Translating The Libraries: A Multilingual Information Page For International Students, Jennifer Mcclure, Mangala Krishnamurthy Apr 2007

Translating The Libraries: A Multilingual Information Page For International Students, Jennifer Mcclure, Mangala Krishnamurthy

The Southeastern Librarian

University libraries have long recognized the special needs of international students on campus, but have struggled to find the best ways to bridge the cultural and linguistic barriers and thereby demystify the library experience. The University of Alabama’s online Information Page for International Students (http://www.lib.ua.edu/international/), which was first mounted on the Libraries’ website in 2004, was an attempt to meet this need; however, only when the page was translated into Spanish and Chinese, two of the campus’s most prominent languages, did the advantages of library information in students’ native languages become fully apparent.

Representation Of Latino Culture In Introductory High School Textbooks, Patricia Thomas Mar 2007

Representation Of Latino Culture In Introductory High School Textbooks, Patricia Thomas

Dimensions

As Latinos continue to be the fastest growing racial minority group in the U.S., the many dimensions of Latino culture have become increasingly important as elements of the Spanish language curriculum. This study focuses on textbooks as a major resource in cultural instruction, examining how Latinos and Latino culture are represented in Spanish textbooks at the introductory level. In general, the Latino presence in the U.S. is presented as an important part of the Spanishspeaking world. Historical context regarding how specific Latino communities were established is sometimes limited, as is discussion of certain current economic, political, and identity issues. A …

Integrating Stories With Multimedia Into The French Language Classroom, Marat Sanatullov, Elvira Sanatullova-Allison

Dimensions

Standards, proficiency, theory and research, and instructional approaches can guide teachers in integrating stories with multimedia in a foreign language classroom, as the authors demonstrate through the adaptation of a Haitian folk story for novice and intermediate learners of French. The article also gives practical recommendations for foreign language teachers to help them effectively integrate stories with multimedia in their classrooms and introduces the PEPPrepare, Explore, and Practice–model, which defines the essential steps of the use of stories with multimedia.

A 21st Century Approach To Integrating Culture And Communication, Rosalie M. Cheatham Mar 2007

A 21st Century Approach To Integrating Culture And Communication, Rosalie M. Cheatham

Dimensions

This article presents an approach to revising classroom instruction in order to integrate the second language standards of culture and communication throughout the second language program. It is designed to assure that today’s students are able not only to survive linguistically in the target culture but also to develop cultural awareness and to appreciate its importance for them as world citizens. Guided by some of the principles of the theoretical framework of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Integrated Performance Assessment (Glisan, Adair-Hauck, Koda, Sandrock, &Swender, 2003), this approach enables students to acquire culturally relevant knowledge …

Defining A Civil War Battlefield: Recent Archaeological Investigations At The Pickett's Mill State Historic Site, Paulding County, Georgia., Terry G. Powis, Jason Whatley, Mary T. Lumsden, Joseph Powell, Patrick Severts, Ron Hobgood, James Page

Faculty Articles

Recent investigations at the Pickett's Mill State Historic Site have yielded new insights into the Civil War battle that occurred in May 1864. Military and historical sources have documented that the major battle took place in a ravine, but that skirmishes also occurred in adjacent areas, including a large, open wheat field. Some reports have suggested that Confederate soldiers had forced Union troops out of the ravine into this field where they became exposed. In the summer of 2006 a variety of different archaeological techniques were employed to determine what role the wheat field played in the battle. This paper …

Solid Waste Management And Environmental Quality Provision In Unplanned Settlements Of Kampala, Uganda, Lwasa Shuaib Oct 2006

Solid Waste Management And Environmental Quality Provision In Unplanned Settlements Of Kampala, Uganda, Lwasa Shuaib

African Social Science Review

Popular modes of provisioning for solid waste management in urban areas are increasingly becoming a common feature in urban management as it replaces the formal modes of utility provision. This is in response to the inadequate provision of the basic utilities including waste collection and disposal. The poor environment created has compelled popular masses to cooperate with the intention of reducing the problems of poor environmental sanitation. The quality of the environment in a given place will influence the quality of life and reproduction processes for its residents, and in this respect, the built environment is important in ensuring a …

Road Traffic Accidents In Uganda: Epidemiological And Transport Policy Implications, Bakama B. Bakamanume

African Social Science Review

A recent accident in June 2004, claimed the life of the attorney general of Uganda. There is a growing concern about the rising trend in mortality and morbidity from road traffic accidents in developing countries due to their effect on health care resources and budgets. Traffic accident injuries account for high medical care costs and loss of productivity (Murray, et al., 1996). This paper first, examines traffic accident mortality and trends in injuries in Uganda. Second, it seeks to understand the spatial variations in traffic accidents from 1997 to 2002. The role of urbanization and transport changes in causing a …

U. S. Foreign Policy Agenda 2005-2009: Why West Africa Barely Features, Christopher Ruane Oct 2006

U. S. Foreign Policy Agenda 2005-2009: Why West Africa Barely Features, Christopher Ruane

African Social Science Review

This paper examines how West Africa is positioned within the contemporary discourse of U.S. foreign policy. It is suggested that as a locus of U.S. foreign policy concern, West Africa is primarily conceptualized as: a resource supplier, a potential terrorist base, and an area in which grave abuses of basic rights are widespread. However, the writer argues that these areas do not independently merit significant normative importance in U.S. foreign policy terms. It is suggested that the U.S. approach accurately reflects its foreign policy agenda which is primarily geared towards protecting Middle Eastern oil supplies, combating anti-American aggressive failed states …

Taiwan's Participation In Inter-Governmental Organizations: An Overview Of Its Initiatives, Chien-Pin Li

Faculty Articles

Emboldened by the ascendance of economic issues on the global agenda and the erosion of security-driven bipolar structures, Taiwan in the late 1980s decided to use its economic advantages for diplomatic gain. Examination of changes in three phases of Taiwan's initiatives indicates that its inter-governmental organization strategies and targets correlate well with domestic politics and external factors.

Talking About Music:Ethnographic Interviews On Traditional Hispanic Songs, Paula Heusinkveld Mar 2006

Talking About Music:Ethnographic Interviews On Traditional Hispanic Songs, Paula Heusinkveld

Dimensions

This article proposes a variety of activities designed to enrich the study of authentic Hispanic music in the foreign language class. As an integral part of any lesson on a culturally authentic song, students interview native speakers, both in and out of class, to learn about the cultural context of various songs. Of special interest are songs that have strong associations with specific cultural practices, such as “Las mañanitas.” In other assignments, students interview native speakers about their musical tastes, seek out songs from native informants, and then share these songs with the class. The cultural information obtained from the …

Footprints Across The South: Bartram's Trail Revisited, James Kautz Jan 2006

Footprints Across The South: Bartram's Trail Revisited, James Kautz

KSU Press Legacy Project

Over the past three decades, a tireless group of volunteers, funded by donations and small grants, has laid out the “Bartram Trail.” Drawn on maps, marked by metal signs beside highways and city streets and by blazes on trees, the trail follows the overall pathway of the eighteenth-century naturalist. Francis Harper’s edition of Bartram’s Travels led the way, identifying most of Bartram’s sites and species. More recently, Brad Sanders has given detailed directions to Bartram’s locations and present-day sites along the trail. Charles D. Spornick, Alan R. Cattier, and Robert J. Greene have published a guide for outdoor enthusiasts and …

The Great Middle Class Revolution: Our Long March Toward A Professionalized Society, Melvyn L. Fein Jan 2006

The Great Middle Class Revolution: Our Long March Toward A Professionalized Society, Melvyn L. Fein

KSU Press Legacy Project

Nowadays, liberalism is in crisis. Whereas conservatism suffered a profound meltdown during the Great Depression, today it is liberals who must confront the disconfirmation of many of their cherished beliefs. Sometimes, it seems as if a few are behaving like teenaged rebels, trying to prove that they will not buckle under adult hypocrisies. Yet, despite refusing to conform, they reflexively align themselves with the symbols of their sedition. Festooned with tattoos, body piercings, and spiky green hairdos, they insist they have arrived at these fashions independently. Liberals similarly take positions without acknowledging that these derive from groupthink. Like the journalists …

Professional Development Of Efl Teachers In Mexico: Examining Cross-Cultural And Global Linkages, Influences, And Outcomes, Robert A. Devillar, Binbin Jiang Jan 2006

Professional Development Of Efl Teachers In Mexico: Examining Cross-Cultural And Global Linkages, Influences, And Outcomes, Robert A. Devillar, Binbin Jiang

Faculty Articles

During the past twenty years, the paradigm of professional development in U.S. education has shifted from an analyitco-incremental model to an integrative-systematic model. The integrative-systematic model focuses on the whole-scale improvement of general student performance through the articulation, implementation, and assessment of standards that apply to teachers and teacher preparation institutions as well as to students. This article addresses the basis for this paradigm shift in the U.S. and the global expansion of the professional development mandate. The authors describe the first phase of a three-year, cross-cultural professional development program involving English-as-a-Foreign Language (EFL) teachers at a private school in …

Striving For Success: Practical Advice For Reference Graduate Assistants (And Other New Reference Providers), D. Brett Spencer, Amia Baker, Richard A. Stoddart, Sheri Helt, Adrienne R. Lee, Bryan Paul Tronstad

The Southeastern Librarian

With a little reflection, most librarians can recall the excitement, anticipation, and fear that filled their early days at the reference desk:

“What will people ask me?”

“What if I don’t know how to help someone?”

“What do I need to do to be successful?”

Many librarians first experienced this emotional turbulence while working as graduate assistants (GAs) in academic library reference departments. Although demanding, working as a reference graduate assistant yields many benefits. An assistantship introduces participants to basics of reference librarianship like customer service, search techniques, and teamwork. Assistantships also help students get their foot in the door …
