The Relation Between Categorization And Recognition In Ill-Defined Categories., Jeung-Ryeul Cho Jan 1991

The Relation Between Categorization And Recognition In Ill-Defined Categories., Jeung-Ryeul Cho

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the relation between recognition and categorization and examined learning processes associated with categorization of ill-defined concepts. Three experiments were conducted, in which recognition and categorization data were simultaneously collected (Estes, 1986b). Stimuli were bar charts and letter strings that simulated symptom patterns. Category structures were defined by independent features in Experiment 1 and correlated features in Experiments 2 and 3. Three different models of categorization, exemplar models, rule models, and dual process models, were contrasted in predicting recognition and categorization performances and the learning processes used to categorize. Across the three experiments, recognition and categorization were often …

Structural And Functional Studies Of Carbohydrates., Shirish Trymbak Dhume Jan 1991

Structural And Functional Studies Of Carbohydrates., Shirish Trymbak Dhume

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Plasmodium falciparum is the parasite responsible for a major loss of human life due to malaria. The biochemistry of invasion of the parasite into human red cells is the subject of much study and controversy. The receptor mediated endocytosis of the parasite into the red cells is postulated to involve at least two major receptors on the cells. Earlier work focussed on glycophorin of red cells as a likely receptor. The present study focussed on the role of erythroglycan, the N-linked carbohydrate chain of band 3 of human red cells in the invasion process. Erythroglycan showed high levels of inhibition …

Comparative Evaluation Of Exact Extreme Value Stochastic Flood Model For Mixed Populations., Senarath T. B Ekanayake Jan 1991

Comparative Evaluation Of Exact Extreme Value Stochastic Flood Model For Mixed Populations., Senarath T. B Ekanayake

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two alternative formulations of the exact extreme value stochastic flood model are presented in explaining the behaviour of observed flood series resulting from mixed climatological processes. As a marginal distribution for flood exceedances, a more flexible Weibull distribution is introduced in the place of the traditional exponential distribution. The asymptotic predictive performances of both the exponential and Weibull model formulations are evaluated in terms of relative bias (BIAS) and relative root mean square error (RMSE) of quantile estimation. The model with Weibull marginal performs well over the exponential for population conditions shown to exist in most of the observed flood …

Low-Pressure Phase Equilibria Of Heavy Aromatic Compounds., Ajay Gupta Jan 1991

Low-Pressure Phase Equilibria Of Heavy Aromatic Compounds., Ajay Gupta

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phase equilibrium diagrams for systems containing compounds found in coal liquids and heavy crude oil are useful in designing separation processes and also in testing and developing of thermodynamic models. Solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) data are easy to obtain compared with vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for systems that are solid near room temperature, because the solids melt to liquids and have relatively high boiling points. It may be possible to extrapolate activity coefficients derived from SLE data to higher temperatures and thus predict vapor-liquid equilibrium. This dissertation presents new SLE and VLE data for compounds related to coal liquids. The problem …

Family Support For Persisters And Non-Persisters In Louisiana's Adult Basic Education Programs., Geraldine Hargrove Holmes Jan 1991

Family Support For Persisters And Non-Persisters In Louisiana's Adult Basic Education Programs., Geraldine Hargrove Holmes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The role that family involvement and the effects of home efforts have on improved student achievement for children is well documented in the literature. The purpose of this study was to determine whether family support should be considered when planning adult basic education (ABE) programs. The objectives addressed were: demographic characteristics, level of family support, and relationship of family support among selected variables. A statewide random sample of 197 adult basic education students was surveyed (82.7% response rate). Persisters (students who either completed the ABE program or were continuing their instruction when the study was conducted) and non-persisters (students who …

An Analysis Of Syntactic Skills Used In Translating Natural Language Sentences Into Algebraic Equations., Elizabeth Devalcourt Gray Jan 1991

An Analysis Of Syntactic Skills Used In Translating Natural Language Sentences Into Algebraic Equations., Elizabeth Devalcourt Gray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine how a competent person translates a natural language sentence into an algebraic equation. A current theory of how translation occurs is espoused by a group of cognitive scientists who propose that the competent translator uses only conceptual strategies in the translation process. I propose and investigate an alternate theory that the translation skills of a competent student are based on a syntactic analysis and syntactic manipulation of the sentence. In most cases such direct, syntactic translation processes will suffice, but for a small minority of sentence types a decision must be made …

Coupling Of Electronic And Nuclear Degrees Of Freedom In Diatomic Molecules: A Quantum Defect Study., Hong Gao Jan 1991

Coupling Of Electronic And Nuclear Degrees Of Freedom In Diatomic Molecules: A Quantum Defect Study., Hong Gao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in electron scattering from a homonuclear diatomic molecule has been studied using the frame transformation method in conjunction with the multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT). Exploration of non-adiabatic effects resulting from large electron-molecule distances, resonances, and dissociation shows that the interconversion of energy between electronic and nuclear motion takes place mainly in the vicinity of the molecular target where the outermost electron couples strongly to the nuclei. MQDT enables us to describe these effects based on a body-frame quantum defect function, which can be obtained either from a short-range ab initio …

Specific Cell Adhesion And Its Application In Mixed Culture Fermentations., Yeou-Fu Hwang Jan 1991

Specific Cell Adhesion And Its Application In Mixed Culture Fermentations., Yeou-Fu Hwang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cell adhesion mediated by bonds between receptors in the cell membrane and ligands on a solid support is referred to as specific cell adhesion. This work focused on the application of specific cell adhesion in control of mixed culture fermentations and on the development of solution methods of mathematical models for cell adhesion. Through various experimental techniques, a model two-strain mixed culture system was obtained. This system was used to explore the possibility of mixed culture control through selective adhesion of particular subpopulations. It was found that through a proper reactor design and operating procedure, the coexistence of the mixed …

Genotype X Environment Interaction For Growth And Reproductive Traits In Beef Cattle., Louis Munyakazi Jan 1991

Genotype X Environment Interaction For Growth And Reproductive Traits In Beef Cattle., Louis Munyakazi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data on eight different two breed combinations of calves produced in two locations (Louisiana and Nebraska) were analyzed to determine the magnitude of genotype x location interactions for gestation length (GESTLEN), birth weight (BWT), pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG) and weaning weight (WWT). Sire breed (SB), sire/SB and cow breed (CB) interactions with location (LOC) were the primary sources of variation of interest in the analysis of variance. The SB x LOC interaction was significant for all traits whereas the CB x LOC interaction was important only for ADG. The sire/SB x LOC interaction accounted for a significant amount of …

Organic Matter Variation Within Depositional Sequences: Stratigraphic Significance And Implication To Petroleum Source Rock Prediction., Mark Alan Pasley Jan 1991

Organic Matter Variation Within Depositional Sequences: Stratigraphic Significance And Implication To Petroleum Source Rock Prediction., Mark Alan Pasley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Study of Eocene-Oligocene sediments in Alabama and Upper Cretaceous strata in New Mexico shows that organic facies deposited on the shelf change noticeably at surfaces associated with transgression of the shoreline. Organic matter in sediments below transgressive surfaces is dominated by well preserved terrestrial organic matter (phytoclasts) whereas sediments deposited on the shelf during transgression contain sparse, highly degraded phytoclasts. Shelf deposits associated with transgressions generally contain more hydrogen-rich organic matter than those deposited during regression. Sediments associated with starvation surfaces contain abundant amorphous nonstructured protistoclasts and rare, highly degraded phytoclasts. Well preserved phytoclasts increase in abundance in sediments overlying …

Biological Treatment Of Hazardous Waste Sludges In Suspended Growth Systems For Removal Of Benzo(A)Pyrene And Other Polynuclear Aromatics., Robert E. Marks Jan 1991

Biological Treatment Of Hazardous Waste Sludges In Suspended Growth Systems For Removal Of Benzo(A)Pyrene And Other Polynuclear Aromatics., Robert E. Marks

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The scope of this research project was to develop a bioremediation process for accelerated oxidation of bioresistant hazardous waste sludges in continuous flow sludge reactors. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) was selected as the target compound due its strong bioresistance, highly carcinogenic nature, extremely low aqueous solubility, and extremely low allowable release limits for land disposal. BaP is often a major hazardous organic component in many hazardous waste impoundments when source wastes have originated from either petroleum refining or associated petrochemical facilities. There is evidence that the biodegradation rate of high molecular weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA's) is the rate limiting step in …

Modeling The Effect Of Shale Heterogeneities On Hazardous Waste Transport In Deep Well Disposal Systems., Seung-Whee Rhee Jan 1991

Modeling The Effect Of Shale Heterogeneities On Hazardous Waste Transport In Deep Well Disposal Systems., Seung-Whee Rhee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The transport of hazardous wastes in heterogeneous confining layers was evaluated using numerical simulations. The expected configuration of the confining layers was defined by Monte Carlo techniques assuming a binary random structure composed of pure sand and pure shale zones. Flow and solute transport in the generated configuration was determined via a finite element model. The effective permeability under saturated steady-state flow was dominated by shale permeability for higher shale fractions ($>$0.65) and by sand permeability for lower shale fraction ($<$0.4). The results agreed well with the numerical result of Desbarats (1987) and the analytical results of Dagan (1979). The effective vertical permeabilities were found to be dependent on shale size and anisotropy. Application of the techniques to a well in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana suggested that a mean advective penetration into confining layer using the injection pressure as an upper bound to the driving pressure was only 3m over 10,000 years. Transport calculations assuming a constant pressure driving force over 10,000 years suggested solute transport was controlled by hydrodynamic dispersion (dispersion + diffusion) rather than advection for higher shale fractions. Transport calculations assuming active injection for only the first 100 years suggested solute transport was controlled by diffusion for higher shale fraction. Buoyancy effects associated with salinity and temperature variations were negligible for solute transport through confining layers with a shale permeability less than 0.01 md. The results of solute transport of hazardous wastes in heterogeneous confining layers suggested that confining layers greater than 300 ft in thickness with shale fractions of greater than 0.65 and shale permeabilities of less than 0.01 md would be expected to contain injected wastes for 10,000 years.

In Vitro Culture Of Bovine Uterine And Oviduct Epithelial Cells., John Kevin Thibodeaux Jan 1991

In Vitro Culture Of Bovine Uterine And Oviduct Epithelial Cells., John Kevin Thibodeaux

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A reliable procedure was developed to harvest purified populations of bovine uterine epithelial cells from the luminal endometrium that allowed cells to be maintained in vitro for multiple subpassages. This method allowed adequate numbers of cells for in vitro culture studies to evaluate uterine secretion rates, uterine-embryo interactions and a new embryo co-culture system. In a second study, cells were isolated from the uterus and oviducts collected from cattle on day of estrus, on d 4 to 6, d 8 to 10 and d 14 to 16 of the cycle to monitor growth and development following incubation in vitro. The …

Questioning Authorship In Twentieth Century Literary Autobiography., Donna Marie Perreault Jan 1991

Questioning Authorship In Twentieth Century Literary Autobiography., Donna Marie Perreault

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation, "Questioning Authorship in Twentieth-Century Literary Autobiography," provides readings of narrative autobiographies by some of this century's most prominent and rebellious professional writers. Individual chapters interpret the autobiographies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Richard Wright, Gertrude Stein, Simone de Beauvoir, and Zora Neale Hurston. The autobiographies that I read variously represent the transformation of a writer into an author and collectively problematize the personal and literary authorizations effecting this transformation. I examine how these narratives put into question both processes of authorization and the cultural contexts in which they occur, contexts which, diverse though they are, all valorize and regulate …

Problem Behaviors Associated With Sociometric Status In An Adolescent Population., Glenda C. Thorne Jan 1991

Problem Behaviors Associated With Sociometric Status In An Adolescent Population., Glenda C. Thorne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the usefulness of the classification system developed by Coie and his colleagues (1982) with an adolescent population by examining the relationship between sociometric status and psychopathology. Five hundred thirty-one seventh- through ninth-grade students participated in the study. Following the Coie et al. (1982) procedure, children were identified as either popular, rejected, neglected, controversial, or average. The basis for status group membership was scores adolescents received on positive and negative peer nominations. Four social status variables were derived from these measures: (a) liked most peer nomination scores, (b) liked least peer nomination …

Quantal Description Of Atomic Diamagnetism: The Quasi-Landau Resonances., Qiaoling Wang Jan 1991

Quantal Description Of Atomic Diamagnetism: The Quasi-Landau Resonances., Qiaoling Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We describe atomic hydrogen diamagnetism within the framework of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Our theoretical studies have used three descriptions: an adiabatic description, a multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) description using an ab initio R-matrix approach, and a model description. The analysis has conclusively demonstrated that the diamagnetic spectrum can be viewed as a perturbed Rydberg spectrum. The adiabatic analysis provides a crude but useful picture to see the overall channel structure and the nature of the perturbing configurations, where the quasi-Landau resonances are the lowest states in each Landau channel which will perturb high Rydberg states in lower Landau channels …

Factors Responsible For The Differential Growth Of Brucella Abortus In Bovine Trophoblasts., Luis Ernesto Samartino Jan 1991

Factors Responsible For The Differential Growth Of Brucella Abortus In Bovine Trophoblasts., Luis Ernesto Samartino

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The interactions of bovine chorionic membrane explants (CAMs) as well as three different bovine trophoblastic cell lines with Brucella abortus were evaluated. The ability of B. abortus to infect and grow within the cells of these CAMs and within these cell lines was measured. In addition, prostanoid and hormone production by the trophoblastic cells after infection with B. abortus was measured. Internalization of B. abortus within the cells of CAMs derived from placentas from both 3-month-gravid cows and 7-month-gravid cows was similar. By 24 hours post-inoculation B. abortus replication in 7-months-derived CAMs was significantly greater than the replication occurring in …

Forged Ties: The 'Comitatus' And Anglo -Saxon Poetry., Leslie Ann Stratyner Jan 1991

Forged Ties: The 'Comitatus' And Anglo -Saxon Poetry., Leslie Ann Stratyner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this study is the illumination of the most unchanging and consistent aspect of Anglo-Saxon poetry: the poetic representation of the ethos of the warrior band. The ideals of the comitatus offer a contributing, if not controlling, structure to nearly the entire corpus of Anglo-Saxon poetry. That warband could attain no finer poetic representation than Beowulf and "The Battle of Maldon," which, in presenting not only positive but negative models of behavior, best exemplify the ideals of the comitatus as embodied in Anglo-Saxon verse. Chapter 1 examines the institutions and practices of that masculine circle as illustrated in …

A Reading Of "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" And "A Curtain Of Green": The Influence Of Parable On Flannery O'Connor And Eudora Welty., Allison Carol Chestnut Jan 1991

A Reading Of "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" And "A Curtain Of Green": The Influence Of Parable On Flannery O'Connor And Eudora Welty., Allison Carol Chestnut

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor and A Curtain of Green by Eudora Welty are short story cycles harmonized by their marked imitation of the style and structure of parable. O'Connor added stories after initially sending the collection to the publisher and then rearranged them accordingly; her work represents a completed cycle. Welty's collection, published in an order different from their individual publications and their original placement in an early typescript, is an arranged cycle. Moreover, parabolic style and structure unify each cycle. A parable typically is a brief story told in the past tense, usually …

Effects Of Chronic Administration Of Phenylbutazone On Reproduction In The Mare., Mareth Ellsworth Jan 1991

Effects Of Chronic Administration Of Phenylbutazone On Reproduction In The Mare., Mareth Ellsworth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandins are associated with crucial aspects of reproduction. In 5 experiments, mares were used to test the effects of phenylbutazone on reproduction. In all experiments, treatment was 2 g phenylbutazone or 10 ml physiological saline intravenously(control). In Experiment I, 9 mares were phenylbutazone-treated for 180 consecutive days and teased. Ovaries were palpated and cyclicity was verified by circulating progesterone concentrations. Thirty-six cycles were evaluated. Mares were then divided into treatment and control groups. Estrous mares were artificially inseminated. Non-surgical embryo collection was performed 7 to 8 days post-ovulation. …

Perceptions Of Performance Appraisal By Cooperative Extension Service Agents In Selected Southern States., William L. Davis Jan 1991

Perceptions Of Performance Appraisal By Cooperative Extension Service Agents In Selected Southern States., William L. Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Appraising the performance of employees is a necessary and vital process in the management of organizations. In the Cooperative Extension System, performance appraisal concerns all employees and influences work, motivation, and ultimately educational program impacts. Perceptions of the present and ideal performance appraisal process were obtained from 558 county agents in six selected southern states. The study focused on agent perceptions of the process, as currently followed and as a desired ideal, to see if there were perceptual differences, and to see if perceptions were influenced by personal characteristics, work characteristics and features of the process itself. The performance appraisal …

Taxonomy And Biostratigraphy Of Sabinian Palynomorphs From The Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene Epochs) Of Southwestern Louisiana., William Andrew Gregory Jr Jan 1991

Taxonomy And Biostratigraphy Of Sabinian Palynomorphs From The Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene Epochs) Of Southwestern Louisiana., William Andrew Gregory Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fifty conventional core samples from the Ragley Lumber #D1 well located in Allen Parish Louisiana (Sec 29, T5S, R7w) were analyzed for palynomorphs. The sediment was deposited during the Sabinian Provincial Stage (upper Paleocene-lower Eocene) in a marine environment as evidenced by the presence of in situ dinocysts and acritarchs in every sample. Terrigenous diversity of 129 taxa is comparable with marine palynomorph diversity of 46 taxa. Single sample diversity among the terrigenous palynomorph component (23-56 taxa) is comparable with single sample marine palynomorph diversity of 7-25 taxa. High terrigenous diversity intervals possibly indicate sourcing from multiple onshore environments or …

On Bubble Columns. (Volumes I And Ii)., Nicholas William Geary Jan 1991

On Bubble Columns. (Volumes I And Ii)., Nicholas William Geary

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There exists a narrow operating window in bubble columns where the motion is so gentle that the normally dominating forces of coalescence and breakup no longer define column conditions. This behavior is synonymous with operation in the bubbly flow regime. During experimentation, two distinct hydrodynamic regions were observed; close to the sparger, the liquid was well mixed, whilst in the remainder of the column a dispersive flow model was determined to be appropriate. In the entrance zone, the isotropic turbulence theories of Kolmogoroff adequately represented transport behavior. This finding implies that a churn-turbulent environment, wherein bubbles are continuously reformed, will …

A Comparison Of Models Of Parole Outcome., Larry Allen Gould Jan 1991

A Comparison Of Models Of Parole Outcome., Larry Allen Gould

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is on the criteria which parole boards use as the basis for their decision to release an offender on to parole. The literature strongly suggests that there are some objective measures of dangerousness on parole, such as the Salient Factor Score; however, the literature also indicates that parole boards use a great deal of subjective evaluation in making their decisions. Many of the subjective concepts used by parole boards can be measured objectively through a grounding in criminological theory. A model of parole outcome prediction which measures objectively several of the previously subjective variables, including …

Radial Flow Chromatography In Compressed Pancake-Shaped Beds., Brian Keith Heft Jan 1991

Radial Flow Chromatography In Compressed Pancake-Shaped Beds., Brian Keith Heft

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The separation of a methane/n-butane mixture was demonstrated using radial flow through compressed, pancake-shaped beds of fine alumina powder. The compacted stationary phase improved performance relative to an uncompressed sorbent by assuring flow uniformity through the bed, reducing band-broadening and tailing (by decreasing interstitial hold-up) and decreasing effective plate height (through an increase in the capacity ratio of the chromatograph). Dispersion was identified as the key dissipative effect in the prototype radial flow adsorber. An exact analytical solution derived for the transport equations describing such a device compared favorably with experimental data. The dispersion coefficients were found to be strong …

Feedback Linearization Of Nonlinear Systems: Robustness And Adaptive Control., Weon Ho Kim Jan 1991

Feedback Linearization Of Nonlinear Systems: Robustness And Adaptive Control., Weon Ho Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Feedback linearization provides an effective means of designing nonlinear control systems. This method permits one to have an exactly equivalent linear system by using a coordinate transformation and state feedback. Once the nonlinear system is transformed to a linear system, one can proceed with well developed control technologies for linear systems. Feedback linearization is based on a model of the real system. If there is mismatch between the model and the real plant, feedback linearization does not yield an exactly linear system. The question of robustness then arises: will a controller based on the model be stable when applied to …

Process And Product In Prereferral Intervention: A Study Of Planning, Integrity, And Outcome., William Treen Mckee Jan 1991

Process And Product In Prereferral Intervention: A Study Of Planning, Integrity, And Outcome., William Treen Mckee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the study was to obtain data on the intervention planning processes engaged in by prereferral intervention teams, primarily, through a focus on the verbal processes of teacher and committee team member interactions. Teacher and committee participation in the prereferral intervention planning process was operationalized in terms of the frequency of teacher and committee verbal interactions, in terms of numbers of questions, responses, and initiated comments made by each, as well as teacher and committee speaking time. Results of analysis of these data revealed that teachers asked few questions and initiated relatively few comments in comparison with their …

Fluorescence Studies Of Phosphofructokinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus., Soon-Jong Kim Jan 1991

Fluorescence Studies Of Phosphofructokinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus., Soon-Jong Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phosphofructokinase catalyzes the phosphorylation of $\beta$-fructose 6-phosphate (Fru-6-P) to $\beta$-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The first part of this dissertation shows that phosphofructokinase from Bacillus stearothermophilus (Bs-PFK) is a tetramer in the region pH 4.5-9.5 unlike the enzymes from mammalian sources, which exhibit association-dissociation reactions. Circular dichroism, steady-state fluorescence, and static and dynamic light scattering were used to study the conformational properties of the enzyme. Inactivation of the enzyme below pH 7.0 is not due to dissociation of the tetramer to dimers or monomers. In the second part, the fluorescence of the lone tryptophan was investigated by steady-state and time-resolved techniques. The decay …

The Effects Of Community Building Group Process Intervention Technique On Reading Performance Among Inmates In A Medium Security Prison., Robert Earl Roberts Jan 1991

The Effects Of Community Building Group Process Intervention Technique On Reading Performance Among Inmates In A Medium Security Prison., Robert Earl Roberts

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A substantial body of research has shown that when students work together in groups and are rewarded based on the learning of all the groups members, they achieve consistently more than students who are in traditionally taught classes. The goal of this project was to test the effects of an innovative group process intervention technique on reading performance among a population of incarcerated adult males in a medium security prison in Louisiana. This model, referred to as "Community Building" (CBGP), has been utilized among other ways as an intervention technique to resolve organizational/personnel problems in private, business, university, and government …

A Study On The Effects Of Additives On Selective Hydrogenation Of Trace Acetylene Over Palladium Catalysts., Yeung Ho Park Jan 1991

A Study On The Effects Of Additives On Selective Hydrogenation Of Trace Acetylene Over Palladium Catalysts., Yeung Ho Park

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of both carbon monoxide (as a gas phase additive) and potassium (as a catalyst additive) on the selective hydrogenation of acetylene over Pd/Al$\sb2$O$\sb3$ was studied by deuterium tracer experiments combined with Kemball's steady-state treatment and temperature programmed reaction (TPR). The TPR of acetylene and ethylene in hydrogen, which was attempted in this study for the first time, enabled the investigation of the behavior of the adsorbed species on Pd. CO addition to the reaction mixture significantly increased the probability of ethylene desorption during ethylene deuteration while minor effects due to CO displacement of hydrogen were observed for acetylene …
