migraineurs is in fact the TABP. The second focus of this investigation was to provide a comprehensive description of the psychological functioning of Type A …

Glyphosate Catabolism By Pseudomonas Sp. Pg2982., Dean Lee Shinabarger
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The pathway for the degradation of glyphosate (N-phosphonomethylglycine) by Pseudomonas sp. PG2982 has been determined using metabolic radiolabeling experiments. Radiorespirometry experiments utilizing 3-('14)C glyphosate revealed that approximately 50-59% of the C3 carbon was oxidized to CO(,2). Fractionation of stationary phase cells labeled with 3-('14)C glyphosate revealed that from 45-47% of the assimilated C3 carbon is distributed to proteins and that the amino acids methionine and serine are highly labeled. The nucleic acid bases adenine and guanine received 90% of the C3 label that was incorporated into nucleic acids, and the only pyrimidine base labeled was thymine. These results indicated that …
