Measurement Of Galactic Cosmic Ray Proton And Helium Spectra During The 1987 Solar Minimum., Eun-Suk Seo Jan 1991

Measurement Of Galactic Cosmic Ray Proton And Helium Spectra During The 1987 Solar Minimum., Eun-Suk Seo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The differential cosmic ray proton and helium spectra have been measured during the 1987 solar minimum using a balloon-borne superconducting magnetic spectrometer launched from Prince Albert, Canada. The changing geomagnetic cutoff along the balloon trajectory was observed in the low energy proton data to be about 25% below the nominal calculated values. The measured particle fluxes were approximately equal to the highest fluxes observed at the previous solar minimum in 1977. Above 10 GV the observed spectra are represented by a power law in rigidity with spectral indices of 2.74 $\pm$ 0.02 for protons and 2.68 $\pm$ 0.03 for helium. …

The Molecular Basis Of Imidazolinone Herbicide Resistance In Arabidopsis Thaliana Var. Columbia., Kanagasabapathi Sathasivan Jan 1991

The Molecular Basis Of Imidazolinone Herbicide Resistance In Arabidopsis Thaliana Var. Columbia., Kanagasabapathi Sathasivan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Acetolactate synthase (ALS) is a key regulatory enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. ALS is inhibited by four classes of structurally unrelated herbicides viz. sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, triazolopyrimidines, and pyrimidyl-oxy-benzoate. To understand the molecular basis of imidazolinone resistance, the ALS gene was isolated from an imazapyr-resistant mutant GH90 of Arabidopsis thaliana (Haughn and Somerville, 1990. Plant Physiol. 92:1081-1085). DNA sequence analysis of the mutant gene demonstrated a single point mutation from G to A at the 1958th nucleotide of the ALS coding sequence (Sathasivan et al., 1990. Nucl. Acids Res. 18:2188). This would result in serine to …

The Effects Of Situational Access To Firearms On Sensitivity To Risk Of Criminal Victimization: A Contextual Analysis., Roberta Loupe St. Pierre Jan 1991

The Effects Of Situational Access To Firearms On Sensitivity To Risk Of Criminal Victimization: A Contextual Analysis., Roberta Loupe St. Pierre

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is on the association of the availability of firearms for protection and fear of crime. More specifically, the study explores the relationship of firearms to persons' sensitivity to perceived risk of criminal victimization. The data used were drawn from a state-wide survey of Louisiana residents conducted in 1984. The research was directed by the long-standing inability of researchers to identify any relationship between guns and fear of crime, although it has long been assumed that such a relationship does exist. This study used the innovative strategy of examining fear of crime levels in their relationship …

A New Condition For Arithmetic Equivalence., Donna Joy Stuart Jan 1991

A New Condition For Arithmetic Equivalence., Donna Joy Stuart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two algebraic number fields K, K$\sp\prime$ are said to be arithmetically equivalent if every prime number p has the same splitting type in K as in K$\sp\prime$. Many equivalent formulations of arithmetic equivalence are known. The best-known of these is: K and K$\sp\prime$ are arithmetically equivalent if and only if their Dedekind zeta functions coincide. This dissertation provides a surprising new formulation: K and K$\sp\prime$ are arithmetically equivalent if and only if for all prime numbers p, outside a given set of density zero, the number $g\sb K (p)$ of prime factors of p in K is equal to the …

Genetics Of Resistance To Preharvest Aflatoxin Accumulation In Maize Containing The Lfy Gene., Daniel Preston Gorman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Preharvest infection of maize (Zea mays L.) grain by Aspergillus flavus Link ex Fries and subsequent aflatoxin contamination is a serious problem, especially in the southeastern USA. Studies on the genetics of resistance to aflatoxin contamination in maize are quite limited, but a better understanding of this aspect is needed for developing resistant germplasm. The objective of the first field study was to determine the genetics of resistance to aflatoxin contamination in maize possessing the leafy (Lfy) gene. Seven Lfy synthetic genotypes were crossed in a diallel fashion, and the resulting 21 single crosses were evaluated for aflatoxin contamination in …

Stereoelectronics Of Carboxylate-Imidazolium Hydrogen Bonds In Models Of The Aspartate-Histidine Couple In Serine Proteases., Nabeel Abdel Raouf Nabulsi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The geometry of the carboxylate-imidazolium hydrogen bond in the crystalline state and the effect of microenvironment are investigated in models of the aspartate-histidine (Asp-His) couple. Synthetic methods leading to the preparation of intramolecular models, possessing syn and anti-oriented hydrogen bonds, also are described. A single-pot procedure has been developed for converting phenoxyacetonitriles into their respective benzimidazole derivative in higher yields than the traditional two step procedure. An efficient single-pot procedure also has been developed for converting benzofuran to its acetylene derivative, 2-acetoxyphenylacetylene. This method involves in situ acetylation of the unstable phenol intermediate. Nine intermolecular imidazolium-benzoate couples have been prepared …

Floral and inflorescence development of 39 species of Asteraceae and four additional species representing possible outgroups were examined with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Taxon choice was designed to include representatives of 12 of the 12 to 18 tribes recognized in the large, morphologically diverse family. Although floral ontogeny has provided phylogenetically useful characters in other plant groups, no similar studies have been applied to solve phylogenetic problems in the Asteraceae. The necessary live material was collected in several ways: from natural populations throughout North America, from the worldwide collections of several botanical gardens, grown from seed, or from cultivated …

J. S. Bach's Chaconne In D Minor: An Examination Of Three Arrangements For Piano Solo., Jeffery Mark Pruett Jan 1991

J. S. Bach's Chaconne In D Minor: An Examination Of Three Arrangements For Piano Solo., Jeffery Mark Pruett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The chaconne from the Second Partita for Solo Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most often arranged compositions in the history of music. In the century following the first publication in 1802 of Bach's six sonatas and partitas for solo violin, the chaconne was performed in arrangements and transcriptions almost as diverse as the composers whom it inspired. From the years 1879 and 1893, respectively, came the most famous arrangements--those by Johannes Brahms and Ferruccio Busoni (both for solo piano). Larry Sitsky, writing of works based on the chaconne apart from those for solo instruments, has referred …

Three Essays On Sampling Techniques: Small Sample Performances Of Estimators And Predictors., Parisun Chantanahom Jan 1991

Three Essays On Sampling Techniques: Small Sample Performances Of Estimators And Predictors., Parisun Chantanahom

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation addresses the issues of small sample properties of estimators and predictors. Economic analysis usually relies on the asymptotic properties of estimators and predictors which may not be the same as their asymptotic counterparts. Furthermore, some biased estimators and predictors used in economic studies have certain asymptotic properties which are not fully understood. Consequently, sampling techniques are used to explore the small sample properties and construct confidence intervals for predictors and estimators. In the dissertation, first, Monte Carlo experiments are used to find an appropriate estimation procedure for a system of simultaneous equations which involves a latent endogenous variable. …

The main purpose of this monograph was to examine the use of supertitles in foreign language opera by American opera companies. Supertitles are the translation of an opera's text projected simultaneously above the stage during an opera performance. The use of supertitles is one of the most controversial issues in the opera world. Although the primary purpose is to enable the audience to understand a foreign text, there is an ongoing controversy over whether supertitles enhance an opera performance or detract from it. Many opera companies are using supertitles, but there are still those who have not made the investment …

Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfones): Synthesis, Modifications And Applications., Marietta Navarro Aniano-Ilao Jan 1991

Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfones): Synthesis, Modifications And Applications., Marietta Navarro Aniano-Ilao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Poly(arylene ether sulfones) were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic polymerization of the monomers; 4,4$\sp\prime$-biphenol, 4-chlorophenyl sulfone, hydroquinone, and tert-butylhydroquinone. Different conditions of temperature and solvent systems were used to determine the best synthetic approaches for the preparation of poly-(4,4$\sp\prime$-biphenol/4-chlorophenyl sulfone) (1:1), poly-(4-4$\sp\prime$-biphenol/4-chlorophenyl sulfone/hydroquinone) (1:2:1), and poly (4-4$\sp\prime$-biphenol/4-chlorophenyl sulfone/tert-butylhydroquinone) (1:2:1). The use of aprotic high boiling solvent mixtures of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (CHP), facilitated the formation of polymers with structures which can easily be controlled by varying the ratio of monomers, and by varying the concentration of reactants. The polymers were functionalized and modified by silylation, amination and aminomethylation. Directed silylation …

The Effect Of Work And Non-Work Influences Upon The Relationships Between Role Stress And Selected Work Outcomes., James Sanders Boles Jan 1991

The Effect Of Work And Non-Work Influences Upon The Relationships Between Role Stress And Selected Work Outcomes., James Sanders Boles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the importance of two constructs--work relationships and job/home conflict--as potential mediators/moderators of the linkage between role conflict and role ambiguity with a variety of work outcomes in a salesforce setting. These outcomes include: sales performance, job satisfaction, emotional burnout, and propensity to leave. Results indicate that the relationships between these outcomes and the role variables are often mediated rather than direct. Implications for both researchers and practitioners are developed as well as a future research agenda.

Dominance, Marginality, And Subversion In French (Post)Colonial Discourse., Suzanne Mary Chester Jan 1991

Dominance, Marginality, And Subversion In French (Post)Colonial Discourse., Suzanne Mary Chester

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines a selection of fictional texts by Marguerite Duras, Andre Gide, Assia Djebar and Tahar ben Jelloun. In my readings of these colonial and post-colonial narratives, I explore the textual strategies which transform marginalized positions based on colonialism, gender, sexual orientation and class into positions of dominance. In Gide and Duras, for example, this is evident in their complicity with dominant ideologies of colonialism. By contrast, the second section of the dissertation focuses on the oppositional strategies in the work of Djebar and ben Jelloun, two post-colonial writers from North Africa. Here, I analyze the ways in which …

The growing number of immigrants from both Taiwan and Mainland China have brought speakers of different Mandarin varieties into contact in an American context. In the Chinese community in Los Angeles, Mainland Putonghua speakers are found to accommodate their language to the local Taiwan Mandarin speakers. Social network analysis, a model oriented toward the individual, is adapted here for analyzing this linguistic situation. The conversation of 35 informants was recorded within a naturally occurring context and their social network scores were compared with their scores for nine linguistic variables selected for this study. It was found that the accommodation process …

A Theoretical Approach Involving Recurrence Resolution, Dependence Cycle Statement Ordering And Subroutine Transformation For The Exploitation Of Parallelism In Sequential Code., Chih-Ping Chu Jan 1991

A Theoretical Approach Involving Recurrence Resolution, Dependence Cycle Statement Ordering And Subroutine Transformation For The Exploitation Of Parallelism In Sequential Code., Chih-Ping Chu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To exploit parallelism in Fortran code, this dissertation consists of a study of the following three issues: (1) recurrence resolution in Do-loops for vector processing, (2) dependence cycle statement ordering in Do-loops for parallel processing, and (3) sub-routine parallelization. For recurrence resolution, the major findings include: (1) the node splitting algorithm cannot be used directly to break an essential antidependence link, of which the source variable that results in antidependence is itself the sink variable of another true dependence so a correction method is proposed, (2) a sink variable renaming technique is capable of breaking an antidependence and/or output-dependence link, …
