Ontogeny And Ultrastructure Of The Leaf Of Magnolia Grandiflora L., Michael Thomas Postek Jr

The ontogeny and ultrastructure of the evergreen leaf of Magnolia grandiflora L. were studied by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The mature evergreen leaf was also compared with those of six deciduous Magnolia species. The vegetative apex of M. grandiflora can be described using the tunica-corpus and cytohistological zonation concepts. The apex is composed of a biseriate or triseriate tunica overlying a corpus and varies from 180 (mu)m at the minimal stage to 201 (mu)m at the maximal stage. Part I of this dissertation involved the use of the biological insecticides Dipel('(REGTM)), Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, and Elcar('(REGTM)) Baculovirus heliothis for control of Heliothis spp. on cotton in Louisiana. Seven tests with plots large enough to be considered "grower management units" (plot size 8.1 ha or greater) and one small plot test (plot size 1.3 ha) were conducted using biological insecticides. These tests showed that: (1) generally more Heliothis eggs were found in Dipel treated plots; (2) damage to cotton squares following Dipel applications was generally reduced somewhat; (3) damage to cotton squares following the use of Elcar was not …

Endosymbiosis In The Caecum Of The Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.)., Robert Paul West

Studies to investigate possible endosymbiotic relationships within the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), a major pest of soybeans in Louisiana, were conducted. Primary emphasis was placed on the caecum, a region of the digestive tract previously associated with microbial endosymbiosis in insects. By SEM, a monoculture of rod-shaped bacteria measuring 2.5 by 0.5 (mu)m was observed adhering to the caecal crypt walls. Examination of additional specimens revealed various morphological variations including cocci, elongated rods, and rods which were apparently budding, often found within the same specimen. This paper examines causes and consequences of wetland losses in coastal Louisiana. Land loss is a cumulative impact, the result of many impacts both natural and artificial. Natural losses are caused by subsidence, decay of abandoned river deltas, waves, and storms. Artificial losses result from flood-control practices, impoundments, and dredging and subsequent erosion of artificial channels. Wetland loss also results from spoil disposal upon wetlands and land reclamation projects.

Total land loss in Louisiana's coastal zone is at least 4,300 ha/year. Some wetlands are converted to spoil banks and other eco-systems so that wetland losses are probably two to three …

The migration inhibition of guinea pig peritoneal macrophages by a factor(s) from media obtained from blue tongue virus-infected monolayer cultures was studied. Medium from blue tongue virus-infected sheep fetal cell cultures inhibited migration of guinea pig macrophages from agarose droplets. Medium from control cultures and stock virus did not inhibit macrophage migration. Medium containing migration inhibiting factor(s) in vitro induced an inflammatory reaction in the skin of a newborn sheep. The inflammatory reaction was observed 20 h after intradermal inoculation. The skin reaction consisted of infiltrates of mononuclear leukocytes in the superficial dermis. Control medium and stock virus caused no …

16 stallions were castrated and 30 days later assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: testosterone propionate (T, 175 μg/kg BW), estradiol-17β-3-benzoate (E, 44 μg/kg BW), the combination of both steroids (TE) or control (safflower oil). These dosages were administered every other day for 18 days (low dose) and then were doubled (high dose). Treatment at the high dose was continued for 27 days and the geldings were sacrificed. Treatment at the low dose resulted in concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in serum similar to those in intact stallions during the breeding season.
