The Relationship Of Social Skills To Psychopathology For Individuals With Mild And Moderate Mental Retardation., Stephen Joseph Anderson
The Relationship Of Social Skills To Psychopathology For Individuals With Mild And Moderate Mental Retardation., Stephen Joseph Anderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recent advances in the field of mental retardation have included the development of instruments for assessment of both psychopathology and social skills in individuals with mental retardation. Researchers have subsequently begun investigating relationships between psychopathology and social skills in individuals with mental retardation. Initial studies have focused on persons with severe and profound mental retardation. The present study examined the relationship between psychopathology and social skills in individuals with mild and moderate mental retardation. This investigation used the Assessment for Dual Diagnosis (ADD) to measure psychopathology and the Social Performance Survey Schedule (SPSS) to evaluate social skills. Significant differences were …

Prior to pyrolysis, group 1 by-products were mixed with four binders, sugarcane molasses, sugar beet molasses, corn syrup and coal tar. GACs were produced from group 1 and 2 materials by physical activation (carbon dioxide, steam) or from group 2 materials by chemical activation (phosphoric acid). Carbons were evaluated for their physical (hardness, bulk density), chemical (ash, pH), surface (total surface area, pore size distribution, surface oxides) and adsorption …
Psychological Adjustment In Children Of Mothers With Eating Disorders., Jane Marie Barbin
Psychological Adjustment In Children Of Mothers With Eating Disorders., Jane Marie Barbin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In recent years, there have been a few reports of the relationship between eating disorders in mothers and the psychological adjustment of their children. Most of these reports have been based upon anecdotal case studies, however a wide range of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal complications, including behavioral and feeding difficulties in children of these mothers has been described. This study advanced research in this area by incorporating both normal and depression comparison groups. The relationship between group membership of 65 mothers and responses on several child and parent dependent variables was evaluated by having mothers complete self-report measures. Overall it …
Quantifying Sustainability In Aquaculture Production., Rex Hall Caffey
Quantifying Sustainability In Aquaculture Production., Rex Hall Caffey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Despite increasing institutional focus in aquaculture, sustainability remains an amorphous and much debated concept. Little consensus has been identified on the issue beyond the general recognition that the concept should contain environmental, economic, and sociological considerations. This study addressed the specific, relevant question of whether politically diverse aquacuiture interests can collectively develop and agree on production-level goals and indicators of aquaculture sustainability. The research partitioned sustainability into its three subcategories: environmental, economic and social. This division facilitated the use of existing conventions of measurement and expression in each subcategory. Employing a modified Delphi technique, over 100 aquaculture stakeholders in the …

Internal Defect Detection In Hardwood Logs With Fast Magnetic Resonance Imaging., Eyler Robert Coates Jr
Internal Defect Detection In Hardwood Logs With Fast Magnetic Resonance Imaging., Eyler Robert Coates Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Identification of defects such as knots in logs before the cutting operation would allow lumber mills to maximize the value of lumber from each log. This dissertation presented images obtained from scanning an oak log with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The unique characteristics of MRI images of hardwood logs were noted and were used to derive a quick algorithm to isolate defects. Defect regions had some pixels that varied considerably in intensity from their neighborhood, providing a seed for initiating the defect region. There was an overlap between the pixel gray level of the defects and clear wood. Therefore, traditional …
Dialogue Between Confucius And Socrates: Norms Of Rhetorical Constructs In Their Dialogical Form And Dialogic Imagination., Bin Xie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present dissertation consists of six parts: an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. It is intended to recapture the rhetorical norms governing the Confucian and Socratic dialogues--their voice of credibility, proto-scientific attitude, tragic consciousness, and use of irony--so as to demonstrate how rhetoric enables them to carry out their political, philosophical and epistemological pursuits; my research aims at the description of similarities and differences between Socrates's and Confucius's rhetorical methods, which are shaped by their respective historical and cultural contexts. Specifically, my major objectives are to foreground, in accordance with Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism, the significance of the …

Apoptosis, Pcna, And P53, In Fundulus Grandis Fish Liver After In-Vivo Exposure To Mnng And 2-Af., Uriel Blas-Machado
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Dysfunction in homeostatic mechanisms of cell death and proliferation are considered to be important in carcinogenesis. The p53 gene has been implicated in the regulation of cell death and proliferation. The host response was measured through sequential immunohistochemical (IHC) detection of apoptosis, PCNA, and p53 in livers of Fundulus grandis fish exposed to MNNG or to 2-AF, two known carcinogens. Studies performed determined the stability of MNNG in saltwater, the suitability of different fixatives on IHC detection of apoptosis, PCNA-PC10, and p53 (various clones), and frequencies of expression of apoptosis, PCNA, and p53. A total of 996 fish specimens were …
All Blues: A Study Of African-American Resistance Poetry., Anthony Jerome Bolden
All Blues: A Study Of African-American Resistance Poetry., Anthony Jerome Bolden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Since the beginning of the twentieth century, critics of African-American poetry have disagreed vehemently about poetic form. Some, like J. Saunders Redding, for instance, have expressed skepticism about poetry based upon oral forms. Others, like Sterling Brown, have argued that a viable poetics can be developed from black expressive forms. This dissertation analyzes the debate over black poetic form and traces the development of modernist and postmodernist poetics that have been shaped by the specific contours of African-American vernacular culture. Yet this study is not merely formalistic. Although "All Blues" describes a blues aesthetic by examining intersexual relationships between the …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Principal Leadership Style And Student Academic Achievement In The Philippines., Mary Sylvette Tanjuan Gunigundo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Principal leadership has been identified to be a crucial factor in the success of a school. One measure of school success is student academic achievement. Effective school literature suggests that there exist a relationship between principal leadership and student academic achievement. Thus, this study explored the relationship between principal leadership style (transformational, transactional, or laissez-faire) and student academic achievement in the Philippines. Three control variables were considered in examining this relationship and these were teacher educational background, student population, and student socio-economic status (SES). This study was conducted in thirty-six elementary public schools in the Philippines. The revised Multifactor Leadership …
Processing, Microstructures, And Properties Of Cu-Fe Nanocomposites., Li He
Processing, Microstructures, And Properties Of Cu-Fe Nanocomposites., Li He
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new route has been developed to produce full-density, bulk, two-phase nanocomposites. Nanocrystalline, single-phase, fcc or bcc Cu$\sb{\rm 100-x}$Fe$\sb{\rm x}$ (x = 0 to 100) solid solution precursors were obtained by mechanical alloying of Cu and Fe at room temperature or liquid nitrogen temperature. These supersaturated solid solutions were decomposed on nanoscale upon hot consolidation, forming Cu-Fe two-phase nanocomposites in situ. Fully dense composite specimens have been obtained using either unconstrained or constrained sinter forging for the entire composition range (x = 0 to 100). The microstructures of the consolidated nanocomposites at representative second-phase volume fractions (x = 60, 85, …
Multi-Institutional Collaborations In Science: Structure, Types, And Outcomes., Ivan Mihailov Chompalov
Multi-Institutional Collaborations In Science: Structure, Types, And Outcomes., Ivan Mihailov Chompalov
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The advent of modern "big science" brings about a new kind of research formation: multi-institutional collaborations involving teams of researchers from several organizations. Despite their recent proliferation and visibility, no general classification of these "virtual organizations" exists. This study adopts a macrosociological, comparative perspective to develop a variety of classification schemes that capture the systematic variation of interorganizational collaborations in science along basic structural dimensions and to examine the relationships of these classifications with important sociological outcomes. Qualitative, historical analysis of collaborations in high-energy physics, space science, and geophysics showed that, when we set aside field-specific differences, seven general dimensions …
Logistic Regression And Item Response Theory: Estimation Item And Ability Parameters By Using Logistic Regression In Irt., Necati Engec
Logistic Regression And Item Response Theory: Estimation Item And Ability Parameters By Using Logistic Regression In Irt., Necati Engec
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of logistic regression procedures as a means of estimating item and ability parameters in unidimensional and multidimensional item response theory models for dichotomous and polytomous data instead of IRT models. Unlike the IRT models, single logistic regression model can be easily extended from unidimensional models to multidimensional models, from dichotomous response data to polytomous response data and the assumptions such as all slopes are the same and intercept is zero are unnecessary. Based on the findings of this study, the following preliminary conclusions can be drawn: Item and ability parameters …
A Validation Study Of The Assessment Of Dissimulation Scale Using Criminal And Civilly Committed Participants., Jill Suzanne Hayes
A Validation Study Of The Assessment Of Dissimulation Scale Using Criminal And Civilly Committed Participants., Jill Suzanne Hayes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Dissimulation malingering, unlike simulation malingering, refers to downplaying actual psychological difficulties in order to achieve secondary gain. Although several psychological tests have subscales designed to detect dissimulation, only the Assessment of Dissimulation Scale (ADS) has been specifically designed for this purpose. This screening instrument had limited usefulness, as it was validated only with college students. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ADS was effective in detecting dissimulation in criminal and civilly committed populations which are likely to be the clinical targets for such a scale, and to establish a cut-off score on the ADS above which …
Essays On Panel Unit Root Procedures: Applications To The Convergence Hypothesis, Ppp And Ucip., Kenan Lopcu
Essays On Panel Unit Root Procedures: Applications To The Convergence Hypothesis, Ppp And Ucip., Kenan Lopcu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The first two essays in this dissertation deal with the empirical examination of growth, specifically with the reexamination of convergence. The first essay introduces the issue and provides the preliminary results. Most of the empirical studies on the determinants of economic growth use cross-country analysis, employing long-term averages of relevant variables on each country. In these studies a negative relationship between average growth rates and initial incomes is interpreted as an indication of convergence in cross-country incomes and therefore, presented as evidence in support of neoclassical growth models. Such an analysis, however, ignores dynamic information that can explain part of …
Evaluating The Impacts Of Farmer Participation In The Wetland Reserve Program On The Louisiana Economy Using I-O, Sam, And Cge As Alternative Modeling Techniques., Williams Olubodunde Olatubi
Evaluating The Impacts Of Farmer Participation In The Wetland Reserve Program On The Louisiana Economy Using I-O, Sam, And Cge As Alternative Modeling Techniques., Williams Olubodunde Olatubi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the U.S., wetlands are one of the resources that have been adversely affected by development in agriculture. In response, and in order to protect wetlands as vital environmental resource, the federal government initiated several agriculture-related environmental protection programs, such as swamp buster, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). The WRP is an incentive-based program designed to encourage farmers to reconvert appropriate cropland to wetlands through subsidy payments. Because land is withdrawn from agricultural production, regions with relatively high participation rates, such as Louisiana, could experience adverse economic impacts from the program. As of August …
Effects Of Anesthesia And Potential Antispastic Agents In An Experimental Model Of Spasticity., Heather Colleen Mosser
Effects Of Anesthesia And Potential Antispastic Agents In An Experimental Model Of Spasticity., Heather Colleen Mosser
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Spasticity is a common motor disorder in spinal cord injured-patients. Therapeutic agents used to treat the motor abnormalities exist but are often unsatisfactory. Tests of potential pharmacotherapies are routinely conducted in anesthetized intact or acutely spinal animals, conditions which do not accurately simulate the human situation. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop, validate and use the chronic spinal rat as a model of spasticity that closely approximates the human spastic syndrome to evaluate antispastic agents. The main goals of this research project were to: (1) demonstrate the development of spasticity in the chronic spinal rat; (2) determine effects …
Questions About Behavioral Function (Qabf): A Behavioral Checklist For Functional Assessment Of Aberrant Behavior., Theodosia Renata Paclawskyj
Questions About Behavioral Function (Qabf): A Behavioral Checklist For Functional Assessment Of Aberrant Behavior., Theodosia Renata Paclawskyj
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Functional assessment is a tool in behavior therapy used to identify the functional relationships between a behavior of interest and the individual's environment. A functional assessment identifies variables that both occasion and maintain a particular behavior. Traditional functional assessment methodologies have relied on experimental techniques in which analog sessions are designed to mimic situations in the individual's environment. However, these techniques are time-consuming, require extensive training, and rely on the availability of numerous resources in the individual's setting. Development of a brief functional assessment checklist would circumvent these difficulties and make a significant contribution to applied behavioral psychology. The proposed …
Modeling And Optimal Design Of Spiral-Wound Membrane Systems For Gas Separations., Runhong Qi
Modeling And Optimal Design Of Spiral-Wound Membrane Systems For Gas Separations., Runhong Qi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Membrane system economics can be significantly affected by process modeling and design. Available spiral-wound permeator models are difficult to use for process design because of their mathematical complexity and high computational demands. Existing sequential design methods yield suboptimal flowsheets when multiple permeation stages are required. In this dissertation, more effective modeling and design techniques for spiral-wound systems separating binary and multicomponent gas mixtures are developed. An approximate modeling approach based on the assumption that the residue flow rate is constant in the direction of bulk permeate flow is proposed. This assumption allows a significant simplification of basic transport models which …

Facilitating Knowledge Integration And Flexibility: The Effects Of Reflection And Exposure To Alternative Models., Lewis Garnet Roussel Jr
Facilitating Knowledge Integration And Flexibility: The Effects Of Reflection And Exposure To Alternative Models., Lewis Garnet Roussel Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three experiments investigated the effect of various kinds of reflection (within-task and post-task reflection) on learning a process control task. Also, two ways of providing learners with alternative ideas about task behavior, exposure to other's ideas and providing hints for task solution, were examined. The task involved a simulated "sugar production factory" in which the learners sought to control sugar production by manipulating workforce size. It was predicted that combining within-task reflection with exposure to alternative task ideas would lead to superior task performance through integration of experiential and reflective knowledge. Contrary to the prediction, within-task reflection consistently interfered with …

Hypothesized relationships between reputation and financial resources, between human resources, financial resources, and physical resources and strategic perspective, and between strategic perspective and performance were tested in sample of family owned/operated retail jewelry stores. Structural equation modeling (LISREL 8) was used to develop a measurement model and structural model to test the patterns of relationships …
The Portrait Of A Psyche: Women's Underworld Journeys In Four Modern American Novels., Kristen Sifert
The Portrait Of A Psyche: Women's Underworld Journeys In Four Modern American Novels., Kristen Sifert
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Drawing from James Hillman's psychological reading of myth, this study traces the emergence of the ancient myth of Psyche in Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady, Caroline Gordon's The Women on the Porch, William Faulkner's Light in August, and Toni Morrison's Beloved. From the perspective of modern divisions, the novelists look forward to the wholeness of Psyche's reunion with Eros and the assumption of the mortal woman, yet their immediate focus is the transformative journey through the underworld. James elaborates the mythical impact of money; like the coins Psyche pays Charon, who detaches her from a sense of her …
Significance Of The Effect Of Nitrogen Application On The Engineered Bioremediation Of Crude Oil In A Salt Marsh., Paul Timothy Tate
Significance Of The Effect Of Nitrogen Application On The Engineered Bioremediation Of Crude Oil In A Salt Marsh., Paul Timothy Tate
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The biodegradation of the crude oil in a salt marsh was monitored by tracking the decline of the ratio of various components in the crude oil to a stable marker, hopane. In studies of mesocosms, addition of nitrogen as ammonium nitrate resulted in more rapid biodegradation of the oil at 0.10 significance. In field plots, addition of nitrogen was found to not significantly increase the rate of oil degradation over the rate in the control plots. The degradation of the oil is best described by a first order decay equation. The kinetic rate parameter k was 0.0054/day in the control …

Functions Of Liminality In Literature: A Study Of Georges Bataille's "Le Bleu Du Ciel", Julien Green's "L'Autre", And Assia Djebar's "L'Amour, La Fantasia"., Malynda Strother Taylor
Functions Of Liminality In Literature: A Study Of Georges Bataille's "Le Bleu Du Ciel", Julien Green's "L'Autre", And Assia Djebar's "L'Amour, La Fantasia"., Malynda Strother Taylor
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The term "liminality" originated in the work of two socioanthropologists, Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner; it is descriptive of the middle phase in a rite of passage. Whereas the "betwixt and between" transitional pattern is temporary in tribal societies, it often becomes a way of life in the twentieth century. Although their projects differ greatly, Victor Turner's and Jacques Derrida's mutual interest in border spaces brings them both into this discussion. Some of the same phenomena described by the sociological term, liminality, is discussed philosophically as "undecidability" and "aporia." Liminality functions to link and to investigate three disparate twentieth-century …
