Voices Of The Self In Daniel Defoe's Fiction: An Alternative Marxist Approach., Zaixin Zhang Jan 1991

Voices Of The Self In Daniel Defoe's Fiction: An Alternative Marxist Approach., Zaixin Zhang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The alternative Marxist approach to literary criticism in the present study consists of three "vocal" modes of interpretation: the public voice, the private voice, and the homeless voice of the self. The public voice represents authorial visions of the ideological real projected by dominant ideology that covers up the "objective" real, while the private voice corresponds to the authorial conscious or unconscious insertion into radical ideology that turns the "objective" real into the ideological real. However, the homeless voice of the self obliterates any ties with history and authorial ideology. A personification of the Marxist "particular interest" of the self, …

Distribution And Management Of And Soybean Resistance To Calonectria Crotalariae, The Causal Pathogen Of Red Crown Rot Of Soybean., Dana Kent Berner Jan 1991

Distribution And Management Of And Soybean Resistance To Calonectria Crotalariae, The Causal Pathogen Of Red Crown Rot Of Soybean., Dana Kent Berner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The national, local, and in-field distribution of Calonectria crotalariae (Loos) Bell and Sobers, as reflected in the distribution of Cylindrocladium black rot (CBR) of peanut, red crown rot (RCR) of soybean and microsclerotia densities in soil, respectively, are described. The current distribution of RCR in Louisiana is probably due to the introduction of the pathogen on indigo (Indigofera tinctoria (L.)) and to subsequent movement by man. RCR has been reported in 17 Louisiana parishes. In field studies, delayed soybean planting was efficacious in reducing RCR incidence. Effects of delayed planting on yield were maturity group dependent and confounded with RCR …

The Effect Of Co-Culture Systems From Non-Reproductive Origins On The Development Of Superovulated And In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Embryos., Hak-Nam Kim Jan 1991

The Effect Of Co-Culture Systems From Non-Reproductive Origins On The Development Of Superovulated And In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Embryos., Hak-Nam Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this experiment was to compare in vitro development of bovine embryos obtained from superovulation and in vitro fertilization (IVF) in two unique monolayer co-culture systems, bovine fetal spleen cell monolayers (BFS) and chick embryo fibroblast monolayers (CEF). To test the possible harmful effects of these co-culture systems, 225 murine morula-stage embryos were cultured for 72 hours with these monolayers. The percentage of hatched embryos was 62.7% in culture medium alone, 76% in BFS and 57.3% in CEF. BFS and CEF did not induce any detectable harmful effect on these developing murine embryos. When 60 transferable morula-stage bovine …

Arcadia Disjointed: Confrontations With Texts, Polemical, Utopian, And Picaresque., Deborah Ann Jacobs Jan 1991

Arcadia Disjointed: Confrontations With Texts, Polemical, Utopian, And Picaresque., Deborah Ann Jacobs

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Beginning with the historical example provided by the extended text of the Popish Plot, that is, by the polemical press battle which raged during this major threat to Charles II's Restoration government, I identify what I term a narrator/narrative disjunction. The narrator/narrative disjunction occurs when the narrator or teller relates one story, while the narrative he or she relates suggests or strongly intimates that the narrator should be adjudged less than reliable. In the course of this exploration, I read several Tory polemical texts on the Popish Plot, including Dryden's Absalom and Achitophel, not as literary works, but rather as …

Behavioral Characteristics Of Damaged Steel Repaired By Heat Straightening., Paul Franklin Robinson Jan 1991

Behavioral Characteristics Of Damaged Steel Repaired By Heat Straightening., Paul Franklin Robinson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A comprehensive set of experiments is conducted on damaged steel plates and rolled shapes which have been subjected to heat straightening. Effects of the repair process on the tensile properties and residual stresses in the repaired steel are experimentally determined for the first time. Based on the results, rational decisions can be made concerning the use of heat straightening and its limitations. For the first time in a laboratory setting, heavily damaged plate elements and rolled shapes are repetitively subjected to vee heat applications to produce desired straightening. Movements resulting from each heat application are recorded and provide an adequate …

Discriminating Borderline Personality Disorder (Bpd) From Major Depression And Refining Diagnostic Criteria For Bpd., Betty Susan Head Jan 1991

Discriminating Borderline Personality Disorder (Bpd) From Major Depression And Refining Diagnostic Criteria For Bpd., Betty Susan Head

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Investigators have sought to clarify the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) category by comparing it with other personality disorders (e.g., Clarkin, Widiger, Frances, Hurt, & Gilmore, 1983; Zanarini, Gunderson, Grankenburg, & Chauncey, 1990), schizophrenia (see review by Siever & Gunderson, 1978), and major depression (see review by Gunderson & Phillips, 1991). The current study investigated the discriminative validity of the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) borderline criteria and qualitative differences in depression between borderlines (BPD) and patients diagnosed with major depressive episode (MDE). The 100 subjects were inpatients (n = 94) and outpatients (n = 6), assigned to one of three …

Some Results On Minors For Graphs And Matroids., Lawrence Alan Wargo Jan 1991

Some Results On Minors For Graphs And Matroids., Lawrence Alan Wargo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation solves some problems relating to the theory of graphs. The first type of problem considered concerns the structure of various classes of graphs which arise naturally from outerplanar graphs. These problems are motivated by Chartrand and Harary's well-known characterization of outerplanar graphs. This theorem states that K$\sb4$ and K$\sb{2,3}$ are the only non-outerplanar graphs for which both G$\\$e, the deletion of the edge e from the graph G, and G/e, the contraction of the edge e, are outerplanar for all edges e of G. Following Gubser's characterization of almost-planar graphs, we begin our study of graphs related to …

Identification Of The Intermediate Allosteric Species In Human Hemoglobin Reveals A Molecular Code For Cooperative Switching, Margaret A. Daugherty, Madeline A. Shea, Jeremy A. Johnson, Vince J. Licata, George J. Turner, Gary K. Ackers Jan 1991

Identification Of The Intermediate Allosteric Species In Human Hemoglobin Reveals A Molecular Code For Cooperative Switching, Margaret A. Daugherty, Madeline A. Shea, Jeremy A. Johnson, Vince J. Licata, George J. Turner, Gary K. Ackers

Faculty Publications

The 10 ligation species of human cyanomethemoglobin were previously found to distribute into three discrete cooperative free energy levels according to a combinatorial code (i.e., dependent on both the number and configuration of ligated subunits). Analysis of this distribution showed that the hemoglobin tetramer occupies a third allosteric state in addition to those of the unligated (T) and fully ligated (R) species. To determine the nature of the intermediate allosteric state, we have studied the effects of pH, temperature, and single-site mutations on its free energy of quaternary assembly, in parallel with corresponding data on the deoxy (T) and fully …
