Effects Of Prereading Vocabulary Strategies On Vocabulary And Comprehension Of Basal Stories By Primary Children., Dana G. Thames

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on the instructional use of three prereading vocabulary strategies, Directed Reading Activity, Reconciled Reading Lesson and List-Group-Label, as a means for improving vocabulary and comprehension of basal reader stories. Subjects were 66 average and above-average second-grade students. Data were collected over a seven-day period with instruction and post-testing occurring on alternating days. Data were analyzed in three ways. First, a repeated measures analysis of variance on the pre- and post-test vocabulary scores indicated that statistically significant amounts of learning took place within each instructional group. Second, an analysis of variance was used to assess the effects of …

An Adiabatic Study Of The Positronium Negative Ion And Other Three-Particle Systems., Javier Botero Jan 1986

An Adiabatic Study Of The Positronium Negative Ion And Other Three-Particle Systems., Javier Botero

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In an effort to unravel the dependence of the dynamics of three-bound-particle systems on the relative masses of the particles, an adiabatic treatment in hyperspherical coordinates is used to study the ground state and some doubly excited states of Ps('-) (positronium negative ion) and other three-particle systems, including H('-) and M('-) (muonium negative ion). Two different methods for the solution of the adiabatic eigenvalue equation are presented; one uses a "prediagonalized" basis of hyperspherical harmonics, and the other uses an asymptotic basis which consists of hydrogenic functions for the positronium. Potential curves for Ps('-) and M('-) in the ('1)S('e), ('1)P('o), …

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne Jan 1986

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Libro de buen amor, a fourteenth century Spanish text by Juan Ruiz, is an extensive and complex poem rich in partially hidden messages. Thirty-five popular medieval tales form an integral part of the body of the work, and convey important information to the reader through the text of the tales and through the storytelling context created by the author. Scholars have studied the tales most often from an historical perspective, and analyzed them separately from the central narrative; or have studied the textual materials with little emphasis on the function of the tales. Although such studies provide valuable information, …

Skill And Knowledge Base Attributes Of Young Baseball Players., Charlotte Anne Humphries Jan 1986

Skill And Knowledge Base Attributes Of Young Baseball Players., Charlotte Anne Humphries

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Members of three baseball teams for 13-to-14-year-olds and four teams for 10-to-12-year olds participated in a season-long study of their skills, knowledge base, and game performance. Subjects were weighed, height measured, skill tested at base running speed and throwing for distance and accuracy, game performance coded (position, control of ball, correctness of decision as to play to make, and proper execution of that play), and took a multiple-choice baseball test. Coaches supplied batting averages, and ranked their players into three levels (best, medium, and poorest players). As the lowest ranked players generally got little playing time (the league had no …

Alcohol And Drug Abuse Subtypes: Differentiation Using The Macandrew Scale., James T. Russell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC scale) has been found generally to differentiate alcoholics from control subjects. Some researchers have proposed it measures a general tendency to abuse drugs as well. The MAC scale's construct has been purported to tap unstable psychopathy at its high end and neuroticism at its low. The present study attempted to establish whether the MAC scale alone, the standard MMPI scales alone, or the MAC scale plus the standard MMPI scales and/or other MMPI research and Wiggins content scales provide the most effective differentiation of alcoholics and drug abusers from medical controls in a VA inpatient …

Seasonal Variation In The Total Volume Of Leydig Cells In Stallions Is Explained By Variation In Cell Number Rather Than Cell Size., L. Johnson, D. L. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Stereological methods were employed in two studies with stallions 1) to determine if seasonal variation in the total volume of Leydig cells is a function of cell number or cell size and 2) to characterize the annual cycle of the Leydig cell population. In the first study, numbers of Leydig cells were calculated for 28 adult (4-20 yr) stallions in the breeding or nonbreeding seasons from nuclear volume density (percentage of the decapsulated testicular volume), parenchymal volume (decapsulated testicular volume), and the volume of individual Leydig cell nuclei. The average volume of the individual Leydig cells was calculated as the …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Bacterial Iron-Sulfur Proteins (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Magnetic Circular Dichroism)., Deborah Ellen Bennett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Iron-sulfur proteins play a vital role in metabolism; mediating such life-sustaining processes as aerobic and anaerobic respiration, nitrogen fixation, and photosynthesis. This work employs low temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-visible spectroscopy to characterize the iron-sulfur clusters of the following bacterial proteins: Azotobacter vinelandii ferredoxinI, Thermus thermophilus ferredoxin, Escherichia coli nitrate reductase and the rubredoxin and ferredoxin from Clostridium pasteurianum. Novel 3Fe-xS clusters were identified in A. vinelandii FdI, T. thermophilus Fd, ferricyanide treated C. pasteurianum Fd, and E. coli nitrate reductase. The uniformity of the magnetic and electronic properties of these clusters in both …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Mitochondrial Iron Sulfur Proteins (Succinate Dehydrogenase, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Fumarate Reductase)., Joyce Elaine Morningstar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aerobic respiration is linked to oxidative phosphorylation and involves a redox-linked proton translocation across the mitochondrial inner membrane. Deeper understanding of the mechanism of mitochondrial electron transport requires detailed characterization of the redox centers present in respiratory enzyme complexes. A combination of low temperature MCD spectra and magnetization data, with parallel EPR, CD, and UV-visible experiments, has been used to characterize the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the iron sulfur centers in respiratory enzymes. The enzymes studied were those associated with electron transport in mammalian mitochondria, with comparative studies of similar enzymes and proteins in heterotropic bacteria. The results …

Rearrangements Of Alpha-Halosilanes And Conformational Analysis Of Silanes., Rayomand Jal Unwalla Jan 1986

Rearrangements Of Alpha-Halosilanes And Conformational Analysis Of Silanes., Rayomand Jal Unwalla

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A number of (alpha)-halosilanes, some which are chiral at carbon, have been prepared. Lewis acid-catalyzed rearrangements and thermal rearrangements were performed on ((alpha)-chloroethyl)diphenylmethylsilane. Both the rearrangements proceed cleanly; the major product is formed by the migration of the phenyl group from silicon to carbon. The rearranged product mixture was subjected to a Kumada-type oxidation in which the silicon-carbon is cleaved stereospecifically. Thus the principle has been established that a clean rearrangement can be carried out in a manner which will allow determination of the stereochemistry at the carbon center. Preliminary kinetic studies of the thermolysis of ((alpha)-chlorobenzyl)dimethylphenylsilanes containing p-substituents in …

Blood pressure levels, anthropometric parameters, and dietary intakes were assessed in 1981 and 1983 in a population of black (n = 236) and white (n = 296) adolescent girls, aged 14 and 16 years in 1983. The 14-year-old black girls exhibited significantly higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures than whites in both years. Body weight and Quetelet index were more strongly associated with blood pressure than were height and triceps skinfold thickness. Correcting blood pressures for weight, Quetelet index, 2-year changes in height, and age at menarche decreased in each case (but did not negate) the observed race differences …

Surface Effects On The Diamagnetic Susceptibility And Other Properties Of A Low-Temperature Electron Gas, Lipo Wang, R. F. Oconnell

Faculty Publications

A general formulation is developed for determining the free energy of a Fermi gas contained in an arbitrary smooth external potential barrier and in a weak magnetic field, in the low-temperature limit. The Wigner phase-space formalism of quantum mechanics is used as a calculational tool. Explicit formulas are given, which enable one to compute surface and temperature effects on various physical properties (susceptibility, specific heat, etc.) of the system. Some simple examples are constructed for the diamagnetic-susceptibility calculation, which show that the corrections depend on the form of the surface potential barrier and the size of the material, but, in …

The primary objective of this study was to determine the extent to which dietary behavior changes were made by the EFNEP participants in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, and whether or not they were retained after they were graduated for six months but less than one year. Data were obtained by personal interviews conducted by paraprofessional nutrition aides on the 208 homemakers who participated in the EFNEP during 1983-86. The 24-hour dietary recall instrument was the basis upon which homemakers' diets were evaluated. The dependent variable in this study was the mean difference in dietary scores at three different points in time …

Estimation Of Nonlinear Frontier Functions And Efficiency Measurements For Airframe Production Programs., Banani Dhar Jan 1986

Estimation Of Nonlinear Frontier Functions And Efficiency Measurements For Airframe Production Programs., Banani Dhar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research examines measures of economic efficiency in aircraft production. In particular, a type of nonlinear frontier estimation is contrasted with more traditional methods for estimating a dynamic cost function. This cost function is grounded in economic theory, and it is consistent with our knowledge of the aircraft production process. The model includes the effects of both learning and production rate on total program costs. Our model differs from more traditional cost specifications in that we make no attempt to measure production rate. Our model links direct labor requirements to fixed delivery schedules, under the assumption that the firm attempts …

Solubility was determined by three methods: hot water-refluxed 1 hour; cold water-mixed 30 minutes; and cold water-homogenized 5 seconds. Ammonia production was measured after 2, 4, and 6 hour incubations. Disappearance of crude protein and dry …

Development Of A New Conductivity Model For Shaly Sand Interpretation., Pedro L. Silva Jan 1986

Development Of A New Conductivity Model For Shaly Sand Interpretation., Pedro L. Silva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, a new theoretical conductivity model for shaly sands is developed. The model is based on dual water concepts. In addition, the equivalent counterion conductivity changes as the diffuse electrical double layer expands and is then a function of temperature, shaliness, and of the conductivity of the far water. The formation resistivity factor used in the model is independent of shaliness. A method to calculate the equivalent counterion conductivity is proposed. This method is based on treating the double layer region as a hypothetical electrolyte, the properties of which are derived from basic electrochemistry theory. The new model …

Molecular Studies Of T-Lymphocytes From Bovine Leukemia Virus-Infected Cattle., Diana Lynn Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Highly specific monoclonal antibodies and microfluorimetry were used to determine the absolute number of B and T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infected cattle. The peripheral blood lymphocyte populations from BLV-infected cattle were elevated when compared to BLV-negative animals. The increase in the lymphocyte population in the aleukemic (AL) animals was due to an increase in T lymphocytes. In the PL animals the increase was due mainly to an increase of B lymphocytes but also to an increase of T lymphocytes. The PL animals showed a significantly higher number of surface immunoglobulin positive cells (sIg('+)) …

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Diverter System Performance., Frederick Eugene Beck Jan 1986

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Diverter System Performance., Frederick Eugene Beck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diverter systems, used as an alternate means of well control while drilling surface hole, have a demonstrated history of failure. Of particular interest in this dissertation are failures related to excessive backpressure, such as mechanical failure of surface equipment or the loss of the rig due to foundation collapse. Critical flow effects, neglected by current design practices, are shown both experimentally and theoretically to have a significant effect on backpressure. Critical flow is modeled by quantifying exit pressures and by including fluid acceleration pressure losses in backpressure calculations. "Systems analysis" of diverter operations is developed and applied to a field …

This study examined the acceptability of social skills treatment methods as rated by elementary school teachers. Independent variables such as target problem (aggressive versus withdrawn social skills deficits), treatment method (modeling-coaching versus overcorrection), and outcome information (weak versus strong therapeutic effects) were systematically manipulated to determine which treatment method teachers preferred to remediate social skills deficits in their classrooms. Also of interest was the effect of outcome information on teachers' ratings of acceptability. Two measured independent variables included were the Knowledge Assessment and the Intervention Use Assessment to determine teachers' knowledge of treatments presented and how frequently treatments had been …

Mechanisms Of The Atmospheric Corrosion Of Weathering Steel., Mehmet Baha Kuban Jan 1986

Mechanisms Of The Atmospheric Corrosion Of Weathering Steel., Mehmet Baha Kuban

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The atmospheric corrosion mechanisms of weathering steel have been investigated through the use of both field and laboratory techniques. Laboratory techniques included time-transformation studies of the oxide-hydroxides (gamma)-FeOOH and (beta)-FeOOH under controlled temperature conditions in air and in vaccum, as well as electrochemical testing for the characterization of the dissolution and film formation kinetics. Potentiostatic tests with set potentials in the immediate vicinity of the open circuit potential of the weathering steel were found to simulate very well the conditions of atmospheric exposure. 0.1% NaCl solutions as well as other concentrations were generally used for comparison purposes. The specific adsorption …

Genomic Organization And Sequence Analysis Of Rabbit Muscle Phosphofructokinase Gene., Chan Ping Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A rabbit genomic clone containing the muscle phosphofructokinase (PFK) gene of approximately 17 kilobase pairs encoding 779 amino acids was isolated and sequenced. This gene contains 22 exons, ranging from 45 to 190 base pairs, and is split by 21 introns of 73-3500 base pairs. Eighty six percent of this gene is occupied by introns. An additional incomplete intron is found in the 5' flanking region, while an Alu-like sequence is identified in the 3' flanking region. The amino acid sequence translated from the coding sequence of this gene reveals 29 residues (amino acid numbers 479-507) which complete a previously …

Populations, Selection Mechanisms, And Performance: A Study Of Banks In The State Of Louisiana., Merle John Peper Jan 1986

Populations, Selection Mechanisms, And Performance: A Study Of Banks In The State Of Louisiana., Merle John Peper

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many theoretical paradigms have been created in an effort to successfully measure organizational performance. One of the more recent approaches, known as the "population perspective," focuses on populations of organizations as its unit of analysis, and attempts to explain the relationships among organizations, populations, and environments. These relationships are explored by (a) grouping organizations into homogeneous clusters or populations, and (b) assessing alternative selection mechanisms or predictors of organizational prosperity. The studying of populations help define the organizational forms allowing survival within an environment, while increasing the generalizability of the study's findings. Studying selection mechanisms within their populations allows the …

Olfactometric In Situ Soil Exploration: Development Of The Electro-Odo-Cone., Mohammad Mohammadi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The suitability of the electro-odo-cell (EOC) for detection of organic chemical contaminants in ambient air and soil strata was investigated under laboratory conditions. The existing concept of the EOC was modified to incorporate the system into a state of the art subsurface soil investigation probe (electric cone penetrometer). Partial theoretical support for EOC operation was developed. The state of the art in reactive solute transport in soils was reviewed. From this review inferences were made about time of travel of a permeant in soil samples, which was consequently compared with time of initial response of the laboratory prototype cone penetrometer …
