Reasonable Employment Accommodations For Persons With Disabilities: A Policy-Capturing Approach., Heather A. Honig Jan 1998

Reasonable Employment Accommodations For Persons With Disabilities: A Policy-Capturing Approach., Heather A. Honig

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified persons with disabilities who need them in order to work (EEOC, 1992). The ADA defines reasonable accommodation ambiguously. The current study used a policy capturing approach to examine the effects of characteristics of the person with a disability (i.e., type of disability, previous performance level, employment status), characteristics of the accommodation (i.e., cost, type of accommodation), and characteristics of the observer (i.e., occupational status, disability status, gender) on judgments of reasonable accommodation. Students and employed persons (n = 107) completed the …

Rousseau And The Lyric Natural: The Self As Representation., Pamela Diane Gay Jan 1998

Rousseau And The Lyric Natural: The Self As Representation., Pamela Diane Gay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jean-Jacques Rousseau's work for the lyric stage comprises several opera libretti (Les Muses galantes and La Decouverte du nouveau monde), an intermede ( Le Devin du village), a scene lyrique ( Pygmalion) and an unfinished opera (Daphnis et Chloce ). These works use as a motif the figure of nature while continually defining and redefining, in a sort of spiral development, the self. Nature represents for Rousseau and others of his century a paradigm allowing for small segments of history to be presented as an evenly construed narrative. For Rousseau, the construction of a narrative in Le Second Discours marks …

A Brief Method For Evaluating The Effects Of Stimulant Medication And Behavioral Interventions On The Classroom Performance Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd)., Veronica Schilling Gulley Jan 1998

A Brief Method For Evaluating The Effects Of Stimulant Medication And Behavioral Interventions On The Classroom Performance Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd)., Veronica Schilling Gulley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the separate and combined effects of varying dosages of methylphenidate (MPH) and behavioral interventions of varying strengths on the disruptive behavior and academic performance of 5 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Overall results indicated the behavioral interventions at some level were comparable to previously prescribed dosages of MPH for decreasing disruptive classroom behavior for 4 of 5 participants. However, the "strength" of behavioral intervention necessary to achieve maximum improvements was idiosyncratic. For a fifth participant, results indicated that MPH was not necessary. Results also demonstrated that the combination of the behavioral interventions at some level …

A Study Of Pore Fluids And Barite Deposits From Hydrocarbon Seeps: Deepwater Gulf Of Mexico., Baoshun Fu Jan 1998

A Study Of Pore Fluids And Barite Deposits From Hydrocarbon Seeps: Deepwater Gulf Of Mexico., Baoshun Fu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary goals of this research were to (i) determine the factors controlling the chemical compositions of pore fluids in hydrocarbon seep sediments of the Gulf of Mexico, and (ii) delineate the nature, age and origin of barite deposits associated with seeps. Three types of pore fluids from seeps have been discerned: (i) sediment-trapped seawater; (ii) brines derived by seawater dissolution of subsurface salt diapirs; and (iii) deep-seated formation waters enriched in Ba and Ra. The Ra-enriched formation waters advecting to the seafloor may explain why 226Ra levels in the Gulf of Mexico water column are higher than in the …

Computer-Assisted Instruction: Enhancements For Language-Learning Applications., William Lawrence Harrell Jr Jan 1998

Computer-Assisted Instruction: Enhancements For Language-Learning Applications., William Lawrence Harrell Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Presently, computer-assisted instruction is in use in many educational venues. Unfortunately, the application of computer-assisted language learning at a distance has virtually been ignored. This is an opportunity that needs to be explored. In order to do so, a number of considerations must be attended to. First, effective monitor display design is critical for the optimal presentation of distance learning material. Second, gender and equity factors that impact computer use must be understood to minimize the detrimental effects they might have on computer-assisted distance learning. Third, the needs of students involved with the particularly-demanding application of distance learning principles of …

Determination Of Optimal Composition Of Stabilized Phosphogypsum Composites For Saltwater Application., Tingzong Guo Jan 1998

Determination Of Optimal Composition Of Stabilized Phosphogypsum Composites For Saltwater Application., Tingzong Guo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phosphogypsum (CaSO4 ˙ 2H2O, PG), a solid by-product of phosphoric acid production, has been classified as a "Technologically Enhanced Natural Radioactive Material" (TENR), because it contains radionuclides (eg., radium 226) and some trace toxic metals in concentrations, which may pose a potential hazard to human health and the environment. The current regulated disposal method for PG is on-site stockpiling, which has created a serious environmental management problem. An appealing solution to the problem is the use of stabilized PG for aquatic enhancement activities. This solution can eliminate the airborne vector of transmission for radon 222 and therefore may provide a …

Factors Affecting Root Colonization By Calonectria Ilicicola And Development Of Red Crown Rot Disease On Soybean., Pali Upulmathie De Silva Kuruppu Jan 1998

Factors Affecting Root Colonization By Calonectria Ilicicola And Development Of Red Crown Rot Disease On Soybean., Pali Upulmathie De Silva Kuruppu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Red crown rot of soybean caused by Calonectria ilicicola is a serious disease in Louisiana. The pathogen infects soybean roots and the above ground symptoms and signs appear during reproductive stages of the plant. Little information is available on root infection as well as effects of environmental factors or varietal resistance on this process. Field studies were conducted in 1994, 1995, and 1996 to determine the effects of planting date, cultivar susceptibility, and soil pathogen population on soybean root colonization by C. ilicicola and subsequent disease development. Early season colonization of tap as well as lateral roots was important for …

The Conversion Of Light Amines Over Copper-Containing Zeolites., Trent Francis Guidry Jan 1998

The Conversion Of Light Amines Over Copper-Containing Zeolites., Trent Francis Guidry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Copper-containing zeolites have been prepared by vapor, aqueous, and solid-state ion-exchange, characterized, and investigated for the conversion of light amines. A copper-containing zeolite was synthesized by vapor ion-exchange in this study by a method that does not appear to have been previously reported. This material was prepared by reaction of the acidic zeolite with CuCl vapor, followed by oxidation of the Cu+ ions to copper oxonium. ions which are converted to copper hydroxyl dimers on exposure to air. The copper hydroxyl dimer exchanged zeolite is stable in air and can be converted back to a highly exchanged Cu+ zeolite by …

Comparison Of Intervention Strategies Based On Experimental Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, And Reinforcer Assessment In Addressing Off-Task Classroom Behaviors., Lynn Habyan Lafleur Jan 1998

Comparison Of Intervention Strategies Based On Experimental Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, And Reinforcer Assessment In Addressing Off-Task Classroom Behaviors., Lynn Habyan Lafleur

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Independent descriptive and experimental analyses as well as preferences assessments, were conducted. Descriptive analyses were conducted to identify baseline levels of off-task behavior, and to systematically describe the co-variation between off-task behaviors and peer attention, teacher attention, and the instructional task. Data on off-task behavior were analyzed by computing conditional probabilities associated with maintaining stimuli (e.g., peer attention). Intervention development was based on a simple contingency reversal. Experimental analyses were conducted to examine the extent to which off-task behavior was related to task difficulty or to consequences (i.e., peer attention) that were systematically programmed by the experimenter. Hypotheses and intervention …

Analog Functional Assessment In General Education Settings., James Alfred Levelle Jan 1998

Analog Functional Assessment In General Education Settings., James Alfred Levelle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Persistent disruptive behaviors in school classrooms often result in referrals for behavior intervention services. Although research has supported several intervention strategies, limited research has focused on linking assessment to the selection of specific strategies. Experimental analysis procedures for assessing the function of behavior have been successful in the selection of specific strategies with developmentally disabled students and in special education environments. However, research in general education settings has been sparse. In this study, an analog functional assessment approach utilizing experimental analysis procedures was conducted to assess the function of off-task behaviors in regular education settings. Conditions were established in each …

Half Empty Or Half Full: Explaining Black Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action., Maruice Louis Mangum Jan 1998

Half Empty Or Half Full: Explaining Black Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action., Maruice Louis Mangum

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Using the Black National Election Study series (1984, 1988, and 1996), I estimate black support for affirmative action. I develop models that capture the effects of self-interest (as reflected in socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, and perceptions of both racial threat and racial fairness) and symbolic politics attitudes (the core values of egalitarianism and individualism, political ideology, partisanship, and group consciousness). The method of choice is Ordinary Least Squares Estimation. An examination of the data shows that what drives black attitudes toward affirmative action are largely symbolic politics attitudes, not the effects of self-interest. Generally speaking, the theory of symbolic politics …

Autobiographical Memory In Mild And Moderate Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Judith Parks Levy Jan 1998

Autobiographical Memory In Mild And Moderate Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Judith Parks Levy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease that particularly affects memory with difficulties starting insidiously and gradually progressing. Anterograde amnesia for semantic and episodic types of declarative knowledge becomes the most prominent and disproportionately impaired cognitive symptom. By the middle stages of the disease, this memory loss progresses to severe impairment. The neuropathology of early AD involves the hippocampal complex, which is involved in new learning and storage of recent experiences. As the disease progresses, it involves neocortical areas, which are involved in the storage of more remote memories. Participants, including minimal stage AD, mild stage AD, moderate stage AD, …

School Desegregation From Brown To Fordice, 1954-1992: A Case Study In American Individualism., Albert Leon Samuels Jan 1998

School Desegregation From Brown To Fordice, 1954-1992: A Case Study In American Individualism., Albert Leon Samuels

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In United States v. Fordice (1992), the Supreme Court declared that racially nondiscriminatory admissions and hiring policies alone failed to satisfy the state of Mississippi's "affirmative duty" to dismantle a previously de jure system of segregated higher education. However, the justices declined to define precisely what the state must do to satisfy its constitutional obligations, leaving in its wake a host of unresolved questions. Of particular concern to many African Americans is the fact that the future status of public black universities was left in the balance. Using a case study approach, this dissertation argues that higher education desegregation cannot …

Vocational Education And Recidivism At The Louisiana Correctional Institute For Women., Henry Elbert Sanders Jr Jan 1998

Vocational Education And Recidivism At The Louisiana Correctional Institute For Women., Henry Elbert Sanders Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recidivism is a phenomenon causing growing concern. When released criminals return to crime, the costs become immeasurable. Victims can never be adequately compensated for personal losses, and the nation cannot halt the spiraling costs of maintaining prisons housing mostly repeat offenders. The nation is spending upwards from 98 billion dollars on crime, annually. Public opinion opposes education for inmates, yet, with the nation's prisons operating near capacity, a millennium approaches that promises another wave of prison construction resulting in exponential leaps in the costs of incarceration. A marketing concept asserts that attracting people to a product is half the battle. …

Early Fertilization Events In The Freshwater Zebra Mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha., Michael James Misamore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The morphological and functional mechanisms involved in the early fertilization events in the freshwater zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Bivalvia:Veneroida:Dreissenidae) are presented. Mature adults release gametes in response to external applications of 5-hydroxytryptamine. Sperm retain a primitive morphology consisting of a head, midpiece and tail The head is approximately 1.6 $\mu$m in diameter and 4 $\mu$m in length. An acrosomal vesicle is highly compartmentalized with a central axial core containing actin. The midpiece is composed of 4 mitochondria and a pair of centrioles. A single flagellum is elaborated from the distal centriole. The eggs of D. polymorpha are 50-60 $\mu$m in …

The "Power...To Alter And Amend": Textual Production And Editorial Actions In Samuel Richardson's "Clarissa"., Steven Robert Price Jan 1998

The "Power...To Alter And Amend": Textual Production And Editorial Actions In Samuel Richardson's "Clarissa"., Steven Robert Price

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of texts, focusing on how texts are constructed (through both words as well as physical attributes) and how they are edited after their initial composition. The scope of this dissertation is limited to Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) and his rare 1750 third edition of Clarissa and to the characters in Clarissa and their familiar letters. I argue that the altering of a text is a negotiation of power between the editor and the author, and that editors advance their personal agendas by undermining the intentions of the author. In Chapter 1, I explain the relevancy of …

A Social Cognitive Theory Model Of Salesperson Performance., Robert Chapman Mcmurrian Jan 1998

A Social Cognitive Theory Model Of Salesperson Performance., Robert Chapman Mcmurrian

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A primary objective of marketing practitioners, especially sales managers in organizations with personal selling functions and salesforces, has been an understanding of the factors related to effective sales performance. Much of the current research dedicated to understanding these factors has been grounded in Vroom's expectancy theory. Expectancy theory posits that successful performance of a task is a function of the level of effort that a person expends on the task. There are three factors that influence this level of effort: (1) an expectation that effort will result in better task performance; (2) a belief that better performance will result in …

"To Play With Fixities And Definites": Byron's Fanciful Real World Games In "Don Juan"., Nancy Clark Victory Jan 1998

"To Play With Fixities And Definites": Byron's Fanciful Real World Games In "Don Juan"., Nancy Clark Victory

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In his "epic" retelling of the Don Juan tale, Byron playfully transforms his conventional sources into a poem which explores, among other subjects, Byron's poetics. Of the many love relationships in Don Juan, Juan and Haidee's represents not only ideal love, but also a startlingly Romantic expression of poetic activity. The lovers' transformation of the elements of their heretofore hostile world into a natural playworld is accomplished by a fourth variety of Romantic imagination, a Byronic Fancy which surpasses the mechanical nature of Coleridge's "Fancy." Operating in a manner strikingly similar to Coleridge's "secondary Imagination," Byron's poetic faculty also "dissolves, …

The Psychometric Characteristics Of The Adhd Rating Scale-Iv., George Walter Hebert Jan 1998

The Psychometric Characteristics Of The Adhd Rating Scale-Iv., George Walter Hebert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ADHD Rating Scale-IV is a screening instrument designed to assess attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children. It is comprised of 18 items and has both a home and school version for parents and teachers to complete, respectively. A sample consisting of 178 parent-teacher dyads of children aged 6-12 years of age participated in the study. Psychometric investigation of these scales revealed high internal consistency, adequate test-retest reliability, and appropriate correlations with other measures of ADHD. Principal components factor analysis revealed two factors for both scales: (1) Inattention-hyperactivity and (2) Impulsivity-hyperactivity. Discriminant function analyses and base rate analyses revealed that these scales …

Spikes In Matroid Theory., Zhaoyang Wu Jan 1998

Spikes In Matroid Theory., Zhaoyang Wu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

For an integer $n\ge 3,$ a rank-n matroid is called an n-spike if it consists of n three-point lines through a common point t such that, for all k in $(1, 2,\..., n - 1),$ the union of every set of k of these Lines has rank $k + 1.$ The point t is called the tip of the n-spike. Ding, Oporowski, Oxley, and Vertigan proved that, for all $n\ge 3,$ there is an integer $N(n)$ such that every 3-connected matroid with at least $N(n)$ elements has a minor isomorphic to a wheel or whirl of rank $n,\ M(K\sb{3,n})$ or …

The Flesh And The Spirit: The Female Subject And The Body In The Spiritual Autobiographies Of Anne Hutchinson, Anne Bradstreet And Mary Rowlandson., Mary Clare Carruth Jan 1998

The Flesh And The Spirit: The Female Subject And The Body In The Spiritual Autobiographies Of Anne Hutchinson, Anne Bradstreet And Mary Rowlandson., Mary Clare Carruth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation approaches Anne Hutchinson's trial transcripts (1637-1638), Anne Bradstreet's "To My Dear Children" (1656), and Mary Rowlandson's "The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, together with the Faithfulness of His Promises Displayed; Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mary Rowlandson" (1682) from the perspectives of autobiographical scholarship and feminist theory. It places these writers within a subversive matrilineal autobiographical tradition. It analyzes how seventeenth-century American Puritan women engender the conversion genre, which many scholars have assumed to be gender-neutral. In particular, it considers how Hutchinson, Bradstreet, and Rowlandson negotiate cultural inscriptions of the female body as they …

Alcohol, Assault And Area: An Examination Of Alcohol Availability And Crime In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Stephen Edgar Costanza Jan 1998

Alcohol, Assault And Area: An Examination Of Alcohol Availability And Crime In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Stephen Edgar Costanza

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An association between alcohol and crime has been proposed for over forty years in Criminological Literature. The research conducted in this dissertation uses pooled data on alcohol, neighborhood characteristics, and crime in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The intention of the paper is to further augment our understanding of the alcohol-crime relationship by studying it at the macro-level. Using 278 Baton Rouge block groups as units of analysis, the results of the study confirm that the presence of package-only alcohol outlets have significant effects on assault and robbery within neighborhoods.

Reverse Engineering Biological Control Systems For Applications In Process Control., Richard Brian Mclain Jan 1998

Reverse Engineering Biological Control Systems For Applications In Process Control., Richard Brian Mclain

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main emphasis of this dissertation is the development of nonlinear control strategies based on biological control systems. Commonly utilized biological control schemes have been studied in order to "reverse engineer" the important concepts for applications in process control. This approach has led to the development of a nonlinear habituating control strategy and nonlinear model reference adaptive control schemes. Habituating control is a controller design strategy for nonlinear systems with more manipulated inputs than controlled outputs. Nonlinear control laws that provide input-output linearization while simultaneously minimizing the cost of affecting control are derived. Local stability analysis shows the controller can …

Access To Child Care In North Carolina: The Interaction Of Gender Relations, Class, And Government Policy Across Places And Scales., Bonnie Morris Henderson Jan 1998

Access To Child Care In North Carolina: The Interaction Of Gender Relations, Class, And Government Policy Across Places And Scales., Bonnie Morris Henderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Access to child care is becoming an increasingly critical economic and social issue for American families as more and more women work outside the home. In addition to being an important economic and social issue, access to child care is also a significant geographical issue, in two senses. First, place is an important component of child care access; substantial spatial variations exist in child care services in the United States. Secondly, attention to issues of scale is important when examining child care issues since access to child care is shaped by both local and non-local forces. I use both horizontal …

Hierarchical Estimation Of Oceanic Surface Velocity Fields From Satellite Imagery., Thomas Dean Leming Jan 1998

Hierarchical Estimation Of Oceanic Surface Velocity Fields From Satellite Imagery., Thomas Dean Leming

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Oceanic surface velocity fields are objectively estimated from time-sequential satellite images of sea-surface temperature from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometey on board the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's polar orbiters. The hierarchical technique uses the concept of image pyramids and multi-resolution grids for increased computational efficiency. Images are Gaussian filtered and sub-sampled from fine to coarse grid scales. The number of pyramid levels is selected such that the maximum expected velocity in the image results in a displacement of less than one pixel at the coarsest spatial scale. Maximum Cross-Correlation at the sub-pixel level with orthogonal polynomial approximation is …

Cerebral Hemoglobin Oxygen Saturation In Patients With Restless Legs Syndrome And Periodic Limb Movements In Sleep., Mark Jude Hurry Jan 1998

Cerebral Hemoglobin Oxygen Saturation In Patients With Restless Legs Syndrome And Periodic Limb Movements In Sleep., Mark Jude Hurry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pathogenic theories of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS) were reviewed and critiqued, and a new theory for the pathogenesis of RLS and PLMS was presented. It was proposed that both disorders are caused by sleep-related hypoperfusion in the area of the cerebral cortex that mediates sensation and movement in the legs. The hypoperfusion was proposed to be caused by high amplitude oscillations in total cerebral blood flow known as B-waves and by flow-reducing turbulence at several of the bifurcations in the anterior cerebral artery. This theory was tested by using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) …

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Potyviruses Isolated From Sweet Potato., Eliezer Rodrigues De Souto Jan 1998

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Potyviruses Isolated From Sweet Potato., Eliezer Rodrigues De Souto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ten potyvirus isolates from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cv. Beauregard showing russet crack symptoms and three other isolates associated with internal cork and feathery mottle symptoms were obtained from commercial fields in the United States. The biological properties of these isolates and those of a mechanically transmitted virus obtained from I. purpurea were compared with a previously characterized sweet potato feathery mottle virus strain (SPFMV-C) from North Carolina. The symptoms induced in a range of hosts indicated that two of the isolates were associated with russet crack symptoms in the cultivar Jersey; however, none of them could be associated with …
