Results are presented on neutral current, deep inelastic scattering measured in collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons. The events typically populate a range in Q2 from 10 to 100 GeV2. The values of x extend down to x ∼ 10-4 which is two orders of magnitude lower than previously measured at such Q2 values in fixed target experiments. The measured cross sections are in accord with the extrapolations of current parametrisations of parton distributions. © 1993.

Dissipative Effects On The Mean Square Displacement Of An Oscillator, X. L. Li, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell
Dissipative Effects On The Mean Square Displacement Of An Oscillator, X. L. Li, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell
Faculty Publications
The localization of an oscillator in a dissipative environment may be characterized by its mean square displacement. In the case of a general heat bath, we write down an expression for this quantity as an integral involving the imaginary part of the generalized susceptibility. This integral is evaluated explicitly in the case of both Ohmic and blackbody radiation heat baths, leading us to the conclusion that localization is enhanced by an increase of dissipation or oscillator fequency (binding) and by a decrease in temperature. © 1993.

Disjoint Circuits On A Klein Bottle And A Theorem On Posets, Guoli Ding
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we consider the problem of packing disjoint directed circuits in a digraph drawn on the Klein bottle or on the torus. We formulate a problem on posets which unifies all the problems considered by Ding et al. and by Seymour. Then we generalize all the results of their two papers by proving a theorem on our special posets. © 1993.

Endogenous Retinoids In Rat Epididymal Tissue And Rat And Human Spermatozoa, R. S. Pappas, M. E. Newcomer, D. E. Ong
Faculty Publications
Recent work has demonstrated high levels of retinoid binding proteins in rat epididymis, and a lumenal retinoic acid binding protein has been purified. These findings suggested that vitamin A may be involved in spermatozoal maturation in the epididymis. We further addressed this question by quantifying retinol, retinyl esters, and retinoic acid isomers from perfused epididymal tissue, from rat testicular and epididymal spermatozoa, and from human ejaculate sperm. HPLC showed vitamin A levels to be higher in caput than in corpus or cauda tissue. Retinoic acid and 9-cis-retinoic acid were found to be graded from lowest levels in caput to highest …
Carbon, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Leaching Rates From Spartina Alterniflora Salt Marshes, R. Eugene Turner
Carbon, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Leaching Rates From Spartina Alterniflora Salt Marshes, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Annual carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus leachate rates from live Spartina alterniflora Loisel in a Louisiana (USA) salt marsh were estimated to be 200, 14, and 3 g m-2, respectively, and to peak in summer and higher salinit~es. Leachate losses of P, N and C are equivalent to a turnover of live plant tissues of 10, 17 and 49 d, respectively, when submerged, and 148, 250 and 721 d, respectively, when unsubmerged. Plant leachate losses during marsh submergence and non-submergence are nearly equal because release rates are 15x greater during submergence. Nitrogen and carbon concentrations relative to phosphorus are proportionately 4x …

Memory Bias And Body Image Disturbance In Normal Weight Body Dysphoric Women., Jeffrey Duane Baker
Memory Bias And Body Image Disturbance In Normal Weight Body Dysphoric Women., Jeffrey Duane Baker
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Body dysphoria is common in the general population and is thought to be associated with the development of eating disorders. Few studies have examined the role of cognitive processes in normal weight body dysphoric women. This study proposed an associative memory model of body dysphoria. The model predicted an increased memory bias for negative body words and increased body image disturbance in high body dysphoric subjects induced to a depressive mood. Based on the proposed model of body dysphoria, high dysphoric subjects were also predicted to give more depressive/negative body word associates on a word association task. Finally, the Pathfinder …

Seed Dormancy In Red Rice (Oryza Sativa): Changes In Embryo Ph And Metabolism During The Dormancy-Breaking Process., Steven Footitt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hydrated, dehulled, dormant seeds of red rice (Oryza sativa L.) were exposed to chemical treatments (nitrite, propionic acid, methyl propionate, propionaldehyde, and n-propanol) that saturate the dormancy-breaking response. Dormancy-breaking chemicals were (a) metabolized (n-propanol and propionate) by embryos in dormant seeds to weak acids; (b) decreased embryo pH; and (c) increased embryo (Fru 2,6-P$\sb2$) prior to dormancy-breaking. Embryo acidification, but not increased embryo (Fru 2,6-P$\sb2$), was associated with the chemical contact interval required for the onset of dormancy-breaking. During chemical contact, embryo (Fru 2,6-P$\sb2$) increased independent of dormancy-breaking and was inversely correlated with the elapsed time to 30% germination. On …

The Comparative Effects Of A Cognitive Learning Strategy And Movement Sequence Feedback During Motor Skill Acquisition., David Michael Cutton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an active, cognitive learning strategy and movement sequence feedback on learning the tennis forehand. Three experiments were conducted which involved manipulations of cognitive learning strategies and/or augmented, movement sequence feedback (AMSF). In Experiment 1 four groups of subjects (Advance Organizer (AO) strategy, Performer Self-Cueing (PSC) strategy, and two Control groups (differentiated by background)) performed 50 trials on 5 separate days in a pretest, posttest design, separated by 3 acquisition days. Subjects who used either strategy had significantly better outcome scores than the two Control groups. The PSC group's movement …

Wise Economies: Storytelling, Narrative Authority, And Brevity In The American Short Story, 1819-1980., Kirk Lee Curnutt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study proposes a new way of measuring brevity in the American short story. Since Edgar Allan Poe's definition of the tale, literary criticism has looked to various structural features within the text to define the elements that distinguish the short story from other prose genres like the novel. I argue that brevity is an essential feature of storytelling and suggest that its perception is molded and shaped by several historical factors. The phrase "wise economy" offers two ways of thinking about the conciseness of the form: it evokes a history of rhetorical economy central to the formation of a …

Learning Styles And Selected Demographic Characteristics Of Dislocated Workers., Samuel Lewis Harvill Sr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to: (1) describe dislocated workers in Louisiana by learning styles and demographics; (2) compare learning style by demographics; and, (3) determine if learning style is independent of occupational area. A simple random sample of 235 dislocated worker participants was drawn from participants served in the Louisiana Job Link Center at Louisiana State University during FY89 through FY91. Data were collected using two instruments. The researcher designed recording form was used to enter the demographic variables gender, ethnicity, age, educational level, and occupational areas (DOT) codes. The Gregorc Style Delineator identified the preferred learning style …
Autobiography As Repetition In The Works Of Walker Percy., Edward Joseph Dupuy
Autobiography As Repetition In The Works Of Walker Percy., Edward Joseph Dupuy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
While many critics have explored some connections between Walker Percy's work and the philosophies of Soren Kierkegaard and Martin Heidegger, none has examined that link in terms of autobiography and autobiographical theory. This study looks at both Percy's fiction and nonfiction in light of the category of repetition and its relation to autobiography. Following largely the work of William Spanos, the first chapter establishes a reading of autobiography as repetition--understood as inter esse, "being between" and concerned in time. It then discloses a link between such a view of autobiography and Percy's diagnostic use of the novel. The remainder of …
Woven Words: A Semiology Of Clothing In Medieval Texts., Fernando Luis Figueroa
Woven Words: A Semiology Of Clothing In Medieval Texts., Fernando Luis Figueroa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Much criticism in medieval studies has focused on Chrisitan allegory and its dissemination through Middle English poetry. Using recent insights into the nature of allegory in its medieval context, this study offers a new means of understanding allegory as it appears in the work of Chaucer and the Pearl-poet. Which ideas of figurality actually informed the works of these poets? The investigation into the influence of medieval "textuality" on Chaucer and the Pearl-poet has overlooked the image of the "veil" in the Middle Ages. This study asserts that instead of being a "flat" image, the veil provides us with a …
Predicting Performance On The National Dietetic Registration Exam., Rachel Martin Fournet
Predicting Performance On The National Dietetic Registration Exam., Rachel Martin Fournet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if relationships exist between student demographic or personal data, academic achievement and student perceptions of factors relative to predicting performance on the Registration Dietetic (R.D.) Exam. Perceptions of factors relative to predicting performance on the R.D. exam was also determined from undergraduate dietetic program directors, to explore the extent of agreement between students and educators. This information was used to develop a predictive model explaining a significant proportion of the variance in R.D. exam scores. A researcher designed questionnaire was administered to a nationwide random sample of first time eligible candidates for …
On The Characterization Of Finite Dimensional Hida Distributions., Kyoung Sim Lee
On The Characterization Of Finite Dimensional Hida Distributions., Kyoung Sim Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The mathematical framework of white noise analysis is based on an infinite dimensional analogue of the Schwartz distribution theory. The Lebesgue measure on $\IR\sp{k}$ is replaced with standard Gaussian measures $\mu$ on infinite dimensional spaces. There is an infinite dimensional analogue $({\cal E})\subset L\sp2({\cal E}\sp*,\mu)\subset({\cal E})\sp*$ of a Gel'fand triple ${\cal E}\subset E\subset{\cal E}\sp*$ which is obtained from ${\cal S}(\IR\sp{k})\subset L\sp2(\IR\sp{k})\subset{\cal S}\sp*(\IR\sp{k})$ in a general setup. There are spaces $({\cal E}\sp\beta),({\cal E}\sp\beta)\sp*, \beta\in\lbrack 0,1)$ with $({\cal E}\sp\beta)\subset({\cal E})\subset L\sp2({\cal E}\sp*,\mu)\subset({\cal E})\sp*\subset({\cal E}\sp\beta)\sp*.$. The compositions of Schwartz distributions and Gaussian random variables have been discussed. A new Gel'fand triple ${\cal H}(\IR\sp{k})\subset{\cal …
