Gumbo Magazine, Fall 1993, Louisiana State University And Agricultural And Mechanical College Oct 1993

Gumbo Magazine, Fall 1993, Louisiana State University And Agricultural And Mechanical College

Gumbo Yearbook

In words and especially photos, the Gumbo shows the people, places, and events that make each year unique. In addition to formal portraits of schools and departments, the book contains hundreds of snapshots of students with their friends and dozens of pages showcasing organizations. Gumbo Magazine, which chronicled the 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years, was primarily published when revenues were insufficient for a hardbound book.

X-Ray Crystallographic Identification Of A Protein-Binding Site For Both All-Trans- And 9-Cis-Retinoic Acid, Marcia E. Newcomer, R. Steven Pappas, David E. Ong Oct 1993

X-Ray Crystallographic Identification Of A Protein-Binding Site For Both All-Trans- And 9-Cis-Retinoic Acid, Marcia E. Newcomer, R. Steven Pappas, David E. Ong

Faculty Publications

The elucidation of how a protein-binding site might specifically recognize both the all-trans and 9-cis isomers of retinoic acid is of particular interest because of the recently discovered binding specificities of the nuclear receptors for retinoic acid. Two families of nuclear receptors for retinoic acid have been described, which are designated RAR (for retinoic acid receptor) and RXR (for retinoid-X receptor). The RXR family of receptors is specific for 9-cis-retinoic acid, whereas the RAR-type receptor is activated by either 9-cis- or all-transretinoic acid. During the x-ray structure determination of a secreted epididymal retinoic acid-binding protein, with and without retinoic acid, …

Structure Of The Epididymal Retinoic Acid Binding Protein At 2.1 Å Resolution, Marcia E. Newcomer Sep 1993

Structure Of The Epididymal Retinoic Acid Binding Protein At 2.1 Å Resolution, Marcia E. Newcomer

Faculty Publications

Background: Androgen-dependent proteins in the lumen of the epididymis are required for sperm maturation. One of these is a retinoic acid binding protein, E-RABP, which binds both all-trans and 9-cis retinoic acid. The other retinoid-binding proteins whose structures are known do not bind 9-cis retinoids. Results: We describe the X-ray structure determination of E-RABP with and without bound ligand. The ligand binds deep in the β-barrel of the protein, the β-ionone ring innermost. The binding site, like the ligand, is amphipathic and the deepest part of the cavity is formed by a ring of aromatic amino acids. The isoprene tail …

Matrices Over Differential Fields Which Commute With Their Derivative, William A. Adkins, Jean Claude Evard, Robert M. Guralnick Sep 1993

Matrices Over Differential Fields Which Commute With Their Derivative, William A. Adkins, Jean Claude Evard, Robert M. Guralnick

Faculty Publications

A theorem is proved concerning the diagonalizability of a matrix over a differential field by means of a similarity transformation from the field of constants of the differential field. This result contains, as a special case, known results concerning the diagonalizability over the complex numbers of a Hermitian matrix of analytic functions under the hypothesis that the matrix commutes with its derivative. © 1993.

Monotone Clutters, Guoli Ding Aug 1993

Monotone Clutters, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

A clutter is k-monotone, completely monotone or threshold if the corresponding Boolean function is k-monotone, completely monotone or threshold, respectively. A characterization of k-monotone clutters in terms of excluded minors is presented here. This result is used to derive a characterization of 2-monotone matroids and of 3-monotone matroids (which turn out to be all the threshold matroids). © 1993.

Collaborative Writing In Petroleum Engineering: A Case Study Of Petroleum Engineers In An Academic Setting, Michael Anne Coffey Aug 1993

Collaborative Writing In Petroleum Engineering: A Case Study Of Petroleum Engineers In An Academic Setting, Michael Anne Coffey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Interest in collaborative writing has surged in composition studies since the mid-tolate 1980s; aspects addressed include motivation, the composing process, the kinds of participants, authorship, conflict, etc. Much composition research concentrates on collaboration in the workplace to gain an understanding of collaborative writing that can be readily transferred to the classroom and that can prepare students for the social, as opposed to solitary, act of writing—to encourage collaborative thought. In this study, I attempted to find out more about what occurs in the stages (prewriting, writing, post-writing) of collaborative writing. My subjects were petroleum engineers on university campuses. Departments were …

High-Order Harmonic Generation With Short-Pulse Lasers, Kenneth J. Schafer, Jeffrey L. Krause, Kenneth C. Kulander Jul 1993

High-Order Harmonic Generation With Short-Pulse Lasers, Kenneth J. Schafer, Jeffrey L. Krause, Kenneth C. Kulander

Faculty Publications

Recent progress in the understanding of high-order harmonic conversion from atoms and ions exposed to high-intensity, short-pulse optical lasers is reviewed. We find that ions can produce harmonics comparable in strength to those obtained from neutral atoms, and that the emission extends to much higher order. Simple scaling laws for the strength of the harmonic emission and the maximum observable harmonic are suggested. These results imply that the photoemission observed in recent experiments in helium and neon contains contributions from ions as well as neutrals.

Gibberellic Acid Seed Treatment In Rice (Bulletin #842), Richard T. Dunand Jul 1993

Gibberellic Acid Seed Treatment In Rice (Bulletin #842), Richard T. Dunand

LSU AgCenter Bulletins

Gibberellic acid (GA3) was the first naturally occurring plant growth regulator (PGR) labeled for use on rice in the United States. GA3 is now profoundly influencing rice production in the southern United States. This bulletin describes the cultural and varietal problems related to emergence that needed to be addressed and provides the step-by-step approach leading to the use of GA3 as a seed treatment.

An Economic Analysis Of Waterfowl Hunting In Louisiana (Bulletin #841), Christopher Ec Gan, E. Jane Luzar

LSU AgCenter Bulletins

Waterfowl-related activities generate millions of dollars for Louisiana’s economy annually, with duck and goose hunting as one of the most significant sporting activities. Economic information on the characteristics that influence the decision to hunt waterfowl can provide valuable information to resource managers faced with declining waterfowl populations as well as declining numbers of waterfowl hunters.

Stable Sets Versus Independent Sets, Guoli Ding Jul 1993

Stable Sets Versus Independent Sets, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

Let G=(V, E) be a graph and let L(G) be the set of stable sets of G. The matroidal number of G, denoted by m(G), is the smallest integer m such that L(G)=J1∪J2∪⋯∪Jm for some matroids Mi=(V,Ji)(i=1,2,...,m). We characterize the graphs of matroidal number at most m for all m≥1. For m≤3, we show that the graphs of matroidal number at most m can be characterized by excluding finitely many induced subgraphs. We also consider a similar problem which replaces 'union' by 'intersection'. © 1993.

A Decomposition Of Locally Finite Graphs, Bogdan Oporowski

Faculty Publications

We prove that every infinite, connected, locally finite graph G can be expressed as an edge-disjoint union of a leafless tree T, rooted at an arbitrarily chosen vertex of G, and a collection of finite graphs H1, H2, H3,...such that, for all i less than j, the vertices common to Hi and Hj lie in T, and no vertex of Hj lies on T between a vertex of Hi∩T and the root. © 1993.

Structure Of Abrikosov Vortices In Su(2) Lattice Gauge Theory, V. Singh, D. A. Browne, R. W. Haymaker

Faculty Publications

We calculate the electric flux and magnetic monopole current distribution in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximal Abelian gauge. The current distribution confines the flux in a dual Abrikosov vortex whose core size is comparable to the flux penetration depth. The observed structure is described by a dual Ginzburg-Landau model. © 1993.

Cone Penetration In Cemented Deposits-A Field Study, Semih Arslan May 1993

Cone Penetration In Cemented Deposits-A Field Study, Semih Arslan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neglecting cementation results in an underestimation of slope stability and pile capacity in design and analysis of geotechnical engineering problems related to cemented deposits. Developing methods to identify and assess the engineering characteristics of cemented deposits is an important subject in geotechnical engineering.

This study is conducted to evaluate the reliability of the prediction schemes proposed by previous investigators through a field study of cone penetration in a cemented deposit and respective laboratory triaxial study on undisturbed cemented specimens. The effect of cementation on cone penetration resistance is investigated through the field study, and the effects of cementation on drained …

A Construction Heuristic For One-Dimensional Machine Location Problems, P. Sobhan Babu May 1993

A Construction Heuristic For One-Dimensional Machine Location Problems, P. Sobhan Babu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is to develop a new heuristic for solving the one-dimensional machine location problem. The major objective is to assign a set of machines to different locations available along a material handling path, so that the total material handling distance (or time) is minimized. One-dimensional machine layout problems with both symmetric and asymmetric flows are addressed in this research.

Based on the flow pattern of materials between the machines, a construction heuristic is developed here to solve the machine layout problem. The same heuristic is used to solve the problems with asymmetric and symmetric flows. The …
