Regional Archives In France And Challenges For The American Researcher, Kristine M. Wirts
Regional Archives In France And Challenges For The American Researcher, Kristine M. Wirts
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Before the fifties Americans working on French history generally preferred to conduct research at the national level. Their research underscored intellectual trends of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in that a great number of their monographs centered on national politics, intellectual developments, institutional history, and military and political profiles. Their research interests also reflected their social origins. Many were from prosperous families, perhaps, not far removed from the most influential centers of American political and educational life. Undoubtedly, they interpreted historical events, the making of history, as the business of powerful white men-which was, in the United States, …

Preserving The History Of Boston's Diversity, Nancy Richard, Joan D. Krizack
Preserving The History Of Boston's Diversity, Nancy Richard, Joan D. Krizack
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
These headlines appeared in Boston newspapers. The articles they introduce tell each story from the journalist's point of view. Mainstream institutions involved in the events-the courts, law enforcement, schools, and businesses--created records that provide additional information from a mainstream point of view. Often these sources are the only documentation preserved in archives and libraries that are available to researchers. Individuals from the communities involved generally pass on their perspectives on the events by word of mouth. Occasionally, members of the community or the individuals who were present create oral or written sources in which to preserve their story. Unless mainstream …

The Effect Of Estate Taxes On Family Business: Survey Results, Joseph H. Astrachan, Roger Tutterow
The Effect Of Estate Taxes On Family Business: Survey Results, Joseph H. Astrachan, Roger Tutterow
Faculty Articles
A survey of 1,003 businesses examined the effect of estate taxes on family business behavior, including investment, employment, and strategic decisions. The results strongly suggest that estate taxes have marked effects on business behavior. These effects are more pronounced in larger firms where their potential impact is of a greater magnitude.
Using Portfolio Reflections To Re-Form Instructional Programs And Build Curriculum, Sarah Robbins, Nancy Brandt, Susan Goering, Jeanette Nassif, Kathleen Wascha
Using Portfolio Reflections To Re-Form Instructional Programs And Build Curriculum, Sarah Robbins, Nancy Brandt, Susan Goering, Jeanette Nassif, Kathleen Wascha
Faculty Articles
An educator who finds merit in both content- and student-centered instruction may find it difficult to develop a classroom learning program with a firm theoretical base drawing on strengths from both perspectives. The implementation of a collaborative portfolio project as an ongoing curriculum reformation is described.
Questioning Aesthetics: Are Archivists Qualified To Make Appraisal Or Reappraisal Decisions Based On Aesthetic Judgments?, Kimberly J. Barata
Questioning Aesthetics: Are Archivists Qualified To Make Appraisal Or Reappraisal Decisions Based On Aesthetic Judgments?, Kimberly J. Barata
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
During the appraisal or reappraisal process, an item may be either accessioned into or remain intact as part of a collection owing to its intrinsic value. Judgments regarding the intrinsic value of an item range from the purely subjective to the totally ambiguous. The concept of intrinsic value experienced growing interest from the National Archives and Records Service (NAAS) as they began to embark on a large-scale reformatting project in 1979. Planning for this project raised the issue of whether certain documents should be retained in their original format or be destroyed following reformatting. In response to this issue, NAAS …

The Acquisition Of Visual Records Relating To Native Life In North America, Jim Burant
The Acquisition Of Visual Records Relating To Native Life In North America, Jim Burant
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
In 1991, the National Archives of Canada made its first deliberate acquisition of art works by an Indian artist, the Kwaguitl David Neel, who had produced a series of serigraphs relating to events concerning native-white relations in Canada. The first work, Life on the 18th Hole (figure 1 ), was inspired by the events at Oka, Quebec, where Mohawk warriors had blockaded a provincial highway and defied first Quebec provincial police and then Canadian federal troops for more than two months in 1990.1 The second work, Just Say No (figure 2), was a commentary on the stand taken by Elijah …

The Status Of Users In Archival Enterprise, Michael Widener
The Status Of Users In Archival Enterprise, Michael Widener
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
T. R. Schellenberg, the dean of modern archival enterprise, set a dual objective for the profession. "The end of all archival effort is to preserve valuable records and make them available for use," he wrote. When Schellenberg wrote these words some thirty-five years ago, archivists were oriented primarily toward the materials they worked with and perceived the users of these materials as a relatively small, elite group of scholars, mainly historians.

Jimmy Carter And The Presidential Library System, Richard Dees Funderburke
Jimmy Carter And The Presidential Library System, Richard Dees Funderburke
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Ralph Waldo Emerson felt that the study of history was significant to the individual for what it revealed about his own life. The monuments of other ages should be studied until the student "lives along the whole line of temples and sphinxes and catacombs, passes through them all with satisfaction, and they live again to the mind, or are now." The interest with which he might have viewed his own nation's monuments in the form of presidential libraries can only be surmised. He might have been appalled that the simple democratic nation he knew in the 1840s had come …

Acsas: Microcomputer-Based Subject Access, Lewis Cox
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
The Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) recently attempted to improve subject access to its holdings through the development of a computer-based subject access system. The project and the subject access system have been given the acronym "ACSAS" (pronounced access), for "Archival Computerized Subject Access System." This article describes the subject access system and its development and concludes with an analysis of the system and the future role of such systems.
