The Biomechanics Of The Carpometacarpal Joint Of The Thumb., Chinjen A. Ou

Data collected from six left forearms of fresh human cadavers were used to deduce the functional behavior of the muscle-tendon units acting upon the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb. The data supplied direct information regarding tendon excursions and was used to derive moment arms of each tendon over the normal range of thumb motion. Preparation of the cadaver hands included replacement of the eight muscle-tendons crossing the joint with surgical steel suture material and immobilization of the interphalangeal joint and the metacarpophalangeal joint by insertion of a Kirschner-wire (K-wire) through the intrameduallary canal of the phalanges of the thumb. …

Two major contributors to the invention of a feminine iconography in the 1970's are Mary Beth Edelson and Ana Mendieta. Edelson's method of inventing and defining female imagery concerns psychological and historical concepts. Mendieta's use of body art is seen in the form of regeneration symbols, silhouettes, and animal symbols that relate to primitive cultures which are part of her Cuban heritage.

Variability Of The Reverse-Flow Concentration Technique Of Measuring Plankton Respiration, R. Eugene Turner

Results from the reverse-flow concentration method used to determine community plankton respiration vary significantly because of metabolic inactivation or losses of a portion of the concentrated sample during the filtering process. These losses seem to be nearly constant at concentrations greater than 150X. The within sample coefficient of variation is 20-40% and is primarily a result of clumping and inadequate mixing before subsampling. A rapid processing of the samples is critical for best results.
