A Methodology To Assess Safety Conditions In Louisiana Agriscience Laboratories., Julio Alcibiades Melendez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The safety conditions of the agriscience laboratories of the high schools of the State of Louisiana have not been studied extensively. This study was undertaken to develop a methodology to assess these conditions. The Southeastern region of the state was selected as the research area. Forty four high schools in this area have agriscience laboratories. Forty one of these laboratories were assessed. A Hypothesized Survey Model was made up from the background information searched. This model was validated at another school region and used to design a Research Survey Model. This RSM was face and field validated. Safety ratings were …
Breeding Ecology Of Songbirds In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of Louisiana., Keith Ouchley
Breeding Ecology Of Songbirds In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of Louisiana., Keith Ouchley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I examined productivity, survivorship and nest-site habitat characteristics of small terrestrial landbirds breeding in bottomland hardwood forest study sites in Louisiana. Bottomland hardwood forests are the dominate ecosystem of riverine floodplains in the southeastern United States, and these forests support a diverse bird community. Over 80 percent of this forest type has been lost, primarily due to agricultural clearing, and the relative abundance of many bird species that breed in these forests has also declined. The outcomes of 790 nests of 33 species were determined. For most species, productivity was greater in large forest tracts than in small tracts. Predation …
Reflection On Teaching: An Ethnographic Study Of Preservice Teachers' Beliefs And Practices., Thomasine Haskins Mencer
Reflection On Teaching: An Ethnographic Study Of Preservice Teachers' Beliefs And Practices., Thomasine Haskins Mencer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between preservice teachers' expressed beliefs, their practices, and how they described the two. Particular emphasis was given to factors that influenced the preservice teachers' expectations of students. The preservice teachers were in the graduate year of a five year teacher education program that embraced reflective practice. In many ways, the two preservice teachers conformed to the mold of the typical American teacher in that they were middle class, Anglo Saxon, females who were high achievers from small towns. However, the pair differed in their experiences with diversity. The preservice teachers' …

"Goodbye, Mamma. I'M Off To Yokohama": The Office Of War Information And Tin Pan Alley In World War Ii., Kathleen Ellen Rahtz Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The quest for the Great American War Song of World War II occupied the American music industry for most of the war years. But, to the amazement of the United States government's Office of War Information and the music industry, the songwriters of the era could not create a martial tune that had a lasting impact on the American public. Prior to World War II there had always been a song or songs readily identifiable with past conflicts. Following Pearl Harbor, Tin Pan Alley rushed to write the Great American War Song; however, to the bemusement of the music industry, …

Geographic Information Systems For Schistosomiasis In Brazil., Maria Emilia Bavia
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study has identified environmental factors influencing the distribution of schistosomiasis and the prevalence of the disease in the population in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The Intergraph Modular Environmental Systems nucleus (MGE), a geographic information system (GIS), was applied to 30 municipalities in Bahia to establish a descriptive and quantitative study of the spatial and temporal dynamics of infection. The GIS was constructed by digitizing maps of soil type, vegetation, topology, and hydrologic features including temperature, rainfall, and seasonal pattern of precipitation, prevalence of schistosomiasis, and the distribution of snails, which are the intermediate hosts of the disease. The …

The Role Of Seed Banks, Disturbance, And Sea Level Rise In Determining The Plant Community Structure Of Oligohaline Coastal Marshes., Andrew Hamilton Baldwin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Coastal wetlands worldwide are threatened by sea level rise, which is expected to affect the growth and survival of wetland vegetation by increasing water level and salinity. While the effects of salinity and inundation on adult vegetation of oligohaline marshes have been widely studied, the species composition of the seed bank and its response to elevated salinity and water level have not been examined. Additionally, the role of disturbances of different intensities in structuring marsh plant communities and possible interactions between disturbance and rising sea level have received little attention. Disturbances in coastal marshes include nonlethal disturbances such as fire …
Pseudospin Symmetry In Heavy Deformed Nuclei., Andrey L. Blokhin
Pseudospin Symmetry In Heavy Deformed Nuclei., Andrey L. Blokhin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The origin and validity of pseudospin symmetry, which is characteristic for heavy atomic nuclei ($A \ge 100$), are discussed. The transformation to the pseudospin representation for physically significant operators is performed by means of specially designed analytical techniques. The many-particle helicity operator is found to accomplish the transformation to the pseudospin basis in the scope of realistic nuclear models. Estimates based on both nonrelativistic mean-field and relativistic Dirac-Brueckner results show that in the helicity-transformed space nucleons move in a finite-depth, strongly nonlocal, potential with an effectively reduced spin-orbit strength. Since the chirality operation is the limiting case of the helicity …
The Relationship Of Hemolymph Sugar, Juvenile Hormone And Biogenic Amines To The Three Behavioral States Of Mature Honey Bees., Janko Bozic
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Differences in sugar titers, JH synthesis rate and biogenic amine metabolism correlated with three distinct activity groups or mature bees: resting bees, followers and dancers. Dancers had lower trehalose titers than followers or resting bees. In absconding bees trehalose titers were even lower, due to greatly elevated locomotor activity. The collecting and transferring of food by dancers and followers resulted in a higher glucose titer than in resting bees. Followers had a higher-JH synthesis rate than dancers, suggesting that JH could be an internal motivational stimulus to recruit followers to forage. Dancers and followers collect and transfer food and therefore …

Cognitive Differences And Their Predictive Ability On Reading Performance In Skilled And Unskilled Readers., Mary Elizabeth Carter
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study examined the relationships among short-term memory, working memory, phonological awareness, and reading performance as measured by an informal reading inventory. Relationships between and among the tasks, their predictive importance with regard to word recognition, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, and their ability to discriminate among groups of readers were investigated. A battery of tests comprising 14 cognitive variables and 24 reading variables was individually administered to 105 fourth and fifth grade normally achieving readers, unidentified unskilled readers, and school identified unskilled readers. Results revealed that working memory, phonological awareness, and syntactic awareness tasks were significantly intercorrelated among themselves, …
A Cyclic Plasticity/Damage Model For Metal Matrix Composites., Ganesh Thiagarajan
A Cyclic Plasticity/Damage Model For Metal Matrix Composites., Ganesh Thiagarajan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new six parameter general anisotropic yield surface using a fourth order anisotropic tensor $M\sb{ijkl}$ has been proposed. This form has been derived based on the physical behavior observed for the material under consideration--directionally reinforced metal matrix composites. Its validity has been shown by proving its convexity and form under coordinate transformation. This form of the anisotropic yield function is general in nature which can be used for either pressure dependent or independent cases. The proposed surface compares well with the extensive experimental data of Dvorak et al. (1988) and Nigam et al. (1993) performed on boron-aluminum metal matrix composite. …

The mean duration of development from oviposition to adult emergence ranged from 26.6 d on turnip to 27.5 d on …
Deux Niveaux D'Expression Du Systeme Aspectuel-Temporel En Francais., You Qi He
Deux Niveaux D'Expression Du Systeme Aspectuel-Temporel En Francais., You Qi He
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There are, among natural languages in the world, two modes of temporal expression: tensed languages use morphological means to express time relationships; whereas tenseless languages use only lexical, co-textual and/or contextual means in their temporal expression. In fact, we can also identify two modes of temporal expression among different moods in French. The Indicative Mood uses morphological means to expresse time relationships; whereas with moods other than the Indicative (i.e. the Infinitive, the Participle, the Subjunctive and the Conditional), the utterer has to recourse to lexical, co-textual and/or contextual indication to distinguish different time relationships. Furthermore, within the forms of …
Satisfaction With Health Care: A Predictor Of Hemodialysis Patient Compliance., Pamela Gay Davis
Satisfaction With Health Care: A Predictor Of Hemodialysis Patient Compliance., Pamela Gay Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several studies in general medical populations have demonstrated the positive relation between satisfaction with health care and compliance with treatment recommendations. Overall, the compliance literature suggests that the behavior of the health care provider can influence patient compliance and the resulting health outcome. However, the relation between patient satisfaction and compliance with the hemodialysis regimen has not been examined. Because of this populations' frequent and extensive interaction with the dialysis staff, exploration of the effects of satisfaction with these relationships and the care provided on patient compliance appears to be an important health care issue. This study evaluated the ability …

The Application Of Network Analysis To The Study Of Differentially Effective Schools., Maryann Maxwell Durland
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study applied network analysis to the exploration of the structural characteristics of differentially effective elementary schools within the framework of school effectiveness research. The study took place in two parts: a Pilot Study, using archived data, and a Field Study, using data from a stratified sample of differentially effective schools. The Centrality-Cohesiveness Model of School Effectiveness, developed through the Pilot Study, defined a communication structure as a function of the leadership status of the principal (defined by the principal's centrality) and the cohesiveness of the faculty (defined as network density). Quantitative results from both the Pilot Study and the …

This paper presents an analysis of the inclusive properties of diffractive deep inelastic scattering events produced in ep interactions at HERA. The events are characterised by a rapidity gap between the outgoing proton system and the remaining hadronic system. Inclusive distributions are presented and compared with Monte Carlo models for diffractive processes. The data are consistent with models where the pomeron structure function has a hard and a soft contribution. The diffractive structure function is measured as a function of xℙ, the momentum fraction lost by the proton, of β, the momentum fraction of the struck quark with respect to …

We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

A Feasibility Study Of Using Air-Lift Pumps For Aeration, Degasification, And Water Movement In A Recirculating Aquaculture System, John Clay Loyless
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A feasibility study of using air-lift pumps for water movement, aeration, and degasification in a recirculating aquaculture system was conducted. Fluid delivery tests of various air-lift configurations indicated that water flow is a function of the submergence depth, lift height, and air injection rate. The air-lift units were found to transfer 02 at only 1/5 to 1/2 the rate of comparably operated open-water aeration systems. The standard oxygen transfer rate (SOTR) increased with air injection from 1-7 scftn, however, the energy usage also increased, yielding a reduction in the standard aeration efficiency (SAE) from over 2 to less than 0.5 …
The Study Of The Relationship Between Teacher Effectiveness, Classroom Management Integrity And Treatment Integrity, Lynn Habyan Lafleur
The Study Of The Relationship Between Teacher Effectiveness, Classroom Management Integrity And Treatment Integrity, Lynn Habyan Lafleur
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The major purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between the degree to which teachers followed their own classroom behavior management plan and the degree to which teachers implemented an intervention developed during consultation. Eighteen teachers provided information on the behavioral strategies they used to manage their classrooms (i.e., rules and consequences). Teachers were observed for implementation of their classroom management strategies, implementation of an intervention developed during consultation, and for effective teaching behaviors. Overall, correlations among the variables indicated that there was not a significant relationship between the degree to which teachers implemented their own classroom plan …

Jet production in deep inelastic scattering for 120 < Q2< 3600 GeV2has been studied using data from an integrated luminosity of 3.2 pb-1collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified with the JADE algorithm. A cut on the angular distribution of parton emission in the γ*-parton centre-of-mass system minimises the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the jet rates. The jet rates, when compared to O(αs2) perturbative QCD calculations, allow a precise determination of αs(Q) in three Q2-intervals. The values are consistent with a running of ifαs(Q), as expected from QCD. Extrapolating to Q = MZ0αs(MZ0) = 0.117 ± 0.005 (stat)-0.005+0.004(systexp) ± 0.007 (systtheory). © 1995.

The contribution of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to the realkalinization of intracellular pH (pHi) and resynthesis of purine nucleotides during recovery from anoxia was investigated in embryos of Artemia franciscana by assessing the sensitivity of mitochondrial respiration to pH, calculating proton consumption by oxidative phosphorylation, and measuring changes in pHi using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance. Following short-term anoxia, pHi increased from 6.7 to 7.7 during 20 min of aerobic recovery and was temporally correlated with a large increase in ATP. State 3 respiration rates of isolated mitochondria were not substantially compromised at the acidic pH corresponding to the pHi during anoxia …

If M is a loopless matroid in which M/vbX and M/vbY are connected and X∩Y is non-empty, then one easily shows that M/vb(X∪Y) is connected. Likewise, it is straightforward to show that if G and H are n-connected graphs having at least n common vertices, then G ∪ H is n-connected. The purpose of this note is to prove a matroid connectivity result that is a common generalization of these two observations. © 1995.

Laboratory searches for the detection of gravitational waves have focused on the detection of burst signals emitted during a supernova explosion but have not resulted in any confirmed detections. An alternative approach has been to search for continuous wave (CW) gravitational radiation from the Crab pulsar. In this paper, we examine the possibility of detecting CW gravitational radiation from pulsars and show that nearby millisecond pulsars are generally much better candidates. We show that the minimum strain hc ∼ 10-26 that can be detected by tuning an antenna to the frequency of the millisecond pulsar PSR 1957+20, with the detector …

The exclusive production of ρ{variant}0mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range 7 < Q2< 25 GeV2for λ*p centre of mass (c.m.) energies 40 to 130 GeV. The λ*p → ρ{variant}0p cross section exhibits a Q-(4.2±0.8-0.5+1.4)dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised ρ{variant}0's are observed. The λ*p → ρ{variant}0p cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low x. © 1995.
