The Judische Winterhilfe was established in 1935 by the Reichsvertretung to aid unemployed and needy Jews. Jews were excluded from receiving general assistance during winter months by the Nuremberg Laws, and thus set up their own organization to help with food, medicine and shelter even as they were pressured to leave Germany. For as long as the organization survived, it proved a model charity, opening soup kitchens, orphanages, etc. …

Information Provided by Michael D. Bulmash: Frauen Konzentrationslager (FKL) Auschwitz/ Women’s Concentration Camp Auschwitz prisoner mail on camp stationery card. FKL Auschwitz was established as a subcamp of Frauen-Konzentrationslager Ravensbrueck housed at Auschwitz before becoming integrated with the Auschwitz camp proper at Birkenau (Auschwitz II). Stamp has been removed (censors did this to check for hidden messages) and another, uncanceled Mohemia Moravia applied. FKL imprinted covers are extremely scarce.

Ms. Kopala's HASAG pin. Her ID (see 2016.1.05) is stamped with 'P' for Pole, and she is shown in the picture with a prominent 'P' on her uniform. HASAG, or Hugo Schneider AG, was an established metal goods manufacturer headquartered in Leipzig, Germany. From its beginnings as a manufacturer of lamps, it evolved into an infamous Nazi arms manufacturer with many factories across Europe using slave labor from concentration camps such as Auschwitz and Buchenwald, as well as numerous ghettos in …

Information Provided by Michael D. Bulmash: A fifty pfennig banknote issued by and used at the German concentration camp, Oranienburg, later commonly called Sachsenhausen. The note measures 5'' x 3 1/2'' and on both sides pictures the German eagle and Swastika device, two armed German soldiers facing center, and a strand of barbed wire. Sachsenhausen was used primarily for political prisoners and was the scene of a huge counterfeiting effort to undermine the British Pound …

Information Provided by Michael D. Bulmash: Buchenwald was a Nazi concentration camp established on the Ettersberg near Weimar, Thuringia, Germany. Camp prisoners worked primarily as slave labor in local armament factories. Inmates were Jews, political prisoners, religious prisoners, and prisoners of war.

An antisemitic German Notgeld issued by the city of Tostedt in the early 1920s. It shows two Jews hanging on a tree surrounded by ravens. The inscription says: "This should happen to all those profiteers and Germany would be better off." Notgeld is "emergency money" issued to deal with hyperinflation and currency collapse.
