Group Influence And Cognitive Consistency As Determinants Of Value Change: A Methodological Analysis Of Self-Confrontation Theory., Mark L. Paris

The present study attempted to either extend, modify or challenge Rokeach's (1973) Self-confrontation theory of value change. Rokeach (1973) found that subjects who were confronted with specific self-confrontation messages, which were designed to make differences between their value systems and self-concepts salient, were more likely than control subjects to change the rank-ordering of the values Freedom and Equality in a ranking task containing 18 values. Rokeach explained this phenomenon by invoking the concept of self-dissatisfaction, which he said subjects came to feel as a result of being exposed to the self-confrontation messages. Minimal brain dysfunction (MBD) in children is described in terms of diagnosis, symptomatology, etiology, prevalence, and prognosis. The MBD area is reviewed with reference to brain damage (BD), non-BD, and empirical models of classfication. A rationale is developed for empirically derived categories of MBD using (a) a comprehensive assessment battery, (b) the administration of this battery to BD, MBD, and normal children, (c) a factor analysis of the children's scores on the test variables, and (d) a cluster analysis of all the children based on the similarity of their factor score profiles. To understand fully the human health effects and environmental impact of these hazards, complete chemical characterization or "speciation" studies of these hazards is necessary. A method was developed for the direct determination of cadmium in biological materials. Determination of metals in biological samples was made difficult by the low concentration, the complex matrix, and the small amount of sample generally available. Current methods for this type of analysis involve either a wet-ashing or a dry-ashing step to break down the organic matrix and concentrate the metals present. These procedures often cause positive and/or negative errors due to contamination of the sample or loss of the metal of interest. The described method avoided these sources of error by eliminating sample pretreatment steps. The method made …

Part I. An accurate most-probable-number enumeration method was developed for counting the number of Beggiatoa trichomes from various freshwater sediments. The medium consisted of extracted hay, diluted soil extract, 0.05% sodium acetate, and 15-35 units per ml of catalase. The same enrichment medium, but without the acetate, was the best enrichment medium from which to obtain pure cultures. A total of thirty-two strains of Beggiatoa were isolated from seven different freshwater habitats and were separated into five groups based on several preliminary characteristics. A curriculum plan in environmental education for Louisiana was developed, based on needs established by analyzing the results of testing 1,412 tenth grade students from 53 public secondary schools in Louisiana for their knowledge and opinions about the environment. The instrument used in the survey consisted of 43 cognitive and 20 affective questions. The instrument was developed from objectives selected from other state plans by a panel of 35 scientists and educators from 12 departments at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fifty-four public secondary schools were randomly selected. Fifty-three schools, 98 percent of the sample, returned the answer forms. …

The Unfleshed Eye: A Study Of Intellectual Theism In The Poetry And Criticism Of Yvor Winters., John Martin Finlay

Yvor Winters' early poetry, from 1920 to 1928, was written in free-verse; the aesthetic principles governing it centered on the image "purified" of conceptual content, and consisting of a "fusion" between the natural object being described and the poet's own mind. The result is a kind of naturalistic mysticism, destructive of judgements and evaluations of the conscious intellect. The early poetry also registers the effect of certain scientific theories on Winters' mind; these theories were mechanistic and deterministic in nature, and they turned Winters' world into one in which moral and intellectual values had no reality. Polycross progeny tests and comparisons of advanced seedlings (cultivars) were conducted in 1978 and 1979 to determine the genetic variance, heritability and correlations of several characters in the sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, L. In 1978, 41.8% of the 'L0-323' polycross seedling progeny had copper or rose skin colors and 2.4% had root yields higher than the highest yielding parent plants. In the 1979 polycross progeny test, estimates of heritability for root skin and flesh color were both very low. Root skin color was positively correlated with yield of US #1 roots, total yield of fleshy roots, vine length, and vine …

This is a study of the Southern Review, a cultural quarterly published at Louisiana State University from 1935 to 1942, and edited by Charles Pipkin, Cleanth Brooks, and Robert Penn Warren. The Review is shown to be an important part of American intellectual history in the thirties and forties, of the Southern Renascence in literature, the history of LSU, and the careers of its editors and contributors. Twenty nine isolates of Cochliobolus miyabeanus (Ito & Kuribayashi) Drechsler ex Dastur cultured from leaves and seeds of several rice, Oryza sativa L., varieties obtained from rice growing areas of Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas were tested for pathogenicity on 12 test varieties to determine if physiologically specialized races of this fungus occur in the United States. This study was conducted in the greenhouse at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The objective of this investigation is to describe the Ostracoda of the Paria-Trinidad-Orinoco shelf, and to determine if the observed distribution patterns can be related to measured environmental factors. The study is based on specimens recovered from washed residues and picked slides from 147 stations sampled during the Orinoco Shelf Expedition in 1953. The described fauna includes 133 species in 66 genera, 6 molt groups, and 5 species of uncertain taxonomic designation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychological sex typing and patterns of language usage. Seventy-nine Louisiana State University undergraduate students were categorized according to the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich and Stapp, 1975). Sex type groups included: psychologically androgynous (High Masculine/High Feminine); masculine (High Masculine/Low Feminine); feminine (Low Masculine/High Feminine); and undifferentiated (Low Masculine/Low Feminine), for both male (n = 40) and female (n = 39). A tRNA (adenine-1)-methyltransferase from wheat germ was partially purified 9.6-fold and used to methylate tRNA('Phe) from E. coli. The site of methylation was determined to be the invariant adenine in the T(psi)C loop as revealed by sequence analysis of a pancreatic RNase digest, post-labelled with {(gamma)-('32)P}ATP. The elucidation of this site was preceded by studies on the enzyme itself, with bulk E. coli tRNA used as the substrate. Enzyme optima were determined for pH, temperature, {putrescine} and {magnesium}. Respective values were 7.5, 37(DEGREES)C, 20 mM, and an inactivation as the magnesium concentration was increased. Alliinases have been studied in animals and plants, but relatively little attention has been given to bacterial alliinases. Therefore, an investigation was initiated to determine the prevalence and nature of alliinase systems in bacteria. A method of determining alliinase activity in bacteria was developed. The procedure was based on qualitative or quantitative detection of allicin, by a color reaction with N-ethylmaleimide. Alliinase was found to be present in some strains and absent in others. In still other strains, alliinase seemed to be a variable characteristic. It was speculated that alliin cleavage in bacteria might be accomplished via an inducible cystathionase. …

The feasibility of producing a low cost, easy to use, and flatulence-free product from corn and cowpeas for Nigerian children was investigated. Cowpea slurry was naturally fermented for 48 hours at room temperature. The pH dropped from 6.38 to 4.20. In fermentation with the yeast, pichia guilliermondii Y-2075, for 72 hours at room temperature, the pH dropped to only 5.60. Soaking and wet milling resulted in nutrient losses. Drum drying of the product did not significantly reduce lysine levels, 90% being biologically available in most samples. It is important to determine what is the original chemical form of the pollutant when released in the environment as well as all possible reaction products and their potential hazards. This study was designed to evaluate reading achievement in terms of treatment, (direct concept teaching) and non-treatment, controlling for socioeconomic group, preschool attendance and the level of maternal education. The study population was composed of 117 children in six kindergarten classes in six schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Two schools were chosen at each socioeconomic level to allow for a treatment school and a control school. One class was used at each school. Hypotheses derived from psychoanalytic theory of body image were tested using 80 female cancer outpatients at various stages of the disease. Subjects were administered the following measures: Body-Cathexis Scale, Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and a general information questionnaire. Results showed that body image is significantly related to self image and depression, but no significant relationship was found between body image and interpersonal needs behavior scores. Data also suggested the existence of denial as manifested by low self-criticism, personality integration, interpersonal needs behavior, and depression scores. Experiments have been conducted to determine the feasibility of the bioconversion of cellulose into Single Cell Protein (SCP) using a thermotolerant, cellulolytic strain of Aspergillus terreus. Crude cellulases produced during the growth of fungal biomass were tested for their ability to generate glucose syrups by enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. Studies on continuous cultivation of glucose-limited A. terreus resulted in the development of a highly optimized medium which allowed the organism to achieve similar maximum specific growth rates (umax) measured in batch culture. An adult population survey of 4 species of the noctuid subfamily Plusiinae was conducted in soybean ecosystems of south, south central and north central Louisiana. Sticky-traps baited with the synthetic sex pheromone (Z)-7-dodecen-1-ol acetate, or looplure, were used as the sampling tools for 2 soybean growing seasons. The soybean looper Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) reached the highest densities of the plusiine complex with 4 and 5 generations detected in the southern and central regions of the state. Moth density was greatest at Krotz Springs (south central site) during 1977 and 1978; the lowest levels were detected at Niblett (southern site). Males …

These constructs, perceptual in nature, are self-image and perceived risk. Investigations of the antineoplastic crude extracts of Melampodium cinereum No. 2015B provided low yields of four new cis, cis-germacranolide sesquiterpene lactones which were named melcanthin D (83), E (84), F (87), and G (88). The separations of these closely related compounds were accomplished by reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography. Structure elucidation of melcanthins D to G utilized infrared, ultraviolet, circular dichroism, mass, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic methods combined with spectral correlation with the known compound melcanthin A. An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of either Nezara viridula (L.) egg or nymphal protein in the gut of potential predators was developed. Through the use of molecular gel filtration species specific antigens were obtained from N. viridula eggs and nymphs. The ELISA developed for eggs could detect 7.6 ng of egg protein while the nymphal ELISA could detect 122 ng of the selected nymphal protein. There were 27 species of insects and spiders representing 6 orders and 15 families, tested for both egg and nymphal predation over 2 growing seasons (1977 and 1978). There were 1886 individuals …
