Jack London's South Sea Narratives., David Allison Moreland Jan 1980

Jack London's South Sea Narratives., David Allison Moreland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although Jack London is recognized as one of the most popular American fiction writers in the world, critics of American literary naturalism have tended to rank him considerably below the other well-known naturalists: Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, and Theodore Dreiser. The consensus has been that London wrote too much, too hastily, and weakened his art by imposing "ideas" (Darwinian, Spencerian, Nietzschean, Marxian) upon his narratives. However, in recent years a serious reevaluation of "the boy wonder of the naturalist carnival" has begun. As a master of the action narrative, Jack London, who both mirrored his age and anticipated later twentieth-century …

The Occurrence Of Alliinase In Selected Bacterial Strains., Lawrence A. Reily Jan 1980

The Occurrence Of Alliinase In Selected Bacterial Strains., Lawrence A. Reily

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Alliinases have been studied in animals and plants, but relatively little attention has been given to bacterial alliinases. Therefore, an investigation was initiated to determine the prevalence and nature of alliinase systems in bacteria. A method of determining alliinase activity in bacteria was developed. The procedure was based on qualitative or quantitative detection of allicin, by a color reaction with N-ethylmaleimide. Alliinase was found to be present in some strains and absent in others. In still other strains, alliinase seemed to be a variable characteristic. It was speculated that alliin cleavage in bacteria might be accomplished via an inducible cystathionase. …

Development And Evaluation Of Corn-Cowpea Mixtures As Protein Sources For Nigerian Infants., Enoch Nwankwo T Akobundu Jan 1980

Development And Evaluation Of Corn-Cowpea Mixtures As Protein Sources For Nigerian Infants., Enoch Nwankwo T Akobundu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The feasibility of producing a low cost, easy to use, and flatulence-free product from corn and cowpeas for Nigerian children was investigated. Cowpea slurry was naturally fermented for 48 hours at room temperature. The pH dropped from 6.38 to 4.20. In fermentation with the yeast, pichia guilliermondii Y-2075, for 72 hours at room temperature, the pH dropped to only 5.60. Soaking and wet milling resulted in nutrient losses. Drum drying of the product did not significantly reduce lysine levels, 90% being biologically available in most samples. Products with good biological value as measured by PER in excess of 2.0 were …

The Dimensions Of Social Behavior Of Monkey Infants., Steven Mark Buco Jan 1980

The Dimensions Of Social Behavior Of Monkey Infants., Steven Mark Buco

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the underlying dimensions of social behavior of infant monkeys. Three species of mother-infant dyad-reared monkeys were studied: crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis), rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), and patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). In addition, the behavior of crab-eating macaques reared in mother-sibling-infant triads and in nuclear family triads was investigated. Independent maximum likelihood factor analyses of the mother-oriented and peer-oriented behavior of each of the five groups yielded seven factors, five of which were grossly similar across groups: social play, maternal comfort and care, affiliation, mother-oriented social play, and social exploration. The remaining two factors were not consistent …

Studies On The Physiology Of A Cellulolytic Strain Of Aspergillus Terreus Under Conditions Of Batch And Continuous Cultivation., Thomas Ferrell Miller Jan 1980

Studies On The Physiology Of A Cellulolytic Strain Of Aspergillus Terreus Under Conditions Of Batch And Continuous Cultivation., Thomas Ferrell Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Experiments have been conducted to determine the feasibility of the bioconversion of cellulose into Single Cell Protein (SCP) using a thermotolerant, cellulolytic strain of Aspergillus terreus. Crude cellulases produced during the growth of fungal biomass were tested for their ability to generate glucose syrups by enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. Studies on continuous cultivation of glucose-limited A. terreus resulted in the development of a highly optimized medium which allowed the organism to achieve similar maximum specific growth rates (umax) measured in batch culture. Upon proportionate increase of the medium composition, there was no decrease in growth rates or in biomass yields …

Cognitive Processes In Depression., Sally Ann Davis Jan 1980

Cognitive Processes In Depression., Sally Ann Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hypotheses derived from Beck's cognitive theory of depression were tested using 60 depressed and non-depressed males and females as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory. Subjects rated their performance before and after they received "positive," "negative," and "neutral" feedback regarding their performance on a social interaction task. They were also asked to recall feedback they received and explain reasons for their post-feedback self-rating. Results showed depressed males and females had a more negative evaluation of present circumstances and poorer memory for feedback. Further, depressed males lowered their self-evaluation upon feedback significantly more than did non-depressed males. In addition, depressed males …

In addition, a canonical correlation between early life-history …

Development And Applications Of Gas Chromatography - Atomic Absorption Interface Instrumentation., Eric Leon Kiesel Jan 1980

Development And Applications Of Gas Chromatography - Atomic Absorption Interface Instrumentation., Eric Leon Kiesel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is being recognized that we are exposed to increasing numbers of poorly understood and potentially toxic substances within our environment. To understand fully the human health effects and environmental impact of these hazards, complete chemical characterization or "speciation" studies of these hazards is necessary. Once exposure to a toxic substance has occurred, the physical and chemical form will determine the length of time a compound will remain in the environment and the types of chemical reactions that will occur in atmospheric, aquatic, and soil environments. Physiological and toxicological effects are also dependent upon the chemical form and physical form. …

The Association Between Urinary Sodium Excretion And Blood Pressure In Children, R. Cooper, I. Soltero, K. Liu, D. Berkson, S. Levinson, J. Stamler

Faculty Publications

This study explored the association between sodium excretion and blood pressure (BP). A new method was used to minimize the measurement error introduced by the large intrinsic variability of 24-hour sodium excretion. The ratio of intra- to interindividual variation was used to estimate the number of measurements needed to characterize the individual. When seven consecutive 24-hour samples were collected from 73 children, ages 11-14 years, a significant correlation between mean individual sodium excretion and BP was demonstrated. The independent relationship persisted when controlling for height, weight, pulse, age, sex and race (p = 0.045), but was eliminated by simultaneously considering …

With Ground Teeth: A Study Of Flannery O'Connor's Women., Mary Lambert Morton Jan 1980

With Ground Teeth: A Study Of Flannery O'Connor's Women., Mary Lambert Morton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eighteen of Flannery O'Connor's short stories feature women as protagonists or antagonists. Of the remaining thirteen stories in the canon, four are assimilated into her novel Wise Blood. This study, then, encompasses the entire O'Connor canon with the exceptions of the novel The Violent Bear It Away and eight short stories, since one of the remaining nine stories is a part of The Violent Bear It Away. The majority, then, of O'Connor's short stories feature women in leading roles. Even those in supporting roles seem prominent. With the women in Wise Blood, they dramatize O'Connor's special vision of comedy and …

From Disgrace To Dignity - The Louisiana Leper Home, 1894-1921, Charles Hilary Calandro Jan 1980

From Disgrace To Dignity - The Louisiana Leper Home, 1894-1921, Charles Hilary Calandro

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The care and treatment of lepers at the Louisiana Leper Home from 1894 to 1921 was based essentially upon both Biblical and medieval precedents, the chief of which was the belief that leprosy was incurable and its victims should be isolated. Accordingly, the state medical profession believed that leprous cases should be isolated and treated to prevent further spread of the disease, while the lay community favored their isolation to remove the public's economic and social fears. The creation of an asylum at a rundown plantation in Iberville Parish represented the practical application of this belief. On the one hand, …

Endosymbiosis In The Caecum Of The Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.)., Robert Paul West

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies to investigate possible endosymbiotic relationships within the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), a major pest of soybeans in Louisiana, were conducted. Primary emphasis was placed on the caecum, a region of the digestive tract previously associated with microbial endosymbiosis in insects. By SEM, a monoculture of rod-shaped bacteria measuring 2.5 by 0.5 (mu)m was observed adhering to the caecal crypt walls. Examination of additional specimens revealed various morphological variations including cocci, elongated rods, and rods which were apparently budding, often found within the same specimen. Diapausing specimens appeared to be no different from reproducing individuals. TEM of …
