Interactions Between Fusarium Oxysporum F. Sp. Lycopersici And Nonpathogenic Strains Of Fusarium Oxysporum., Monica Michelle Lear
Interactions Between Fusarium Oxysporum F. Sp. Lycopersici And Nonpathogenic Strains Of Fusarium Oxysporum., Monica Michelle Lear
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Race 1 isolates collected from tomato roots were used to develop an orange mutant of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) for use in competitive infection tests against nonpathogenic F. oxysporum isolates. Eighty one color mutants were induced by exposure to ultraviolet light. The mutant ORA-22 retained pathogenicity and growth habit similar to the wild-type. Preliminary competitive infection tests indicated differences within the nonpathogenic population in the ability to suppress or enhance infection by FOL orange mutant ORA-22. Four vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) were tested to determine if competitive infection ability was associated with VCG designation. Results from these tests …
Geologic Framework And Consolidation Settlement Potential Of The Lafourche Delta, Topstratum Valley Fill; Implications For Wetland Loss In Terrebonne And Lafourche Parishes, Louisiana., Gerald Joseph Kuecher
Geologic Framework And Consolidation Settlement Potential Of The Lafourche Delta, Topstratum Valley Fill; Implications For Wetland Loss In Terrebonne And Lafourche Parishes, Louisiana., Gerald Joseph Kuecher
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Wetland loss in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, Louisiana, largely results from two subsurface processes: (1) consolidation of recently deposited deltaic materials; and (2) active faulting. The impact of each is addressed. Cryogenic sampling techniques were utilized to obtain in-situ sediment samples from seven (7) modern deltaic environments in the greater Mississippi River delta plain. Consolidometer testing identifies peaty facies as most-subject to consolidation settlement, followed by prodelta and bay mud facies. Sandy facies from the other tested environments are not subject to significant consolidation settlement. Compression index values generated here are used to calculate settlement in a vertical stack at …
Biochemical Oxygen Demand Removal Reaction Rate Constants In Microbial Rock Plant Filter Treatment Systems., Bhaskar Kura
Biochemical Oxygen Demand Removal Reaction Rate Constants In Microbial Rock Plant Filter Treatment Systems., Bhaskar Kura
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Microbial Rock Plant Filters (MRPFs) are capable of treating municipal wastewaters, particularly for the removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in an economic manner. There is no consensus on proper design for these treatment systems due to the limited performance data available on these recently developed systems (Reed, 1993). Variability of the BOD removal reaction rate constant is an important observation which has bearing on the design of these systems. Variability of BOD removal reaction rate constant along the filter length was modeled as a function of the variable microbial activity. The microbial activity was estimated using a modified fluorescein …
A Paley-Wiener Theorem For All Two And Three-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups., Robert Reeve Park
A Paley-Wiener Theorem For All Two And Three-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups., Robert Reeve Park
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A Paley-Wiener Theorem for all connected, simply-connected two and three-step nilpotent Lie groups is proved. If f $\epsilon \ L\sbsp{c}{\infty}({G}),$ where G is a connected, simply-connected two or three-step nilpotent Lie group such that the operator-valued Fourier transform $\\varphi(\pi)$ = 0 for all $\pi$ in E, a subset of G of positive Plancherel measure, then it is shown that f = 0 a. e. on G. The proof uses representation-theoretic methods from Kirillov theory for nilpotent Lie groups, and uses an integral formula for the operator-valued Fourier transform $\\varphi(\pi)$. It is also shown by example that the condition that G …
The Role Of Infaunal And Epifaunal Suspension Feeding Macrofauna On Rates Of Benthic-Pelagic Coupling In A Southeastern Estuary., Christine Miller-Way
The Role Of Infaunal And Epifaunal Suspension Feeding Macrofauna On Rates Of Benthic-Pelagic Coupling In A Southeastern Estuary., Christine Miller-Way
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research investigated the effects of two suspension feeding bivalves, the infaunal Rangia cuneata, and the epifaunal Crassostrea virginica, on benthic-pelagic coupling in Fourleague Bay, LA, a river-dominated estuary. A continuous-flow microcosm system was developed to overcome recognized limitations of batch methodology and to facilitate manipulations designed to investigate the ecological role of benthic macrofauna. Experiments comparing traditional batch methodology to continuous-flow methodology indicated that rates of benthic processes were consistently greater when measured using continuous-flow methodology. Examinations of concentrations indicated that differences were due to concentration gradients which departed from ambient over time in the batch cores. Over an …
Employer Recruitment And Job Matching Theories: The Effects Of Informal Recruiting Practices On Racial And Gender Job Composition., Frederick Carson Mencken
Employer Recruitment And Job Matching Theories: The Effects Of Informal Recruiting Practices On Racial And Gender Job Composition., Frederick Carson Mencken
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation analyzes the effects of employer recruiting practices on the gender and racial composition of jobs. Using the Metropolitan Employer-Employee Survey, I examine how the structural characteristics of organizations, occupations, industries and jobs affect the manner in which employers recruit for certain vacancies. The results show that employers use informal recruitment techniques, such as recruitment through professional colleagues and business associates, to recruit for executive/managerial, professional and other white-collar occupations. Employers use formal recruiting techniques for jobs in large establishments, in government agencies, and lower-level white-collar jobs. The dissertation addresses the link between recruitment practices and the gender and …
Complete Spectroscopy In The Mercury-187m,G Decay: The Structure Of Gold-187., Dubravka Rupnik
Complete Spectroscopy In The Mercury-187m,G Decay: The Structure Of Gold-187., Dubravka Rupnik
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nuclear spectroscopy studies were performed on transitions in $\sp{187}$Au following the $\beta\sp+$/EC decay of $\sp{187g}$Hg and $\sp{187m}$Hg in order to determine the origin of the extensive shape coexistence observed in the low-energy structure of this nucleus; and, through particle-core coupling analysis, to probe the shape coexistence observed in its neighboring even-even nuclei, $\sp{186}$Pt and $\sp{188}$Hg. Gamma-ray and conversion electron data were collected, on-line, at the UNISOR isotope separator facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The $\sp{187m.g}$Hg activity was produced in heavy-ion induced reactions using the HHIRF 25 MV tandem accelerator. Nine transitions with enhanced electric monopole strength were found …

Pharmacodynamics Of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agents In Acute Inflammation And Chronic Pain In The Horse., Jane Granville Owens
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ketoprofen (2.2 and 3.63 mg/kg) and phenylbutazone (4.4 mg/kg) were compared in equine models of acute synovitis and chronic hoof pain. The eicosanoids, prostaglandin E$\sb2$ (PGE$\sb2$) and leukotriene B$\sb4$ (LTB$\sb4$), increased dramatically in synovial fluid after carrageenan-induced synovitis of the intercarpal joint. PGE$\sb2$ concentrations in untreated horses peaked at 9 hours while LTB$\sb4$ concentrations peaked in all horses at 3 hours. Synovial fluid concentrations of both eicosanoids returned to near baseline by 48 hours. Lameness, joint temperature, and synovial fluid volume, protein and nucleated cells increased at 3 to …
Graphs In Number Theory., Leigh Ann Myers
Graphs In Number Theory., Leigh Ann Myers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the 1930's L. Redei and H. Reichardt established methods for determining the 4-rank of the narrow ideal class group of a quadratic number field, Q($D\sp{1/2}).$ One of these methods involves determining the number of D-splittings of the discriminant, D, of the number field. Later, this method was revised so that we need only find the rank of a matrix over F$\sb2$. In some cases, these Redei matrices can be viewed as adjacency matrices of graphs or digraphs. In Chapter I we introduce the graphs and matrices mentioned above, the method for finding 4-ranks, and present some preliminary results on …
Tales From The Magazine Prison House: Democracy And Authorship In American Periodical Fiction, 1825-1850., Laurence Scott Peeples
Tales From The Magazine Prison House: Democracy And Authorship In American Periodical Fiction, 1825-1850., Laurence Scott Peeples
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the second quarter of the nineteenth century, weekly and monthly periodicals emerged as the primary forum for new American literature. In several respects periodicals reflected the multiplicity of rapidly growing Eastern cities: they assembled a variety of "voices" in single texts and maintained a dialogue between editors and readers. At the same time, the magazines sought to "create" a more homogenous middle-class audience that would equate the capitalist transformation of American society with the "natural" progress of democracy. This dissertation examines that process by analyzing the writing and careers of four "magazinists": Nathaniel Parker Willis, Caroline Kirkland, Lydia Maria …
Studies On The Diffusive Transport Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals In Bed Sediments., Gregory John Thoma
Studies On The Diffusive Transport Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals In Bed Sediments., Gregory John Thoma
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hydrophobic chemicals have accumulated in sediments for most of the last century as the result of industrial and municipal discharges as well as urban and agricultural runoff to surface waters. Beginning with the Clean Water Act, these pollutant sources have been significantly reduced resulting in the sediments becoming a source of pollutants to the overlying water ecosystem. It is therefore important to determine the rate at which the contaminants associated with the sediment are released to the water. Removal or isolation of sediment-associated contaminants is often desirable. One option for isolation of contaminated sediments from the aquatic ecosystem is capping, …
The Stylistic Mechanics Of Implicitness: Entailment, Presupposition, And Implicature In The Work Of Ernest Hemingway And Tim O'Brien., Donna Glee Williams
The Stylistic Mechanics Of Implicitness: Entailment, Presupposition, And Implicature In The Work Of Ernest Hemingway And Tim O'Brien., Donna Glee Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The discipline of linguistics has identified three patterns through which unstated information may be conveyed: entailment, presupposition, and implicature. Using these theoretical constructs, analysts may determine systematically how propositions which are never asserted may nonetheless be communicated. In the old writers' maxim "Show me; don't tell me," "showing" corresponds to implicit communication of unstated material, while "telling" corresponds to the overt assertion of the proposition of interest. Examination of texts by Hemingway and O'Brien reveals carefully controlled use of the linguistic strategies of implicitness to suspend meaning between and behind the fixed points of the words on the page. This …
Promoter Analysis Of A Rice Seed Storage Protein Glutelin Gene And Expression Of Bean 7s Seed Storage Protein Beta-Phaseolin In Transgenic Rice Plants., Zhenwei Zheng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It was demonstrated, using a homologous transgenic rice system, $5\sp\prime$ distal and proximal cis-acting transcriptional regulatory elements were required for developmental control of a rice seed storage protein glutelin (Gt1) gene. The functional importance of proximal elements in the context of the 1.8 kb promoter was demonstrated by single substitution mutations in the TATA box ($-$28/$-$23), AACA motif ($-$73/$-$61), and protein-binding Boxes I ($-$103/$-$86), II ($-$124/$-$110), III ($-$175/$-$158), and IV ($-$200/$-$217). A simultaneous mutation of five protein-binding sites ($-$410/$-$86) essentially eliminated the activity of the 1.8 kb promoter. To understand the function of the $5\sp\prime$ distal cis-acting upstream sequence, eighteen …
Renouncing Restrictive Narratives: The Southern Lady And Female Creativity In The Works Of Lee Smith And Gail Godwin., Deborah Rae Wesley
Renouncing Restrictive Narratives: The Southern Lady And Female Creativity In The Works Of Lee Smith And Gail Godwin., Deborah Rae Wesley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study, I analyze how restrictive female narratives hinder women's creativity in the works of two contemporary Southern women novelists, Lee Smith and Gail Godwin. I focus primarily on the narrative of the Southern lady, how it has changed over the past century and a half, but how it still represses many Southern women. By demanding that women conform to a predetermined definition of who or what they can become, the narrative of the Southern lady asks women to become static images and stifles their individual creativity. Moreover, the class-consciousness and emphasis on appearances that the narrative requires encourages …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Morphological analyses of PVC, PVC/CPE, and PVC/CPE/OPE compounds were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning-transmission electron microscopy. A correlation has also been established between the morphological analyses and the IZOD impact strength of PVC compounds. PVC compounds were prepared in a Haake Torque Rheometer using various blending conditions. The fusion level of processed compounds was evaluated by DSC thermal analysis and capillary rheological analysis, based on the heat of fusion and entrance pressure drop, respectively. S-shaped fusion curves were obtained. The effects of temperature, rotor speed, and totalized torque on the fusion level of PVC compounds …
Three Essays On Derivative Securities., Paul Douglas Brockman
Three Essays On Derivative Securities., Paul Douglas Brockman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dessertation is to analyze three issues related to the pricing of derivative securities. The first issue deals with options pricing and stock return volatility. If stock return volatility is a stochastic process, as opposed to deterministic process, then the present form of commonly-used option pricing models is misspecified and arbitrage-based arguments are invalid. Since stochastic volatility option models are considerably more complex than their deterministic counterparts, it is essential to rule out all deterministic possibilities before accepting the necessity of stochastic models. The result of applying chaos methodology to over 62,000 intra-day implied volatility observations shows …

The present investigations were conducted to examine the use of a new methodology termed matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) in combination with chromatographic techniques to analyze different classes of environmentally significant compounds in biological matrices. The research described in this dissertation represents the author's work to demonstrate the feasibility of improving environmental analytical methods by employing MSPD and chromatographic techniques in combination or separately. Preliminary tests were conducted to determine some of the parameters that would be used to test MSPD extraction techniques and to chromatograph standards and extracts of benzo (a) pyrene (BAP), benzo (a) pyrene ring-oxidized metabolites, Aroclor …
Generalizations Of The Optimal Control Problem For The Vidale-Wolfe Advertising Model., Richard Dale Edie
Generalizations Of The Optimal Control Problem For The Vidale-Wolfe Advertising Model., Richard Dale Edie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation is to study two different generalizations of the optimal control problem based on the Vidale-Wolfe Advertising Model. The first problem is an infinite horizon free endpoint one-dimensional version of the Vidale-Wolfe optimal control problem of advertising in time varying markets. A solution is obtained for this problem. Then a thorough proof using the method of dynamic programming is presented to verify that this solution is optimal under reasonable market conditions. The second problem is a finite time fixed endpoint two-dimensional version of the Vidale-Wolfe optimal control problem. Normal optimal trajectories are obtained for this problem. …

The Development Of Bridge Inspection Strategies Based On A Statistical Analysis Of Deterioration In Underwater Structures., Mark Deymond Fugler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A comprehensive statistical analysis was performed on the condition data generated by a statewide underwater inspection of bridges in Louisiana. The research defined pertinent underwater structural decay characteristics and established a method for establishing a bridge's propensity for underwater deterioration based upon those relevant factors. The inspection results were reviewed to ascertain the impact of human-bias on the consistency in the bridge condition ratings. Using a set of importance factors obtained through a questionnaire submitted to a group of inspectors, the fuzzy set theory was employed to assist in the removal of data incongruities. A combination of pure fuzzy set …

Analysis of polysomnography variables …
Comedy Of Redemption In Three Southern Writers., Carolyn Patricia Gardner
Comedy Of Redemption In Three Southern Writers., Carolyn Patricia Gardner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study discusses a theological motif in the works of three Southern writers, Faulkner, Percy, and Toole, with The Unvanquished, The Moviegoer, and A Confederacy of Dunces being the works chosen for examination. The particular nature of religion in a Southern novel is established early. The Southern novelist is concerned not with sin in the abstract but with the existential angst resulting from it and with the hope of redemption. Also, in the Southern novel, there is humor undergirding even the study of existential angst. God's comedy is the focus of this study of the movement toward redemption in …
Nurturing In The Novels Of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, And Ellen Price Wood., Sarah Domingue Spence
Nurturing In The Novels Of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, And Ellen Price Wood., Sarah Domingue Spence
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Employing attachment theory of contemporary psychology, I explore nurturing in the novels of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, and Ellen Price Wood. The heroines' need for nurturing manifests itself in diverse aspects of the genre. In the mother's absence, various attachment figures, such as guardians, surrogate mothers, sister/friend relationships serve as nurturer. In Fanny Burney's novels, Evelina, Cecilia, and The Wanderer, fortune and a family name become important societal goals. Joyce Hemlow's and Margaret Doody's works supply criticism and biographical data. In Radcliffe's Gothic novels, The Mysteries of Udolpho, and The Italian, the heroines' attachment bond is analyzed using Ellen Moers' …

Cognition And Learning: The Implications Of A Situated Connectionist Perspective For Theory And Practice In Education., John A. St. Julien
Cognition And Learning: The Implications Of A Situated Connectionist Perspective For Theory And Practice In Education., John A. St. Julien
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation I attempt to construct a framework for an alternate theory of instruction, starting from the position that education has no theory of learning; instead, what passes for theories of learning are actually descriptions of the conditions under which knowledge is acquired. Descriptive theorizing does not serve education well because it is not likely, being a description of what is known told in terms of assumed categories, to be generative or adaptive. I question the naturalness of current assumptions about thought and learning by tracing the consolidation of the present discursive formation around a presumed unity of logic, …
Connectivity For Matroids And Graphs., Haidong Wu
Connectivity For Matroids And Graphs., Haidong Wu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation studies connectivity for matroids and graphs. The main results generalize Tutte's Wheels and Whirls Theorem and have numerous applications. In Chapter 2, we prove two structural theorems for 3-connected matroids. An element e of a 3-connected matroid M is essential if neither the deletion M$\\$e nor the contraction M/e is 3-connected. Tutte's Wheels and Whirls Theorem proves that the only 3-connected matroids in which every element is essential are the wheels and whirls. If M is not a wheel or a whirl, we prove that the essential elements of M can be partitioned into classes where two elements …
