My Reconstructed Life, Eugen Schoenfeld Jan 2005

My Reconstructed Life, Eugen Schoenfeld

KSU Press Legacy Project

Memories tell us that we are bound by a golden chain with those who preceded us and those who come after us. We gain strength from memories.

I remember in 1944 traveling for two days in a freight car with padlocked doors and windows covered with barbed wire. No one in the car knew our destination. Now and then we glimpsed a name of a city where the train was shunted to sidings waiting for a clear track. Now and then voices of prayers could be heard. About sunset on the third day, my mother opened a package containing bread …

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris Jan 2005

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

The importance of primary source materials to scholarship is undeniable. Primary source materials can verify or contradict information accepted as true in history books and other secondary sources. They can tell the whole, or at least more complete, story of events. Unlike secondary sources, primary source materials offer first-hand accounts from the past, bringing history closer and making it feel more real. It can even be argued that primary source materials are less susceptible than published texts to the loss or misinterpretation of information over time in subsequent edition revisions. In particular among primary source materials, manuscripts such as diaries …

Beyond Surrender: Marian Sims, Francis B. Simkins, And Revisionism In Reconstruction South Carolina, David B. Parker Jan 2005

Beyond Surrender: Marian Sims, Francis B. Simkins, And Revisionism In Reconstruction South Carolina, David B. Parker

Faculty Articles

Historian Francis Butler Simkins's 1932 book 'South Carolina during Reconstruction' presented one of the earliest revisionist examinations of Reconstruction. Simkins suggested Reconstruction failed because it was not radical enough, and carpetbaggers could have succeeded had they confiscated land and destroyed the South's caste system. Simkins elaborated his views in his 1939 essay in the 'Journal of Southern History,' his paper "The Everlasting South" delivered to the 1946 meeting of the Southern Historical Association, and his 1954 presidential address to the Southern Historical Association. Simkins corresponded with novelist Marian McCamy Sims, who wrote seven novels set among the upper- and middle-class …

No Child Left Behind In Foreign Language Education, Lynne Mcclendon

Dimensions

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001, the revised Elementary and Secondary Education Act, is one of the most sweeping educational reform movements in recent times. While there are many subcomponents of this Act, one area specifically touches on foreign language education: “highly qualified teachers.” This article examines the term “highly qualified teacher” as defined by NCLB, as well as effective practices highly qualified foreign language teachers, curriculum program specialists, and college of education instructors can employ to leave no child behind in foreign language education. Using this information, teachers, curriculum program specialists, and college of education instructors …

Assessing Readiness Of Foreign Language Education Majors To Take The Praxis Ii Exam, Carol Wilkerson, Judith H. Schomber, Jana Sandarg

Dimensions

Ten of the 13 states in the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT) region require the Praxis II Exam for teacher licensure in French, German, or Spanish. Perceptions of high failure rates on this exam call into question the quality of teacher education programs. Test takers and reviewers find required tasks and performance levels on the Praxis II unaligned with the expectations for beginning teachers established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). After describing the sections of the exam and their limitations, this article offers strategies to prepare students for the tasks required and ways …

Stepping Out Of The Classroom To Increase Spanish Language Skills And Cultural Awareness, Betina Kaplan, Teresa Pérez-Gamboa Mar 2003

Stepping Out Of The Classroom To Increase Spanish Language Skills And Cultural Awareness, Betina Kaplan, Teresa Pérez-Gamboa

Dimensions

This article describes the experience of our college-level Spanish students who stepped out of their campus classrooms and into elementary school libraries, corridors, and classrooms to develop an exchange program. Chase Street Elementary School, like many other elementary schools in Athens, Georgia, has a large Hispanic student population composed mostly of recent immigrants with limited English proficiency. This experience served not only the Hispanic community of Athens, but our college students as well. Our students contribute to the reduction of the language barrier that separates teachers from students and their families, and, at the same time, they have the unique …

Group Study Abroad And Thematic Units, Sue Barry

Dimensions

This article describes the model for a Group Study Abroad Project to Peru for K-12 teachers of Spanish that took place during the summer of 2001. Thanks to a grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Special Collections Department of LSU Libraries and the LSU digital library have been digitizing, cataloging, and making available via the World Wide Web selected documents and publications from the era of the Louisiana Purchase held by LSU and the New Orleans City Archives. A goal of the grant was to enhance K-12 teaching and learning by working with Louisiana teachers to integrate the use of the digital collection into their classroom activities.
