Gatt/Wto Promotes Trade Strongly: Sample Selection And Model Specification, Xuepeng Liu
Gatt/Wto Promotes Trade Strongly: Sample Selection And Model Specification, Xuepeng Liu
Faculty Articles
Some recent empirical studies examine the impact of the GATT/WTO on trade. This paper investigates the sample selection bias and the gravity model specification issues in the literature. First, the GATT/WTO not only makes existing trading partners trade more at the intensive margin, but also creates new trading relationships at the extensive margin. Most existing papers exclude zero trade observations and hence ignore the extensive margin. Secondly, due to the violation of some maintained assumptions, the traditional log-linear gravity regressions fail to uncover the role of the GATT/WTO even at the intensive margin. Using a large bilateral panel dataset including …

Ecotourism In Dominica: Studying The Potential For Economic Development, Environmental Protection And Cultural Conservation, Vanessa Slinger-Friedman
Faculty Articles
Over the last 20 years, the government of the small Caribbean island nation of Dominica has pursued the development of ecotourism on the island. The hope is that this industry will promote dispersed economic development while providing environmental protection and cultural conservation. However, not enough has been done to determine whether or not the industry is achieving the desired results. To this end, this study explores the growth of the tourism industry on Dominica and shows that, while not perfect, ecotourism is providing some definite benefits to the island in this regard.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate international students’ opinions of the OISRS and to expose possible areas for service improvement.
Historically, the OISRS has focused on …

Dimensions
In selecting the theme for the 2009 conference, the SCOLT Executive Board wanted to emphasize the need for languages outside traditional career paths and the ways that language professionals can contribute to those careers; thus was born the idea of “Empowerment through Collaboration.” The SCOLT Board invited spokespersons from non-profit agencies and business organizations to share information about their need for languages via special collaborative sessions during the conference. This article describes recent collaboration resulting in legislation to empower the language community. It concludes with a series of interviews with individuals whose careers outside the language profession require language skills. …

Preparing Students For The Teacher Licensure Exam: It’S More Than Just The Content, Jana Sandarg, Judith Schomber
Dimensions
Licensure exams have become one of the most important factors in teacher certification. This article addresses ways to overcome these obstacles and proven strategies to enhance performance on licensure exams. In addition, the article addresses the need for the entire profession to become involved in the preparation of students for licensure exams, including guidance in locating resources and …

Addressing Business Agility Challenges With Enterprise Systems, D. L. Goodhue, D. Q. Chen, M. C. Boudreau, J. Cochran
Addressing Business Agility Challenges With Enterprise Systems, D. L. Goodhue, D. Q. Chen, M. C. Boudreau, J. Cochran
Faculty Articles
It is clear that systems agility (i.e., having a responsive IT infrastructure that can be changed quickly to meet changing business needs) has become a critical component of organizational agility. However, skeptics continue to suggest that, despite the benefits enterprise system packages provide, they are constraining choices for firms faced with agility challenges. The reason for this skepticism is that the tight integration between different parts of the business that enables many enterprise systems' benefits also increases the systems' complexity, and this increased complexity, say the skeptics, increases the difficulty of changing systems when business needs change. These persistent concerns …
Heaven Overland, Jim Murphy
Heaven Overland, Jim Murphy
KSU Press Legacy Project
These poems record, from our own language—spoken on the street in Atlanta or Dayton or Chicago, in the graveyard in Charleston, on the rivers of Ohio or Missouri or Illinois, on the road in Mississippi, or on the radio anywhere in America—momentary beauties, to show us that song, however rare, proceeds from the common tongue. So these poems promise that any speech, that any mouth, might be an occasion for beauty or blessing.
Everywhere in this collection, ears, eyes, minds open to discover new abundance in landscapes thought familiar. These poems discover in America and its history boundless vistas, to …

Trade And Income Convergence: Sorting Out The Causality, Xuepeng Liu
Trade And Income Convergence: Sorting Out The Causality, Xuepeng Liu
Faculty Articles
This paper studies the linkage between international trade and income convergence across countries. Different theories offer conflicting predictions regarding how they might affect each other. In the existing empirical literature estimating the trade impact on income convergence, a long-lasting problem is the reverse causality from income convergence to trade. This paper provides a disaggregated bilateral trade data analysis to solve this problem. The results show that the reverse causality from income convergence to trade exists in differentiated product sectors, but not in homogeneous product sectors. Trade in homogeneous sectors reduces the income gaps among trade partners, but it is not …

From Traditional Delivery To Distance Learning: Developing The Model, Marie F. Holbein
Faculty Articles
Today’s classrooms are no longer bound by geography. Distance learning has provided an attractive and increasingly highly regarded alternative to traditional face-to-face instruction. However, effective implementation requires a shift in thinking for both students and instructors. The purpose of this article is to describe a model for applying a traditional campus-based graduate course to a distance format.

The Belgian Connection, Lisa Signori
The Belgian Connection, Lisa Signori
Dimensions
The land known today as Belgium is home to many important historical and cultural icons that many associate with France. Charlemagne, Jacques Brel, René Magritte, Georges Simenon, and even the ubiquitous “French” fries, all have an intimate Belgian connection. When one thinks of Francophone cultures, however, the focus normally turns to Africa, Québec, the Caribbean, perhaps Switzerland, but almost never to Belgium. This article presents a cultural unit on French-speaking Belgium that illuminates the country’s linguistic and cultural geography, its history, politics, arts, and gastronomy. In addition to these basic culture capsules, the article offers suggestions for teaching and for …

Archival Work In A Surreal World: The Imagination Of George Saunders, Erica Olsen
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
When George Saunders’s first collection of short stories, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, came out in 1996 reviewers emphasized the surrealism of his fictional world of run-down theme parks and virtual-reality franchise businesses: "… a nightmarish post-apocalyptic world that might have been envisioned by Walt Disney on acid," wrote the Philadelphia Inquirer, while Newsweek called it "a cybernetic, postapocalyptic dystopia."

The Perceptual Northwest, James Lowry, Mark Patterson, William Forbes
The Perceptual Northwest, James Lowry, Mark Patterson, William Forbes
Faculty Articles
Our goal is to survey cultural perceptions defining the U.S. Northwest region. As geographers, we should concern ourselves with mental constructs of regions, as they can easily impede or facilitate communication. Assumptions of others’ regional boundaries and images may be erroneous. Over the past several decades, a handful of geographers have begun to examine these perceptual (or vernacular) maps and regions. Students at 21 colleges and universities were asked to identify: (1) boundaries of the U.S. Northwest region; (2) Northwest regional characteristics and symbols; and (3) what cities or other places best represent the Northwest.
Nationally, student respondents largely followed …
