The Measurement Of Change In Performance Appraisal Rater Training., Mitzi Desselles Svoboda Jan 1986

The Measurement Of Change In Performance Appraisal Rater Training., Mitzi Desselles Svoboda

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The concepts of alpha, beta, and gamma change (Golembiewski, Billingsley, & Yeager, 1976) were used to assess the effects of rater error training (RET) and frame of reference training (FOR) on performance evaluations. Two studies were conducted using students as raters; Study 1 was a laboratory study in which raters evaluated managerial performance in the form of the Borman (1979) videotapes. Study 2 provided a field replication of the methodology with students rating actual instructor effectiveness. In both investigations RET and FOR were found to create significant concept redefinition (gamma change). In addition, the different procedures for assessing alpha, beta, …

Redox, Ph, And Ion Chemistry Of Acid Sulfate Rice Soils In Thailand., Sunchai Satawathananont Jan 1986

Redox, Ph, And Ion Chemistry Of Acid Sulfate Rice Soils In Thailand., Sunchai Satawathananont

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Five Thailand soils belonging to the Rangsit Very Acid (Rsa), Rangsit (Rs), Mahaphot (Ma), Bang Pakong (Bg), and Bangkok (Bk) series were employed in redox-pH-ion chemistry studies. Decreases in soil redox potential upon submergence were relatively slower and less intense in the acid sulfate soils than in the non-acid marine soil. Among the acid sulfate soils, the Rsa soil was most sluggish with respect to decreases in redox potential. Addition of organic matter or liming in combination with submergence accelerated decreases in redox potential in the flooded Rsa soil as well as in the other acid sulfate soils to the …

Use Of Tissue Culture Methods In Screening For Anthracnose (Colletotrichum Fragariae Brooks) Resistance In Strawberry., Violeta Nano Villegas Jan 1986

Use Of Tissue Culture Methods In Screening For Anthracnose (Colletotrichum Fragariae Brooks) Resistance In Strawberry., Violeta Nano Villegas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Calli derived from 'Tangi' (susceptible) and MSUS 42 and LA 8318 (resistant) exhibited differential responses when inoculated with Colletotrichum fragariae, isolate CF1. The best differential in terms of growth and multiplication of the fungus was observed at 15(DEGREES)C and this differential decreased with increasing incubation temperature and time. Level of benzyladenine in the medium did not affect disease expression. Susceptible tissues exhibited extreme sensitivity, characterized by intense discoloration and cessation of growth, when subcultured onto a medium containing the culture filtrate of C. fragariae while the resistant tissues were affected less. The efficacy of the culture filtrate was not affected …

Fear Of Crime And Women: An Analysis Of A Paradox (Louisiana)., Cheryl L. Thayer-Doyle Jan 1986

Fear Of Crime And Women: An Analysis Of A Paradox (Louisiana)., Cheryl L. Thayer-Doyle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Research indicates that sex is the most powerful predictor of fear of crime and that women have a higher level of fear than men. A paradox arises because women have a higher level of fear but are victimized less. This dissertation examines: (1) the underlying dimensions of fear and the specific offenses that evoke fear in men and women; (2) selected social and demographic characteristics and their relationship to a criterion variable; and (3) the effect the fear of rape contributes to the differences in the level of fear between men and women. The data was taken from a larger …

The Type A Behavior Pattern And Acth Response To The Stress Of Cardiac Catheterization., Marie Carmen Veitia Jan 1986

The Type A Behavior Pattern And Acth Response To The Stress Of Cardiac Catheterization., Marie Carmen Veitia

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is substantial evidence to indicate that the Type A Behavior Pattern is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. Recent research has shown that Type As, as compared to Type Bs, demonstrate enhanced biochemical and cardiovascular responses to stressful situations. These findings have led researchers to postulate that physiological reactivity may be one of the mechanisms through which Type A behavior confers coronary risk. The present study was designed to investigate physiological and psychological reactivity in Type A and Type B cardiac patients exposed to a cardiac catheterization. The effects of drugs (i.e., none versus beta-blockers and …

Non-Marine Atchafalaya Deltas: Processes And Products Of Interdistributary Basin Alluviation, South-Central Louisiana (Fluvial Deposits, Lacustrine)., Robert S. Tye Jan 1986

Non-Marine Atchafalaya Deltas: Processes And Products Of Interdistributary Basin Alluviation, South-Central Louisiana (Fluvial Deposits, Lacustrine)., Robert S. Tye

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Progradation of lacustrine deltas alluviated the interdistributary lowlands which occupy the transition zone between the alluvial valley and marine delta in the Atchafalaya Basin. Sediment introduced into the basin during the last 700 years by a major Mississippi River distributary has accumulated in the form of thin, regionally extensive deltas. Deltaic sedimentation is cyclic in nature. Rapid subsidence (basin downwarping and sediment compaction), in conjunction with lateral shifts in the site of deposition, creates vertically stacked deltaic wedges separated by backswamp deposits. One such delta prograded 6.5 km into Lake Fausse Pointe, grew to an area in excess of 29 …

Tolerance, Bioenergetics And Biochemical Composition Of The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus Rathbun, Exposed To The Water-Soluble Fraction Of South Louisiana Crude Oil., Shiao Yu Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The tolerance, bioenergetics, growth, molting frequency and biochemical composition of juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, exposed to the water-soluble fraction of South Louisiana crude oil were determined during a 21-d exposure period. Blue crabs were highly tolerant to petroleum hydrocarbons; the LC50 was 3927 ppb on day 21. Rates of energy intake decreased with increasing hydrocarbon concentration. Although energy expenditure rates of crabs exposed to 2504 ppb were not significantly higher than that of control crabs, they were significantly higher than those of crabs exposed to 820 and 1476 ppb. The resulting decrease in scope for growth was thus due …

A History And Analysis Of Selected National Urban League Discourse, 1910-1985., Dennis D. Cali Jan 1986

A History And Analysis Of Selected National Urban League Discourse, 1910-1985., Dennis D. Cali

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a critical analysis of selected annual conference addresses of National Urban League (NUL) executive directors. It may be regarded as a "movement study" inasmuch as it traces the conceptualization of an idea, equality, from 1910 to 1985. Richard Weaver's philosophy, theory, and critical methodology of rhetoric provide the analytical framework by which this study was conducted. Specifically Weaver's hierarchy of arguments, which may be taken as a model of his philosophy and theory, served as this dissertation's research tool. The hierarchy includes argumentation from four perspectives, ranking from ideal to base: genus, similitude, cause-effect, circumstances. The dissertation …

A Quasi-Exclusive Measurement Of Carbon-12 (Carbon-12, 3alpha)X At 2.1 Gev/Nucleon., Jon Maurice Engelage

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cross section, (sigma)(('12)C + T (--->) 3(alpha) + X) or (sigma)(3(alpha)), and excitation energy spectrum, d(sigma)(3(alpha))/dE('*), for ('12)C have been measured for 2.1 GeV/nucleon ('12)C using a 0.9(g/cm('2)) target of ('12)C. The d(sigma)(3(alpha))/dE('*) spectrum was found to include excitation energies in excess of 50 MeV. The dissociation of ('12)C into three (3) alpha particles at these excitation energies is evidence for clustering in the ('12)C nucleus.

The Formation And Geographic Relocation Of January Diurnal Precipitation Patterns In Louisiana And Southeastern Texas (Rainfall, Meteorology, Cyclogenesis, Synoptic Climatology)., Gregory Edward Faiers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The diurnal patterns of hourly precipitation events in Louisiana and southeastern Texas in January have varied over space and time. Distinct spatial patterns were observed so that southern Texas had morning maximums throughout the study period while a southwest to northeast band of morning precipitation shifted south and east from eastern Texas in the 1950's into central Louisiana in the 1960's and 1970's. Southeastern Louisiana maintained an afternoon pattern throughout the period. The morning precipitation in southern Texas is the result of the diurnal variation in cyclogenesis, especially off the Texas-Gulf coast. A southwest to northeast band of mid-morning precipitation …

The Content Of Implicit Leadership Theories: An Investigation Of Achievement Orientation, Task Orientation, And Relationships Orientation Under Varied Task Difficulty And Achievement Conditions., Joseph King Kavanaugh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study of cognitive categorization explores the content of the schema "emergent leader." Three variables, each with two levels, are rotated to form eight leader profiles. These variables are achievement, task, and relationships orientations. Each profile is evaluated by subjects on two dependent measures, leader qualifications and leader acceptance. Profiles are rank-ordered based on ratings given, establishing the schema structures for qualified leader and acceptable leader, which in turn establish minimal conditions for leader emergence. The emergent leader is defined as one who is both qualified and acceptable to group members. Level of task difficulty and the perceiver's achievement motivation …

Resistance To Cercospora Oryzae In Rice (Physiologic Races, Histopathology)., Dip Narayan Sah Jan 1986

Resistance To Cercospora Oryzae In Rice (Physiologic Races, Histopathology)., Dip Narayan Sah

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Isolates of Cercospora oryzae were readily obtained by incubating pieces of surface sterilized diseased leaf or leaf sheath samples in a moist chamber at 28 C. Sporulation on culture media was significantly higher following incubation at 28 C on cornmeal agar than on water agar, V-8 juice agar, and potato-dextrose agar. Narrow brown leaf spot lesions developed on leaves when inoculated plants were placed inside a humidified chamber for 1 to 16 days. It was possible to differentiate resistant cultivars from susceptible cultivars when 3-wk-old plants were inoculated. Single spore isolates of C. oryzae were isolated from the leaf and …

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin Jan 1986

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Colonial South Carolina's cadastral pattern evolved as the product of a variety of factors. Foremost was the ability of settlers to choose the sites of their landholdings. This authority was limited, however, by official policies that prevented settlers from determining the size, shape, and quality of land in their grants. Expressed rules for surveying riparian and inland tracts in rectangular shapes resulted in a more regular pattern of landownership than is generally assumed in a metes and bounds survey. Within the guidelines of these and other policies, colonist nonetheless were permitted to occupy land in non-contiguous tracts resulting in a …

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson Jan 1986

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Textbooks are important representative statements of certified and legitimated knowledge within an academic discipline, and the manner in which introductory sociology textbooks assess society reflect the power and sophistication of theories in discerning social patterns and structures. That the pivotal historical event of the Vietnam War and its implications for contemporary American social institutions was virtually omitted in our sample of one hundred-twenty textbooks raises critical issues for sociology. Content analysis of Vietnam War era textbooks (1954-1975) revealed 75% of the sample, divided among four major research orienting paradigms extant in sociology, ignored mention of the war and only the …

Normally graded parallel laminae, ranging in thickness from less than 1 mm to several centimeters, are the most common small-scale sedimentary structure. These thin beds grade from either sand or silt to very fine clay; concentrations of foraminifers at the top of the fine clays are common. Microcross-stratification, thin distorted layers, and microfracturing are rather common; reworked plant material, mica, and volcanic shards are abundant. -from Authors

The Role Of Task Manipulations On The Invariant Phasing Characteristics Of A Generalized Motor Program (Relative Timing)., Carol Ann Wood Jan 1986

The Role Of Task Manipulations On The Invariant Phasing Characteristics Of A Generalized Motor Program (Relative Timing)., Carol Ann Wood

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four experiments are reported that investigate the role of relative timing as an invariant characteristic of the generalized motor program. Based upon the concept of a generalized motor program, relative time as an invariant characteristic, should remain constant when variant features of a movement are manipulated. In the present series of experiments, a practice and transfer paradigm was used to investigate the influence of required parameter modifications on the relative timing characteristics during the transfer performance of a practiced three-component movement response. Following 150 training trials (100 trials on Day 1 and 50 trials on Day 2), subjects (n = …

Effect Of Ownership Structure On Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of Various Organizational Forms (Stochastic Frontier, Allocative Efficiency)., Daniel Omer Cote Jan 1986

Effect Of Ownership Structure On Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of Various Organizational Forms (Stochastic Frontier, Allocative Efficiency)., Daniel Omer Cote

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research aims at testing the effects of ownership structure on efficiency of various organizational forms: privately-owned regulated electric utilities (PR), publicly-owned electric utilities (PU), and consumer-owned cooperative electric utilities (CO). Because of the attenuation of their structure of property rights and high enforcement costs, it is expected that all three organizational forms (PR, PU, CO) will show some level of inefficiency. CO is expected to be more efficient than PR and PU since it shows: (a) more homogeneity of interest among principals; (b) more individual ownership claim over the assets; (c) a simpler political market (efficiency as the main …
