Preservice Teachers' Evolving Perspectives Of Elementary Social Studies., Elizabeth K. Wilson Jan 1991

Preservice Teachers' Evolving Perspectives Of Elementary Social Studies., Elizabeth K. Wilson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent studies which have focused on preservice teachers' perspectives of elementary social studies have attempted to discover the product of the relationships between their conceptions of social studies and their classroom practices. This research, conducted only during the clinical experience, indicated that the beliefs and ideas which teachers express about social studies have little effect on classroom practice. In order to better understand this phenomenon, this study investigated the evolution of preservice teachers' perspectives of social studies through methods instruction as well as the clinical experience. The participants for this study were four preservice teachers who were enrolled in the …

Students were also asked to reflect on strategy use in assigned journal entries. Participants were not asked to use textmarking strategies in any other content course in which …

Factors Influencing Training And Human Resource Development Certificate Programs In The United States., Cynthia Huff Gaudet Jan 1991

Factors Influencing Training And Human Resource Development Certificate Programs In The United States., Cynthia Huff Gaudet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objectives of this study were to: describe training and human resource development (T&D/HRD) certificate programs in the United States, compare the demographic characteristics of certificate programs among academic groupings, and to determine the perceived degree of influence of various factors on the development of T&D/HRD certificate programs. A researcher designed questionnaire was administered to the population of U.S. institutions offering T&D/HRD certificate programs identified by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) 1990 Academic Directory. An 84.2% rate of return was received from the respondents in this study. Findings indicated that T&D/HRD certificate programs are more likely to …

Remedial English Ten Years After: Former Basic Writers In The Workplace., Eleanor Agnew Jan 1991

Remedial English Ten Years After: Former Basic Writers In The Workplace., Eleanor Agnew

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to find out whether writing skills were a handicap to job success for former basic writers who had graduated from college. A population of 197 former basic writers (FBW's) and 68 former strong writers (FSW's, used as a comparison) were surveyed and interviewed. Research questions included (1) What types of jobs do FBW's have, compared to FSW's, and how much do their feelings about writing affect their choices of major or job? (2) How much and how often do FBW's write at work compared to FSW's? (3) What forms of writing do FBW's do …

Implicit Vs Explicit Mood Congruent Memory Bias In Depression., Philip Charles Watkins Jan 1991

Implicit Vs Explicit Mood Congruent Memory Bias In Depression., Philip Charles Watkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mood congruent memory (MCM) in depressed individuals, tends to be biased toward memories consistent with their mood, i.e. negative or unpleasant memories. Although MCM is a robust finding, the large majority of studies have used free-recall paradigms, and that methodology does little to delineate the cognitive mechanisms determining MCM. This study was designed to investigate whether MCM bias is a function of implicit or explicit memory. Implicit memory is taken as a measure of the organization or strength of association of the aspects of a memory representation, whereas explicit memory also taps elaboration that may involve control procedures such as …

Dynamic Random Coefficient Regression Model For Electricity Demand: The Small Sample Case., Susan Mu-Lan Zee Jan 1991

Dynamic Random Coefficient Regression Model For Electricity Demand: The Small Sample Case., Susan Mu-Lan Zee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This paper develops a dynamic random coefficient regression model for electricity demand. Six estimation procedures are proposed for the model. An empirical study of the comparative performance of these six estimators is presented. In addition, a Monte Carlo simulation study is reported where we examine the small sample properties of the distributions of the coefficients and observe the behavior of the estimators as the sample size increases.

Cooperation In The Liberalization Of Soviet-Western Trade? A Transaction-Cost Analysis Of Soviet Joint Ventures With The West., Elza Perry Ballard Jan 1991

Cooperation In The Liberalization Of Soviet-Western Trade? A Transaction-Cost Analysis Of Soviet Joint Ventures With The West., Elza Perry Ballard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study employs the method of transaction-cost analysis--the price of doing business between economic and political agents--to the study of Soviet-Western political economy (particularly Soviet joint ventures with the West). Its purpose is to determine: (1) if Soviet foreign economic policy in the Gorbachev era has reduced the transaction costs to Western firms engaging in joint ventures with the Soviet Union when compared to previous Western business options (e.g., co-production, licensing, turn-key projects), and (2) if the reduction is sufficient to encourage joint ventures to become a mechanism of greater cooperation and liberalization in Soviet-Western political economy and the international …

Implied Volatility And Risk Preference From Option Prices., Kenneth Steven Bartunek Jan 1991

Implied Volatility And Risk Preference From Option Prices., Kenneth Steven Bartunek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation consists of two empirical studies on options. In the first study, an estimate of the constant proportional risk aversion parameter is implied from the equivalent martingale measure framework. Within this framework, we use call options as opposed to the traditional consumption data to imply our estimate. We compare forecasts of volatility for the asset underlying an option in the second study. Three methods have been used to forecast volatility in the past. These are an historical estimate, an estimate implied from the Black-Scholes European call option pricing model, and an estimate based on generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity. The …

An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Integration Of Disabled And Nondisabled Two-Year-Old Children., Mary Beth Armstrong Jan 1991

An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Integration Of Disabled And Nondisabled Two-Year-Old Children., Mary Beth Armstrong

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study is an ethnographic investigation of the initial integration of a group of disabled and nondisabled two-year-old children. The group was comprised of a class of seven disabled children from a school parish and a class of nine nondisabled children from a university child development center in this same parish. This study incorporated ethnographic data collection and analysis procedures. Data collection procedures included participant observation, ethnographic interviews, artifactual analysis, and videorecording. The results of this study suggest that a process of stigmatization occurred in this integration program. The process of stigmatization and factors perhaps accounting for the process are …

Self And Power: Political Reconstruction In The Drama Of Christopher Marlowe., Patricia A. Brown Jan 1991

Self And Power: Political Reconstruction In The Drama Of Christopher Marlowe., Patricia A. Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Christopher Marlowe created Renaissance drama as we think of it today. Marlowe's princely protagonists are studied here not as sovereigns responsible for the general well-being of their subjects, but as ambitious characters who use power to control their personal environment. Seen from this viewpoint, the dramatic function of the central characters is either to develop a new stance toward the idea of public authority or to refashion an old one. Instead of attending to governance, they attempt to encompass all existence within themselves: Tamburlaine the world conqueror; Edward and Dido, public rulers whose private relationships transform their public positions; the …

A Blackboard Architecture For The Integration Of Manufacturing Systems., Calvin Michael Collins Jan 1991

Research is now centering on the integration of these systems and the goal is to integrate the accounting, planning and marketing functions of the organization with the automated manufacturing …

Development Of An Advanced Thermospray Interfaced Hplc-Aas System For Speciation Studies Of Cadmium Species Excreted From Human Body Fluids: Interaction Between Metallothionein Cadmium And Zinc., Peter Ping Chang Jan 1991

Development Of An Advanced Thermospray Interfaced Hplc-Aas System For Speciation Studies Of Cadmium Species Excreted From Human Body Fluids: Interaction Between Metallothionein Cadmium And Zinc., Peter Ping Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new technique has been developed to reveal different metal species at very low concentrations (lower ppb level) in human body fluids. Using this technique it was determined that urine contained many different species of cadmium and that perspiration contained many other species of cadmium. This indicated that there were two avenues for the elimination of cadmium from the body. Quantitative data showed that much more cadmium was eliminated through perspiration than urine and that the biological half life of cadmium in the body was less than 1.5 years--not 20-30 years as currently believed. Further, in vitro experiments showed that …

Prediction Of Sugarcane Cross Potential At Early Selection Stages., Yih-Shiow Chang Jan 1991

Prediction Of Sugarcane Cross Potential At Early Selection Stages., Yih-Shiow Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary goal of this study was to develop a faster sugarcane cross appraisal method. The effect of intrarow plant spacing on trait variability was also investigated. The study evaluated 1800 progeny from 15 crosses among 23 parents at two intrarow plant spacings in 1989 and 1990. Data were collected on plant cane (PC) and first ratoon (FR) single stool seedlings, and first clonal (FC) plots. The family mean, the normal probability of an elite proportion (PROB), the observed elite proportion, and the best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) were estimated for each trait. The calculated statistics were strongly correlated within …

A Multivariate Analysis Of Voter Turnout In Louisiana Contested Nonpartisan Judicial Elections, 1981-1988., Olethia Davis Jan 1991

A Multivariate Analysis Of Voter Turnout In Louisiana Contested Nonpartisan Judicial Elections, 1981-1988., Olethia Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation is to determine what factors account for variations in voter turnout in Louisiana contested nonpartisan trial and intermediate appellate court elections. The central questions to be addressed are: (1) what is the precise relationship between incumbency or prior judicial experience, campaign spending, and the race of judicial candidates, ceteris paribus (with all else remaining the same), on electoral participation in judicial elections in the State of Louisiana from 1981 to 1988 and (2) is the electorate that participates in judicial elections typical or atypical of the electorate that participates in presidential general races in terms …

A Syntactic Language Computer Analysis Of Depressed Versus Non-Depressed Females., Daniel Merton Christy Jan 1991

A Syntactic Language Computer Analysis Of Depressed Versus Non-Depressed Females., Daniel Merton Christy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to examine the interrelationship of cognition and language in the clinical syndrome of depression. It was proposed that the types of cognitive differences in depression proposed by Beck and other cognitive theorists would be reflected in language usage, and especially in syntax. Using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), subjects were classified as either depressed (BDI $\geq$ 16) or non-depressed (BDI $\leq$ 4). Subjects were asked to speak into a tape recorder for 3-5 minutes on each of three stimuli, a positive event, a negative event, and a neutral opinion stimulus. The language samples were then analyzed using …

A Neural Network Truth Maintenance System., Suresh Guddanti Jan 1991

A Neural Network Truth Maintenance System., Suresh Guddanti

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A novel approach using Neural Networks has been developed to generate consistent labelling of facts in relation to a given set of rules. In the proposed system, facts are represented by neurons and their interconnections form the knowledge base. The Neural Network Truth Maintenance System(TMS) arrives at a valid solution provided the solution exists. A valid solution is a consistent labelling of facts. If a valid solution does not exist the network does not converge. An experimental setup was built and tested using conventional integrated circuits. The hardware design is suitable for VLSI implementation for large, real-time problems. The TMS …

The Introduction Into Tobacco Plants Of Genes Which Encode Some Of The Natural Components Of The Humoral Immune Response Of Hyalophora Cecropia., Luis Julio Cesar Destefano Beltran Jan 1991

The Introduction Into Tobacco Plants Of Genes Which Encode Some Of The Natural Components Of The Humoral Immune Response Of Hyalophora Cecropia., Luis Julio Cesar Destefano Beltran

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A number of plant pathogenic bacteria has been shown to be highly sensitive to SB-37, a derivative of cecropin B (one of the three cecropins from the giant silk moth Hyalophora cecropia). The lytic activity exhibited by SB-37 has been shown to increase up to twenty-fold in the presence of chicken egg white lysozyme. The cDNAs genes encoding SB-37, attacin E (another component of the humoral response of Hyalophora cecropia), and chicken lysozyme have been introduced into tobacco (var Xanthi) and potato (a new cultivar 86007) plants by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using co-integrate and binary vectors. The genes were placed under …

School Administration As Brinkmanship., Eddy A. Haynes Jan 1991

School Administration As Brinkmanship., Eddy A. Haynes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Students, teachers, and principals sometimes test the boundaries set by the system in which they work, often with the goal of adapting to their circumstances while avoiding punishment. This type of behavior, called brinkmanship, was defined by Licata and Willower (1975) in terms of subordinate challenges to an educational organization's authority system that avoid negative sanctions. Principal brinkmanship can also be defined in terms of discretionary decision making (Morris, et al. 1984) which is the implementation of policies and programs at the school level in a way that fits the principal's values, philosophy, and goals. This research focused on school …

The College Participation Of The 1982 Undergraduate Cohort In Louisiana Public Higher Education: A Longitudinal Analysis., Margaret Blanchard Hargroder Jan 1991

The College Participation Of The 1982 Undergraduate Cohort In Louisiana Public Higher Education: A Longitudinal Analysis., Margaret Blanchard Hargroder

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the six-year college participation of students entering Louisiana public undergraduate higher education in Fall 1982. Motivation for the study stemmed from several educational conditions in Louisiana: a lower graduation rate than that of the nation, disparities in the graduation rates of Black students and White students, and administrative considerations for the restructuring of public higher education. The purposes of the study were: (1) to describe the population by selected characteristics and (2) to identify participation differences in enrollment, persistence, and achievement among sub-groups classified by: (a) race and gender, (b) developmental program participation, and (c) institutional types …

Supervisor Characteristics Affecting Subordinates' Perceptions And Reactions To The Performance Appraisal Interview., Jeffrey Staron Rain Jan 1991

Supervisor Characteristics Affecting Subordinates' Perceptions And Reactions To The Performance Appraisal Interview., Jeffrey Staron Rain

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Supervisor inputs (preparation, appraisal-related knowledge, and attitudes toward the appraisal system) into the performance appraisal interview were examined, using a questionnaire, for relationships to subordinate perceptions of the supervisor's appraisal interview actions (developmental and administrative). Subordinate reaction to the appraisal interview was also assessed. Eighty-nine subordinate/supervisor pairs were randomly assigned to one of three experimental preparation conditions (Example, Improve, Control). All subjects then completed the questionnaires. The results of the experimental component indicated that supervisors who generated specific performance weakness and strength examples (Improve condition) were perceived by subordinates as engaging in significantly greater developmental behaviors than in the Control …

Effective School Status: A Methodological Study Of Classification Consistency., Michael Hansen Lang Jan 1991

Effective School Status: A Methodological Study Of Classification Consistency., Michael Hansen Lang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated both the effect of alternating criterion-referenced tests (CRT) with norm-referenced tests (NRT) in evaluating schools and whether mean scores were masking poor delivery of educational services to low achievers in such evaluations. The sample included 242 Louisiana public elementary schools (18,000 third graders tested in 1989). The study employed ten separate multiple regression models, each producing studentized residuals used as school effectiveness indicators (SEIs). The independent variables for all models were student's free lunch status, mother's educational level, and father's employment level. The dependent variables were school mean and lower quartile scores for CRT language arts and …

On The Construction And Application Of Certain Special Polarizations In Nilpotent Lie Algebras., James Donald Moss Jr Jan 1991

On The Construction And Application Of Certain Special Polarizations In Nilpotent Lie Algebras., James Donald Moss Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation arose from efforts to prove the following conjecture, which generalizes to nilpotent Lie groups a weak form of the classical Paley-Wiener theorem for $\IR\sp{n}$: Let N be any connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group with unitary dual N, and let $\varphi\in L\sbsp{c}{\infty}(N)$. Suppose that there exists a subset E $\subset$ N of positive Plancherel measure such that $\\varphi(\pi)$ = 0 for all $\pi\in$ E, where $\\varphi(\pi)$ is the operator-valued Fourier transform of $\varphi$. Then $\varphi$ = 0 almost everywhere on N. The writer has been able to prove a slightly weakened form of the conjecture for a large …

Characterization Of Double-Stranded Rna And Fungal Virus From Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora., Yong-Hwan Lee Jan 1991

Characterization Of Double-Stranded Rna And Fungal Virus From Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora., Yong-Hwan Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fifty-two isolates of Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora originating from eight different states of the United States were collected and grown on potato dextrose broth for 2-3 wk. Double-stranded RNA was extracted by two cycles of cellulose (CF-11) chromatography and electrophoresed on 6% polyacrylamide gel. Among all isolates tested, 28 (54%) contained at least one molecule of dsRNA. Molecular sizes of dsRNA ranged from 0.4 to 4.5 Kb, and seven different sizes of dsRNA were detected. The 4.5 Kb dsRNA did not have sequence homology with smaller dsRNAs (2.1, 1.8, and 1.4 Kb), suggesting that the smaller dsRNAs are not deletion …

Faulkner, Truth, And The Artist's Directive: A Reading Of "A Fable"., Bobby Lynn Matthews Jan 1991

Faulkner, Truth, And The Artist's Directive: A Reading Of "A Fable"., Bobby Lynn Matthews

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The old general in A Fable embodies the resolution of questions about the relation of art and life that Faulkner evoked in his invention of Quentin Compson in The Sound and the Fury and pursued in a series of subsequent characterizations. This artist-figure motif discloses Faulkner's implication of the relation in the modern crisis of faith. Faulkner images in narrative fiction what Nietzsche asserts in discourse, namely, the need for a reversal of the Platonic valuation of eternal "truth" (ideality) over art. The characterization of Quentin shows the potentially terrible consequences of man's propensity for mythopoeic invention, as Quentin's unconscious …

Writing And Modernity: Colette's Feminist Fiction., Lezlie Hart Stivale Jan 1991

Writing And Modernity: Colette's Feminist Fiction., Lezlie Hart Stivale

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My choice of Colette's fiction as the subject of critical analysis is one occasioned not only by the richness of her literary corpus, but also by the marginalization of Colette's work as "natural" or "feminine" within the French literary canon. While much has been written on Colette, consideration of her personal life has overly influenced the critical evaluation of her works. I break with the prevalent biographical trend in Colette criticism by approaching seven of her novels from feminist perspectives informed by deconstruction, narratology and psychoanalysis. These productive readings reveal multiple destabilizing effects. A close reading of Cheri locates sites …

Studies In Fructofuranose Chemistry., Ronald Joseph Voll Jan 1991

Studies In Fructofuranose Chemistry., Ronald Joseph Voll

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The glycolytic pathway enzyme phosphofructokinase (E.C. 2.7.1.11) has as its substrate and activator two different carbohydrate phosphate esters. Both are derivatives of D-fructose in the furanose ring form. This dissertation is divided into two chapters: the first deals with the conformational specificity of the active site and the second the structure of the activator. The compound 2,5-anhydro-3,4-O-(1,2-ethanediyl)-D-mannitol was designed to test the active site. The synthesis utilized a phase-transfer cyclo-dialkylation of a vicinal diol to yield a trans-fused 2,5,8-trioxabicyclo (4.3.0) nonane system. The final product was shown to exist in a locked conformation in solution by temperature dependent n.m.r. experiments …

Metabolic Pathways Associated With Glycogen Storage In Chronically Active And Normal Skeletal Muscle., Robert James Talmadge Jan 1991

Metabolic Pathways Associated With Glycogen Storage In Chronically Active And Normal Skeletal Muscle., Robert James Talmadge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To determine the pathways used for glycogen synthesis in chronically active and normal muscle, muscles from C57B1/6J dy$\sp{\rm 2J}/$dy$\sp{\rm 2J}$(dy$\sp{\rm 2J}$) mice were evaluated biochemically and histochemically. The gastrocnemius muscle (GAST) of the dy$\sp{\rm 2J}$ mouse, a chronically active muscle, contained twice as much glycogen and lactate as control GAST. The dy$\sp{\rm 2J}$ triceps muscle (TRI), which is not chronically active, showed no elevation in glycogen content. An intraperitoneal injection of $\sp{14}$C-lactate resulted in increased incorporation of $\sp{14}$C into glycogen by dy$\sp{\rm 2J}$ compared to control GAST. Both normal and dy$\sp{\rm 2J}$ GAST incorporated $\sp{14}$C into glycogen in an in …

Patterning The Past: History As Ideology In Modern Southern Fiction., Deborah Wilson Jan 1991

Patterning The Past: History As Ideology In Modern Southern Fiction., Deborah Wilson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study, I analyze the modes of historical representation in works by Robert Penn Warren, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty and Ellen Douglas. In the chapter on All the King's Men, a novel that exemplifies the masculine historical perspective of traditional Southern literature, I show how Warren defines history as a process moving toward a predetermined end and then structures the narrative so that the women characters are constantly positioned outside that definition. In the second chapter, I begin with Eudora Welty's The Robber Bridegroom, examining the ways she alters the traditional story line of American history by drawing attention …

The Immunoepidemiology Of Lung Cancer And Smoking: Lymphocyte Subsets., Joan Peters Blackmon Jan 1991

The Immunoepidemiology Of Lung Cancer And Smoking: Lymphocyte Subsets., Joan Peters Blackmon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relative proportions of lymphocyte subsets in the peripheral blood constitute a measure of immune status. Results of research to establish whether or not individuals with lung cancer differ in their lymphocyte composition have conflicted due to failure to control for factors other than cancer that affect lymphocyte balance. This study was designed to quantitatively estimate the effects of variables such as disease (lung cancer), smoking, age, circadian and circannual rhythms, and dietary factors on lymphocyte subsets. Questionnaires were given to 64 white males with primary lung cancer and 219 cancer-free white males and a blood sample was obtained. Lymphocytes …

The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett Jan 1991

The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three children's responses to three research-composed narratives were investigated. Participants were eight-year-old girls from the lower S.E.S., African-American culture. Study focuses on the composing processes used to write three children's stories and the responses of children to the stories. The author's intended meaning was compared with the children's construction of meaning. After each story was read aloud, response was elicited by each participant retelling the story and answering open-ended interview questions. One week later the participant was asked to retell the story a second time to determine changes in concept of story. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory methodology. …
