A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii Jan 1983

A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A taxonomy developed of specific selling activities of industrial salespeople was developed to differentiate "types" of salespeople. The taxonomy was developed based on the responses of 1393 salespeople from 51 companies to a survey of the frequency with which they performed activities, and the time spent to perform each activity. The first stage of the research was the compilation of an exhaustive list of sales activities. These activities were collected from a series of focus groups and personal interviews. The questionnaire was formulated based on the 121 sales activities collected from the focus groups. Two scales were designed and implemented …

Animals were fitted with indwelling jugular catheters and estrous cycle was synchronized with PGF(,2(alpha)). Effects of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and angiotensin II (AII) on the secretion of aldosterone, cortisol, progesterone and other parameters such as sodium and potassium that influenced aldosterone secretion were analyzed by Latin Square design, replicated twice. Treatments consisted of intravenous injections of 200 I.U. ACTH/animal, 18 mg AII/animal, or physiological saline. Blood samples were collected before treatment (0 min), at fifteen and thirty minutes after treatment, and at hourly …

Bioavailability Of Iron In Beef And Beef-Soybean Mixtures., Felipe Diez Jan 1983

Bioavailability Of Iron In Beef And Beef-Soybean Mixtures., Felipe Diez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In-vivo and in-vitro studies were conducted to measure bioavailability of iron from beef and beef-soy mixtures. The effects of cooking temperature and method of cooking were investigated. Animals absorbed non-heme iron better than heme forms and utilized iron contained in beef-soy diets as efficiently as that contained in beef diets. Colorimetric iron values of 17.18, 6.0, and 9.02% were obtained in raw, broiled and microwaved beef samples, respectively. A similar trend was observed in beef-soy mixtures when analyzed raw (11.03), broiled (6.32) or microwaved (2.21). Iron contained in beef-soy flour mixtures was dialyzed in a larger proportion (16.60%) as compared …

Statistical Mechanics Of Conformational Transitions In Biopolymers., Rachid Charbel Maroun Jan 1983

Statistical Mechanics Of Conformational Transitions In Biopolymers., Rachid Charbel Maroun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recently extended theoretical methods and existent experimental methods have been employed for the determination of conformational-dependent properties of polymers of biological interest like synthetic polyamino acids, natural polypeptides and proteins. Calculation of theoretical properties, like for example average helical content and average helical length, as derived from the configuration partition function has been achieved by making use of the Rotational Isomeric State approximation through modifications and innovations of a nearest-neighbor interaction version of the Zimm-Bragg model of helix-coil transitions as presented in a matrix format suitable for use in an electronic computer. The scope of the theory allows for the …

Biological, Ecological, And Morphological Investigations Of The Rice Water Weevil, Lissorhoptrus Oryzophilus Kuschel, On Two Rice Genotypes., Gary Leonard Cave

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most important insect pest of rice, Oryza sativa (L.), in the United States. Although this insect has been associated with O. sativa since the introduction of this plant species into the United States in 1685, some aspects of its biology remain obscure. Larvae of L. oryzophilus have four instars, based on measurements of head-capsule widths of field-collected larvae in 1981 and 1982. The head-capsule widths of each instar were: I, 0.14 to 0.18 mm; II, 0.20 to 0.26 mm; III, 0.28 to 0.38 mm; IV, 0.40 to 0.60 mm. Further studies …

River Otter Abundance, Distribution, And Habitat Use In Louisiana, Thomas Lee Edwards Sep 1982

River Otter Abundance, Distribution, And Habitat Use In Louisiana, Thomas Lee Edwards

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

River otter abundance, distribution and habitat use were determined in Louisiana, with emphasis placed on the parishes north of the coastal marshes. Records from 1913 to 1980 indicated that otter harvest and pelt price increased over the years. Data from a trapper survey for the 1980-81 season were used to estimate otter harvest for each parish, and the data were compared in a step-wise regression procedure with independent variables thought to affect otter abundance. Of the factors I considered, those most responsible for variation in trapper harvest among parishes were the area composed of non-forested wetlands, area composed of forested …

The Influence Of Processing On The Chemical And Electrophoretic Patterns Of Water-Soluble And Salt-Soluble Proteins In Blue Crabs., Orthnell George Dowdie Jan 1982

The Influence Of Processing On The Chemical And Electrophoretic Patterns Of Water-Soluble And Salt-Soluble Proteins In Blue Crabs., Orthnell George Dowdie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Raw and processed Blue crab meat were investigated to determine the influence of processing temperature on the distribution of water soluble and salt soluble proteins, using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in conjunction with photodensitometry. Analysis of the raw crabmeat protein showed 30 water soluble and 45 salt soluble protein subunits. Salt soluble proteins were composed of subunits whose molecular weights were much more variable than the water soluble protein subunits. Salt soluble proteins were found to have molecular weights of 12,000-160,000 daltons, whereas the water soluble subunits were of molecular weights 12,000-130,000 daltons. There were significant differences (P < 0.001) in the changes between the number of bands present in the raw crabmeat and the number retained after processing at 100(DEGREES)C; however, the level of significance was only changed to (P < 0.05) when raw crabmeat was compared to crabmeat processed at 121(DEGREES)C in steam. Salt soluble proteins were more heat labile than the water soluble proteins. At 70(DEGREES)C, the total level of salt soluble protein was reduced 57% compared to the levels in raw meat, whereas, the water soluble proteins were reduced only 13%. Processing temperatures were found to significantly influence (P < 0.05) the pH of the processed meat as well as the water in which the crabs were processed. Correlation coefficients of r = 0.7604 and r = -0.6401 were found between changes in pH and basic and acidic groups. These coefficients were significant at (P < 0.05). Analysis of Blue crab hemolymph for copper revealed the copper content to be approximately eight times greater than quantities found in the meat. Nine proteins were found in the hemolymph with 3 of the proteins being complexed with copper (hemocyanins). The hemocyanins had molecular weights of 58,000, 71,000 and 95,000 daltons. The subunit with a molecular weight of 58,000 daltons contained approximately 65% of the total copper in the hemolymph.

The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans Jan 1982

The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Above all deafness constitutes a language and communication problem. A child born deaf experiences a form of double deprivation: symbolic deprivation and social interactional deprivation. Both the development of self and the construction of a world (human culture) are impeded by the lack of language. This first ethnography of a state residential school for the deaf (SSD) follows Glaser and Strauss (1967) by developing a theory from "data" systematically obtained on the field. The formulations of Goffman, Berger and Luckmann, Mead and Bernstein guided this inquiry and provided it a sense of reference. The central problem investigated in question form …

Selected Factors Contributing To Depression Among Women., Barbara Marie Hardin Jan 1982

Selected Factors Contributing To Depression Among Women., Barbara Marie Hardin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It has been a consistent epidemiological finding that women are more prone to develop symptoms of depression than men. The present investigation examines women's greater vulnerability to depression in terms of Beck's cognitive theory of depression. Sixty women were divided into a depressed group and a non-depressed group on the basis of criteria scores on Scale 2 of the MMPI and on the Beck Depression Inventory. The groups did not differ significantly in age, education or employment status. Each subject was administered the MMPI, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Hopelessness Scale, the Personal Attributes Questionaire (PAQ), and Levenson's Internal, …

Correlative Field And Laboratory Microcosm Approaches In Ascertaining Xenobiotic Effect And Fate In Diverse Aquatic Microenvironments., Ralph Joseph Portier Jan 1982

Correlative Field And Laboratory Microcosm Approaches In Ascertaining Xenobiotic Effect And Fate In Diverse Aquatic Microenvironments., Ralph Joseph Portier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The impact of a multitude of toxic chemicals, or xenobiotics, on diverse aquatic environments and the need to consider such factors in adjacent land use and disposal situations has necessitated the development of usable analytical predictive approaches. A microbial and enzymatic assessment protocol for determining the environmental effect and fate of these manufactured chemicals in coastal wetlands was devised. The protocol combined in situ analyses of interrelated soil/sediment microenvironments with statistical and analytical laboratory microcosm approaches in presenting valid predictive models of xenobiotic fate and effect. The general objective of this combined field/laboratory analysis was to provide a better understanding …

An Experimental Rotavirus Infection In Neonatal Gnotobiotic Dogs., Charles Audrey Johnson Jan 1982

An Experimental Rotavirus Infection In Neonatal Gnotobiotic Dogs., Charles Audrey Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A canine rotavirus isolate caused clinical disease, small intestinal lesions, serum antibody response, and shedding of rotavirus in the feces in newborn gnotobiotic dogs. The results of this study demonstrated this rotavirus was a pathogen in neonatal gnotobiotic dogs. The pathogenesis of the intestinal lesions was similar to the pathogenesis of rotaviral enteritis in other species. In three consecutive experiments, twenty puppies were derived by caesarean section and transferred to sterile isolators. Gnotobiotic puppies were inoculated orally with a rotavirus isolated from a neonatal puppy with fatal diarrhea. Fecal samples from the puppies were examined for virus particles by negative …

This study focuses on the large Works Progress Administration (WPA) archaeological programs in Louisiana and Kentucky, the combined WPA and TVA programs in Alabama and Tennessee, and the WPA and National …

Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley Jan 1982

Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas Bernhard's work remains controversial after more than twenty years of critical acclaim. Attempts to interpret his work according to traditional literary standards have generated as many questions as answers. Anneliese Botond believes Bernhard's work cannot be understood only through literary analysis, and Gudrun Mauch proposes that Jungian archetypes are present in his autobiographical novels. Critics agree, however, that Bernhard portrays mad protagonists in a seemingly insane world. The present study analyzes schizophrenia, myth, and the creative process in Bernhard's work to propose purpose for his descriptions of madness. This study also addresses questions posed by J. de Cort, who …

Microbial Products From Sweet Potato Wastes., Nhuan Phu Nghiem Jan 1982

Microbial Products From Sweet Potato Wastes., Nhuan Phu Nghiem

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Microbial production of methane from alkaline sweet potato wastes was studied. Assessment of methane production potential was based on total COD of the wastes. A single-stage and a two-stage system were studied. In both systems, to ensure stable operation and high performance, methane fermenters had to be initially seeded with large quantities of methane formers. A 50% inoculum (based on total fermenter volume) was found to be most effective. Methane formers tended to aggregate to form spherical particles which had extremely high settling rates, this eliminated the requirement of cell recycle. They obtained the nutrients required for their growth through …

Socio-Cultural And Attitudinal Change In The Modernization Process: A Study Of Acehnese Society In Transition (Sumatra)., Bahrein Tuhumalem Sugihen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was assumed that the introduction of large scale industry into a traditional agrarian society would bring about some changes in the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior of individual members of the social system. Such changes are related to one's place of residence as well as personal characteristics. It was hypothesized that (1) one's religious-behavior and one's attitudes toward some consequences of industrialization (modernism) are related to one's place of residence, age, educational attainment, and one's degree of contact with industry; (2) one's degree of contact with the industry is related to or effected by one's place of residence, age, …

Ultrastructural - Biochemical Changes And Sensory Correlations In Shrimp During Cold Storage., Teck Muk Wong Jan 1982

Ultrastructural - Biochemical Changes And Sensory Correlations In Shrimp During Cold Storage., Teck Muk Wong

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ultrastructural-biochemical changes and sensory correlations of penaeid shrimp during iced and frozen storage were analyzed. The aroma, color and acceptability of "wild" shrimp, P. setiferus from the Gulf of Mexico, were judged by six trained panelist to be superior to that of the pond-raised shrimp, P. stylirostris. However, P. stylirostris on the Master Mix Shrimp Diet has a slightly superior flavor than those fed with the Marine Ration 20 diet. Free amino acids, proline, glycine, taurine, and glutamic acid declined during the first 10 days of ice storage, and increased after 20 days. Leucine, and lysine increased linearly during ice …

Evaluation Of A Polymer Film Impregnated With Reagent For The Detection And Determination Of Chlorine In Air., Khudre Muhammad Attar Jan 1982

Evaluation Of A Polymer Film Impregnated With Reagent For The Detection And Determination Of Chlorine In Air., Khudre Muhammad Attar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new method for the direct detection and determination of chlorine in air has been devised. The method is based on the permeation of the gas through a silicone-polycarbonate copolymer film impregnated with a colorimetric reagent. The impregnation of the film with reagent was achieved by dissolving both a polymer film and a reagent in a common volatile solvent (CHCl(,3)), followed by casting on a leveled surface to allow the solvent to evaporate, thus forming a polymer film containing suspended reagent. The polymer films impregnated in such manner, were uniform and transparent. A spectrophotometer was used for monitoring the change …

Psychophysiological Concomitants Of Levels Of Cognitive Processing., Ronald Alan Cohen Jan 1982

Psychophysiological Concomitants Of Levels Of Cognitive Processing., Ronald Alan Cohen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The peripheral electrophysiological manifestations of levels of cognitive processing and memory performance were investigated by recording heart rate, skin conductance, skin temperature and electromyogram measures during a three phase verbal task. Subjects processed words at three cognitive levels (phonetic, low semantic, high semantic), and physiological recordings were made during cue covert processing and verbalization phases. Three colored lights were used to cue subjects to the appropriate processing level for each word. An incidental memory task was given following the processing tasks. As expected, words processed at the higher cognitive levels were recalled better. There was greater physiological reactivity associated with …
