Interdependent Group-Oriented Contingencies: Effects Upon Collateral Behaviors., Verdi Rountree Lethermon Jan 1987

Interdependent Group-Oriented Contingencies: Effects Upon Collateral Behaviors., Verdi Rountree Lethermon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two interdependent group-oriented contingency (g-o-c) systems to improve academic behavior were compared to a no treatment control group. Additionally, the two interdependent group-oriented contingency systems were compared to each other regarding their effects on several collateral behaviors (classroom behavior, social interactions and peer sociometric ratings). Six fourth and fifth grade classes (126 students) were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions. The first treatment group (positive g-o-c) was an interdependent group-oriented contingency system which reinforced overall science performance at or better than a level of 90%. The second treatment group (negative g-o-c) was also an interdependent group-oriented contingency system which discouraged …

Borehole Friction Assessment And Application To Oilfield Casing Design In Directional Wells., Eric Edgar Maidla Jan 1987

Borehole Friction Assessment And Application To Oilfield Casing Design In Directional Wells., Eric Edgar Maidla

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The phenomenon of mechanical friction in the oil well borehole was investigated. Immediate application of such a study is to improve casing design in directional wells. An additional application is the prediction of reciprocating loads in directional wells for cementing purposes, that is recognized to be an effective method to avoid cement channeling through efficient mud displacement. Field studies on the borehole friction coefficient revealed its insensitivity to depth, various well trajectories, size of pipe and its surface configuration, leading to the conclusion that one value of the borehole friction factor can represent a single well. Also there was good …

Characterization Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Variants Generated In Vivo And In Vitro And A Rapid Assay For Virus-Specific Antibody., Paul Murumba Rwambo Jan 1987

Characterization Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Variants Generated In Vivo And In Vitro And A Rapid Assay For Virus-Specific Antibody., Paul Murumba Rwambo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three Shetland ponies (A, B and C) were inoculated with plasma from a pony with clinical signs of equine infectious anemia (EIA) and observed for 165 to 440 days. Clinical signs of EIA marked by high fever (39.5$\sp\circ$C) lasting 2-4 days were observed 2-3 weeks after infection and one to four such episodes occurred in each pony. EIAV was reisolated from plasma by end-point dilution in fetal equine kidney (FEK) cells and a plasma viremia 10$\sp{3.5}$ TCID$\sb{50}$/ml was observed during each episode. A total of seven virus isolates were recovered. Cross-neutralization tests with sequential serum samples showed that four viruses …

Geographic Variation In Morphology And Allozymes Within Tree Squirrels, Sciurus Niger And S. Carolinensis, Of The Lower Mississippi River Valley., Nancy D. Moncrief Jan 1987

Geographic Variation In Morphology And Allozymes Within Tree Squirrels, Sciurus Niger And S. Carolinensis, Of The Lower Mississippi River Valley., Nancy D. Moncrief

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographic variation was studied in fox squirrels, Sciurus niger, and gray squirrels, S. carolinensis, by comparing patterns of differentiation within and between these two sympatric species. Patterns of variation were examined in light of the lower Mississippi River as a potential barrier to dispersal and gene flow in these squirrels. Differences within and between species were analyzed using morphologic (15 cranial and mandibular measurements) and allozymic (35 presumptive gene loci) characters. Geographic patterns of variation among populations were apparent in the morphology and allozymes of both species; patterns of differentiation in morphologic and allozymic characters are similar between species; however, …

The Effects Of Semantic Mapping Instruction On The Text-External Inferences Of College Developmental Readers., Debbie Guice Longman Jan 1987

The Effects Of Semantic Mapping Instruction On The Text-External Inferences Of College Developmental Readers., Debbie Guice Longman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In reading, text-external inferences are made when the reader integrates schemata with text information. Because inference generation occurs within the reader, background knowledge and reading skill affect inferential comprehension. This research consists of two studies to determine, first, whether college developmental and non-developmental readers activate prior knowledge when reading and making inferences (Experiment One) and, second, if direct instruction in semantic mapping increases activation of prior knowledge by developmental readers. The results of Experiment One indicated non-developmental readers with high prior knowledge use prior knowledge more than developmental subjects and that developmental subjects with high prior knowledge use that knowledge …

Planning And Interactive Decision-Making In Expert Elementary Physical Education Teachers., Deborah J. Howell Jan 1987

Planning And Interactive Decision-Making In Expert Elementary Physical Education Teachers., Deborah J. Howell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This paper describes the planning and interactive decision making used by expert elementary physical education teachers as they developed and taught a 5 day unit on basketball dribbling. Secondly, it explores the relation between teachers' planning productivity (number of statements made) and student achievement. Expert elementary physical education teachers (N = 11) provided information regarding their thought processes during planning and interactive decision making. Planning sessions were conducted prior to each lesson with teachers using the "think aloud" technique. All instructional lessons were videotaped. Following each of the first three lessons, teachers were shown a videotape of the lesson and …

The Relation Between Selected Student Characteristics And Activity Patterns In A Required High School Physical Education Class., Karen Martha Greenockle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study described the activity patterns of students in a high school fitness class and explored the structural relations between particular student characteristics and their coded exercise behavior. Exercise behavior was systematically coded during an 8-week jogging unit in 10 high school physical education classes. Additional measures of distance covered, heart rate, perceived exertion, percent of days participated, and fitness level were also collected. Although percent of time spent jogging was low (18%), with no significant gains made in cardiovascular fitness, the amount of time spent jogging, the distance covered, and fitness level were all significantly correlated (r $>$.48, …

Characteristics Of Rumen Fluid And Particulate Microorganisms And The Effect Of Particulate Microorganisms On In Situ Forage Digestibility., John Adeoye Olubobokun Jan 1987

Characteristics Of Rumen Fluid And Particulate Microorganisms And The Effect Of Particulate Microorganisms On In Situ Forage Digestibility., John Adeoye Olubobokun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of diet and time after feeding on microbial crude protein (CP) and dry matter (DM) associated with undigested rumen particles was investigated using diaminopimelic acid (DAPA) as a microbial marker. In a subsequent experiment, in situ CP and DM digestibilities were corrected for microbial contamination of non-masticated and masticated (M) forages. Particle-associated (PA) microorganisms had a higher (P $<$.01) concentration of organic matter (OM) than fluid microorganisms 2 and 23 h after feeding. Bacterial fraction had a higher (P $<$.01) concentration of CP than protozoal fraction. However, the quantity of OM, CP and DAPA per ml of strained rumen fluid equivalent were higher (P $<$.01) in the protozoal than in respective bacterial fractions. In experiment two, CP and DAPA concentrations (%) and quantity (mg/ml SRFE) of OM, CP and DAPA were constant over time (P $>$.10) in fluid, loosely-associated (LA) and firmly-associated (FA) populations. Mean CP and DAPA concentrations were in the order fluid $>$ LA $>$ FA and fluid = FA $$ fluid (P =.07). Over 50% of the PA population …

Conformational Studies Of Carnitine And Acetylcarnitine: Design And Synthesis Of Active-Site Probes Of Carnitine Acetyltransferase., William Jay Colucci Jan 1987

Conformational Studies Of Carnitine And Acetylcarnitine: Design And Synthesis Of Active-Site Probes Of Carnitine Acetyltransferase., William Jay Colucci

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The conformations of carnitine (Cn) and acetylcarnitine (AcCn) have been investigated through a combination of methods. The solid-state structures of their zwitter-ionic forms have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analyses. The crystal structures reveal different backbone conformations for the two molecules. Carnitine exists in an extended conformation (a,g $\sp-$ conformations for the C1-C2-C3-C4 and N1-C4-C3-O3 torsion angles, respectively), while AcCn exhibits a folded conformation ($g\sp-,g\sp-$). The solution conformations of Cn and AcCn have been investigated by high resolution $\sp1$H NMR coupling data. A simple equation has been developed for the prediction of torsion angles from $\sp3 J$ (HCCH) coupling constants. …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Usefulness Of Current Cost Information In Merger Prediction., Robert Kuaterng Su Jan 1987

An Empirical Investigation Of The Usefulness Of Current Cost Information In Merger Prediction., Robert Kuaterng Su

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The usefulness of current cost (CC) information, as compared to historical cost (HC) information, has been a focus of debate over the last decade. Inconsistent research findings concerning this question suggest that additional evidence is needed. Given the intensive merger activity in recent years and the significance of mergers to the economy and shareholders, this study empirically investigated the usefulness of current cost information in merger prediction. Fifty-seven firms that were merged between 1981 and 1984 were selected from the FASB databank, and an equal number of nonmerged firms were matched with the merged firms. Using the subsample for 1981-82, …

A Numerical Analysis Of Heterojunction Bipolar Devices., Freidoon Mehrad Jan 1987

A Numerical Analysis Of Heterojunction Bipolar Devices., Freidoon Mehrad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Numerical simulation plays an important role in the design, analysis and fabrication of semiconductor devices. In this work, a computer program is developed to obtain a one-dimensional steady-state constant temperature current-voltage characteristics of diodes and bipolar transistors fabricated from materials having position dependent material properties such as band-gap, electron affinity, permittivity and the density of states functions. The general formulation of the problem allows for an unambiguous choice of reference potential. The modular form of the program allows for the choice of appropriate recombination processes for each of the materials used in the structure. The program can adjust the step …

Repricing Made-To-Order Production Programs., Mehmet Murat Tarimcilar Jan 1987

Repricing Made-To-Order Production Programs., Mehmet Murat Tarimcilar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Planned procurement quantities in made-to-order production programs are often altered after production has started. Cost analysts are concerned about providing cost estimates for alternatives to ongoing programs. This research develops a new model for repricing made-to-order production programs. It is an effort to integrate a theoretically developed production phase prediction model into a comprehensive repricing model. The production model is defined by a cost function that employs the impact of two cost determinants, production rate and learning. It is supported by economic theory and is consistent with our knowledge of made-to-order production process. The theoretical model links the direct costs …

A Search For Neutrino Oscillations., Wai Ching Choi Jan 1987

A Search For Neutrino Oscillations., Wai Ching Choi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A search for neutrino oscillation has been carried out at LAMPF (the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility). The engineering run in the 1986 cycle has demonstrated that the detector works as designed. The probability of oscillation between two neurino types $\nu\sb1$ and $\nu\sb2$ can be parameterized by two variables: (1) the difference between the squares of the masses of two mass eigenstates $\delta$m$\sp2$ $(\equiv\ \vert$m$\sb1\sp2$ - m$\sb2\sp2\vert),$ and (2) the mixing angle $(\theta)$ between the two states. In this experiment, we set limits on the oscillations $\bar\nu\sb\mu$ $\to$ $\bar\nu\sb{\rm e}$ and $\nu\sb{\rm e}$ $\to$ $\bar\nu\sb{\rm e}$ as a function of …

The Effect Of Small Zwitterions And Tetraalkylammonium Ions Upon The Aggregation And Solubilization Properties Of Cationic Micellar Systems., Barry Joseph Corona

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The surface tension and solubilizations of a number of surfactant solutions were measured in the hope of gaining additional understanding of the structure of micelles. A number of compounds were added to micellar solutions of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide. These additives had structural characteristics that were similar to the structure of the cationic head group of the surfactant monomers. The additives were the quaternary ammonium halides; tetramethylammonium bromide, tetraethylammonium bromide, and tetrapropylammonium bromide, and the zwitterionic compounds; glycine, sarcosine, N,N, dimethyl glycine, and betaine. This project was initiated to ascertain whether these particular additives would actually enter the micelles and by so …

Resolution Proof Technique In Linear Temporal Logic., Krzysztof Jan Kochut Jan 1987

Resolution Proof Technique In Linear Temporal Logic., Krzysztof Jan Kochut

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents a resolution proof technique for Propositional Linear Temporal Logic of discrete time with the "Until" operator. The presented proof technique stems from the resolution method developed by L. Farinas del Cerro and A. Cavalli. However, their method is incomplete, and their completeness proof, as originally reported, is incorrect. Unlike Farinas's method, our proof technique incorporated the "Until" operator, which is a very powerful and useful in describing complex temporal relationships which are common in many areas of computer science. Our technique is also proved complete. The presented resolution method for linear temporal logic is similar to classical …

Adaptive Grid Solution Procedure For Elliptic Flows., Fadl Hassan Moukalled Jan 1987

Adaptive Grid Solution Procedure For Elliptic Flows., Fadl Hassan Moukalled

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis deals with the formulation of a computationally efficient adaptive grid system for two-dimensional elliptic flow and heat transfer problems. The formulation is in a curvilinear coordinate system so that flow in irregular geometries can be easily handled. An equal order pressure-velocity scheme is formulated in this thesis to solve the flow equations. An adaptive grid solution procedure is developed in which the grid is automatically refined in regions of high errors and consecutive calculations are performed between the coarse grid and adapted grid regions in the same spirit as that of a Multi-Grid method. In orthogonal coordinate systems, …

Follower Incremental Compliance As A Function Of Leader Self-Monitoring Skills And Leader Situational Control (Discretion)., Tanya Cheer Clemons Jan 1986

Follower Incremental Compliance As A Function Of Leader Self-Monitoring Skills And Leader Situational Control (Discretion)., Tanya Cheer Clemons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the moderating effects of two task variables--task structure and leader discretion--on the relationship between leader self-monitoring and the organizational outcomes of subordinate satisfaction, commitment, and job performance. It was hypothesized that task structure would be a negative moderator of the leadership-organizational outcomes relationships, whereas leader discretion would be a positive moderator. That is, leader self-monitoring would be significantly correlated with measures of subordinate satisfaction, commitment, and job performance when task structure was low and leader discretion was high. Data were collected from 58 upper-middle level managers of a large chemical processing plant, their 58 immediate superiors, and …

Corporate Ownership, Dividend Policy, And Capital Structure Under Asymmetric Information., Upinder Singh Dhillon Jan 1986

Corporate Ownership, Dividend Policy, And Capital Structure Under Asymmetric Information., Upinder Singh Dhillon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the role of insider ownership in the dividend policy and the leverage decision of the firm. An asymmetric information model is developed with the proportion of equity owned by insiders, dividend payout, and debt as signals of firm value. Analysis of the model yields testable hypotheses that insider ownership is negatively related to the payout and debt ratio of a firm. Cross-sectional regression analysis of leverage and payout ratio of the insider ownership is performed to test for the hypotheses. The hypothesis that firms with large insider holdings have lower leverage than firms with small insider holdings …

Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of A Gene For Beta-Glucosidase From A Bacillus Cereus/Cellulomonas Sp. Hybrid Bacterium Derived Through Protoplast Fusion., Eun Soo Han Jan 1986

Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of A Gene For Beta-Glucosidase From A Bacillus Cereus/Cellulomonas Sp. Hybrid Bacterium Derived Through Protoplast Fusion., Eun Soo Han

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A (beta)-glucosidase gene was cloned from a cellulolytic bacterium, which was obtained by hybrid-formation between Bacillus cereus and a Cellulomonas sp. through protoplast fusion, into Escherichia coli plasmid pBR322 using recombinant DNA techniques. E. coli strain transformants of JM83 harboring this cloned plasmid were able to utilize cellobiose as a carbon source. (beta)-glucosidase activity was assayed in these cells by P-nitrophenyl (beta)-D-glucopyranoside (PNPG) hydrolysis. Hybridization of the cloned DNA fragment with DNA from the hybrid organism was performed by Southern transfer (92) and DNA/DNA dot blot procedures. The hybridization data strongly suggested that the DNA cloned into pBR322 was from …

The Effect Of Educational Technology Variables On Elementary Education Student Achievement (Instructional Materials, Educational Media)., Deborah Scruggs Miller Jan 1986

The Effect Of Educational Technology Variables On Elementary Education Student Achievement (Instructional Materials, Educational Media)., Deborah Scruggs Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether educational technology variables differentiate between "effective" and "ineffective" elementary schools. It was hypothesized that "effective schools" use educational media in instruction more frequently than "ineffective schools". It was also expected that "effective schools" use educational media in qualitatively superior ways to "ineffective schools". In addition, it was predicted that "effective schools" would have better prepared teachers in educational media and teachers with more years of teaching experience than "ineffective schools". The sample consisted of fourteen elementary schools located in 12 school districts throughout Louisiana. Each school was determined to be either …

A Monte Carlo Investigation Of Nonparametric One-Way Multivariate Analysis Of Variance (Rank Transformation, Normal Scores, Manova Test, Robustness)., Geon Seek Myung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research is concerned with the rank and normal score transform procedures in which the usual parametric procedures are applied to the ranks of the data and the normal scores based on the ranks instead of the original data in one-way multvariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Four MANOVA test criteria were compared in terms of the parametric, rank and normal score procedures: (1) Roy's largest root, R, (2) Lawley-Hotelling trace, T, (3) Wilks's likelihood ratio, W and (4) Bartlett-Nanda-Pillai trace, V. A Monte Carlo investigation was designed to compare the procedures in terms of control of Type I error and …

Explicit Instruction In Story Structure: Effects On Preschoolers' Listening Comprehension (Story Grammar)., Joanne L. Ratliff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether instruction in story structure improved preschoolers' comprehension of stories. Preschool children were pretested on: (a) oral story production, (b) story rule knowledge (structural elements), (c) free recall of a story, and (d) probed recall. Students who were identified as less skilled by these four measures were randomly assigned to one of three groups: instruction, story, or control. The instruction group received two weeks of explicit instruction in story structure based on a story rule format. The story group listened to the same rule format. The story group listened to the …

Benthic Microfloral Production On The West And Gulf Coasts Of The United States: Techniques For Analyzing Dynamic Data (Entropy Data Analysis)., Gary Paul Shaffer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study was to compare benthic microfloral production on the west and gulf coasts of the U.S.A., and to determine what factors govern that production. Intensive, month long field studies were conducted at two sites in a salt marsh lagoon (Mugu Lagoon) in southern California and at two sites in a shallow water estuary (Barataria Estuary) in southwest Louisiana. For both studies, fluctuations in production during a single month approximated those measured previously over an entire year: daily production varied from 0 to 1500 mg C (.) m('-2). A comparison was made between the sources of error …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The thermal death time of Clostridium botulinum type E spores in crawfish tailmeat was determined at temperatures ranging from 80 to 95(DEGREES)C. Crawfish paste containing 10('6) spores per gram was dispensed into 16 x 125 mm test tubes, which were subsequently placed in water baths preset at the test temperatures. Sample tubes were removed from the baths at predetermined time intervals and incubated anaerobically for up to two months. The D value for the spores in crawfish tailmeat was determined from the corrected time of exposure to the heat and survival data using three methods of calculation. D values were …

Moral Evaluation: An Investigation Of Developmental Patterns In The Use Of Cognitive Algebra (Information Integration)., Anthony Herman Speier Jr Jan 1986

Moral Evaluation: An Investigation Of Developmental Patterns In The Use Of Cognitive Algebra (Information Integration)., Anthony Herman Speier Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Information integration theory suggests that differences in the moral judgments of children and adults is an example of a development process of information integration where younger children employ a unidimensional integration rule, and older children and adults employ multidimensional integration rules. Studies that utilize the information integration approach involve single-episode stories in which two or three levels of intention and consequence story cues are manipulated in a within-subjects factorial design. The present study manipulated two sources of information about the story protagonist, as well as information about his intentions and the consequences. The four variables manipulated were: (a) personal goodness …

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity Stress On Plasma Progesterone, Luteinizing Hormone And Cortisol Profiles Following Cloprostenol Injection In Cycling Holstein Cows In A Controlled Environment (Environmental Physiology, Reproduction, Prostaglandins)., Anandarajah Sri Kanda Kumar Jan 1986

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity Stress On Plasma Progesterone, Luteinizing Hormone And Cortisol Profiles Following Cloprostenol Injection In Cycling Holstein Cows In A Controlled Environment (Environmental Physiology, Reproduction, Prostaglandins)., Anandarajah Sri Kanda Kumar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of heat stress on plasma profiles of progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and cortisol was evaluated following cloprostenol (500 (mu)g) induced luteolysis in lactating and non-lactating cows in a controlled environment. Another experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of heat stress on the superovulatory response in lactating cows. The plasma progesterone, LH and total estrogen concentrations were not altered by heat stress (P > 0.05) when the average rectal temperatures of both lactating and non-lactating cows were raised to 39.83(DEGREES)C (103.7(DEGREES)F). However, plasma cortisol was significantly suppressed (P < 0.05) during heat stress. Luteolysis was followed by a preovulatory LH surge in all cows following cloprostenol and thus heat stress did not appear to alter the responsiveness of the corpus luteum to cloprostenol and the factors which regulate the hypothalamic control of LH release. Preovulatory LH peaks were preceded by total estrogen peaks and therefore heat stress did not appear to alter the positive feedback of estrogens from the preovulatory follicles to release LH from the pituitary gland. The magnitude of the diurnal variation of cortisol was higher during lower stress. LH peaks were seen irrespective of cortisol concentrations during both higher and lower stress treatments. However, LH peaks coincided with those of cortisol and total estrogens during lower stress treatments in both lactating and non-lactating cows. An altered diurnal variation in rectal temperatures was seen following LH peaks during lower stress. Fifteen transferable embryos were recovered during lower stress (15/34 or 44%) compared to one transferable embryo (1/4 or 25%) during higher stress (P > 0.05) in the superovulation study. Thus it appears that heat stress …

The Spatial And Temporal Variability Of The Polar Front In The Sea Of Japan (Polar Front, Eddies, Thermal Gradient)., Taebo Shim Jan 1986

The Spatial And Temporal Variability Of The Polar Front In The Sea Of Japan (Polar Front, Eddies, Thermal Gradient)., Taebo Shim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The spatial and temporal variability of the Polar Front in the Sea of Japan is investigated by analyzing both the conventional hydrographic data from the files of NODC and sea surface temperature (SST) data and sea height data derived from satellites. The root mean square variability of the annual mean frontal position, which extends from 38.5(DEGREES)N near the Korean Peninsula to 41.5(DEGREES)N near the Tsugaru Strait, is about 100 to 120 km in the western and central region and is 300 km in the eastern region. The Polar Frontal zone appears to be unstable in summer, suggested by the large …
