Anthropocentrism: Construct Validity And Measurement., Edward W. Chandler
Anthropocentrism: Construct Validity And Measurement., Edward W. Chandler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The values, attitudes, and beliefs which humans hold regarding mankind's role in the universe must be understood if the natural environment is to be preserved. In this study, the utility of the construct "anthropocentrism" as an organizing principle for understanding consistencies among individuals' attitudes regarding man's role in nature was explored. Anthropocentrism was defined as a doctrine which posits humanity as the center of the universe and sees the well being of mankind as the ultimate purpose of things. The various attitudinal manifestations and historical roots of anthropocentrism were explored, and the sparse empirical literature relevant to this construct was …
Methane Production From Alkaline Food Waste., Wilson Thomas Gautreaux Jr
Methane Production From Alkaline Food Waste., Wilson Thomas Gautreaux Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Anaerobic digestion of an alkaline food waste for methane production was investigated. The waste generated by potato processing contained significant quantities of carbohydrate degradation products and sodium carbonate. Anaerobic digestion was determined to be a reliable process for waste treatment and methane production. The high sodium levels did not inhibit anaerobic digestion at a substrate concentration of 1.0 wt % alkaline peel solids. Single and two-stage (separate acid, methane stages) anaerobic digestion systems were studied. In two-stage bench-scale studies at 37(DEGREES)C, methane production averaged 0.28 m('3)/kg COD feed or 0.65 m('3)/(m('3)(.)d) in a settled bacterial sludge methane fermenter with a …
The Forgiving Landscape: The Poetry Of William Stafford., Malovika Mukerji
The Forgiving Landscape: The Poetry Of William Stafford., Malovika Mukerji
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There is a wholeness and a sanity in William Stafford's vision that arises out of his allegiance to the authentic elements of our experience. These elements include the vital but continually imperiled wilderness, the human landscape of the past comprised of family, friends, and lovers, and the eternal and inescapable rhythms of time, death, mutability, and terror. In his own words, Stafford is seeking to embody in his work "the unanalyzed impressions of holiness" that the world thrusts at him. By temperament and by choice, Stafford is alienated from the so-called confessional school of poetry. Instead, he writes in the …
Mitotic Triggers In The Cell Cycle: Phase Dependency Of Cleavage Advance On The Chromosome Cycle In Parthenogenetically Activated Sea Urchin Eggs., Barbara Ellen Wolfanger Belisle
Mitotic Triggers In The Cell Cycle: Phase Dependency Of Cleavage Advance On The Chromosome Cycle In Parthenogenetically Activated Sea Urchin Eggs., Barbara Ellen Wolfanger Belisle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the sea urchin egg, metabolic activation, DNA synthesis and the chromosome cycle can be induced with parthenogenic activators (NH(,4)Cl or procaine) although no spontaneous cleavage will occur. To determine the effects of these agents on other cell cycle events, eggs from four species of sea urchins were activated with NH(,4)Cl or procaine and then fertilized at different times of the chromosome cycle. These eggs show a decrease in the time to first cleavage which is apparently coupled to the parthenogenecally induced chromosome cycle. The advance is seen whether the activated eggs are fertilized during the first or second chromosome …

Indigenism And Feminism In The Prose Fiction Of Rosario Castellanos., George Alexander St. John Robinson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The novel of Indian concern has had a long vogue in Latin America, where it is known alternately as novela indianista or novela indigenista. This tradition in the novel has produced such well known works as Lopez y Fuentes' El indio, Alcides Arguedas' Raza de bronce, Jorge Icaza's Huasipungo and Ciro Alegr(')ia's El mundo es ancho y ajeno, all published between 1919 and 1941. These novels seek to illustrate the deplorable conditions of life in Indian communities from Mexico to Bolivia. In so doing, however, the Indian characters of these novels are generally reduced to single dimensional characters devoid of …

The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey
The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Linguistic skepticism and the resultant awareness of the limits of language can be traced back to Hamann, Herder, and Humboldt, through Romanticism and French Symbolism, up to modern times. What has come to be called the crisis of language (Sprachkrise) can be viewed as one segment of a broader, multi-media phenomenon. The intensity of this crisis is concentrated in Austro-Hungary in the waning days of the Habsburg Monarchy. From this time forward supersensitivity to language remains a strongly Austrian phenomenon and can be followed through the European, German-language, and Austrian movements of this century, up to the founding of the …

Remarque's 'Weltanschauung': A Study In Fictional Dualism., Ingrid Ehrmann Gross
Remarque's 'Weltanschauung': A Study In Fictional Dualism., Ingrid Ehrmann Gross
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this study was to examine Remarque's Weltanschauung as expressed through his novels. Remarque sees the world negatively when he regards it as a whole. This all-encompassing world, the macrocosm, is defined by two basic factors: the evil side of man's nature, and the existence of death. The world, as Remarque views it, is not ruled according to a divine plan but is a world of man's own making. Because man has been unable to keep in check his tendencies for committing evil, he has brought about the events which characterize the first half of the twentieth century: …
Studies On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Normal And Diabetic Rats., Beverly Ann Bauer
Studies On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Normal And Diabetic Rats., Beverly Ann Bauer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The specific activities of phosphofructokinase, aldolase, and pyruvate kinase was diminished in crude extracts from skeletal muscle of streptozotocin diabetic rats, whereas the activities of glucosephosphate isomerase and phosphoglucomutase were not changed. The decreased phosphofructokinase activity was shown to be independent of allosteric control, and it could be reversed by insulin treatment. A rapid and mild method for the purification of phosphofructokinase from rat skeletal muscle were developed. The partially purified enzyme from muscle of normal and streptozotocin diabetic rats showed identical Michaelis constants for ATP and equal sensitivity to inhibition by excess of ATP. Extracts of quick-frozen muscle from …

Ethyl Methanesulfonate (Ems) And Diethylnitrosamine (Den) Effect On Germ Cells Of Drosophila Melanogaster., Haimei Huang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
With autoradiography and fluorescent stain techniques, the degree of ethylation of Drosophila melanogaster sperm following treatment with (1-('3)H)-ethyl-methanesulfonate (EMS) or (2-('3)H)-diethylnitrosamine (DEN) was shown by different levels of silver grains on sperm. The degree of ethylation of sperm cells treated with the mutagen in different germ cell stages of development (sperm, spermatids, spermatocytes, or spermatogonia) was determined by varying the time of sampling. The average grains per sperm head from different samples were computed and analyzed with SAS program by the IBM 3033 computer at System Network Computer Center on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. The sperm which originated …

The Origins And Development Of The Gentlemanly Ideal In The South: 1607-1865., Robert Lynn Rainard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the origins and development of the gentleman in the South. It begins with an examination of Castiglione's The Courtier. Castiglione provided a discussion of the ideal man of Renaissance Italy. His ideal man, the courtier, possessed cultivation, character, and class. Together, these attributes made up the complete, or universal man. The Renaissance idea of the complete man profoundly influenced all later thought concerning the nature of the gentleman. The English embraced Castiglione's idea of a complete man, but they immediately adapted it to suit their own needs. The English placed much greater …

An experiment was conducted over a three-year period to determine the effect of three management systems on performance and degree of parasitism of spring born market lambs. One hundred fifty-six Suffolk and Suffolk sired crossbred lambs (60, 48 and 48 in 1977, 1978 and 1979, respectively) were randomly alloted so as to balance the effect of sex, weight and breeding to one of three treatments: (1) pasture plus creep, (2) drylot and (3) an expanded metal floored pen. All lambs were fed a pelleted ration consisting of approximately 50% forage. Lambs were weaned at an average age of 60 days, …
Techniques Of Atomic Absorption: Direct Determination Of Cadmium In Biological Materials And Metal Speciation By Differential Atomization., Susan Deborah Weiss
Techniques Of Atomic Absorption: Direct Determination Of Cadmium In Biological Materials And Metal Speciation By Differential Atomization., Susan Deborah Weiss
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A method was developed for the direct determination of cadmium in biological materials. Determination of metals in biological samples was made difficult by the low concentration, the complex matrix, and the small amount of sample generally available. Current methods for this type of analysis involve either a wet-ashing or a dry-ashing step to break down the organic matrix and concentrate the metals present. These procedures often cause positive and/or negative errors due to contamination of the sample or loss of the metal of interest. The described method avoided these sources of error by eliminating sample pretreatment steps. The method made …
