Sands and minor gravels are concentrated in middle and lower fan channel fills, and in lower fan channel-mouth deposits. Silts and clays occur in overbank deposits, passive channel fills, and interbeds associated with coarser facies. Graded bedding and lamination, both of varying thickness, are the dominant sedimentary structures in all environments. At this stage in their depositional history, the sands are relatively clean, have high porosities, show only minor pore-reducing diagenetic effects, and thus have excellent hydrocarbon reservoir potential. -from Authors

Surface Effects On The Diamagnetic Susceptibility And Other Properties Of A Low-Temperature Electron Gas, Lipo Wang, R. F. Oconnell Jan 1986

Surface Effects On The Diamagnetic Susceptibility And Other Properties Of A Low-Temperature Electron Gas, Lipo Wang, R. F. Oconnell

Faculty Publications

A general formulation is developed for determining the free energy of a Fermi gas contained in an arbitrary smooth external potential barrier and in a weak magnetic field, in the low-temperature limit. The Wigner phase-space formalism of quantum mechanics is used as a calculational tool. Explicit formulas are given, which enable one to compute surface and temperature effects on various physical properties (susceptibility, specific heat, etc.) of the system. Some simple examples are constructed for the diamagnetic-susceptibility calculation, which show that the corrections depend on the form of the surface potential barrier and the size of the material, but, in …

Validity Of Constant-Stress And Elastic-Instability Principles Of Stem Formation In Pinus Contorta And Trifolium Pratense, T. J. Dean, J. N. Long Jan 1986

Validity Of Constant-Stress And Elastic-Instability Principles Of Stem Formation In Pinus Contorta And Trifolium Pratense, T. J. Dean, J. N. Long

Faculty Publications

Independent studies have shown that both the constant-stress and the elastic instability models describe the form of a plant's central stem. Teleologically, the constant stress model states that a stem tapers to equalize stress produced by wind pressure along the stem. The elastic instability model states that stems and branches taper to maintain similar elasticity throughout the tree and that total tree height is limited to about one-quarter of the height at which the stem would buckle under its own weight. We investigated the ability of these two models to describe the central stems of both mature and sapling Pinus …

Reduction In The Incidence Of Rejection Of Heterotopic Murine Corneal Transplants By Pretreatment With Ultraviolet Radiation, Larry Ray-Keil, John W. Chandler

Faculty Publications

A reduction in the incidence of rejection of mouse heterotopic corneal allografts was achieved by in vitro pretreatment of the graft with ultraviolet light. By day 21, 68% of untreated BALB/c corneas trans-planted into s.c. abdominal pouches of C57BL/6 recipi-ents demostrated rejection In contrast, corneas pre-treated with UV-A, -B, or -C at 150 mJ/cm2 showed an incidence of rejection at day 21 of 30%, 33% and 18%, respectively. Experiments indicate a significant reduction in rejection with doses of UV-B radiation above 75 mJ/cm. 2 The mechanism of this reduction is unknown, but may be due to a depletion or alteration …

Heifer, bull, fetal calf sera, and colostral whey were used to evaluate the influence of protein concentrations on percent progressive motility, head-to-head agglutination, acrosomal integrity, and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence of bovine spermatozoa using ejaculates from 10 bulls. In the first experiment, 10% (vol/vol) addition of undiluted colostral whey resulted in the highest head-to-head agglutination, acrosomal integrity, and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence. Ten percent (vol/vol) addition of whey diluted to a protein concentration equivalent to fetal calf serum produced significantly lower agglutination, acrosomal integrity, and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence. Fetal calf serum was unable to produce agglutination and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence of bovine …

An Evaluation Of The Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, 1983-86., Bobby Hugh Fletcher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary objective of this study was to determine the extent to which dietary behavior changes were made by the EFNEP participants in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, and whether or not they were retained after they were graduated for six months but less than one year. Data were obtained by personal interviews conducted by paraprofessional nutrition aides on the 208 homemakers who participated in the EFNEP during 1983-86. The 24-hour dietary recall instrument was the basis upon which homemakers' diets were evaluated. The dependent variable in this study was the mean difference in dietary scores at three different points in time …

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar Jan 1986

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Various scholars have referred to the metaphorical journey in Hawthorne's work. This is the first comprehensive study of the journey image in Hawthorne's fiction. Inquiring into the relationship between the imagery in Hawthorne's short stories and his longer fiction, the study examines the sources of Hawthorne's fascination with the journey motif. Hawthorne uses the journey in his first published work, Fanshawe. Both contrived and derivative of his reading of travel literature and fiction, especially The Pilgrim's Progress, Fanshawe exhibits all facets of the journey-related imagery that Hawthorne employs in his later fiction. Hawthorne wrote his short stories after he wrote …

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist Jan 1986

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The type of church building being erected today is quite different from the traditional white steepled church on the village green. Church buildings and their location in the community have gradually changed as American religion has become more complex. the changes in religion reflect the dramatic transformation of American society from a rural to an urban culture. This process began after the Civil War, but it was not widely acknowledged until the last decades of the nineteenth century. The transformation was not limited to the large urban centers, but can be seen in towns and villages across the nation. Various …

Dyadic Ramification In Quartic Algebraic Number Fields., Stella Roberson Ashford Jan 1986

Dyadic Ramification In Quartic Algebraic Number Fields., Stella Roberson Ashford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is concerned with dyadic ramification in quartic number fields E. If f(x) is a defining polynomial for E, then E (TURNEQ) IQ x /(f(x)). The problem is to decide whether or not 2 ramifies in E, in terms of the coefficients of f(x). In this dissertation, this problem is. studied when f(x) is an irreducible quartic trinomial. That is, f has one of the forms (UNFORMATTED TABLE FOLLOWS). (1) f(x) = x('4) + cx + d. (2) f(x) = x('4) + cx('2) + d c,d in ZZ. (TABLE ENDS). (any irreducible trinomial can be reduced to one of …

The Relationship Between Interaction Time And Reading And Math Achievement For Chapter I Students Using Computer-Assisted Instruction In Grades Three, Four And Five., Betty Josephine Conaway Archambeault

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The role of computer technology, particularly computer-assisted instruction, in the educational delivery system has steadily increased over the last decade. Although the largest number of CAI programs can be categorized as drill and practice, an increasing number of high quality simulation and tutorial programs are becoming available. The interactive nature of CAI is supported by the learning theories of Piaget, Gagne, and other learning theorists. Research on the topic indicates that CAI has a generally positive effect on student achievement and fosters positive attitudes among students and instructors toward the learning environment. This research study had two goals. The first …

Estimation Of Nonlinear Frontier Functions And Efficiency Measurements For Airframe Production Programs., Banani Dhar Jan 1986

Estimation Of Nonlinear Frontier Functions And Efficiency Measurements For Airframe Production Programs., Banani Dhar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research examines measures of economic efficiency in aircraft production. In particular, a type of nonlinear frontier estimation is contrasted with more traditional methods for estimating a dynamic cost function. This cost function is grounded in economic theory, and it is consistent with our knowledge of the aircraft production process. The model includes the effects of both learning and production rate on total program costs. Our model differs from more traditional cost specifications in that we make no attempt to measure production rate. Our model links direct labor requirements to fixed delivery schedules, under the assumption that the firm attempts …

A Comparative Analysis Of Multidimensional Diffusion Models: The Diffusion Of The Prohibition Movement In The United States Of America, 1876-1919., Robert Paul Sechrist Jan 1986

A Comparative Analysis Of Multidimensional Diffusion Models: The Diffusion Of The Prohibition Movement In The United States Of America, 1876-1919., Robert Paul Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographical study of the spatial spread of innovations has revealed much about the spatial components of innovation diffusion, but innovations diffuse in other dimensions as well. This study compares the ability of the classic spatial diffusion model with diffusion modeled in constructed social-economic dimensions. Each model is compared with its counterpart in its ability to simulate and explain the growth of the prohibition movement during the period 1876 to 1920. The various models indicate that prohibition spread in several dimensions simultaneously. The spatial diffusion model demonstrates that the innovation spread first to the West and then back North from a …

Characterization Of The Protein And Glycoprotein Components From Antigenically Distinct Strains Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus., Olivia Salinovich Jan 1986

Characterization Of The Protein And Glycoprotein Components From Antigenically Distinct Strains Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus., Olivia Salinovich

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four isolates of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) recovered weeks apart from a single experimentally infected Shetland pony (Orrego, 1983) were examined in both antigenic and structural analyses to investigate variation occurring during persistent infection. These four isolates were shown to be antigenically distinct in both serum neutralization assays and in immunoblot analysis with either a polyclonal equine reference antiserum or a panel of virus-specific monoclonal antibodies. Two-dimensional mapping of tryptic peptides of viral components from these isolates revealed that both gp90 and gp45 undergo structural variation during virus replication in a single animal, but that no such structural variation …

Whole cottonseed, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and soybean meal and whole cottonseed heated for 4 hours at 127, 138, and 149(DEGREES)C were also evaluated for comparison. Solubility was determined by three methods: hot water-refluxed 1 hour; cold water-mixed 30 minutes; and cold water-homogenized 5 seconds. Ammonia production was measured after 2, 4, and 6 hour incubations. Disappearance of crude protein and dry …

Development Of A New Conductivity Model For Shaly Sand Interpretation., Pedro L. Silva Jan 1986

Development Of A New Conductivity Model For Shaly Sand Interpretation., Pedro L. Silva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, a new theoretical conductivity model for shaly sands is developed. The model is based on dual water concepts. In addition, the equivalent counterion conductivity changes as the diffuse electrical double layer expands and is then a function of temperature, shaliness, and of the conductivity of the far water. The formation resistivity factor used in the model is independent of shaliness. A method to calculate the equivalent counterion conductivity is proposed. This method is based on treating the double layer region as a hypothetical electrolyte, the properties of which are derived from basic electrochemistry theory. The new model …

The Effects Of Heartworm Infection And Beta Blockade On Submaximal, Graded Exercise In Dogs., Patricia Louise Hopkins Price

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four dogs with canine heartworm disease (CHD) and four control dogs were tested during a 21 minute submaximal, incremental, graded treadmill test, under normal conditions and after 2 mg/kg propranolol, i.v. Arterial and venous blood gas and pH, heart rate, systemic blood pressure, hematocrit, rectal temperature, lactate, glucose, and electrolytes were measured. CHD dogs had lower sodium and P(,a)O(,2) levels. All dogs displayed progressive increments in heart rate, hematocrit, and potassium and small gains in rectal temperature during exercise. Mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and arterial pH increased and remained elevated throughout exercise. P(,v)O(,2) and P(,a)CO(,2) decreased, but P(,a)O(,2) did …

Effects Of Photoperiods At Nonoptimal Planting Dates On Branch Development And Yield Of Soybeans Glycine Max (L.) Merr., John Robert Settimi Jan 1986

Effects Of Photoperiods At Nonoptimal Planting Dates On Branch Development And Yield Of Soybeans Glycine Max (L.) Merr., John Robert Settimi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Planting soybeans between early May and early June provides the highest yield. Planting either before or after this optimal time can significantly reduce yields. Most of the yield from determinate soybeans comes from the branches. Branch development and yield are reduced at nonoptimal planting dates, while main axis yield is not. The relatively short photoperiods of nonoptimal planting dates appears to cause the reduction of both the vegetative and reproductive growth periods resulting in reduced development and yield. The objectives of this dissertation were to: Characterize the development of branches in relation to that of the main axis at different …

Molecular Studies Of T-Lymphocytes From Bovine Leukemia Virus-Infected Cattle., Diana Lynn Williams Jan 1986

Molecular Studies Of T-Lymphocytes From Bovine Leukemia Virus-Infected Cattle., Diana Lynn Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Highly specific monoclonal antibodies and microfluorimetry were used to determine the absolute number of B and T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infected cattle. The peripheral blood lymphocyte populations from BLV-infected cattle were elevated when compared to BLV-negative animals. The increase in the lymphocyte population in the aleukemic (AL) animals was due to an increase in T lymphocytes. In the PL animals the increase was due mainly to an increase of B lymphocytes but also to an increase of T lymphocytes. The PL animals showed a significantly higher number of surface immunoglobulin positive cells (sIg('+)) …

The Relation Among Stressful Life-Events, Affective Responses, And Headaches (Migraine, Muscle-Contraction)., Craig Douglas Waggoner Jan 1986

The Relation Among Stressful Life-Events, Affective Responses, And Headaches (Migraine, Muscle-Contraction)., Craig Douglas Waggoner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stress is frequently reported as a major contributing factor in both migraine and muscle-contraction headaches. The general conclusions of studies investigating the stress-headache relations are that headache sufferers experience a significant amount of stress in their lives, that stress can precipitate headache attacks, and that headache subjects tend to overreact to stress. The laboratory method and scales measuring major life-events have typically been used in studying stress but have several limitations, particularly for studying exacerbations and remissions of symptoms. Increasing the comprehensiveness of stress measurement, beyond the traditional life-events approach, by assessing stress and affective states on a daily basis …

Monkeys were sacrificed at 7 days, 2, 3, and 6 months post injection (PI). …

The Effects Of Structural Model Misspecification And Sample Size On The Robustness Of Lisrel Maximum Likelihood Parameter Estimates (Monte Carlo)., Beatrice Ott Baldwin Jan 1986

The Effects Of Structural Model Misspecification And Sample Size On The Robustness Of Lisrel Maximum Likelihood Parameter Estimates (Monte Carlo)., Beatrice Ott Baldwin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Researchers using the LISREL (linear structural relations) program developed by Joreskog and Sorbom (1984) for the purpose of estimating parameters of structural equation models must make important assumptions. The researcher must assume large sample size (asymptotic theory) and a multivariate normal distribution for the indicator variables. In addition, theoretical assumptions as to the appropriateness of the model specification must also be made. The Monte Carlo study examines the robustness of maximum likelihood parameter estimates under varying degrees of model misspecification. The effects of errors of omission, errors of inclusion, and simultaneous errors of omission and inclusion are studied for sample …

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Diverter System Performance., Frederick Eugene Beck Jan 1986

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Diverter System Performance., Frederick Eugene Beck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diverter systems, used as an alternate means of well control while drilling surface hole, have a demonstrated history of failure. Of particular interest in this dissertation are failures related to excessive backpressure, such as mechanical failure of surface equipment or the loss of the rig due to foundation collapse. Critical flow effects, neglected by current design practices, are shown both experimentally and theoretically to have a significant effect on backpressure. Critical flow is modeled by quantifying exit pressures and by including fluid acceleration pressure losses in backpressure calculations. "Systems analysis" of diverter operations is developed and applied to a field …

Computer-Aided Analysis Of Formation Pressure Integrity Tests Used In Oil Well Drilling., Mauricio Aguiar Almeida Jan 1986

Computer-Aided Analysis Of Formation Pressure Integrity Tests Used In Oil Well Drilling., Mauricio Aguiar Almeida

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Formation pressure-integrity tests or leak-off tests have been increasingly performed throughout the world. The test is performed primarily to verify how much pressure can be applied to the formation below the bottom of casing, and to test the cement job sheath around the outside of the casing. The initial design of the various casing strings to be cemented in the well depends heavily on the predicted fracture-pressure curve. If this predicted curve is not verified by the test, the casing plan will have to be changed. Thus, verifying formation fracture-pressure during drilling is of great importance. However, the lack of …

The Fricative Sound Source Spectrum Derived From A Vocal Tract Analog., Lawrence Edward Zagar Jan 1986

The Fricative Sound Source Spectrum Derived From A Vocal Tract Analog., Lawrence Edward Zagar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The applications of speech synthesis for computer voice response and speech analysis present the need for highly intelligible and natural synthesized speech. In order to improve the synthesis of fricative and related sounds, the use of simple models for the source spectrum of fricative sounds is investigated. The investigation is based on the use of a vocal tract analog and experimental measurements. Measurements of the sound pressure spectra of fricative consonants are made. Simple sound pressure measurements and measurements based on the technique for measuring intensity are utilized. The fricatives studied are /f/, /th/, /s/, /sh/, and /h/. Fricative sound …
