Polarized Radiation From Inhomogeneous Shocks., Kinwah Wu Jan 1989

Polarized Radiation From Inhomogeneous Shocks., Kinwah Wu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Strongly polarized radiation from AM Herculis binaries is believed to be due to cyclotron emission from hot magnetized plasmas. The flat optically thin spectra and strong IR polarization observed in these binaries cannot be explained by models assuming a homogeneous emission region with a simple geometry. We have therefore studied the cyclotron emission from infinite plasma cylinders with uniform magnetic fields and temperatures, but with a variety of axially symmetric electron density profiles and shown that such inhomogeneous plasmas are able to produce relatively flat spectra which cannot be produced by the homogeneous models. The polarization at low frequencies is …

Mortgage-Backed Securities And The Effect On Financial Firm Value., Krisandra A. Guidry Jan 1989

Mortgage-Backed Securities And The Effect On Financial Firm Value., Krisandra A. Guidry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the most important financial innovations in the past few years has been mortgage securitization. This dissertation examines several motives for the issuance of mortgage-backed securities and how the issuance of mortgage-backed securities affects the value of a financial intermediary. Several studies suggest that there is some benefit to mortgage-backed security offerings. Possible reasons for securitization include diversification, funding, avoidance of regulatory taxes, creation of value, and portfolio reshuffling. Much of the empirical literature on the issuance of mortgage-backed securities has focused on depository intermediary risk. However, the effect of mortgage-backed securities on firm value is unclear. The principle …

Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies And Alcohol Use As Functions Of Familial Factors., Andrew Ward Millar Jan 1989

Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies And Alcohol Use As Functions Of Familial Factors., Andrew Ward Millar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In an extension of Brown, Creamer and Stetson (1987), this study investigated the relationships between components of family life, adolescent drinking and alcohol expectancies. Alcohol expectancies are defined as the learned associations between alcohol consumption and the results of drinking. Out of 73 adolescent (12- to 18-year old) subjects screened, 55 met criteria and participated in two comparisons with multiple dependent variables. In the first of these, 15 subjects who were exposed to alcoholics for at least 75% of their lives were found to have stronger expectations that alcohol would provide cognitive and motor enhancement than did 15 matched subjects …

Mechanism Of Toxicity Of 2-Thiotriazone (Ttz) In Rats., Twintillia Murphy Tate Jan 1989

Mechanism Of Toxicity Of 2-Thiotriazone (Ttz) In Rats., Twintillia Murphy Tate

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism of action of 2-thiotriazone (TTZ) was evaluated in adult and immature rats of both sexes. TTZ produced marked pulmonary toxicity in rats that was both age and sex-dependent. It was highly toxic in male rats (oral LD50 of 4.6 mg/kg and ip LD50 of 1.4 mg/kg). Female rats were more resistant than males and immature rats (30-40 days of age) were totally resistant to TTZ toxicity. Gross and histological examination of lung tissue from rats exposed to TTZ showed severe pulmonary edema, effusion and mottling of the lungs. Significant increases in lung weights were also observed. Diethylmaleate (DEM) …

A Knowledge-Based System For Message Translation. (Volumes I And Ii)., John Mark Usher Jan 1989

A Knowledge-Based System For Message Translation. (Volumes I And Ii)., John Mark Usher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research addresses the use of a knowledge-based interface to provide the communication service of message translation. The focus of this research is on the technical feasibility of using a knowledge-based design to perform this service for programmable devices on the shop-floor. The uniqueness of this approach is in the use of a knowledge-based design for the software interface. This method of implementation is different from the procedural programming approach used in today's custom interfaces. This research asserts that use of a knowledge-based design will result in an interface system that is easier to construct and maintain than an interface …

Ecology And Epidemiology Of Rhizoctonia Foliar Blights Of Soybean., Xiao Bing Yang Jan 1989

Ecology And Epidemiology Of Rhizoctonia Foliar Blights Of Soybean., Xiao Bing Yang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Soybean (Glycine max) seedling natural infection caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, anastomosis group 1, intraspecific groups IA and IB (AG1-IA and AG1-IB), causal agents of Rhizoctonia foliar blights of soybeans, is first reported. Infections were predicted by experimental inoculum levels with r$\sp2$ = 0.77-0.87 (P $<$ 0.001). Twenty locations surveyed in 2 years in south Louisiana showed that web blight was the major disease type. Culture characteristics indicated that associated isolates were R. solani Kuhn, AG1-IB. Morphogenisis of microsclerotia from web blight isolates showed a lateral growth type different from the traditionally described loose growth type observed for sasakii-type sclerotia, indicating a genetic difference between AG1-IB and AG1-IA in R. solani. Components of Rhizoctonia aerial blight were quantified from 1986 to 1988. Primary infections were high early in the season and significantly correlated with average amount of daily rainfall. The establishment of disease foci was mainly determined by the rainfall events prior to canopy closure. Significant expansion of disease foci occurred only after canopy closure. Development of aerial blight is divided into two phases related to canopy closure. The first consists of primary infection and has a soilborne nature. Variance-to-mean ratios indicated that early infection was aggregated, and different cluster sizes were determined by paired-quadrat variance. The second phase has a leafborne nature and results in disease focus expansion. Factorial experiments under controlled conditions showed a strong influence of free moisture and plant growth stage on disease focus expansion. Disease focus radius was a linear function of accumulated free moisture hours. Diseased plants/focus and disease incidence were best fitted with circle equations. Slopes of equations were proportional to plant growth stage. Under field conditions, disease focus expansion was explained well using accumulated rain days and soybean growth stages at inoculation as predictors. Natural disease incidence late in the season was determined by distribution pattern and amount of early infection. Incorporation of an aggregation factor into a logistic disease model improved prediction.

Characterization And Potential Applications Of Cascade Arborols And Preparation Of Metallocyclic Palladium(Ii) And Rhodium(Iii) Complexes., Gregory Rufus Baker Jan 1989

Characterization And Potential Applications Of Cascade Arborols And Preparation Of Metallocyclic Palladium(Ii) And Rhodium(Iii) Complexes., Gregory Rufus Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new class of specifically shaped, highly branched molecules was prepared where the branches emanate from tetrahedral carbons. This class of molecules has been named arborols because of their topological similarity to the "Leeuwenberg" model for tropical trees. The arborols were synthesized a layer (or tier) at a time to generate cascade spheres, where the number of terminal groups per sphere increases exponentially. Initially, molecules possessing a single cascade sphere attached to simple hydrocarbon chains were prepared to develop synthetic methods and provide proof-of-concept. Several series of dumbbell shaped, two-directional arborols were prepared, where two cascade spheres are connected via …

Ambiguity And Sexuality: The Effects Of Advance Organizers On Memory Of An Ambiguous Text., Cathy Orman Castille Jan 1989

Ambiguity And Sexuality: The Effects Of Advance Organizers On Memory Of An Ambiguous Text., Cathy Orman Castille

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thematically ambiguous written text was presented to 269 subjects in an examination of the role of cognition in sexuality. Information in the form of a title and a descriptive sentence (advance organizer information) was varied according to experimental condition, and this information reflected either a sexual or a non-sexual theme. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of 9 experimental groups, which varied in the amount and type of advance information given prior to the story. After reading the story and performing an intervening task, subjects completed two memory tasks. Both recall and recognition memory tasks were utilized to determine the …

Characterization Of Alkylation Repair And Comparison To Other Stress-Inducible Phenomenon In Drosophila., Sami Noshir Guzder Jan 1989

Characterization Of Alkylation Repair And Comparison To Other Stress-Inducible Phenomenon In Drosophila., Sami Noshir Guzder

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Drosophila melanogaster employs methyltransferase protein(s) to repair lesions in alkylated DNA in vitro (Green and Deutsch, 1983). This investigation deals with the characterization of the methyltransferase protein(s), and their inducibility in the organism upon exposure to alkylating agents. Ammonium sulfate fractionation of crude extracts from pupae resulted in the enrichment (approximately 15-fold in both the 50% and 30% ammonium sulfate supernatants) of the methyltransferase activity(s). Proteins with molecular weights of 30 Kd and 19 Kd were evident by SDS-PAGE analysis of crude extracts; the 30 Kd and 19 Kd could be separated in the 50% ammonium sulfate supernatant and 30% …

Islam And Political Development: The Tunisian Experience., Najoua Kefi Handal Jan 1989

Islam And Political Development: The Tunisian Experience., Najoua Kefi Handal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contrary to many theories attempting to explain "political development" in the contemporary world, the recent experience of the Middle East indicates that religious values, principles, and institutions have to be taken into account in any adequate understanding of political processes in developing nations. This dissertation is an attempt to identify and analyze in detail the specific contribution of the Islamic religious tradition in the political development of Sunni Tunisia in comparison and contrast to three selected case studies: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. These four nation-states were chosen for examination because they provide evidence illustrating patterns or "models" of mosque-state …

Using Expert Systems In Maintenance Monitoring And Management., Tahoomars Rastin Jan 1989

Using Expert Systems In Maintenance Monitoring And Management., Tahoomars Rastin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this research, a model for fault diagnosis of equipment is discussed. The model discusses the use of multi-variable monitoring for a more precise means of equipment malfunction trouble shooting. Also within this model means are discussed for automatically generating work-orders. Equipments are divided into subsystems. The subsystems are broken down into sub-subgroups and further down to individual parts. Preventive maintenance techniques, along with expert system technology, are used to develope the maintenance expert system (MES). Statistical pattern recognition techniques are used as a way to describe the relationship between categories of equipment. The relationships shown here are mostly that …

Sources Of Inoculum, Factors Affecting Spatio-Temporal Spread, And Yield Loss Caused By Puccinia Recondita F. Sp. Tritici On Wheat., Krishnamurthy Venkata Subbarao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Kramer-Collins 7-day spore samplers were operated continuously at two locations, Baton Rouge and Bossier City, during 1986 and 1987, and daily urediniospore counts were taken. Number and viability of spores trapped was maximum during the active epidemic period and viability was significantly inversely correlated with ambient maximum temperature. Leaf rust appeared in numerous microplots of McNair 1003 during summer. Rusts from Hordeum pusillum Nutt. and Lolium multiflorum Lam. failed to infect wheat. Surveys during mid-December in Baton Rouge and Alexandria, showed uniform leaf rust distribution over a large area and the possibility of a major exodemic source of leaf rust …
