The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide Concentration On Carbonic Anhydrase And Other Proteins In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii., Mamta Rawat Jan 1994

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide Concentration On Carbonic Anhydrase And Other Proteins In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii., Mamta Rawat

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Unicellular green algae, like Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, are able to grow photoautotrophically at low levels of CO$\sb2$. The efficient growth at low CO$\sb2$ levels is a reflection of the CO$\sb2$ concentrating mechanism that is induced when cells are adapted to low CO$\sb2$ levels. In this dissertation, the effect of CO$\sb2$ on carbonic anhydrase and other proteins in C. reinhardtii is discussed. In the first part of the dissertation, the isolation and purification of a new isoenzyme of carbonic anhydrase is reported. This carbonic anhydrase is present when cells are grown in high CO$\sb2$ but absent in low CO$\sb2$. It is located …

Photoemission Studies Of Electronic Dispersion In Metals And Thin Film Systems., Zhe Qu Jan 1994

Photoemission Studies Of Electronic Dispersion In Metals And Thin Film Systems., Zhe Qu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We have studied the electronic dispersion of Cu and the Cu/Ru(0001) bimetallic system using photoelectron spectroscopy. Images of electron emission from Cu(100), Cu(111), and Cu/Ru(0001) have been obtained using an ellipsoidal-mirror analyzer (EMA). This energy analyzer collects photoemitted electrons over a large solid angle, preserving their angular information and providing an image of intensity versus emission angle. The images provide direct information on band dispersion. The surface state of Cu(111) was measured using the EMA at different binding energies. By combining these images, we have obtained the surface state dispersion in three dimensional E vs k space. Our results are …

Dynamic Behavior Of Magnetic Latex Particles And Polyelectrolytes., Daewon Sohn Jan 1994

Dynamic Behavior Of Magnetic Latex Particles And Polyelectrolytes., Daewon Sohn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dynamic behavior of magnetic latex particles has been explored. Polarized and depolarized dynamic light scattering from binary and ternary systems of these particles have provided rotational and translational diffusion coefficients. Microscopic views of rotational and translational diffusion of these particles are compared with macroscopic viscosity from the Stokes-Einstein equation (Chapter 2). The polymeric stabilization of magnetic latex particles has also been investigated by static and dynamic light scattering. Using the optical anisotropy of magnetic latex particles, the translational and rotational diffusion coefficients of the particles under various salt conditions were determined. The stability of the superparamagnetic latex particles depends …

Feasibility Studies Of Radionuclide Removal From Kaolinite By Electrokinetic Soil Processing., Dionisio Alberto Ugaz Jan 1994

Feasibility Studies Of Radionuclide Removal From Kaolinite By Electrokinetic Soil Processing., Dionisio Alberto Ugaz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Electrokinetic soil processing is an emerging remediation technique with the capability to decontaminate low permeability soils containing heavy metals and some organics. The process consists on applying small current densities between electrodes immersed in the soil mass; the electrochemistry developed across the system causes desorption and transport of the contaminants to the electrodes where, depending on their chemistry, they precipitate, electrodeposit, or elute with the electroosmotic flow. Its potential to remove selected radionuclides (uranium-238, thorium-232, and radium-226) is assessed in the present studies. The process removed 85 to 95% uranium-238 at 1000 pCi/g activity from kaolinite. Complicating features arise (i.e. …

A Study Of The Radiative Properties Of Agglomerated Flame Particulates Using Light Scattering., Demetris Theodosios Venizelos Jan 1994

A Study Of The Radiative Properties Of Agglomerated Flame Particulates Using Light Scattering., Demetris Theodosios Venizelos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The in-situ optical technique of inferring the soot agglomerate structural and optical properties from the measurements of the extinction cross section, the differential scattering cross section, the dissymmetry ratios in both planes of polarization, and the depolarization ratio, was investigated in detail by this study. A sensitivity analysis of the technique revealed that the dissymmetry ratios are insensitive to both the real and imaginary part of the refractive index. The ratio of the differential scattering to extinction cross sections was also found to be a weak function of the imaginary part of the refractive index. The sensitivity analysis results indicate …

Interactions Of The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker), And Soybean, Glycine Max (L.) Merrill, Involving Nitrogen: Effects On Host Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation And Larval Development And Survival., Alan Thomas Wier Jan 1994

Interactions Of The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker), And Soybean, Glycine Max (L.) Merrill, Involving Nitrogen: Effects On Host Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation And Larval Development And Survival., Alan Thomas Wier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Acetylene reduction and nitrogen difference assays were used to evaluate effects of defoliation by soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), during reproductive growth stages on symbiotic nitrogen fixation by soybean. Defoliation (50-55%) of group VI cultivar Lee from full bloom into pod development stages caused up to 85% reduction of nitrogenase activity, whereas lower defoliation levels (32%) during seed development did not affect nitrogenase activity. Defoliation (74-94%) of group IV cultivar Clark caused 80-100% reduction of nitrogenase activity, regardless of whether defoliation occurred during bloom and pod development or during seed development. The nitrogen difference assay identified a reduction in the …

Alignment System For X-Ray Lithography., Hao Zhou Jan 1994

Alignment System For X-Ray Lithography., Hao Zhou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Among the various contenders for VLSI lithography below 0.1 $\mu$m, proximity x-ray printing is the most promising one and has been investigated for many years. It will require overlay accuracy far below 100 nm, 3$\sigma$, typical of today's systems. In addition, it should use wafer marks that permit planar resist flow, so their apparent position is not distorted. We have demonstrated an alignment system that uses a linear zone plate on the mask to focus laser light into a line on the wafer. The wafer mark is the boundary between two adjacent fine pitch gratings. These gratings diffract the light …

A Study Of Nontraditional Referral And Screening Of Culturally Different Gifted Children., Jo Anne Welch Jan 1994

A Study Of Nontraditional Referral And Screening Of Culturally Different Gifted Children., Jo Anne Welch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using nontraditional referral and screening procedures to identify culturally different (minority) gifted children. The extreme disparity of representative frequencies of these groups within gifted programs nationally and in Louisiana prompted research in four parishes (counties) to compare nontraditional with traditional identification procedures. The nontraditional referral procedures included child search methods and parent and teacher training about the characteristics of giftedness among culturally different populations. Nontraditional screening procedures included the use of creativity and leadership checklists, analysis of achievement in all academic areas, and the use of the Matrix Analogies …

Patterns Of Adaptive Functioning In Cortical And Subcortical Diagnostic Groups Of Dementia., Paul Matthew Dammers Jan 1994

Patterns Of Adaptive Functioning In Cortical And Subcortical Diagnostic Groups Of Dementia., Paul Matthew Dammers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Much debate exists as to the independence of subcortical dementia as a recognizable clinical entity. Researchers in the dementia area seem to accept that cortical dementias are relatively more incapacitating than subcortical dementias. However, there are no empirical studies to support this claim. Impairment in adaptive functioning is one criterion to be met in the diagnosis of dementia according to DSM-III-R (APA, 1987) and NINCDS-ADRDA criteria (McKhann, Drachman, Folstein et al., 1984). However, a comparison of the degree of impairment in adaptive functioning between subcortical and cortical diagnostic groups of dementia has never been systematically and empirically investigated. This study …

"Vertue Vanish'd": Censorship Of Early English Women Dramatists., Sigrid Marika King Jan 1994

"Vertue Vanish'd": Censorship Of Early English Women Dramatists., Sigrid Marika King

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation traces the impact of censorship on women dramatists from the Renaissance through the late eighteenth century, focusing on the plays of Elizabeth Cary, Aphra Behn, Mary Pix, and Susanna Centlivre. Several types of censorship--politica1, religious, and moral--affected the work of these playwrights, and several agencies--the Master of Revels, the audience, the theatre manager, and the prompter--were involved in censorship of their works. When early modern women wrote for the stage, they confronted the strictures against publication and public exposure. The four playwrights discussed here used a combination of self-censorship and subversive strategies in their work. Self-censorship was particularly …

Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Of Risk Factors For The Development Of Eating Disorder Symptoms In Adolescents., Susan Elizabeth Barker Jan 1994

Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Of Risk Factors For The Development Of Eating Disorder Symptoms In Adolescents., Susan Elizabeth Barker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Risk factors which have been shown to influence the development of body dissatisfaction and eating disturbance in adolescents include depressed mood, low self-esteem, a history of teasing about physical appearance, social and parental pressure to be thin, pubertal timing, and actual body weight or body mass index. In the present study, an etiological model was proposed with these risk factors as predictors of the presence of eating disorder symptoms; this association was hypothesized to be mediated by dissatisfaction with body shape and weight. Structural equation modeling was used to test this theoretical model within a total sample of 345 adolescent …

Reservoir Performance History Matching Using Type-Curves., Jeffrey Guy Callard Jan 1994

Reservoir Performance History Matching Using Type-Curves., Jeffrey Guy Callard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recently, decline-curve analysis has expanded to permit engineers to analyze a petroleum reservoir directly in regard to its fluid-flow characteristics and its volumetric extent using rate-time type-curves of the constant terminal pressure solution of the diffusivity equation. This analysis is of enormous value to reservoir managers whose goal is to maximize oil and gas production from a petroleum reservoir. Reservoir extent, continuity, and flow capacity are paramount characteristics that are considered when developing models that predict reservoir performance while using alternative depletion strategies, such as during fluid-injection projects or enhanced recovery. Reservoir producing conditions to which this technique can be …

Cauldron Of Changes: Feminist Spirituality In Contemporary American Women's Fiction., Janice Celia Crosby Jan 1994

Cauldron Of Changes: Feminist Spirituality In Contemporary American Women's Fiction., Janice Celia Crosby

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My dissertation, Cauldron of Changes: Feminist Spirituality in Contemporary American Women's Fiction, combines feminist perspectives from literary and religious thinkers to inform a discussion of the overlooked aspects of contemporary European-American women's speculative fiction. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the feminist spirituality movement as it incorporates Goddess- and earth-centered religious perspectives, and covers the themes common to both spiritual practice and fiction. "Rewriting History and Legend," the second chapter, shows how the feminist spirituality movement has furthered the feminist project of rewriting myth, legend, and history, thus challenging the foundations of the cultural tradition of the West. In …

The Thousand Appliances: Virginia Woolf And The Tools Of Visual Literacy., Janice M. Stein Jan 1994

The Thousand Appliances: Virginia Woolf And The Tools Of Visual Literacy., Janice M. Stein

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The texts of Virginia Stephen Woolf are rife with references to writers' tools, which she referred to in her diary as "the thousand appliances one needs for writing even a sentence." This dissertation examines the exact nature of Woolf's "need" for the tools of her craft and their influence upon her thought and art. Pens, and by association, ink and the writer's hands, were the center of all her authorial experiences and provided the literal link between the idea of art and its fruition as a work of art. The graphic shapes of words and paralinguistic devices such as punctuation …

The Effect Of Verbal Elaborations On Memory In Young And Older Adults, Katie E. Cherry, Denise C. Park, David A. Frieske, Renee L. Rowley

Faculty Publications

The Stein paradigm was used to examine the circumstances under which verbal elaborations enhance memory in young and older adults. Subjects studied target adjectives that were embedded in one of three sentence contexts that varied in elaboration of the subject-adjective relationship: (1) nonelaborated base sentences; (2) base sentences with semantically consistent, but arbitrary verbal, elaborations; and (3) base sentences with explanatory verbal elaborations that clarified the significance of the subject-adjective relationship. The presence of the elaborations was varied at encoding and retrieval, and cued recall of the target adjectives was tested with incidental and intentional learning procedures. In Experiments 1A …

In deep inelastic, neutral current scattering of electrons and protons at s=296 GeV, we observe in the ZEUS detector events with a large rapidity gap in the hadronic final state. They occur in the region of small Bjorken x and are observed up to Q2 of 100 GeV2. They account for about 5% of the events with Q2≥10 GeV2. Their general properties are inconsistent with the dominant mechanism of deep inelastic scattering, where color is transferred between the scattered quark and the proton remnant, and suggest that the underlying production mechanism is the diffractive dissociation of the virtual photon. © …
