Vegetative Compatibility Groups Of Fusarium Oxysporum F. Sp. Lycopersici And Nonpathogenic Strains Of F. Oxysporum And An Isozyme Analysis Of Pathogenic Populations., Karol Sue Elias Jan 1989

Vegetative Compatibility Groups Of Fusarium Oxysporum F. Sp. Lycopersici And Nonpathogenic Strains Of F. Oxysporum And An Isozyme Analysis Of Pathogenic Populations., Karol Sue Elias

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A worldwide collection of 112 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) from tomato was examined for pathogenicity, colony morphology, vegetative compatibility, and isozyme polymorphism. There were no correlations among colony morphology with age of culture, race, vegetative compatibility group (VCG), or geographic origin. Vegetative compatibility group 0030 contained all three races of FOL from throughout the world and all colony morphology types. Vegetative compatibility groups 0031 and 0032 contained races 1 and 2, but their geographic ranges were somewhat more limited. In addition, 50 isolates of FOL were the sole members of their own VCGs. Thus, there was …

An Evaluation Of Multiple Aspects Of Asthmatic Functioning: Stress Responders Versus Stress Nonresponders., Anthony Joseph Goreczny Jan 1989

An Evaluation Of Multiple Aspects Of Asthmatic Functioning: Stress Responders Versus Stress Nonresponders., Anthony Joseph Goreczny

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to differentiate between asthmatics whose daily symptoms are related to daily stress level (stress responders) and those whose symptoms have no apparent relation to stress (stress nonresponders) and to indentify differences between the two groups. Using correlational procedures, 15 stress responders and 19 stress nonresponders were identified and compared along various dimensions. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and covariance (MANCOVA) procedures revealed no significant differences between the two groups with respect to affective/emotional responding, clinical symptomatology, or cognitions about illness and asthma. In addition, regression models using the Asthma Symptom Checklist Panic-Fear subscale, a …

The Etiology And Control Of Pepper Anthracnose., James Forbes Hadden Jan 1989

The Etiology And Control Of Pepper Anthracnose., James Forbes Hadden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. capsici, C. acutatum, and C. coccodes incite pepper anthracnose. Species were differentiated based on their conidial and colony morphology as well as colony growth rates. In a survey of southern Louisiana pepper fields in September, 1987, anthracnose incidence ranged from 5 to 75 percent. Colletotrichum capsici, C. gloeosporioides, and C. acutatum were the incitants of anthracnose in the fields surveyed. Reactions of bell pepper and tomato fruit to isolates of C. gloeosporioides, C. capsici, C. acutatum, and C. coccodes from pepper and tomato were determined by injecting mature fruit with conidial suspensions. All isolates caused characteristic anthracnose …

Description And Meaning In Three Novels By Gustave Flaubert., Corrada Biazzo Curry Jan 1989

Description And Meaning In Three Novels By Gustave Flaubert., Corrada Biazzo Curry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on the problematic of description and meaning in literature, based on three master-works by Gustave Flaubert: Madame Bovary, Salammbo, and L'Education sentimentale. Description generally tends to create digressions and gratuitous accumulations that can break the narrative development. However, in the classical realist text descriptive details are to represent a global image and be available to a possible interpretive recuperation which can be mimetic and establish the basic story line, or symbolic, that is, primarily connoting the themes of the novel or the characters' feelings. Using Flaubert's works as examples, this study analyzes the constant tensions of these …

The Effect Of Personal Journals On Fourth-Grade Students' Attitudes Toward Reading And Writing., Nancy B. Cothern Jan 1989

The Effect Of Personal Journals On Fourth-Grade Students' Attitudes Toward Reading And Writing., Nancy B. Cothern

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between belief systems and attitudes toward reading and writing and the effect of personal journal writing on those attitudes and beliefs. By combining three established areas of research (the affective component of attitude, the reading-writing relationship, and the self-defining nature of personal narrative), the use of personal journals was tested as an effective means for contributing to the development of positive attitudes. Subjects were 95 fourth graders enrolled in four intact classes which were randomly assigned to experimental or control conditions Pre-/post-assessments included administration of reading and writing attitude scales …

Interacting Rydberg Channels In Diatomic Molecules., Ning Yi Du Jan 1989

Interacting Rydberg Channels In Diatomic Molecules., Ning Yi Du

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new model for a class of heteronuclear diatomic molecules is presented. This model readily combines multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) with a nonperturbative Fermi-type analysis. Applications to a series of alkali-He dimers, such as CsHe, have shown that this very simple model can give results (e.g. Born-Oppenheimer potential curves) very close to those from more elaborated methods (e.g. $\ell$-dependent pseudopotential method). Applications to heteronuclear rare gas dimers, such as ArXe, give the first detailed interpretation and classification of some of the observed spectra, which are too complicated to be studied by conventional molecular methods. Another MQDT application is also …

Evaluation And Improvement Of Maintenance Scheduling Techniques., Nat Khemakavat Jan 1989

Evaluation And Improvement Of Maintenance Scheduling Techniques., Nat Khemakavat

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this research is to evaluate present maintenance scheduling systems and to suggest improvements or alternatives. The widely used priority-based maintenance scheduling system is shown to be inappropriate in a variety of scheduling circumstances. The major reason is the omission of any type of cost consideration. To overcome this shortcoming, a new maintenance scheduling model is proposed. Instead of using work-order priority as the primary scheduling criteria, the new system uses cost as the key scheduling component. That is, maintenance jobs are scheduled with the objective of minimizing total maintenance cost. Maintenance scheduling strategies based on the cost …

Lipopolysaccharide Serotyping Of Vibrio Vulnificus., Stephen Jeffrey Martin Jan 1989

Lipopolysaccharide Serotyping Of Vibrio Vulnificus., Stephen Jeffrey Martin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current schemes used to serotype Vibrio vulnificus are based on direct bacterial agglutination using polyclonal rabbit antisera. During the course of serotyping Louisiana V. vulnificus isolates we failed to observe a reproducible agglutination profile for these isolates. The major obstacle in producing serovar specific sera has been the failure to produce high titered anti-LPS sera in rabbits. Anti-LPS serum from rabbits immunized with formalin-killed, heat-killed, or acetone dried whole cell vaccines and LPS-carrier conjugates uniformly produced titers $\leq 320$. Separation of anti-LPS activity from whole sera by affinity chromatography also yielded low titered antisera. A typing system predicated on the …

Age Level Differences In Children's Use Of An Aesthetic Stance When Responding To Literature., Joyce E. Many Jan 1989

Age Level Differences In Children's Use Of An Aesthetic Stance When Responding To Literature., Joyce E. Many

Average somatic cell counts in secretion from infected and uninfected quarters were …

Children's Ability To Utilize The Mnemonic Keyword Method: An Educational Application Within Fourth-Grade Classrooms., Nancy Lynn Williams Jan 1989

Children's Ability To Utilize The Mnemonic Keyword Method: An Educational Application Within Fourth-Grade Classrooms., Nancy Lynn Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Research has shown that the mnemonic keyword method is an effective study strategy under controlled laboratory-type situations with subjects learning decontextualized facts. Very few studies have actually tested the mnemonic keyword method within the context of a normal fourth grade classroom and learning situation. The purpose of this study, then, was to demonstrate the viability of the mnemonic keyword method as a study strategy when compared to notetaking/outlining, a common study strategy recommended by fourth grade curricula. The subjects were 106 fourth graders enrolled in four classes at a rural elementary school. Data were collected over a four week period …

The Pious City: Social Welfare And The Christian Enlightenment In Eighteenth Century Modena. (Volumes I And Ii)., Susan Vandiver Nicassio Jan 1989

The Pious City: Social Welfare And The Christian Enlightenment In Eighteenth Century Modena. (Volumes I And Ii)., Susan Vandiver Nicassio

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation examines reform in the enlightened state of Modena by looking at the opere pie, "pious works" which included dowries, health care, education and shelter for the poor. The Enlightenment is considered in a social and economic context, and social welfare is examined in terms of the familial, religious and civic piety which shaped these charities between 1690 and 1796. The study is constructed around the Araldi, a merchant family whose outstanding members (priests and physicians) rose rapidly in the Modenese administrative class during the eighteenth century. It examines the patronage network of the court and the university, and …

Hegemonic Stability Theory: An Examination., Victor Edward Sachse Jan 1989

Hegemonic Stability Theory: An Examination., Victor Edward Sachse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hegemonic stability theory been the focus of substantial scholarly attention in recent years. Hegomonic stability theory is a theory that attempt to explain changes in the degree to which the international political economy is "open" or "restricted" on the basis of the power relations between the major states in the world system. Specifically, the theory holds that markets will tend to be most open when one state is clearly predominant, particularly in terms of economic power, and conversely, that markets will tend to be restricted when there is no predominant power. From the end of World War II until the …

Coping With Stress: Adjustment To Visual Loss In Diabetes Mellitus., Linda Roussel Upton Jan 1989

Coping With Stress: Adjustment To Visual Loss In Diabetes Mellitus., Linda Roussel Upton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Individuals with diabetes face complex health management tasks over a long period and must cope with serious long-term medical complications including retinopathy and resulting blindness and disability. Although it may be expected that psychological problems may accompany loss of vision in adulthood, little research attention has been given to psychological coping and adjustment in this group. Using a stress and coping model, this investigation focused on identifying and measuring stressor, cognitive, and coping variables in order to determine their associations with psychological and functional adjustment in individuals with adult-onset loss of vision. Forty diabetic subjects with vision loss requiring rehabilitation …

From Plantation Laborers To Ardent Nationalists: Koreans' Experiences In America And Their Search For Ethnic Identity, 1903-1924., Young Ho Son Jan 1989

From Plantation Laborers To Ardent Nationalists: Koreans' Experiences In America And Their Search For Ethnic Identity, 1903-1924., Young Ho Son

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of pioneer Korean immigrants from the beginning of the "mass immigration" in 1903 to the passage of the Oriental Exclusion Act of 1924. The main emphasis is upon their background and experiences, and in particular upon their struggles to maintain their ethnic identity and to create for themselves an American identity. In addressing these themes, this study focuses on three major questions. First, in order to understand why conservative, land-bound Koreans left their home country for an unknown land, this study analyzes historical, socioeconomic, and political forces which worked together in both Korean and American …

Carbonaceous Cherts Of The Swaziland Supergroup, Barberton Mountain Land, Southern Africa., Maud Maureen Walsh Jan 1989

Carbonaceous Cherts Of The Swaziland Supergroup, Barberton Mountain Land, Southern Africa., Maud Maureen Walsh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The well-preserved carbonaceous cherts of the early Archean (3,200 to 3,500 Ma) Swaziland Supergroup of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa contain fossils that are among the Earth's oldest. Fossils are rare in the carbonaceous cherts, however. Petrographic and geochemical analyses of the carbonaceous cherts yield information useful to the study of early life and to the general question of the nature of silicification of early Archean rocks. The filamentous microfossils whose morphologies, as well as the texture of the encompassing laminations, suggest an affinity to modern microbial mat-dwelling cyanobacteria or bacteria, are the most probable biological structures identified during …

Illness Behavior And The Preoperative Prediction Of Postoperative Pain In Cholecystectomy Patients., Lannis Lee Tynes Jr Jan 1989

Illness Behavior And The Preoperative Prediction Of Postoperative Pain In Cholecystectomy Patients., Lannis Lee Tynes Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eighty (80) elective cholecystectomy patients volunteered to participate in the present study which assessed the relation between past illness behavior and the report of pain following surgery. A review of the literature indicated that demographic variables (e.g., sex, age) and general psychological variables (e.g. state anxiety) have been the subject of many studies attempting to predict postoperative pain, yet learning and behavioral factors such as past illness behavior and familial modelling of illness behavior have not. Preoperative assessments included the Illness Behavior Inventory (IBI; Turkat, 1983), the Familial Illness Behavior Inventory (IBI-F; derived from the IBI), the State Trait Anxiety …

Queueing And Stability Analysis Of Buffered Csma/Cd Local Networks., Young Keun Yoon Jan 1989

Queueing And Stability Analysis Of Buffered Csma/Cd Local Networks., Young Keun Yoon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation develops a joint probability generating function for the message quene lengths in a slotted p-persistent CSMA/CD (Carrier-Sense Multiple-Access with Collision Detection) system with a finite population of buffered users. Each user is assumed to have an independent and identical process of packet generation and an infinite buffer for storing outstanding packets. A closed form formula is obtained for the generating function in case of a two user system. Analytic formulas for the stability condition of a p-persistent CSMA/CD system are derived using the generating function. The range of the transmission probability p that leads to stability is examined …

Physical Attractiveness: Effects On Trained And Untrained Observers' Ratings Of Heterosocial Skill And Anxiety In Female College Students., James Douglas Calvert Jan 1989

Physical Attractiveness: Effects On Trained And Untrained Observers' Ratings Of Heterosocial Skill And Anxiety In Female College Students., James Douglas Calvert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Physical attractiveness has been shown to be an important interpersonal variable. Physically attractive persons are perceived by others as possessing high levels of positive characteristics such as intelligence, competence, and warmth. Although research from social psychology has suggested that physical attractiveness has a major impact on peoples' perceptions, research on the behavioral assessment of social skill and anxiety has given little attention to the effects of physical attractiveness on ratings of skill and anxiety. The present study was designed to assess the effects of physical attractiveness on ratings of heterosocial skill and anxiety. A 4(groups) $\times$ 2(Observers) factorial design that …

Developmental Processes In Leader-Member Exchanges., Caroline Cooper Wilhelm Jan 1989

Developmental Processes In Leader-Member Exchanges., Caroline Cooper Wilhelm

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to specify more fully the sequence of events by which leader-member relationships are formed. A model of leader-member exchange (LMX) development originally proposed by Dienesch and Liden (1986) was expanded with findings from role theory, attribution theory, and equity theory, and a set of hypotheses was derived for testing. One hundred forty-two subordinates and their respective supervisors (n = 53) from four divisions of a large manufacturing organization provided data for the study. Questionnaires and cover letters assuring anonymity were distributed to subjects, and completed questionnaires were returned directly to the researcher by …

The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker Jan 1989

The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three studies were performed to determine the relationship between blood lactate, CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung, and ventilation during exercise. First, the method of determining the lactate threshold by use of log-log and semilog transformations developed by Beaver and his colleagues was modified to provide an objective method of determining the threshold which resulted in a significantly better fit (p $<$.05) of the log-log model to the data. Second, to test the theory that the increase in CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung due to bicarbonate buffering of H+ from lactic acid causes the rise in ventilation out of proportion to VO$\sb2$ at the ventilatory threshold, the lactate thresholds of these subjects were used to predict their ventilatory thresholds. The lactate threshold determined by the modified log-log model/method was a poor predictor with an insignificant relationship between the lactate and ventilatory thresholds (p $>$.05). In the third study, six subjects were tested during 4 sessions to determine the relationship between ventilation and CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung during exercise and also during rest and exercise while CO$\sb2$ was being inhaled. This relationship …

The Relation Of Cognition, Emotion And Behavior To The Prediction Of Depressive Symptomatology In Referred And Nonreferred Adolescents., Tracy Lynn Cole Jan 1989

The Relation Of Cognition, Emotion And Behavior To The Prediction Of Depressive Symptomatology In Referred And Nonreferred Adolescents., Tracy Lynn Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have shown an increased interest in depression in children and adolescents in the last few years. As a result, a body of research exists which has focused on the cognitive and behavioral aspects of depression in children and adolescents. Few studies, however, have examined the relation of emotion to depression. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the relation of cognition, emotion and behavior to depression. Eighty adolescents (nonreferred) from public schools in a southern city and seventy-three adolescents (emotionally disturbed) from a psychiatric facility in the same area participated in the study. Each adolescent completed self-report …

La Programacion Espacio/Temporal Del Relato., M. Ellen Blossman Jan 1989

La Programacion Espacio/Temporal Del Relato., M. Ellen Blossman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Treatment Of Thomas Hobbes In Twentieth Century Political Thought., David Randolph Cole Jan 1989

The Treatment Of Thomas Hobbes In Twentieth Century Political Thought., David Randolph Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the wake of the political upheavals of the twentieth century, political theorists have rediscovered the unsentimental teachings of Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes was a philosopher of order during a period of disorder--the English Civil War. He taught that sovereignty ought to be absolute and unchallengeable, so that order might be preserved. In particular, the sovereign ought to have the power to approve or disapprove political and religious teachings--in effect, to establish an unchallengeable "civil theology." Hobbesian sovereignty might preserve order, but it would also cut off political discussion and debate in summary fashion. In the twentieth century, political theorists have …

The Proposal In An Engineering Context: A Field Study Of Document Development., Terry Martin Mcconathy Jan 1989

The Proposal In An Engineering Context: A Field Study Of Document Development., Terry Martin Mcconathy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The specific goal of this field study was to develop an empirically-based description of engineering proposals as they are developed and used in their natural context; this goal was designed to provide a data base for further study addressing the general research interest of why the descriptions of proposals in technical writing textbooks vary so significantly from the types of proposals produced and used in an nonacacemic environment, specifically engineering. Using strategies borrowed and adapted from sociological and anthropological research methodologies, the study focused on collecting field-based data through interviews, field notes, questionnaires, and artifacts about the form, content, structure, …
