Control Of One Percent Yield Offset In Reaction Injection Molding., Samuel Mills Peebles
Control Of One Percent Yield Offset In Reaction Injection Molding., Samuel Mills Peebles
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Reaction Injection Molding produces parts that must meet property specifications to be useful. For example a car bumper must have a high impact strength to prevent the car from being damaged during a collision. This research presents a control algorithm that can be implemented to control the part properties of reaction injection molded parts. The part property need not be measurable on line if the property is affected by the reaction conditions within the mold. This is an important feature of the algorithm since many important properties, such as yield strength, cannot be measured without destroying the part. The algorithm …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotion and blood pressure levels and variability for 80 Caucasian subjects between the ages of 30 and 65 matched on gender. The subjects were divided into four groups: normotensives, untreated borderline essential hypertensives, treated mild essential hypertensives, and Type II diabetic hypertensives. Subjects completed five psychological measures: the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI); State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait anxiety (STAI-Tanx); State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-trait anger (STAXI-Tang); the ratio of anger-in to anger-out (STAXI-IO); and the Autonomic Nervous System Response Inventory (ANSRI). Subjects then recorded their home blood pressures seven times throughout the …
The Information Content Of Dividend Initiations., Yangpin Shen
The Information Content Of Dividend Initiations., Yangpin Shen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation is to reexamine the dividend information hypothesis and to provide additional evidence on the nature of the information revealed by dividend initiations. Evidence on (1) announcing firms' stock price reactions, (2) analyst earnings forecast revisions for announcing firms, (3) rivals' stock price reactions, and (4) analyst earnings forecast revisions for rivals will be presented. On average, the stock market reacts positively to the announcement of dividend initiations and the degree of this reaction can be significantly explained by three information proxies: dividend yield, firm size, and trading volume. Moreover, I find that dividend initiation announcement …
Explicit Memory Bias For Body-Related Stimuli In Eating Disorders., Shannon Buckles Sebastian
Explicit Memory Bias For Body-Related Stimuli In Eating Disorders., Shannon Buckles Sebastian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This investigation studied the presence of an explicit memory bias for emotional body related stimuli in patients diagnosed with an eating disorder. Explicit memory refers to the recall of stimuli previously presented. Explicit memory tasks are thought to reflect cognitive elaboration mechanisms. Research on depressed patients has found a bias for recalling negatively valenced information and/or a bias against recalling positively valenced information. This study sought to extend this type of memory bias research to eating disorder patients. Three groups were examined, a group of clinical eating disordered women (n = 30), a group of weight preoccupied non-eating disordered individuals …
Controls On The Sedimentary And Subsidence History Of An Active Plate Margin: An Example From The Tonga Arc (Southwest Pacific), P. D. Clift
Faculty Publications
Provides a record of the sedimentary evolution of the active margin of the Indo-Australian Plate from late Eocene time to the present. Facies analyses of the sediments, coupled with interpretations of downhole Formation MicroScanner logs, allow the complete sedimentary and subsidence history of each site to be reconstructed. The forearc region of the Tofua Arc (Site 841) can be seen to have experienced an initial period of tectonic subsidence dating from 3.5 Ma. Subsidence has probably been gradual since that time, with possible phases of accelerated subsidence, starting at 16.2 and 10.0 Ma. The Tonga Platform (Site 840) records only …

Characteristics And Cost Analysis Of Injuries & Illnesses In Poultry Processing Operations In Louisiana, C. Vellala, John C. Pine, Brian D. Marx, A. James Farr, Frederick E. Sistler, F. Aghazadeh
Faculty Publications
In this report, compensable cases of worker injury reported to the Louisiana Office of Workers Compensation have been analyzed for the poultry processing operations for the period 1985 to 1992. The number of employees has steadily increased over the years (1,196 in 1985 and 1,928 in 1990). The incidence rates (per 100 full time employees per year), however, did not reveal an increasing trend, but was highest in 1987 (3.25), followed by 3.11 in 1990. Forty-one percent of the compensable cases were workers employed less than one year on the job. Sprains and strains accounted for the largest percentage of …
Optimal Preventive Maintenance Strategies For A Production System Subject To Random Shocks., Frances Fertitta Barbera
Optimal Preventive Maintenance Strategies For A Production System Subject To Random Shocks., Frances Fertitta Barbera
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The failure rate of production equipment is usually increasing as wear accumulates with usage. An improved preventive maintenance approach is accomplished through predictive maintenance, where an indicator of wear, like vibration or heat, is measured and used to determine the optimal time of an adjustment (or maintenance) such as realignment, oil change or replacing seals. The state of the unit is restored into the same original "as new" state both after adjustment or failure (followed by a repair). This research will develop mathematical models for a single and two unit production system. In the development of the one unit model, …
Does Caffeine Have An Ergogenic Benefit On Low-Intensity Exercise Performance In A Warm Environment?, Barry Steven Cohen
Does Caffeine Have An Ergogenic Benefit On Low-Intensity Exercise Performance In A Warm Environment?, Barry Steven Cohen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effect of caffeine ingestion upon endurance performance while walking at 45% VO$\sb{2\rm max}$ in a warm environment (27$\sp\circ$C, 48% rh) was examined. Eight moderately trained subjects (aged 21-25 years) walked on a treadmill on 4 separate occasions until exhaustion under 4 different treatment regimens. Two of the treatments consisted of caffeine-containing beverages, while the other 2 included non-caffeine-containing beverages. One hour prior to the start of exercise, the subjects consumed a GatorPro drink with either 5 mg/kg of caffeine, if caffeine was the randomized drink, or placebo (flour). At the start of exercise and every half hour until exhaustion, …
Hemispheric Function In Motor Skill Learning., Malcolm Maccoll Fairweather
Hemispheric Function In Motor Skill Learning., Malcolm Maccoll Fairweather
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Neuropsychological research examining hemispheric function has recently revealed important, and previously unrecognized, perceptual-motor processing advantages in the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This research has also highlighted verbal-motor disruption problems in the performance of motor skills that may be predictable given an understanding of hemispheric specialization and function. Applied research examining methodology to optimize brain functioning in the learning of motor skills has ignored this neuropsychological research. Instead, applied research interest has focussed upon an individual difference phenomenon known as hemisphericity, which affects approximately 25% of the population. An individual presenting hemisphericity appears biased toward a left or …
Advanced Gravitational Radiation Transducers With Small Mass And Ultra-Low Temperature Squids., Ziniu Geng
Advanced Gravitational Radiation Transducers With Small Mass And Ultra-Low Temperature Squids., Ziniu Geng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The transducer and SQUID are two major components for a resonant-mass gravitational wave antenna. They must always have high sensitivity and low noise. In this work, a two-mode superconducting inductive transducer for a three-mode gravitational wave bar antenna is designed. The construction and tests of small mass resonators that form the transducer are described. The experiments and test results of commercial dc SQUIDs at ultra-low temperature are discussed in detail. Special problems arise when SQUIDs are tested at ultra-low temperature in vacuum. We address the problems and provide proper solutions. Our experiments show that the dc SQUID made by Quantum …

Tracking Dynamic Features In Image Sequences., Sankar Krishnamurthy
Tracking Dynamic Features In Image Sequences., Sankar Krishnamurthy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation deals with detecting and tracking dynamic features in image sequences using digital image analysis algorithms. The tracking problem is complicated in oceanographic images due to the dynamic nature of the features. Specifically, the features of interest move, change size and shape. In the first part of the dissertation, the design and development of a new segmentation algorithm, Histogram-based Morphological Edge Detector (HMED), is presented. Mathematical morphology has been used in the past to develop efficient and robust edge detectors. But these morphological edge detectors do not extract weak gradient edge pixels, and they introduce spurious edge pixels. The …

Effects Of Chromium Picolinate On Growth And Body Composition In The Rat., Deborah Lynn Hasten
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several human and animal studies of chromium (Cr) supplementation in the form of Cr picolinate (CrPic) have reported increases in lean body mass, often with concurrent body fat decreases. This 12-week study examined the effects of six dietary levels of CrPic (0, 75, 150, 300, 600, 1500 ppb Cr) upon the growth and body composition of the rat. Ninety male Harlan Sprague-Dawley outbred weanling rats arrived in three groups of 30 animals (referred to as Blocks 1, 2, and 3). Five animals from each block were assigned to each treatment, resulting in a 6 x 3 (treatment x block) Randomized …
Molecular Marker Linkage Mapping In Southern Pine (Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine)., Thomas Lester Kubisiak
Molecular Marker Linkage Mapping In Southern Pine (Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine)., Thomas Lester Kubisiak
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this work was to develop molecular markers for use in a backcross breeding program to speed the introgression of genes influencing rapid early height growth (EHG) from slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii) into longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.). The efficacy of molecular markers for genetic mapping in the Pinaceae was determined in segregating haploid and diploid populations. Initial screening for genetic polymorphisms was conducted using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. Using DNAs obtained from haploid megagametophytes, a RAPD-based genetic map for longleaf pine clone 3-356 (16 linkage groups and 6 pairs (133 markers) …

Plots were thinned to a density of 731 trees per hectare or left unthinned, at a density of 2990 trees per hectare. The plots were left unfertilized or fertilized with 744 kg per hectare of diammonium triple superphosphate was …
Interactions Of Mouse And Bovine Preimplantation Embryos Prior To And After The In Vitro Developmental Block Stage., Leyi Li
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of post-block mouse and bovine embryos on the development of pre-block embryos around the in vitro developmental block stage. The effect of the post-block embryos on the development of the pre-block embryos was evaluated in culture, in chimeras and in cytoplasmic hybrid embryos. The results indicate that post-block embryos were able to stimulate the development of the pre-block embryos in culture. The stimulatory effect of the post-block mouse and bovine embryos was found not to be species-specific and was synergistic with that of bovine granulosa cells. Chimeric parthenogenetic bovine …
Palmerston, Parliament And Peking: The Melbourne Ministry And The Opium Crisis, 1835-1840., Glenn Paul Melancon
Palmerston, Parliament And Peking: The Melbourne Ministry And The Opium Crisis, 1835-1840., Glenn Paul Melancon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
"Palmerston, Parliament and Peking" is a revisionist work designed to challenge the prevailing economic interpretations of the first Opium War, 1839-1842. Orthodox historiography considers early nineteenth-century Britain as a modern, industrial society and argues that its Government needed to respond violently to the Chinese authorities' suppression of the opium trade in order to protect and expand a lucrative endeavor. Indian opium sales generated revenue for the British-run government in Bengal and paid for Chinese tea, a highly prized commodity in Great Britain. British industrialists demanded war to end the Chinese Government's restrictions on trade, known as the Canton system, thus …
A Confederate Education In The New South: Southern Academia And The Idea Of Progress In The Nineteenth Century., Danny Ray Frost
A Confederate Education In The New South: Southern Academia And The Idea Of Progress In The Nineteenth Century., Danny Ray Frost
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The idea of progress inspired former Confederate officers who entered academia to transform Southern higher education from its antebellum classical and republican orientation to a postbellum focus on science and utility. Defeat taught these academics that Southern institutions had failed to supply graduates with the scientific skills necessary to compete economically, industrially, and militarily with the North. They concluded that the Confederacy's collapse demonstrated the necessity of abandoning the republican conception of progress, characterized by fears of cyclical decay, in favor of the modern idea of progress which emphasized inevitable and unlimited material and social improvement. Confederate-veterans-turned academics believed scientific …
Development Of Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectroscopic And Imaging Methods., Youngil Lee
Development Of Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectroscopic And Imaging Methods., Youngil Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of $\sp1$H and $\sp{13}$C nuclei in molecular species is very common as is solid-state NMR of $\sp{13}$C in a wide variety of substances. Yet many nuclei remain little studied by conventional NMR techniques, for example $\sp2$H, $\sp{11}$B, $\sp{14}$N, $\sp{79}$Br, $\sp{81}$Br, and $\sp{93}$Nb. One method for their study is nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). Briefly, the reason that quadrupolar nuclei are difficult to study with conventional NMR techniques is the exceedingly large line widths these nuclei exhibit in high magnetic fields. The first part of my dissertation deals with NQR spectroscopic techniques developed to obtain structural information …

The tests were conducted in a silty-loam soil with the following characteristics: bulk density 1115.2 kg/m$\sp3$, moisture …
Breeding Wheat For Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Streak Caused By Xanthomonas Campestris Pv. Translucens., Barry Lawrence Tillman
Breeding Wheat For Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Streak Caused By Xanthomonas Campestris Pv. Translucens., Barry Lawrence Tillman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bacterial leaf streak or black chaff caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens (Xct) can cause yield loss in wheat, especially in warm, high rainfall environments. Bactericidal chemicals have not been effective in controlling the disease, however, host resistance to leaf streak may be an effective control measure. Studies were conducted in the field and greenhouse to determine the relationship between the black chaff and leaf streak symptoms caused by Xct, to quantify yield loss, to calculate the heritability of leaf streak reaction and to evaluate germplasm for resistance to leaf streak. The results showed that 'Florida 304' is very susceptible …
Critical Chorology And Peasant Production: Small Farm Forestry In Hojancha, Guanacaste, Costa Rica., Michael Stephen Yoder
Critical Chorology And Peasant Production: Small Farm Forestry In Hojancha, Guanacaste, Costa Rica., Michael Stephen Yoder
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The "new regional geography" is an attempt to fuse traditional regional geography's concerns with cultural and environmental uniqueness of places, with political economy's regard for the nature of global and local structures guiding resource allocation. The approach infuses chorology with theory, and political economy with place-specific empirical research. Most studies exemplifying the new approach have been of industrial localities of Europe and North America. This dissertation is a case study of regional transformation in a Third World locality, the canton of Hojancha, in Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula. The approach utilized is "critical chorology," a variant of the new regional geography …

The purpose of the present dissertation was to examine some of the perceptions younger adults have about the elderly, communication behaviors during a cross-generational interaction, and evaluations of the interaction. The present investigation used an experimental design that included the following two independent variables: (1) gender and (2) amount of interaction (or contact) a younger adult has with elderly people. Subjects were categorized into high, medium, or low contact groups based on self-reports. The study consisted of an initial survey, an experiment (younger subjects interviewed by an elderly confederate), and a postinteraction survey. The gender and contact factors were investigated …
A Specification Environment That Supports The Prototyping Of Distributed Systems Using An Object-Oriented Model., Abbas Dehkhoda
A Specification Environment That Supports The Prototyping Of Distributed Systems Using An Object-Oriented Model., Abbas Dehkhoda
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
High-speed computer networking, interactive service, and incremental growth for computing are some of the motivations for developing a distributed system. Despite the inherent benefits of a distributed system, the development of software support is more difficult for distributed systems than for sequential systems. In either case, difficulties may arise from the communication problems between two groups of people with different backgrounds trying to formulate requirements for the system. This process depends on feedback and may take many iterations to converge. Customers can usually recognize the features they need when they start using a system, which makes prototyping an important tool …

Charles-Auguste de Beriot (1802-70) was a Belgian violinist, composer, and teacher. He was trained in his youth in Belgium and in the early 1820s travelled to Paris and studied briefly with the noted teacher Pierre Baillot at the Paris Conservatoire. He then embarked upon a solo career and from 1829 to 1836 he toured with the famed opera singer Maria Malibran, whom he married in 1836. In 1842, after declining an offer to replace Baillot at the Paris Conservatoire, Beriot accepted a position at the Brussels Conservatoire. He remained there until his retirement due to failing eyesight in 1852, and …
Effects Of Heat, Lactic Acid, And Modified Atmosphere Packaging On Listeria Monocytogenes On Cooked Crawfish Tail Meat., Warren Joseph Dorsa
Effects Of Heat, Lactic Acid, And Modified Atmosphere Packaging On Listeria Monocytogenes On Cooked Crawfish Tail Meat., Warren Joseph Dorsa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The generation time of L. monocytogenes was calculated to be 72.2, 28.5, 17.01, and 6.9 h on crawfish tail meat held at 0, 4, 6, and 12$\sp\circ$C, respectively. Potassium sorbate (PS) (0.3%) spray treatments on crawfish held at 4$\sp\circ$C, extended the lag phase of the bacterium. However, once exponential growth began, a generation time not significantly different (P $>$ 0.05) than that of untreated crawfish was observed. Samples sprayed with 0.3% citric acid (CA) and held at 4$\sp\circ$C supported growth of the bacterium equally well as that of untreated samples. Thermal inactivation of L. monocytogenes using a three neck …
