Inclusive jet cross sections for events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction from the reaction ep → jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector. The cross sections refer to jets with transverse energies ETjet> 8 GeV. The data show the characteristics of a diffractive process mediated by pomeron exchange. Assuming that the events are due to the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure, the quark and gluon content of the pomeron is probed at a scale ∼ (ETjet)2. A comparison of the measurements with model predictions based on …

Is There A Connection Between No-Hair Behavior And Universality In Gravitational Collapse?, Jorge Pullin Aug 1995

Is There A Connection Between No-Hair Behavior And Universality In Gravitational Collapse?, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We apply linear perturbation theory to the study of the universality and criticality first observed by Choptuik in gravitational collapse. Since these are essentially nonlinear phenomena our approach provides a rough approximation. In spite of this, universal behavior of the final black hole mass is observed with an exponent only slightly higher than the observed value of 0.367. The universal behavior is based on the unique form that in-falling perturbations on black holes have at the horizon. © 1995.

The Archaeological Site Of Port Dauphin (1mb61): Its Role In The French Colony On Mobile Bay, George W. Shorter Aug 1995

The Archaeological Site Of Port Dauphin (1mb61): Its Role In The French Colony On Mobile Bay, George W. Shorter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The French colony in Louisiana resulted from the competition between France, Spain, and England for control of the region. France's interest, that began with the expedition of La Salle in 1682, resulted in the founding of the first French permanent colony on the Gulf coast by Iberville in 1699, Fort Maurepas. The colony was moved in 1702 to Mobile Bay. Mobile, the capital, was located 39 miles upriver for access to the Indian nations of the interior. Dauphin Island served as port. After two decades the colony was refocused on the Mississippi River, but the first 20 years of French …

The Educational Value Of 4-H Activities As Perceived By Louisiana 4-H Agents, Lanette Griffin Aug 1995

The Educational Value Of 4-H Activities As Perceived By Louisiana 4-H Agents, Lanette Griffin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the educational value of 4-H activities as perceived by Louisiana 4-H agents. Data were obtained by a researcher designed survey completed by 91 4-H agents during the 1994 Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service’s annual conference. The data showed the 4-H camp was the highest rated educational activity and it was the only activity perceived as having a very high educational value. Twenty activities were rated as high in educational value, 25 as moderate in educational value, and four items as low in educational value. Agents were also asked to estimate the number …

The Kinetics Of Quantal Transmitter Release From Retinal Amacrine Cells, Salvador Borges, Evanna Gleason, Michael Turelli, Martin Wilson

Exocytosis of transmitter at most synapses is a very fast process triggered by the entry of Ca2+ during an action potential. A reasonable expectation is that the fast step of exocytosis is followed by slow steps readying another vesicle for exocytosis but the identity and kinetics of these steps are presently unclear. By voltage clamping both pre- and postsynaptic neurons in an isolated pair of retinal amacrine cells, we have measured evoked synaptic currents and responses to single vesicles of transmitter (minis). From these currents, we have computed the rate of exocytosis during a sustained presynaptic depolarization. We show here …

Photoproduction at HERA is studied in ep collisions, with the ZEUS detector, for γp centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130-270 GeV. A sample of events with two high-pT jets (pT > 6 GeV, η < 1.6) and a third cluster in the approximate direction of the electron beam is isolated using a clustering algorithm. These events are mostly due to resolved photoproduction. The third cluster is identified as the photon remnant. Its properties, such as the transverse and longitudinal energy flows around the axis of the cluster, are consistent with those commonly attributed to jets, and in particular with those found for the two jets in these events. The mean value of the photon remnant pT with respect to the beam axis is measured to be 2.1 ± 0.2 GeV, which demonstrates substantial mean transverse momenta for the photon remnant. © 1995.

We evaluate the ability of the BATSE spectroscopy detectors to detect the absorption lines observed by Ginga in gamma-ray burst spectra. We find that BATSE can detect the 20.6 keV line in the S1 segment of GB 870303 with a detection probability of ∼1/4 in nearly normal incident bursts, with the probability dropping off to nearly 0 at a burst angle of 50°; the lines at 19.4 and 38.8 keV in GB 880205 have a high detection probability in BATSE up to burst angles of 75°. In addition, we calculate detection probabilities for these two line types as a function …

Effects Of Pairing In The Pseudo-Su(3) Model, D. Troltenier, C. Bahri, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

An extended version of the pseudo-SU(3) model which includes both spin and proton-neutron degrees of freedom is used to study the influence of the pairing interaction on K-band mixing, B(E2) values and quadrupole moments. Using the asymmetric rotor model as a backdrop, specific consequences of a many-particle shell-model based description of these collective properties are demonstrated and fundamental limits of the collective model's approach are investigated. Finally, the pseudo-SU(3) model, including representation mixing induced by pairing, is used to calculate the energies of 140Ce and the results are compared to experimental data and other theories. © 1995.

ID elements comprise a rodent SINE (short Interspersed DNA repetitive element) family that has amplified by retroposition of a few master genes. In order to understand the Important factors of SINE amplification, we investigated the transcription of rat ID elements. Three different size classes of ID transcripts, BC1, BC2 and T3, have been detected In various rat tissues, including brain and testes. We have analysed the nucleotlde sequences of testes- and brain-derived ID transcripts isolated by size-fractlonation, C-talling and RACE. Nucleotide sequence variation of testes ID transcripts demonstrated derivation from different loci. However, the transcripts represent a preferred set of …

We have purified two proteins from Drosophila that bind to the scs' boundary element of the hsp70 domain at locus 87A7. Their palindromic binding sites (CGATA-TATCG) symmetrically abut the previously mapped hypersensitive site of scs′. We have cloned a cDNA for one of these proteins, BEAF-32 (boundary element-associated factor of 32 kDa). It encodes a novel protein that is bound to scs' but not scs in vivo. Immunostaining localizes BEAF to hundreds of interbands and many puff boundaries on polytene chromosomes, suggesting that a chromosomal domain consists of a band (or puff) and part of the flanking interbands. Enhancer blocking …

Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson Jun 1995

Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Gross observation of testicular parenchyma of 1.5 to 2-yr-old horses reveals both light and dark regions. If this gross, differential shading reflects quantitative differences in the development of spermatogenesis and interstitial cell populations, the horse may prove to be a useful model for study of the paracrine relationships associated with initiation of spermatogenesis. The objective of this study was to characterize seminiferous tubules and interstitium of testes with gross, differential shading. Testes with both light and dark regions of parenchyma were obtained from horses 1.5- 2 yr old and compared to parenchyma of fetal, 2-yr old, or 5-yr-old horses. Stereology …

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in photoproduction events in the laboratory pseudorapidity range -1.2<η<1.4 have been measured up to pT=8 GeV usign the ZEUS detector. Diffractive and non-diffractive reactions have been selected with an average γp centre of mass (c.m.) energy of 〈W〉=180 GeV. For diffractive reactions, the pT spectra of the photon dissociation events have been measured in two intervals of the dissociated photon mass with mean values 〈MX〉=5 GeV and 10 GeV. The inclusive transverse momentum spectra fall exponentially in the low pT region. The non-diffractive data show a pronounced high pT tail departing from the exponential shape. The pT distributions are compared to lower energy photoproduction data and to hadron-hadron collisions at a similar c.m. energy. The data are also compared to the results of a next-to-leading order QCD calculation. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep → e J/ψ p for Q2 < 4 GeV2 at s = 296 GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5 pb-1, using the ZEUS detector. The J/ψ was detected in its e+e- and μ+μ- decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be 52-12+7 ± 10 nb at an average γp centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and 71-20+13±12 nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low x in the proton is assumed. © 1995.
