Effect Of Daily Restriction And Age At Initiation Of A Skip-A-Day Program For Young Broiler Breeders., H. R. Wilson, D. R. Ingram, F. B. Mather, R. H. Harms

Faculty Publications

Two experiments were conducted with Cobb feather sex broiler breeders comparing skip-a-day (SAD) feeding programs which began at either 2, 4, 6 or 8 wk of age. A fifth program, daily restriction started at 2 wk of age, was also compared. Chicks hatched in December and July, respectively, in Experiments 1 and 2 were exposed to natural daylight until 20 wk of age. All birds were fed ad libitum until the respective restriction programs began. All grower programs terminated at 20 wk of age. A breeder diet was given daily after 20 wk. Males and females were grown together. Sexual …

Early Embryonic Development In Vitro By Coculture With Oviductal Epithelial Cells In Pigs, K. L. White, K. Hehnke, L. F. Rickords, L. L. Southern, D. L. Thompson, T. C. Wood Jan 1989

Early Embryonic Development In Vitro By Coculture With Oviductal Epithelial Cells In Pigs, K. L. White, K. Hehnke, L. F. Rickords, L. L. Southern, D. L. Thompson, T. C. Wood

Faculty Publications

This experiment was designed to evaluate the ability of three different somatic cell cultures to promote development of early cleavage stage pig embryos. A total of 245 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, and 16-cell pig embryos were cocultured for 5 days with porcine oviductal epithelial cells (POEC), porcine fetal fibroblast monolayer (PEF), a combined POEC and PEF coculture system (PEF-POEC), or Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium alone (DMEM). Embryos were collected at slaughter from the reproductive tracts of superovulated prepubertal gilts. Embryos were recovered, evaluated, and randomly placed in one of the four treatment groups. POEC were recovered from oviductal flushes, washed, and …

Effect Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A And Excess Calcium On Growth And Tibia Calcium And Phosphorus Concentration In Uninfected And Eimeria Acervulina-Infected Chicks., K. L. Watkins, D. B. Vagnoni, L. L. Southern Jan 1989

Effect Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A And Excess Calcium On Growth And Tibia Calcium And Phosphorus Concentration In Uninfected And Eimeria Acervulina-Infected Chicks., K. L. Watkins, D. B. Vagnoni, L. L. Southern

Faculty Publications

Two identical trials were conducted with 5 to 14-day-old broiler chicks. Sodium zeolite A (NZA, 0 and .75%) and Ca (1.0 and 1.5%) were fed to both uninfected and Eimeria acervulina-infected chicks resulting in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Coccidial infection reduced weight gain and gain:feed (P less than .01), and tibia ash, Ca, and Ca:P ratio (P less than .05). Excess dietary Ca reduced (P less than .05) weight gain and tibia ash in uninfected chicks but had no effect (P greater than .10) in coccidiosis-infected chicks (Ca x coccidiosis interaction, P less than …

Localization Of Tissue Factor In The Normal Vessel Wall And In The Atherosclerotic Plaque, J. N. Wilcox, K. M. Smith, S. M. Schwartz, D. Gordon Jan 1989

Localization Of Tissue Factor In The Normal Vessel Wall And In The Atherosclerotic Plaque, J. N. Wilcox, K. M. Smith, S. M. Schwartz, D. Gordon

Faculty Publications

Tissue factor (TF)-producing cells were identified in normal human vessels and atherosclerotic plaques by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry using a specific riboprobe for TF mRNA and a polyclonal antibody directed against human TF protein. TF mRNA and protein were absent from endothelial cells lining normal internal mammary artery and saphenous vein samples. In normal vessels TF was found to be synthesized in scattered cells present in the tunica media as well as fibroblast-like adventitial cells surrounding vessels. Atherosclerotic plaques contained many cells synthesizing TF mRNA and protein. Macrophages present as foam cells and monocytes adjacent to the cholesterol clefts …

Incorporation Of Atmospheric Oxygen Into The Carbonyl Functionality Of The Protochlorophyllide Isocyclic Ring., C. J. Walker, K. E. Mansfield, K. M. Smith, P. A. Castelfranco

Faculty Publications

Detached cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. Beit Alpha) cotyledons incubated in darkness with 5-aminolaevulinic acid and either 16O2 air (control) or 18O2 in N2 accumulated protochlorophyllide. This was converted into methyl phaeoporphyrin alpha 5 and analysed by mass spectrometry. The molecular ion of the methyl phaeoporphyrin alpha 5 derived from the 18O2 incubation was 2 mass units greater than that of the control, establishing that the oxo oxygen atom of the isocyclic ring is derived from atmospheric oxygen.

The Biosynthesis Of The Chromophore Of Phycocyanin. Pathway Of Reduction Of Biliverdin To Phycocyanobilin., S. B. Brown, J. A. Holroyd, D. I. Vernon, Y. K. Shim, K. M. Smith Jan 1989

The Biosynthesis Of The Chromophore Of Phycocyanin. Pathway Of Reduction Of Biliverdin To Phycocyanobilin., S. B. Brown, J. A. Holroyd, D. I. Vernon, Y. K. Shim, K. M. Smith

Faculty Publications

The later stages in the pathway of biosynthesis of phycocyanobilin, the chromophore of phycocyanin, were studied by using radiolabelled intermediates. Three possible pathways from biliverdin IX-alpha to phycocyanobilin were considered. 14C-labelled samples of key intermediates in two of the pathways, 3-vinyl-18-ethyl biliverdin IX-alpha and 3-ethyl-18-vinyl biliverdin IX-alpha, were synthesized chemically and were administered to cultures of Cyanidium caldarium that were actively synthesizing photosynthetic pigments in the light. Neither of these two compounds was apparently incorporated into the phycobiliprotein chromophore, suggesting that two of the three pathways were not operative. By elimination, the results imply that the third possible pathway, which …

Efficacy Of Phospholipid Analysis In Determining Microbial Biomass In Sediments, R. H. Findlay, G. M. King, L. Watling Jan 1989

Efficacy Of Phospholipid Analysis In Determining Microbial Biomass In Sediments, R. H. Findlay, G. M. King, L. Watling

Faculty Publications

Improvements in the analysis of lipid-bound phosphates resulted in a simplified and sensitive method for determining microbial biomass in sediments. Sensitivity was enhanced over previous methods by use of a dye, malachite green, which when complexed with phosphomolybdate at low pH has a high extinction coefficient (at 610 nm). The use of a persulfate oxidation technique to liberate phosphate from lipids increased the simplicity and safety of the method relative to the traditional perchloric acid digestions. The modified method was both accurate (yielding quantitative recoveries of cells added to sediments) and precise (coefficient of variation of less than 5% for …

Hypertension As A Cause Of Lower Than Expected Death Rates From Coronary Artery Disease Among Blacks., R. Cooper, B. E. Simmons Jan 1989

Hypertension As A Cause Of Lower Than Expected Death Rates From Coronary Artery Disease Among Blacks., R. Cooper, B. E. Simmons

Faculty Publications

Coronary risk factors are more prevalent among blacks than whites in the United States. It is therefore paradoxical that age-adjusted death rates for coronary artery disease (CAD) are similar in the two racial groups. The major risk factor for CAD that is more common among blacks than whites is hypertension, which increases the risk of CAD by two- to fourfold, depending on the presence of smoking, hypercholesterolemia, or other factors. Two general hypotheses have been advanced to explain the lower than expected CAD rates among blacks: (1) the presence of some protective factors, such as increased levels of high density …

Coronary Arteriography And Coronary Bypass Survey Among Whites And Other Racial Groups Relative To Hospital-Based Incidence Rates For Coronary Artery Disease: Findings From Nhds, E. Ford, R. Cooper, A. Castaner, B. Simmons, M. Mar Jan 1989

Coronary Arteriography And Coronary Bypass Survey Among Whites And Other Racial Groups Relative To Hospital-Based Incidence Rates For Coronary Artery Disease: Findings From Nhds, E. Ford, R. Cooper, A. Castaner, B. Simmons, M. Mar

Faculty Publications

To assess racial differences in health care utilization for coronary artery disease (CAD) the data of the National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS) from 1979-84 were examined. Discharge rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were utilized as a measure of hospital-based incidence and relative need for the designated cardiac procedures. Although 35-74 year old Black men had discharge rates of AMI that were 77 per cent of those observed for White men, they underwent coronary arteriography half as often and were only a third as likely to have coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Black women in this age range were …

Comparison Of Clinical Isolates Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Klebsiella Sp. Isolated From Summer Harvested Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)., Thomas Elbert Graham Jan 1989

Comparison Of Clinical Isolates Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Klebsiella Sp. Isolated From Summer Harvested Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)., Thomas Elbert Graham

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Suspected environmental fecal coliform positive Klebsiella sp. oyster isolates were analyzed and compared to human clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Oyster isolates were urease negative (at 24 hours) and were identified as K. pneumoniae using API 20E biochemical test strips. The ability to produce fecal coliform reactions was lost by 65% of the oyster isolates after undergoing several passages on brain-heart-infusion agar at 20$\sp\circ$ to 25$\sp\circ$C. Tests with 4-methylumbelliferyl-B-d-glucuronide (MUG) found both oyster and clinical isolates to be MUG negative. Moles % guanine plus cytosine (mol% G + C) information indicated that oyster isolates had mol% G + C values …

Factors Affecting Supervisors' Use Of Corrective Actions Following Poor Performance., Wanda Ann Trahan Jan 1989

Factors Affecting Supervisors' Use Of Corrective Actions Following Poor Performance., Wanda Ann Trahan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relationships between supervisor, subordinate, and contextual variables and corrective action severity. Hypotheses were tested using questionnaire data from 103 nursing supervisors in 15 hospitals. Supervisors were asked to describe an incident of subordinate poor performance, indicate the corrective action used, then complete questions measuring incident severity, attributions, initiating structure and consideration leader styles, intent of the supervisor, effectiveness ratings of the corrective action, influence of contextual variables, and subordinate likableness. Analyses confirmed that severity of the incident of poor performance, supervisor attributions, and supervisor intent were related to corrective action severity. Also, corrective actions rated …

The Fourier Transform In White Noise Calculus, Hui Hsiung Kuo

Faculty Publications

Let S* be the space of termpered distributions with standard Gaussian measure μ. Let (S) ⊂ L2(μ) ⊂ (S)* be a Gel'fand triple over the white noise space (S*, μ). The S-transform (Sφ{symbol})(ζ) = ∫S* φ{symbol}(x + ζ) dμ(x), ζ ∈ S, on L2(μ) extends to a U-functional U[φ{symbol}](ζ) = «exp(·, ζ), φ{symbol} a ̊ exp( -∥ζ∥2 2), ζ ∈ S, on (S)*. Let D consist of φ{symbol} in (S)* such that U[φ{symbol}](-iζ1T) exp[-2-1 ∫Tζ(t)2 dt], ζ ∈ S, is a U-functional. The Fourier transform of φ{symbol} in D is defined as the generalized Brownian functional φ{symbol}̌ in (S)* such …

Simultaneous Diagonalization Of Matrices Parametrized By A Projective Algebraic Curve, William A. Adkins Jan 1989

Simultaneous Diagonalization Of Matrices Parametrized By A Projective Algebraic Curve, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

If K is an algebraic function field in one variable over an algebraically closed field k, then conditions are presented to insure that a matrix A ∈ M (K) is diagonalizable by means of a similarity transformation T ∈ GL(n, k). This result generalizes results of Friedland [1] and Motzkin-Taussky [4]. © 1989. n

A Note On Negami's Polynomial Invariants For Graphs, James G. Oxley Jan 1989

A Note On Negami's Polynomial Invariants For Graphs, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

Negami has introduced two polynomials for graphs and proved a number of properties of them. In this note, it is shown that these polynomials are intimately related to the well-known Tutte polynomial. This fact is used, together with a result of Brylawski, to answer a question of Negami. © 1989.

The Regular Matroids With No 5-Wheel Minor, James G. Oxley Jan 1989

The Regular Matroids With No 5-Wheel Minor, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

For r in {3, 4}, the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to M(Wr), the rank-r wheel, has an easily described structure. This paper determines all graphs with no W5-minor and uses this to show that the class of regular matroids with no M(W5)-minor also has a relatively simple structure. © 1989.

A Characterization Of Certain Excluded-Minor Classes Of Matroids, James G. Oxley Jan 1989

A Characterization Of Certain Excluded-Minor Classes Of Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

A result of Walton and the author establishes that every 3-connected matroid of rank and corank at least three has one of five six-element rank-3 self-dual matroids as a minor. This paper characterizes two classes of matroids that arise when one excludes as minors three of these five matroids. One of these results extends the author's characterization of the ternary matroids with no M(K4)-minor, while the other extends Tutte's excluded-minor characterization of binary matroids. © 1989, Academic Press Limited. Regularization, Pseudofunction, And Hadamard Finite Part, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal

Faculty Publications

First, we discuss and correlate the various types of regularizations available in the literature for the singular function H(x) xk, where k is an integer and H(x) is the Heaviside function. Then we present the corresponding regularization for the function r-k, where r is the radial distance in Rn. Thereafter, we express the recently discovered distributional derivatives of this function in terms of pseudofunctional language commonly used in the Coulomb, gravitational, and interparticle potentials where the function 1 r plays a fundamental role. © 1989.

Reference Standards For Flow Cytometry And Application In Comparative Studies Of Nuclear Dna Content, Terrence R. Tiersch, Robert W. Chandler, Stephen S. Wachtel, Sherman Elias

Faculty Publications

Nuclear DNA mass in cells from a reference species can be used to obtain high‐resolution estimates of DNA mass from a target species. In our study of DNA mass in cells from 45 selected species, representing each of the major vertebrate classes, we have obtained values of from 1.5 to 110.0 pg of DNA. Because values in or near this range would be expected in the study of nuclear DNA mass in vertebrates and other organisms, the species in this report can provide a useful catalogue of references for comparative studies of DNA. Real-Time Effective Stress Evaluation In Shales: Pore Pressure And Permeability Estimation., Jean-Louis Jerome Alixant Jan 1989

Real-Time Effective Stress Evaluation In Shales: Pore Pressure And Permeability Estimation., Jean-Louis Jerome Alixant

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, a general method to determine the vertical effective stress in shales while drilling is developed. The concept is applied to the development of a model restricted to sodium smectitic shales, which are interpreted using Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) resistivity data. Effective stress is introduced as the key parameter in the evaluation of petrophysical properties of shales, which provides a wide range of applications to the method. The model comprises two interpretation modules: an electrical module converts shale resistivity into porosity using a new formation factor relationship adapted from previous work, and a mechanical module relates porosity to void ratio …

Constitutive Equations For Large Deformation, Rate-Dependent Plasticity For Metal Alloys., Louay Nadhim Mohammad Jan 1989

Constitutive Equations For Large Deformation, Rate-Dependent Plasticity For Metal Alloys., Louay Nadhim Mohammad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A system of constitutive equations is proposed that describes the viscoplastic behavior of a class of metal alloys when subjected to large deformations. The model is purely elastic before the plastic state is reached, and becomes elastic/viscoplastic after the plastic state has been exceeded. Three main assumptions are made with regard to the strain-rate dependency in the proposed formulation. The inelastic strain rate tensor is assumed to be normal to each point of the rate dependent convex yield surface. The initial yield stress obtained from uniaxial tests is assumed to be dependent on the rate of strain loading. Finally, the …

Comparison Of Ascorbic Acid Content Of Super‐Market Versus Roadside Stand Produce, R. J. Bushway, P. R. Helper, J. King, B. Perkins, M. Krishnan Jan 1989

Comparison Of Ascorbic Acid Content Of Super‐Market Versus Roadside Stand Produce, R. J. Bushway, P. R. Helper, J. King, B. Perkins, M. Krishnan

Faculty Publications

Seven vegetables and one fruit from two roadside stands and two major local supermarkets were analyzed for their ascorbic acid content. Produce was sampled during a nine week period from late July through September of 1987. Significant differences at the 0.05 level for ascorbic acid were observed between supermarket and roadside stand produce for potato, cauliflower, cabbage and tomato while no significant differences were found between cantaloupe, broccoli, green peppers and spinach from either market. Cabbage was the only supermarket item that was significantly higher in ascorbic acid concentration. Very little dehydroascorbic acid was shown to be present in these …

Finiteness Theorems For Forms Over Number Fields., Jenna Price Carpenter Jan 1989

Finiteness Theorems For Forms Over Number Fields., Jenna Price Carpenter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1932, E. Witt showed how the collection of bilinear forms over a field $E$ can be made into a ring called the Witt ring, $W(E)$, of $E$. Properties of bilinear forms over a field often are reflected in the algebraic properties of its Witt ring. Perlis, Szymiczek, and Conner give criteria for global fields to be Witt equivalent; that is, to have isomorphic Witt rings. We refine these criteria to obtain finite, necessary and sufficient conditions to insure Witt equivalence of number fields. These conditions yield several finiteness statements for forms over number fields. Among them, for a fixed …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to expand the theoretical knowledge of the March and Simon (1958) "decision to participate" model as modified by Jackofsky (1982, 1984) and examined by Jackofsky and Peters (1983). Specifically, the study examined the relationship between employee turnover intentions and various predictors of turnover, including (a) desirability of movement (organizational commitment); (b) ease of movement; (c) the interaction of perceived desirability of movement (organizational commitment) and perceived ease of movement from the organization; (d) job satisfaction; (e) central life interest; and (f) selected employee demographic variables. Two-hundred forty Extension agents employed by Louisiana Cooperative Extension …

Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek Jan 1989

Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the primary aim of this dissertation to draw attention to Voegelin's political philosophy and to place it at the center of the conduct of political inquiry, by criticizing positivistic political epistemology. Though scientism had become a dominant commitment, it does not provide an appropriate approach to political knowledge. Making reality dependent on methodology, it neglects important political existence, and fails to ask deeper questions about the truth-content political reality. However, there is an extra-spatio-temporal reality, that we can know, albeit imperfectly, and not discovered by the modern scientific methods. By means of the restoration and "retheoretization" of the …
