Imagining Workers: The Working-Class Presence In Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Lynn Watson
Imagining Workers: The Working-Class Presence In Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Lynn Watson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines how late nineteenth-century American realist and naturalist narratives defuse the working-class drive for class self-determination and political power. The texts examined are Rebecca Harding Davis's "Life in the Iron Mills" (1861), Elizabeth Stuart Phelps's The Silent Partner (1871), Henry James's The Princess Casamassima (1886), William Dean Howells's A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890) and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie (1900). Each work is examined in the context of a specific proletarian insurgency that was taking place at roughly the same time, and sometimes the same place, in which the author was writing. Each text bears the impress of …
Bombesin-Induced Hypothermia At Normal Ambient Temperatures: Contribution Of The Sympathetic Nervous System., John Christopher Barton
Bombesin-Induced Hypothermia At Normal Ambient Temperatures: Contribution Of The Sympathetic Nervous System., John Christopher Barton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bombesin is a tetradecapeptide first isolated from frog skin. This peptide has potent effects on core body temperature of rats when administered centrally. Bombesin-induced hypothermia at normal ambient temperatures appears to be dependent upon some pre-existent condition which may be related to nutritional status. Four experiments were conducted to examine if the pre-existing condition for bombesin-induced hypothermia at normal ambient temperatures is primarily related to modulation of sympathetic nervous system activation. Experiment I demonstrated that central bombesin resulted in hypothermia in rats tested at normal ambient temperatures under conditions of ad-libitum access to food only when injected peripherally with the …
An Investigation Of Behavior Problems Of Children With Down Syndrome And Their Relationship To Life Events., David Alan Coe
An Investigation Of Behavior Problems Of Children With Down Syndrome And Their Relationship To Life Events., David Alan Coe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Behavior problems of 44 children with Down Syndrome between the ages of 6 and 15 and 44 controls without mental retardation matched for age, sex and socioeconomic status were compared by means of mother and teacher ratings. Ratings from both sources indicated that children with Down Syndrome had more behavior problems, in particular attention deficit, noncompliance, thought disorder and social withdrawal. Thirty one percent of these children were identified by mothers as having a significant behavior problem compared with 58% of those rated by teachers. In both cases, Down Syndrome behavior problem prevalence exceeded that for controls by a three …
Factors Affecting Intended Self-Referral To An Employee Assistance Program., Paul Richard Damiano
Factors Affecting Intended Self-Referral To An Employee Assistance Program., Paul Richard Damiano
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Using data from 256 subjects from three organizations which all had employee assistance programs (EAP), this study explored factors hypothesized to affect the likelihood for employees to self-refer to the EAP. Using both correlational data and a 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 repeated measures ANOVA, it was found that perceived confidentiality, reputation of the program, perceived problem seriousness, and type of problem (job, financial, health, psychological, or relationship) were significantly related to the intent to self-refer. There was also evidence that perceived controllability of the problem and a job performance decrement influenced the propensity to self-refer. An additional …
The Effect Of Time Pressure On Auditor Attention To Red Flags In A Dual-Task Environment., Robert Lance Braun
The Effect Of Time Pressure On Auditor Attention To Red Flags In A Dual-Task Environment., Robert Lance Braun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Motivated by recent attention given to the independent auditor's role in detecting red flags, this dissertation investigates the effect of time pressure on auditors' attention to red flags in the auditing environment. In so doing, the earlier work of McDaniel (1990) investigating the effects of time pressure on the auditor's ability to execute auditing tests of details is extended. Authoritative sources indicating that red flag detection is performed as a subsidiary task in a multi-task auditing environment are presented. The Easterbrook hypothesis, which holds that a progressive reduction in the range of cue utilization accompanies increases in arousal, provides theoretical …
Effects Of Threat-Related Emotional Information In A Lexical Decision Task: Examination Of Cognitive And Motor Performance., Sheryl Rene Jackson
Effects Of Threat-Related Emotional Information In A Lexical Decision Task: Examination Of Cognitive And Motor Performance., Sheryl Rene Jackson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, attention has been given to the cognitive processing of aversive emotional, or threat-related, information. Although investigations have often focused on anxiety disordered individuals, it is suggested that examination of "normal" individuals with varying levels of anxiety will increase the understanding of the cognitive processing of aversive emotional, or threat-related, information. It has been hypothesized that high anxious individuals exhibit an attentional bias toward threat-related emotional information. The response of low anxious individuals to threat-related information is unclear. Some evidence suggests that non-anxiety disordered individuals employ a mechanism that inhibits or interferes with the processing of threat-related, emotional information. The …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Style And Sense Of Autonomy In Differentially Effective Schools., Corinne Falterman Hebert
Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Style And Sense Of Autonomy In Differentially Effective Schools., Corinne Falterman Hebert
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was threefold. Phase I involved a reconstruction of the Change Facilitator Style of Principal (CFSP) instrument developed by Bost and Ruch (1986). Phase II was an ex post facto study that investigated teachers' perceptions of their principals' change facilitator style and of their autonomy, and Phase III encompassed the collection of qualitative data. The questionnaire originally developed by Bost and Ruch (1985) had some inadequate psychometric properties. These inadequacies were uncovered and further explored by examining the frequency distributions of the items from a previous study, and by conducting a construct validation of the instrument. …
Selective Information Processing Of Body Size And Food Related Stimuli In Women Who Are Preoccupied With Body Size., Richard Daniel Fuller
Selective Information Processing Of Body Size And Food Related Stimuli In Women Who Are Preoccupied With Body Size., Richard Daniel Fuller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Overconcern or preoccupation with body size and weight is a central psychopathological feature of the eating disorders. The overconcern with body size is considered to be a function of fear of weight gain or "fear of fatness". Cognitive theories of psychopathology have hypothesized that fear results in an increased activation of cognitive structures associated with the feared object. This increased activation (priming) is hypothesized to enhance the processing of information related to the feared object. This study tested this hypothesis using a lexical decision task. Individuals with extreme body size preoccupation were evaluated for a selective information processing of body …

Study Of Shape Coexistence In Even-Even Neutron Deficient Mercury Isotopes., Paresh K. Joshi
Study Of Shape Coexistence In Even-Even Neutron Deficient Mercury Isotopes., Paresh K. Joshi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nuclei in the neutron deficient Z $\le$ 82 region have attracted considerable attention since research at UNISOR first observed the nearly degenerate nuclear shape coexistence in $\sp{184-188}$Hg. The deformed prolate shapes in this region are believed to result from a proton pair excitation into the $h\sb{9/2}$ shell model orbital which lies above the closed proton shell at Z = 82. In the region far from stability (where the neutron shell is half filled), the degeneracy of the shape coexistence is maximum. These prolate deformed intruder states in the Hg isotopes have been identified in radioactive decay studies for neutron numbers …
Transcriptional Cis-Regulatory Elements And Trans-Factors Of A Gene For The Seed Storage Protein Beta-Phaseolin From Common Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris)., Yasushi Kawagoe
Transcriptional Cis-Regulatory Elements And Trans-Factors Of A Gene For The Seed Storage Protein Beta-Phaseolin From Common Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris)., Yasushi Kawagoe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In many dicotyledons, the nutrient reserves are stored in the cotyledons. Phaseolin, 7S globulin, is the major seed protein from common bean Phaseolus vulgaris. In vitro transcription assays and gene transfer studies indicate that phaseolin gene expression is regulated primarily at the transcriptional level. In this dissertation, I studied cis- and trans-acting factors that may play a role in the transcriptional regulation of the $\beta$-phaseolin gene. Gel mobility shift and exonuclease III protection assays identified four distinct DNA binding proteins, CAN, AG-1, CA-1, and TATA-box binding protein. Three CANNTG motifs, CACGTG ($-$248/$-$243), CACCTG ($-$163/$-$158), and CATATG ($-$100/$-$95), were found to …

Preliminary Culture Studies With The Common Snapping Turtle, Chelydra Serpentina: Growth, Nutrition, And Stocking Density., Maxwell Hayden Mayeaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to: (1) determine the effects of stocking density and dietary protein:energy ratio on survival, growth, feed consumption, feed conversion, lipo-somatic index, dress-out percentage, and productive protein value of common snapping turtles; and (2) determine the fatty acid composition of muscle, liver, and fat bodies of wild common snapping turtles and common snapping turtles fed a diet of known fatty acid composition. Hatchling common snapping turtles, Chelydra serpentina, were stocked at five or 10 animals per container (29 and 58 turtles/m$\sp2$, respectively), and fed one of seven prepared diets. Six diets contained 30, 35, or 40% protein …
Finite Element Analysis Of Damage And Elastic-Plastic Behavior Of Metal Matrix Composites., Taehyo Park
Finite Element Analysis Of Damage And Elastic-Plastic Behavior Of Metal Matrix Composites., Taehyo Park
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Damage and elasto-plastic analysis is of particular importance to metal matrix composites since the onset of damage and plastic yielding begins very early in the loading process as compared to the composites ultimate strength. Two types of damage models are proposed using micromechanical model. A finite element analysis is presented for quantifying damage and predicting the failure loads of the center-cracked laminate metal matrix composite plates. Both the overall damage model which accounts for all types of damages as a single damage variable and the local damage model which uses the local constitutive damage relations for each of the matrix …
Pest Identification And Management In Tomatillo In Louisiana., Can Huy Ngo
Pest Identification And Management In Tomatillo In Louisiana., Can Huy Ngo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In anticipation of the regional demand for tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.) for the fresh market and sauce industry, four years of research trials (1990-1993) showed a significant adaptation of tomatillo to Louisiana planting conditions where, like tomato, it performed best in the cooler temperatures of spring and early fall. Field surveys indicated that virus diseases were major constraints on production. A foliar mosaic and yellow mottle found commonly affecting plants was caused by Physalis mosaic virus (PhyMV), identified by host reaction, electron microscopy, serology, and dsRNA analysis. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) were also found. …

A Step In The "Wright" Direction: Mapping The Structural Locations Of The "New Class"., David Emile Maurer
A Step In The "Wright" Direction: Mapping The Structural Locations Of The "New Class"., David Emile Maurer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Stratification researchers have directed their efforts toward tracing the emergence of and speculating about the composition of a New Class which is forming as American capitalism expands. In their endeavors, three sets of theories occupy center stage: Expert New Class theory, Managerial New Class theory, and New Working Class theory. To empirically test each of these theories, the 1991-1992 Class and Class Consciousness data set were employed. Of the three sets of theories, Managerial New Class models offer the most promise for future research and explaining the changing nature of the American social structure. Moderate support is also provided for …
La Reconstruction De La Memoire Et Le Traumatisme De La Guerre Dans Le Roman Francais., Frederic Marie Pallez
La Reconstruction De La Memoire Et Le Traumatisme De La Guerre Dans Le Roman Francais., Frederic Marie Pallez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The strategy used in the understanding of war and the process of writing are identical: each implies a will to comprehend the situation at hand and a failure to dominate it completely. Among the "resistances" that tend to challenge the representation of war are the psychoanalytical notions of Repetition Compulsion and of Overdetermination. In the text both display symptoms of the writer's trauma after his actual or vicarious participation in conflict. The experience of war as a disturbance of the psyche can be read in both personal and collective memory, This tendency to sublimate the trauma of war through group …

An Ethnographically Informed Case Study Of An Art Teacher Using Right Brain Drawing Instruction., Sara Jan Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The first and central purpose of this study was to identify and describe one high school art teacher's basis for incorporating into the curriculum right-brain drawing instruction based on Edwards' (1989) book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. The second was to provide art educators with preliminary information about the right-brain theory's popularity that might assist them in future research on a larger scale. Computer searches of ERIC and PSYCH INFO were conducted to locate related research findings dealing with hemispheric function. The empirical findings were analyzed and compared to rationales for employing right-brain teaching strategies. The research …
Electrophysiological Responses Of Olfactory Receptor And Bulb Neurons To Stimulus Mixtures And To Their Individual Components In The Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Jiesheng Kang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Both electro-olfactogram and integrated multiunit receptor responses of populations of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) clearly showed that responses to complex mixtures were predictable. Results demonstrated that receptor sites for basic and acidic amino acids, respectively, are independent from those for neutral amino acids and multiple receptor site types with highly overlapping specificities exist for amino acids within each group. Results also confirmed that one mechanism for synergism is the simultaneous activation of relatively independent receptor sites by the components in a mixture, and there was no evidence of mixture suppression. Single ORNs recorded in vivo responded to stimuli with either …

The purpose of this study was to follow and describe the cognitive processes of five prospective elementary teachers as they engaged in the formation of units and to examine the role of the unit concept as a possible link between the whole number and rational number domains. An attempt was made to gain an understanding of how the students constructed units and whether or not their attention to and understanding of the unit concept would increase their understanding of rational number concepts and operations. The rational number domain is one that causes great difficulties for students and their teachers. The …
Statistical Process Control Using On-Line Sensors., Wu-Shong Jwo
Statistical Process Control Using On-Line Sensors., Wu-Shong Jwo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The traditional control chart method of SPC is a popular tool for monitoring a production process. The method involves randomly drawing a sample of finished items from the process at every equal-time interval to check the product quality and assess the process condition. Because of recent technological advances in computer automation, many kinds of on-line inspection and monitoring equipment, such as sensors, have been developed. This research proposes a two-phase method to monitor the production process during manufacturing operations. Basically, this method is a combination of an on-line sensor and a control-chart method. In the first phase, if the total …
Strategic Issue Interpretation And Response In The Restaurant Industry., Scott David Julian
Strategic Issue Interpretation And Response In The Restaurant Industry., Scott David Julian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents a model of strategic issue management that focuses on the mediational role that interpretation has between monitoring and scanning the environment and organizational response. Hypotheses concerning the relationships between several dimensions of issue interpretation and several dimensions of organizational issue response are posited. The strategic issue of consumer nutrition awareness within the restaurant industry is targeted, and a research methodology constructed for testing the hypotheses. Urgency, Understanding, and Capability all had significant relationships with the response variables of Magnitude, Locus, and Activeness, with Understanding's relationship tending to be curvilinear. No variables had a significant effect on Immediacy, …
Structural Results For Matroids., Sandra Reuben Kingan
Structural Results For Matroids., Sandra Reuben Kingan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation solves some problems involving the structure of matroids. In Chapter 2, the class of binary matroids with no minors isomorphic to the prism graph, its dual, and the binary affine cube is completely determined. This class contains the infinite family of matroids obtained by sticking together a wheel and the Fano matroid across a triangle, and then deleting an edge of the triangle. In Chapter 3, we extend a graph result by D. W. Hall to matroids. Hall proved that if a simple, 3-connected graph has a $K\sb5$-minor, then it must also have a $K\sb{3,3}$-minor, the only exception …

Production Capabilities And Economic Potential Of An Australian Redclaw Crayfish (Cherax Quadricarinatus) Hatchery In The United States., Paul Boyce Medley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In most of the United States, overwintering redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) is necessary because they cannot withstand winter temperatures. Consequently, hatcheries are required to produce juveniles for pond stocking. The objectives of this study were: (1) identify biological factors affecting production of juvenile redclaw, (2) determine production capabilities of a redclaw crayfish hatchery, and (3) determine the economic potential of redclaw hatcheries. Experiments were designed to assess fecundity and factors influencing spawning such as stocking density, male/female weight, diet, mortality, and cannibalism. Research was also conducted to determine egg development time, hatching success, and juvenile growth and survival. Pooled survival …
Determining Process Target Value And Ordering Policies In Two-Echelon Hierarchy Production System., Jinshyang Roan
Determining Process Target Value And Ordering Policies In Two-Echelon Hierarchy Production System., Jinshyang Roan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Selection of the mean (target value) for a production process is a classical problem in quality control. Basically, a process mean is selected based on a balance between production cost and economical consequences associated with conforming items and nonconforming items. The process mean affects many production decisions. In particular, because it determines the process conforming and yields rates, it affects the production setup policy. These production decisions also affect the raw material requirement and, thus, its procurement policy when the raw material is supplied by outside vendors. Consequently, process mean, production and raw material procurement policies should be jointly determined …
The Effects Of Computer-Intensive Algebra On Students' Understanding Of The Function Concept., Brian Richard O'Callaghan
The Effects Of Computer-Intensive Algebra On Students' Understanding Of The Function Concept., Brian Richard O'Callaghan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the Computer-Intensive Algebra (CIA) and traditional algebra (TA) curricula on students' understanding of the function concept. CIA was developed recently in an effort to address some of the deficiencies in TA, namely, its over-emphasis of procedural skills and lack of attention to concepts and problem solving (Fey, 1992; Kieran, 1990). The major features of this innovative curriculum are (a) a problem solving approach based on the modelling and exploration of realistic problem situations, (b) an emphasis on conceptual knowledge, and (c) the extensive use of technology. This study hypothesizes …
