Toxicity Of Ambush Registered Trademark And Pydrin Registered Trademark To Red Crawfish, Procambarus Clarkii (Girard) And Channel Catfish, Ictaluras Punctatus Rafinesque In Laboratory And Field Studies And The Accumulation And Dissipation Of Associated Residues., Dwayne Paul Coulon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In laboratory studies, 24 hr LC(,50) values obtained for Ambush('(REGTM)) and Pydrin('(REGTM)) on 18-27 mm juvenile red swamp crawfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard), in clear water were 0.49 and 0.37 ppb, respectively. LC(,50) values derived for 10-20 mm channel catfish fry, Ictaluras punctatus Rafinesque, were 1.81 and 1.83 ppb, respectively for Ambush('(REGTM)) and Pydrin('(REGTM)). The addition of alluvial soils to test waters had no apparent effect on toxicity to crawfish but did reduce toxicity to channel catfish. This was attributed to a strong adsorption to clay and organic components of the soils. Applications of field rates of Ambush('(REGTM)) and Pydrin('(REGTM)) to …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of varying intensities of recovery exercise on the level of blood lactate after a short, supramaximal exercise bout. Seven males were advised of the testing protocol and consented to serve as subjects. All subjects performed an oxygen cost of cycling test and maximal oxygen uptake (VO(,2)(' )max) test prior to the commencement of the recovery tests. The subjects then performed one of four treatments on separate days with 1-4 days of rest between tests. Preceding each treatment the subjects cycled at a workload corresponding to 150% of VO(,2)(' )max for …
Characterization And Bioavailability Of Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate., Sirous Kashefi
Characterization And Bioavailability Of Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate., Sirous Kashefi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pressed alfalfa juice at pH 8.5 was heated (60(DEGREES)C) and centrifuged to produce a brown solution. This solution was further heated (80(DEGREES)C) at pH 4.0, centrifuged, and freeze-dried to produce a light tan powder. Tetrahymena pyriformis W. was used to test quality of cytoplasmic and chloroplastic fractions of alfalfa leaf protein concentrate (ALPC). Chloroplastic ALPC supported poor cell growth, probably because of high concentrations of chlorophyll, fat, and chlorogenic acid to which Tetrahymena is reported to be sensitive. Data indicated that isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine and sulfur-containing amino acids in cytoplasmic ALPC were higher than those in soybean. Data indicated cytoplasmic …
Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To Environmental Thallium Compounds., Linda Katherine Hoeflich
Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To Environmental Thallium Compounds., Linda Katherine Hoeflich
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Because of increasing concern over global pollution by the energy production industry, especially large, centralized utility complexes, the quantitation and speciation of heavy metals have taken on great importance. These metals are emitted with coal fly ash and may be subsequently deposited in natural waters. Complications arise when certain inorganic compounds undergo biomethylation by microbial action in these waters. Therefore, procedures must be developed to analyze and differentiate the mixture of inorganic and organometallic compounds present. This work is a study of the electrochemical properties of inorganic and organothallium compounds. The toxicological significance of thallium compounds is known, and their …

The Yongnam-Ro: An Historical Geography Of A Korean Royal Road. (Volumes I And Ii)., Young-Joon Choe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Yongnam-ro, the main communication artery between Seoul and Pusan, was the shortest and the most important route running through the central part of southern Korea. This road evolved as a military campaign route in ancient times and finally as an administrative communication artery in the Yi Dynasty. Although spanning some rugged areas in its course, the Yongnam-ro had some advantages: first, it avoided the troublesome communication system connected by river crossings because its path followed longitudinal valleys of the Han and Naktong rivers; second, it connected the waterways of the Han and Naktong; third, it formed the pivot belt …

Smoking In The Soviet Union, R. Cooper
Smoking In The Soviet Union, R. Cooper
Faculty Publications
Although it is the fourth largest producer of tobacco in the world, relatively little has been written about the problem in the USSR. Since the economy is centrally planned and marketing of tobacco products is under direct government control it might be expected that the Soviet Union would implement different, perhaps, more effective, antismoking campaigns. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

Recent Trends In Coronary Risk Factors In The Ussr, R. Cooper, A. Schatzkin
Faculty Publications
The Soviet Union has experienced an increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease over the last 15 years sufficient to result in an overall deterioration in the health of adults. The distribution of coronary risk factors, and the secular trends in diet and cigarette consumption provide a potential explanation for the upsurge in death rates. The animal fat content of the Soviet diet has been steadily enriched since the 1950s and cigarette production increased 72 per cent from 1959 to 1980. The post-Stalin orientation of the Soviet economy toward a policy of motivating the work force primarily through the …

Effects Of Insecticide-Herbicide Interactions On Soybean Plants Grown On Eight Louisiana Soils., Henry Clifford Hill Jr
Effects Of Insecticide-Herbicide Interactions On Soybean Plants Grown On Eight Louisiana Soils., Henry Clifford Hill Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In 1979, a study was initiated to determine if selected rates of aldicarb(2-methyl-2(methylthio)propionaldehyde O-(methylcarbamoyl oxime), trifluralin (a,a,a-Trifluoro-2, 6-dinitro-N, N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) and metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1, 2, 4-triazin-5(4H)-one), applied alone and in combination, resulted in phytotoxic reactions in soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merr. var. Davis. The three greenhouse studies and one field-greenhouse study were conducted on eight selected Louisiana soils to determine to what extent the soil characteristics affected the biological activity of these combinations. The trifluralin-containing treatments used in this study, generally, produced stunted, thick-stemmed plants with smaller and fewer nodules than the non-treated check plants. However, N(,2) C(,2) H(,2) activity was …

X-Ray Crystal Structures Of Some Inorganic, Organometallic, And Organic Natural Product Systems (Terpene, Monoterpene, Sesquiterpene, Irazunolide, Tetracyanonickelate)., Terry Joseph Delord
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The single crystal X-ray structures of eight compounds have been determined representing the Inorganic, Organometallic, and Organic Natural Product classes of molecules. Of the natural product compounds, two varieties of terpenes are represented; monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The monoterpene, 3-trans,6-trans-dihydroxymenthene (C(,10)H(,18)O(,2)), crystallizes in space group C2 with lattice constants a = 17.837(4), b = 7.113(7), c = 8.096(2) (ANGSTROM), (beta) = 102.17(6)(DEGREES). The structure is described by a disordered hydrogen bonding network extending in three dimensions throughout the crystal. Irazunolide (C(,17)H(,18)O(,5)), based on the eudesmane structure, is a sesquiterpene lactone crystallizing in space group P2(,1)2(,1)2(,1) with lattice constants a = 7.793(1), …
Ion-Ion And Ion-Solvent Interactions In The System Sodium-Aluminum Tetraethyl-Benzene-Hmpa., James Harold Medley
Ion-Ion And Ion-Solvent Interactions In The System Sodium-Aluminum Tetraethyl-Benzene-Hmpa., James Harold Medley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The behavior of the system NaAlEt(,4)-benzene-HMPA as a function of the mole ratio HMPA:NaAlEt(,4) has been studied via equivalent conductance measurements, viscosity measurements and ('23)Na, ('27)Al and ('1)H nmr spectroscopy. This system has the property of forming two immiscible liquid phases. Therefore a careful analysis of the dependence of the lower phase volume on the mole ratio was undertaken. Additionally the uptake of benzene in the lower phase can be followed via nmr integration. The volume studies indicate a similarity in behavior of the anionic organoaluminum "liquid clathrate" compounds. The formation of two liquid phases has been related to the …
The Southern Educational Oratory Of William Preston Johnston, 1880-1899., Dinah Daniel Richard
The Southern Educational Oratory Of William Preston Johnston, 1880-1899., Dinah Daniel Richard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation analyzes eight ceremonial speeches delivered between 1880 and 1899 by William Preston Johnston, Southern educational leader. Emphasis is placed on the contexts in which he spoke, the strategy he employed, the various forms of support he used to amplify his messages, and the degree of his effectiveness. Realizing that the South needed to implement universal education, Johnston helped to launch the early educational awakening in his region. Speaking on behalf of the movement, Johnston displayed certain features. First, he demonstrated a "rhetoric of optimism," stressing the New South creed. Second, he employed a strategy for prompting change, beginning …
The Vertebrate Paleontology Of Late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) Mammalian Sites Of Louisiana, Linda L. Rice
The Vertebrate Paleontology Of Late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) Mammalian Sites Of Louisiana, Linda L. Rice
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This thesis describes the late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) vertebrate paleontology of Louisiana through the use of vertebrates as paleoenvironmental indicators. This method of interpretation is established through morphological description and evaluation, taphonomy, systematic paleontology, and in some cases, the use of modern analogs.
This study compares and contrasts Louisiana with other southeastern states during the late Pleistocene. This comparison shows that Louisiana did not vary significantly from the rest of the southeastern United States during the late Rancholabrean. This work also shows that the most common habitats of Louisiana at this time were open temperate woods, grasslands, and marshes. Geographically, most …

Genetic And Molecular Genetic Studies In The Cytoplasmic Incompatibility System In The Mosquito Culex Pipiens., David Ray Mcgee
Genetic And Molecular Genetic Studies In The Cytoplasmic Incompatibility System In The Mosquito Culex Pipiens., David Ray Mcgee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An analysis of the cytoplasmic incompatibility system in Culex pipiens has been made. Both normal and antibiotic-resistant strains have been established using erythromycin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline. A complete genetic analysis has been made using all possible reciprocal crosses. Crosses between the normal strains show unidirectional compatibility. The genetic crosses involving the tetracycline-resistant strain show a reversal of the direction of compatibility when compared with those involving the untreated parental strain. Erythromycin and chloramphenicol-resistant strains exhibited no such change in direction of compatibility when compared with their respective untreated parental strains. Exceptional crossing relationships between chloramphenicol and tetracycline-resistant strains were found. …
Detection Of Free Radicals From The Reactions Of Ozone With Olefins And From Cigarette Smoke By Electron Spin Resonance Techniques., Donald Gregory Prier
Detection Of Free Radicals From The Reactions Of Ozone With Olefins And From Cigarette Smoke By Electron Spin Resonance Techniques., Donald Gregory Prier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A novel technique is presented that allows detection of free radicals from ozone-olefin reactions for the first time. Olefins are ozonated at -78(DEGREES)C, the unreacted ozone removed, the spin trap added, and the solution warmed. The radicals spin trapped indicate that trioxygenated intermediates are produced that decompose to radicals on warming. Ozonation of cyclic acetals by this procedure yields acyl hydrotrioxides that decompose on warming to produce hydroperoxyl radicals, HOO(.). Alkoxyl radicals are spin trapped when mainstream cigarette smoke is bubbled through PBN solutions while acyloxyl radicals are spin trapped friom sidestream smoke. Stable radicals detected in cigarette tar are …
Thermal And Spatial Ecology Of Three Species Of Water Snakes (Nerodia) In A Louisiana Swamp., Thomas Claud Michot
Thermal And Spatial Ecology Of Three Species Of Water Snakes (Nerodia) In A Louisiana Swamp., Thomas Claud Michot
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Biotelemetry was used to study thermal and spatial relationships in Nerodia fasciata confluens, N. c. cyclopion, and N. r. rhombifera. Twenty snakes were monitored between April 1978 and September 1979 in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Laboratory-determined preferred temperature ranges were compared to environmental temperatures from air, soil, and water to predict thermally optimum microhabitats. Comparison of observed and predicted microhabitats for each observation showed that N. fasciata was found more frequently in the thermally optimum microhabitat than were N. cyclopion and N. rhombifera. Nerodia cyclopion consistently showed thermal nonconformity by altering the relationship between body (BT) and ambient (AT) temperatures so …
