On The Second Stiefel-Whitney Class Of Scaled Trace Forms Of Central Simple Algebras., Rosali Brusamarello
On The Second Stiefel-Whitney Class Of Scaled Trace Forms Of Central Simple Algebras., Rosali Brusamarello
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this work we compute the second Stiefel-Whitney class $w\sb2$ of the scaled trace form $Q\sb{A,a}(x)={\bf tr}\sb{A/k}(ax\sp2),$ where A is a central simple algebra over a perfect field k of characteristic different from two, $a\in A$ is a fixed element, and ${\bf tr}\sb{A/k}$ is the reduced trace. The first three chapters provide background material about quadratic forms, central simple algebras, group cohomology, and representations of linear algebraic groups. The fourth chapter presents two known results about the second Stiefel-Whitney class of trace forms: Serre's formula for the case of etale algebras and Saltman's formula for the case of central simple …
Using Mathematical Modeling For The Prediction Of Success In Developmental Math., Kathy Rogers Autrey
Using Mathematical Modeling For The Prediction Of Success In Developmental Math., Kathy Rogers Autrey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This exploratory study was primarily designed to determine the possibility of developing a discriminant model to predict success in developmental mathematics. The sample included 402 students enrolled in a developmental math class at Northwestern State University, a small public school in North Louisiana, in the fall semester of 1996. Demographic, achievement and attitudinal variables were used in the development of the model. High school GPA, social enrichment scores from the College Student Inventory, and black were factors identified as significant in the model. Although limited in its predictive ability, the model does provide faculty and advisors with additional information to …
Evaluation Of The Toxicological Consequences Of Dietary Exposure To Individual Classes Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Or A Mixture In The Fischer-344 Rat., Mary Durand Boudreau
Evaluation Of The Toxicological Consequences Of Dietary Exposure To Individual Classes Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Or A Mixture In The Fischer-344 Rat., Mary Durand Boudreau
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There is special concern about the potential health effects of by-products released into the environment after combustion or conversion of fossil fuels. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), while initially released largely into the atmosphere, are subsequently deposited in soil and water and on foods. Although the significance of PAH contamination with regard to environmentally caused diseases and cancer in humans is difficult to estimate, it is suggested that the potential hazards may be underestimated. In an effort to understand the potential adverse health effects of PAHs, a comprehensive study was undertaken to determine the metabolic fate of selected PAHs as individual …
Antimycobacterial Natural Products From Higher Plants., Charles Lowell Cantrell
Antimycobacterial Natural Products From Higher Plants., Charles Lowell Cantrell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two-hundred and thirty crude organic extracts from 118 plant species distributed among ten families of higher plants have been evaluated for antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H$\sb{37}$Rv) and M. avium using the BACTEC 460 radiorespirometric assay. At 100 $\mu$g/ml, twenty-four and ten of the extracts caused more than 95% inhibition of growth of M. tuberculosis and M. avium, respectively. Bioactive chromatographic fractions of Borrichia frutescens (Asteraceae) provided two new triterpenes and one known cycloartenol. In radiorespirometric bioassays against M. tuberculosis, the new (24R)-24,25-epoxycycloartan-3-one and the known (24R)-24,25-epoxycycloartan-3$\beta$-ol exhibited minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 8 $\mu$g/ml. In contrast, the new (23R)-3-oxolanosta-8,24-dien-23-ol …
Dietary Nitrogen And Energy Metabolism In The Ruminant: Effect Of Source Of Nitrogen., Angelica Maris Chapa
Dietary Nitrogen And Energy Metabolism In The Ruminant: Effect Of Source Of Nitrogen., Angelica Maris Chapa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of dietary nitrogen on the energy status of ruminants and the feasibility of using L-carnitine to prevent the negative effects associated with overfeeding nitrogen. The objectives of the first experiment were to monitor the nitrogen and energy status of cows grazing ryegrass pastures through the measurement of key blood metabolites and insulin and to determine the protein supplementation scheme which would maximize milk yield and maintain plasma urea nitrogen levels below dangerous levels. In the first experiment, the protein supplement that supplied excess total protein exerted negative effects on body condition and …
The Control Of Time In Renaissance England: Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, And Donne., Eric C. Brown
The Control Of Time In Renaissance England: Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, And Donne., Eric C. Brown
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
While critics have much analyzed the idea of time, they have left largely unchronicled an important Renaissance conception. Time the destroyer or devourer and time the creator or revealer of truth are familiar early modern tropes. But the inversion of this power structure--humanity not controlled by but controlling time--was equally pervasive. Especially apparent are inversions in which time is acted upon as an instrument objectified for use and abuse. Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, and Donne all explore this notion of time as controllable instrument, alternately condemning or glorifying time's debasement, enfeeblement, subjugation, and manipulation. For Marlowe, the control of time manifests …
The Effects Of Gender And Race On Physician Treatment Of Patient Emotion., Vaughn A. Decoster
The Effects Of Gender And Race On Physician Treatment Of Patient Emotion., Vaughn A. Decoster
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study established theoretical and empirical foundations for the investigation into how physicians deal with (treat) patient emotion. The questions posed, "Do physicians employ specific strategies to treat patient emotion?" and "What are the effects of physician-patient social characteristics (gender and race) on emotion treatment?" Coalescing two seemingly incongruent perspectives (social constructionism and Kemper's social relational theory), I clarified the conceptual basis for the emotion management of other people. From these perspectives, I developed a three stage theory to describe and explain the physician treatment of patient emotion (triaging, diagnosing, and treatment), as well as appreciate the effects of social …
Marginal Employment In The United States: 1971-1993., Nicole Thomson Flynn
Marginal Employment In The United States: 1971-1993., Nicole Thomson Flynn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation, I examine trends in production and the concomitant demographic transformation of the labor force, in the context a series of economic cycles since 1969. Using these three forces as a backdrop, I first consider changes in employment hardship and the forces contributing to underemployment during periods following economic recessions. Then, I examine differences between men and women for employment outcomes. Next, to explain hardship during these periods, I include important demographic and geographic factors related to underemployment. Finally, I examine the impact of labor market context on individual outcomes. Based on the transformation of work, I explain …
Characterization Ofp53 Gene Sequence In Exons 5-8 Of The Western Mosquito Fish, Gambusia Affinis., Neeraja Kondapi Erraguntla
Characterization Ofp53 Gene Sequence In Exons 5-8 Of The Western Mosquito Fish, Gambusia Affinis., Neeraja Kondapi Erraguntla
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cancer is a multistage disease that involves both genetic and epigenetic factors. The number of physical and chemical agents with which human beings come in contact on a regular basis is increasing everyday. Somatic mutations can result due to such exposures and trigger uncontrolled cell division resulting in cancer. The p53 tumor suppressor gene has been identified in several vertebrate species ranging from man to fish. In addition, inactivation of p53 has been observed in a wide variety of tumors. Fish models are becoming increasingly popular for assessing environmental exposure. Low background incidence of mutations, relatively low cost tumor studies, …
The Optimal Implementation Of On-Line Optimization For Chemical And Refinery Processes., Xueyu Chen
The Optimal Implementation Of On-Line Optimization For Chemical And Refinery Processes., Xueyu Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
On-line optimization is an effective approach for process operation and economic improvement and source reduction in chemical and refinery processes. On-line optimization involves three steps of work as: data validation, parameter estimation, and economic optimization. This research evaluated statistical algorithms for gross error detection, data reconciliation, and parameter estimation, and developed an open-form steady state process model for the Monsanto designed sulfuric acid process of IMC Agrico Company. The plant model was used to demonstrate improved economics and reduced emissions from on-line optimization and to test the methodology of on-line optimization. Also, a modified compensation strategy was proposed to improve …
Adjective Acquisition: Developmental Changes In The Use Of The Shape Bias, Syntax, Shape Consistency, And Semantic Attributes., Lenore Carol Frigo
Adjective Acquisition: Developmental Changes In The Use Of The Shape Bias, Syntax, Shape Consistency, And Semantic Attributes., Lenore Carol Frigo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
When learning vocabulary, children must determine the meaning of each word that they hear. In hypothesizing about word meanings, children follow certain principles that simplify vocabulary acquisition. Among these principles are several that lead children to follow a shape bias. Under the shape bias, children assume that words extend to objects that share a common shape. This shape bias is useful for learning count nouns, which often include whole-object shape as an important aspect of meaning. However, the shape bias is not useful for the development of other word classes, such as adjectives. In this study, several variables were examined …
Using Academic And Demographic Variables To Predict Success In The General Education Curriculum., Steven Giles Horton
Using Academic And Demographic Variables To Predict Success In The General Education Curriculum., Steven Giles Horton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Student success and attrition in all levels of education is becoming a more important issue in an age where education dollars are diminishing while various schools of higher learning are increasing. As a result, schools are reevaluating their current programs of study in an attempt to determine if both students and universities are fulfilling their respective goals. This process of reevaluation has several fundamental considerations, one of these which is addressed in this study--the effectiveness of prerequisite requirements and other demographic variables on predicting the success of students in courses in the general education curriculum. The purpose of this study, …

Clinical Laboratory Science University Faculty Learning Types And The Use Of Information Technology In The Classroom., Cynthia Susan Handley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to explore the status of learning types of clinical laboratory science university faculty and their use of information technology in the classroom. Traditionally clinical laboratory science education has been lecture and lab sessions. However, with the advent of the information age, professors are moving from the role of lecturer to facilitator. Some professors are in tune with the new information tools while others are not interested at all. This research had a two-fold purpose: (1) to explore who was using technology in the classroom and identify what they were using, and (2) to search for a …

Four leadership patterns ranging from principal only to overall faculty involvement were identified. …
Secondary Control: Examining The Influence Of School Restructuring On High School Delinquency., Michael O. Maume
Secondary Control: Examining The Influence Of School Restructuring On High School Delinquency., Michael O. Maume
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recent years have seen extensive debate on the multitude of problems plaguing secondary education in the United States, and the problem of school crime and deviance is gaining a sizable share of the attention. A wave of school reform sometimes labeled the "restructuring" movement suggests that major organizational changes in schools, especially public schools, can positively affect student achievement and commitment to educational goals. Yet there has been practically no attention paid to the possible effects of restructuring on reducing delinquency in schools. I examine the impact of high school restructuring on school delinquency using a broad conception of delinquency …
Comparative Structure And Function Of Intrinsic Gill Muscles In Freshwater Bivalve Molluscs., Scott Medler
Comparative Structure And Function Of Intrinsic Gill Muscles In Freshwater Bivalve Molluscs., Scott Medler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The lamellibranch gill is used for various vital functions ranging from food capture to ion regulation. The foundation for many of these functions is the transport of water through the gill. This dissertation examines the organization of intrinsic gill muscles and the associated connective tissue in the freshwater bivalve Dreissena polymorpha with comparisons made to Corbicula fluminea and Toxolasma texasensis. Gill muscles can be divided into two groups: those associated with the connective tissue sheets that underlie external and internal gill epithelia; and those encased in connective tissue bands oriented perpendicular to the bases of gill filaments. The sets of …
Color Measurement And Reflectance Spectroscopy Of Total Suspended Solids For Remote Sensing And Environmental Monitoring Of Aquatic Ecosystems., Dean Leslie Muirhead
Color Measurement And Reflectance Spectroscopy Of Total Suspended Solids For Remote Sensing And Environmental Monitoring Of Aquatic Ecosystems., Dean Leslie Muirhead
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Water color and water quality are related in complex and poorly understood ways. Suspended particulates, such as phytoplankton, bacteria, and soil particles, contribute significantly to the color and quality of natural water bodies by absorbing and scattering sunlight. There is currently no standard method to measure the color and optical properties of total suspended solids (TSS). Remote sensing algorithms estimate TSS concentrations from observed values of reflectance. There are spectral differences in TSS over time and space. A convenient, inexpensive, and quick method is developed and evaluated to quantify optical differences between different TSS. The technique links the traditional TSS …
Atmosphere Effects Revisited: The Effect Of Atmosphere On Judgments Of Validity Using Thematic Syllogisms., Roberta Elizabeth Love
Atmosphere Effects Revisited: The Effect Of Atmosphere On Judgments Of Validity Using Thematic Syllogisms., Roberta Elizabeth Love
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Syllogisms having conclusions consistent with atmosphere are shown to be accepted at significantly higher rates than those having conclusions inconsistent with atmosphere. Furthermore, there is strong evidence that the dual influences of quality and quantity, independently affect acceptance rates. The first experiment also indicates a main effect of gender on acceptance rates to certain invalid syllogisms (those with conclusions inconsistent with quality, or quantity, or both). The second experiment replicates the atmosphere effect found in the first experiment and extends it to valid syllogisms and indeterminate invalids consistent with both quality and quantity. It also proposes an alternative to the …
Sample-Based Forest Landscape Diversity Indices., Bernard Ross Parresol
Sample-Based Forest Landscape Diversity Indices., Bernard Ross Parresol
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies of spatial patterns of landscapes are useful to quantify human impact, predict wildlife effects, or describe various landscape features. A robust landscape index should quantify two distinct components of landscape diversity: composition and configuration. One category of landscape index is the contagion index. A generalized measure of contagion is defined as a function of concentration. From this definition two contagion indices, $\Gamma\sb1$ (a new index) and $\Gamma\sb2$ (an entropy formulation), are derived from expected values of geometric random variables. A widely used relative contagion index, $RC\sb2,$ is shown to be a scaled version of $\Gamma\sb2.$. Distributional properties of $\\Gamma\sb1,\ …
Characterization And Biodegradation Of Crawfish And Agricultural Processing By-Product Compost., Mounir Yehia Minkara
Characterization And Biodegradation Of Crawfish And Agricultural Processing By-Product Compost., Mounir Yehia Minkara
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Disposal of crawfish processing wastes poses a challenging problem to the rapidly expanding crawfish industry. Co-composting is examined as a waste management alternative to landfill disposal. Wood chips, rice hulls, bagasse, and bark were evaluated for use as bulking agents in composting crawfish processing residuals. Use of bagasse as a bulking agent led to the largest reduction in volatile solids, organic-C, particle size, and compost volume. Finished compost using bagasse contained the greatest concentration of N. Self-heating patterns and decomposition of crawfish residuals were satisfactory using all four bulking agents. The finished products of all compost mixtures were stable and …
The Effect Of Pulmonary Infection (Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae), Endotoxin And Dexamethasone On Enrofloxacin Pharmacokinetic Parameters In Swine., Lynn O. Post
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Efficacy studies are often done on diseased animals while pharmacokinetic studies are done on healthy animals. Disease models are inherently difficult to standardize because of the many variables associated with measuring pharmacokinetic parameters in abnormal animals. Information derived from pharmacokinetic studies with diseased animals could be useful to determine if therapeutic doses of a drug or antimicrobial becomes less effective or toxic due to changes in distribution and clearance. The objectives of this study were to: characterize a pulmonary infection model in swine using Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae; evaluate the pharmacokinetic changes associated with the pulmonary infection model and dexamethasone after the …

Albert Camus's Reconstruction Of Symbolic Reality: Exile, Judgment, And Kingdom., Peter Alan Petrakis
Albert Camus's Reconstruction Of Symbolic Reality: Exile, Judgment, And Kingdom., Peter Alan Petrakis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Throughout his life, Albert Camus was deeply concerned with problems of language and representation. Often mislabeled an existentialist or philosopher of the absurd, his skepticism of modern rationality has been well recorded. Yet despite considerable scholarly attention, a satisfactory understanding of Camus's thoughts on language has not been achieved. This essay is an effort to rectify the situation by carefully exploring Camus's use and understanding of symbols. By first gleaning a theory of symbolization from the philosophical works of Ernst Cassirer, Eric Voegelin, and Paul Ricoeur, and then comparing it to Camus's writings on myth, symbols, and narrative, it is …
Daniel Defoe's "An Essay On The History And Reality Of Apparitions": A Critical Edition., Kathleen Louise Kincade
Daniel Defoe's "An Essay On The History And Reality Of Apparitions": A Critical Edition., Kathleen Louise Kincade
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is a scholarly edition of Daniel Defoe's An Essay on the History and Reality of Apparitions, which was published in 1727 and has never been re-edited since his death in 1731. It poses several interesting problems for both the literary critic and bibliographer. This edition is challenging for the bibliographer because, initially, this work was published anonymously. The second edition appeared with the addition of "by Andrew Moreton, Esq." as author. A section of my introduction attributes this work to Defoe by using contemporary theory and methods. Defoe scholars have had a problem attributing works to Defoe. Instead …

Leisure-Time Physical Activity As A Moderator Of The Association Between Stress And Depression Among Low-Income Primary Care Female Population., Isabel Cristina Scarinci
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study used a longitudinal design in an attempt to answer the following questions: (a) what is the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle in a low-income primary care female population? (b) does minor stress predict depressive symptoms after controlling for major stress? and (c) does leisure-time physical activity moderate the association between stress and depressive symptoms? The sample included 150 randomly selected adult female patients recruited from primary care clinics at a public hospital in the state of Louisiana. This sample consisted predominantly of uninsured, African American, low-income, middle-aged females. The results indicated that prevalence of sedentary lifestyle (58%) was …
Gendered Experiences Of Public Accounting Firms: Organizational Commitment And Intentions To Leave., Harriet Lynn Stallworth
Gendered Experiences Of Public Accounting Firms: Organizational Commitment And Intentions To Leave., Harriet Lynn Stallworth
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The under representation of female public accountants in the upper echelons of public accounting organizations is recognized as problematic by both these firms and the accounting profession. The problem is confounded by women's higher turnover rate at each organizational level within these firms. The purpose of this study is to examine women's and men's experiences of the public accounting work environment in order to provide some insight into why women are more likely to leave these firms. The research questions to be addressed are (1) whether, and specifically, how, do males' and females' experiences of the public accounting work environment …
Gaining And Controlling Access To The Arena: Stories Of Ties In A Technological Dispute., Tobias Albert Ten Eyck
Gaining And Controlling Access To The Arena: Stories Of Ties In A Technological Dispute., Tobias Albert Ten Eyck
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This is a study of the stories told about distribution of resources and structural constraints which operate within newspaper arenas that were experienced by reporters and sources involved in coverage of food irradiation between 1987 and 1996 at two regional newspapers (Louisiana and Florida). Using an unstructured interview instrument, I conducted interviews with 40 sources and 12 newspaper reporters, which I used to construct a framework in which to show how cultural, economic and social capital are used for getting and blocking action in the newspaper arenas. These interviews show that while cultural capital was the most prominent type of …
Continued Consequences Of Race-Based Redistricting: An Analysis Of Incumbent Roll-Call Voting Behavior And Candidate Emergence In The 1990s., Christine Leveaux Sharpe
Continued Consequences Of Race-Based Redistricting: An Analysis Of Incumbent Roll-Call Voting Behavior And Candidate Emergence In The 1990s., Christine Leveaux Sharpe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There have been many claims made that the creation of the majority-black district has led to a more conservative Congress, both in terms of roll-call voting behavior and partisan membership. I contend that there is a direct relationship and an indirect relationship between the creation of majority-black districts and increased conservatism in the House. The direct relationship focuses on the roll-call voting behavior of the House member. The indirect relationship focuses on the partisan makeup of the House. The analysis is couched in broad-based rational choice theory, asserting that incumbent House members and prospective House candidates behave strategically in an …
A Model-Driven Simulation Study Of World-Wide-Web Cache Policies., Ying Shi
A Model-Driven Simulation Study Of World-Wide-Web Cache Policies., Ying Shi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The World-Wide-Web has experienced exponential growth in recent years. This growth has created a tremendous increase in network and server loads that have subsequently adversely affected user-response times. Among many viable and available approaches to reducing user-response time, Web caching appears to be one approach that has recently received considerable attention. In this dissertation we explore a new approach to the study of Web cache policies, namely model-driven simulation. We present a good model of Web-access user patterns based on sound theory and principles from the information sciences. This model is justified by the empirical web access data from several …
Autobiography From St. Augustine To David Antin: Examining The Construction Of The Self As Mutually Reflective Of Cultural Developments In Science And Technology, Art, And Literary Theory., Jessica Lynn Faust
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study, I look at the mutually reflective changes in society and autobiography in works definitive for their various periods: Augustine's The Confessions from antiquity; Rousseau's The Confessions from the eighteenth century; the autobiographical writings of Gertrude Stein, from the modernist period; and, most importantly here, the focus on the development of David Antin's work as representative of both postmodernism and current culture. Specifically, I consider the construction of the self in respect to art, literary theory, memory research, and science and technology. During the second half of the twentieth century, computers have permeated almost every facet of society. …
