Internal Labor Markets: Labor Process And Market Power Effects., Rebecca Grace Long
Internal Labor Markets: Labor Process And Market Power Effects., Rebecca Grace Long
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study contends that previous investigations into the nature of internal labor markets have been hampered by their dependence on various macro-level variables (e.g., sectors, industries, strategies) that ignore the often wide variation of employment arrangements within individual firms. It proposes that a better understanding of the employment arrangements associated with individual jobs may be gained by not only examining a job's technological components, but also the relative power of a firm's various coalitions. The data used in the reported study were acquired from the headquarters of the U.S. Bureau of Employment and Training's Occupational Field Analysis Centers in Raleigh, …
Ecosystem Models Of Aquatic Primary Production And Fish Migration In Laguna De Terminos, Mexico., Enrique Reyes
Ecosystem Models Of Aquatic Primary Production And Fish Migration In Laguna De Terminos, Mexico., Enrique Reyes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laguna de Terminos is Mexico's largest coastal lagoon. There is a high habitat diversity including open water, mangroves, seagrasses and marshes, which supports Mexico's most economically important fisheries. Understanding ecosystem processes is essential for effective management of the lagoon's resources. This research developed landscape-level models for aquatic primary production (LAPPTER model), and fish migration (ROE model) in Laguna de Terminos. The ROE model was developed first as a theoretical approach, and later integrated into the LAPPTER model as a submodule which utilizes simulated production as a food source. The ROE model includes behavioral rules for fish movement based on environmental …

Identification Of Plant Science Concepts Needed In Agriscience Programs Of The Future., Camile Patrick Gaspard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify the plant science concepts which should be taught in secondary agriculture programs of the future as perceived by innovators in the field of plant science. The Delphi technique was used to gain the perceptions of a nation-wide panel of plant science professionals. The panel was comprised of three groups of plant scientists: secondary plant science teachers, university plant scientists, and plant scientists working in industry. The secondary plant science teachers were selected from the national and regional winners of the agriscience teacher award. The university plant scientists and plant scientists working in …
Urea Transformations In Flooded Soil., Chawalit Hongprayoon
Urea Transformations In Flooded Soil., Chawalit Hongprayoon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laboratory incubation studies were conducted to measure adsorption, movement, and transformations of urea and hydrolyzed ammoniacal N in flooded soil columns. Urea was added to the floodwater (750 mg N L$\sp{-1}$, equivalent to 150 kg N ha$\sp{-1}$) of Crowley silt loam soil columns and urea diffusion and urea hydrolysis were measured. Subsequent NH$\sb4\sp+$-N and NO$\sb3\sp-$-N distribution after urea application and hydrolysis were measured over a 30 d period under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Effects of percolation rates (0, 1, and 2 cm d$\sp{-1}$), and the use of urease inhibitor, N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), on movement and transformations of urea in …
Musical Invention And Poetry In The Late Vocal Works Of Anton Webern., Melanie S. Kronick
Musical Invention And Poetry In The Late Vocal Works Of Anton Webern., Melanie S. Kronick
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From the time of his composition of Op. 23 (1933-34) until his death, Anton Webern composed a series of important twelve-tone vocal works whose texts are drawn exclusively from the poetry of Hildegard Jone. Yet Webern scholars typically ignore the texts of these works when analyzing the scores in which the poems are embedded. My discussion shows, however, that Webern made important musical choices as a result of the poetic content of his texts. While Jone's poems are plentiful in metaphors of natural phenomena and images from German romantic poetry, I argue that they are concerned as much with poetic …

A Cryogenic Double-Resonant Parabridge Motion Transducer For Resonant-Mass Gravitational Wave Detectors, O. D. Aguiar, W. W. Johnson, W. O. Hamilton
Faculty Publications
We designed, constructed, and tested at 4.2 K (using two different low phase noise electrical pump generators) a cryogenic double-resonant parabridge motion transducer made out of niobium, whose electrical output was amplified by a two-stage metal-semiconductor field-effect transistor cryogenic amplifier. Most of the experimental results agreed well with the theoretical models. We were able to adjust the two electrical bridge resonant frequencies at the pump frequency, allowing us to obtain an electromechanical coupling as high as 0.054, and we successfully measured the mechanical Brownian motion of this transducer. In one case, we observed a dip in the electrical noise spectrum …

Normal Matrices Over Hermitian Discrete Valuation Rings, William A. Adkins
Normal Matrices Over Hermitian Discrete Valuation Rings, William A. Adkins
Faculty Publications
A generalization of the classical spectral theorem for normal complex matrices is proved for matrices with entries from a class of discrete valuation rings which we have called hermitian. The hermitian discrete valuation rings include the convergent complex power series in one variable and the complex formal power series in one variable. Thus one obtains an algebraic proof of Rellich's theorem on diagnolizability of hermitian analytic matrices which is simultaneously valid for both the rings of convergent and formal power series. © 1991.
George Price Boyce And The Consolation Of Landscape, Julia Chandler L'Enfant
George Price Boyce And The Consolation Of Landscape, Julia Chandler L'Enfant
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
George Price Boyce (1826-1897) is little known today except by his diaries, which chronicle his association with the Pre-Raphaelite circle in London from 1851 to 1875. Yet in his own day Boyce was widely admired for his watercolor landscapes, and after 1864 was a leading member of the select Royal Water-Colour Society. His landscapes were thought to have a special, even eccentric quality, particularly his work from about 1859 to 1870, generally acknowledged to be his best.
Critics and art historians who take note of Boyce today almost always link him with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This thesis, however, seeks to …

Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander
Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander
Faculty Publications
We present theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation in a rare-gas medium. The experimental results obtained at Saclay with a 1064 nm Nd-YAG laser in the 1013 W cm-2 intensity range are summarized. The harmonic emission strengths first decrease rather steeply for the first orders, then form a long plateau up to the 21st harmonic in xenon, or up to the 33rd harmonic in argon, before decreasing again rather abruptly. The theoretical description of these experiments consists first in the calculation of the photoemission spectra emitted by a single atom. The spectra are obtained by numerically integrating a time-dependent Schrôdinger …

Acketa has determined all binary paving matroids. This paper specifies all ternary paving matroids. There are precisely four minor-maximal 3-connected such matroids: S(5, 6, 12), PG(2, 3), the real affine cube, and one other 8-element self-dual matroid. © 1991.
A Molecular Blueprint For The Pore-Forming Structure Of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, Anne Grove, John M. Tomich, Mauricio Montal
A Molecular Blueprint For The Pore-Forming Structure Of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, Anne Grove, John M. Tomich, Mauricio Montal
Faculty Publications
A protein that imitates the sequence of a highly conserved segment predicted to line the pore of dihydropyridine-sensitive L-type calcium channels was designed and synthesized. Single-channel conductance properties were studied in planar lipid bilayers. The synthetic protein emulates the ionic conductance, ionic selectivity, and pharmacological properties of the authentic calcium channel, including the stereospecific action of agonist and antagonist enantiomers of the dihydropyridine BayK 8644. The identified sequence is identical in L-type calcium channels from skeletal muscle and isoforms of cardiac muscle, brain, and aorta. It is plausible that this structural motif represents the molecular blueprint for the pore-forming structure …

Non-Classical Derivation Of The Transport Theorems For Wave Fronts, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Non-Classical Derivation Of The Transport Theorems For Wave Fronts, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
We establish a relationship between the derivatives of generalized functions and the transport theorems for moving surfaces of discontinuity. We study the motion of a propagating and deforming wave front which itself can have a moving discontinuity on its surface. With the help of the theory of generalized derivatives we present a general transport theorem which embodies the known results as special cases. © 1991.

Comparative Ontogeny Of Cranial Ossification In The Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma Maculatum, And The Tailed Frog, Ascaphus Truei, Michael Keith Moore
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ontogenetic sequence of ossification of the cranium, including descriptions of the development of individual elements, from initial appearance of bone through adulthood, is described for two species of amphibian: the Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma maculatum, and the Tailed Frog, Ascaphus truei. This study is based on cleared-and-stained developmental series of 269 specimens of Ambystoma and 325 of Ascaphus. Nine stages of cranial development are defined for Ambystoma maculatum. By metamorphosis, all bones of the skull of Ambystoma except the articular have begun to ossify. The ossification sequence of Ambystoma shows little interindividual variation; only 6 specimens do not follow the …

Amplification Dynamics Of Human-Specific (Hs) Alu Family Members, Mark A. Batzer, Vandana A. Gudi, J. Carlos Mena, David W. Foltz, Rene J. Herrera, Prescott L. Deininger
Faculty Publications
We have investigated the distribution of several recently Inserted Alu family members within representatives of diverse human groups. Human population studies using 65 unrelated human DNA samples, as well as a familial study to test inheritance, showed that Individual Alu family members could be divided into three groups. The first group consisted of relatively older Alu family members which were monomorphic (homozygous) throughout the population tested (HS C3N1 and C4N6). The second group (HS C4N2, C4N5 and C4N8), apparently Inserted into other repetitive regions of the genome, resulting in inconclusive results in the PCR test used. However, it is clear …

Propagation Of Chaos And The Mckean-Vlasov Equation In Duals Of Nuclear Spaces, T. S. Chiang, G. Kallianpur, P. Sundar
Faculty Publications
An interacting system of n stochastic differential equations taking values in the dual of a countable Hilbertian nuclear space is considered. The limit (in probability) of the sequence of empirical measures determined by the above systems as n tends to ∞ is identified with the law of the unique solution of the McKean-Vlasov equation. An application of our result to interacting neurons is briefly discussed. The propagation of chaos result obtained in this paper is shown to contain and improve the well-known finite-dimensional results. © 1991 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Eruption Dynamics And Petrology Of The Most Recent Eruptions Of Nevado Del Ruiz Volcano, Colombia, South America, Richard Henry Young
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Field measurements and petrographic analyses of pumices from the most recent tephra deposits of Nevado del Ruiz volcano provide a context in which to view the disastrous eruption of 13 November, 1985 (R0). The pumices are all crystal-rich, two-pyroxene andesites to dacites with whole rock SiO2 contents of 62 - 66 wt.%, and magma water contents estimated to be between 1 - 4 wt.%. The 1985 tephra has greater petrologic diversity than earlier deposits which may be related to an input of a hotter, more basic magma into the Ruiz system, as suggested by xenocrystic olivine which is most …
Tide Gauge Records, Water Level Rise, And Subsidence In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner
Tide Gauge Records, Water Level Rise, And Subsidence In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Long-term water level changes in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using tide gauge records for this century. Strong coherence exists between the annual mean water changes at Galveston, Texas, and (1) the relatively geologically-stable west coast of Florida, (2) global mean sea level, and 93) the subsiding Louisiana coast. Water levels at the Galveston gauge, one of the longest records (81 yr), have risen steadily, but not accelerated over the long-term. The apparent acceleration of water rise in the recent two decades is within the historical pattern, and is probably driven by regional or global, but not local …
