Negotiating Infrastructural Citizenship Beyond The State: Philanthropy, Non-Profit Organizations, And The Flint Water Crisis, Melissa Heil
Negotiating Infrastructural Citizenship Beyond The State: Philanthropy, Non-Profit Organizations, And The Flint Water Crisis, Melissa Heil
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
The urban infrastructure literature has explored how infrastructure is tied to the politics of citizenship: states’ use of infrastructure to include/exclude populations and marginalized populations’ use of infrastructure to claim fuller citizenship. Often, this literature focuses on the relationship between governments and city dwellers, neglecting the role of other actors, like NGOs and philanthropic organizations, that influence infrastructural citizenship. A hallmark of neoliberalism in the Global North has been the transfer of responsibilities from the state to the non-profit sector, increasing these organizations’ power to shape urban citizenship. This paper examines how non-profit organizations participate in the politics of infrastructural …

Teaching Information Literacy In An Undergraduate Class On The Geography Of The Middle East, Reecia Orzeck
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Geography instructors have a role to play in helping their students to become more information literate. This is especially important today, given the complex and dynamic nature of our informational landscape, and given the evidence that young people lack much of the knowledge that is needed to engage with information critically. This paper reports on the effectiveness of an information literacy module that was included as part of a course on the Geography of the Middle East. It describes the design and rollout of the module, and the results of a study designed to assess the effectiveness of the module …

New Green Revolution In Ghana: Perceived Benefits, Challenges, And Implications For The Environment, Daniel Kpienbaareh, Abubakari Ahmed
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
This paper reflects on Africa's new green revolution (NGR) movement by drawing data from Ghana as an illustrative case to assess the benefits and challenges of NGR and discuss the long-term environmental implications of NGR interventions. We draw insights from agrarian change theory to understand the complexity of local, national, and international factors that interact to produce changes in agricultural systems that affect smallholder farmers in poor settings. Data were collected using qualitative methods based on the lived experiences of farmers and analyzed to understand farmers’ perspectives. We identified increased yield and income levels as crucial benefits of the NGR. …

A Geospatial Approach To Assessing The Impact Of Agroecological Knowledge And Practice On Crop Health In A Smallholder Agricultural Context, Daniel Kpienbaareh, Jinfei Wang, Isaac Luginaah, Rachel Bezner Kerr, Esther Lupafya, Laifolo Dakishoni
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
In the context of food insecurity in resource-poor settings, agroecology (AE) has emerged as an important approach promoted for improving crop productivity, yet few studies have demonstrated how a combination of agroecological methods can improve crop health and thereby crop productivity. Using a geospatial approach, this study investigated whether agroecological practices can improve crop health in smallholder contexts. We compared leaf area indexes (LAIs) of crops on AE and non-AE farms and prospectively predicted the impact of AE using vegetation indexes (VIs). We found that crops on AE farms produced higher average growing season LAIs for maize and pigeon peas …

Scaling And Scalar Analysis As A Framework For Research On Teacher Learning, Lara J. Handsfield
Scaling And Scalar Analysis As A Framework For Research On Teacher Learning, Lara J. Handsfield
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This paper argues for scalar analysis as a framework for understanding negotiations of competing ideological demands and power relationships in teacher learning. Two illustrative examples are presented, including video data of a student teacher (Camille) attempting to integrate multimodal and digital literacy practices into their instruction, and a research interview between Lara and Camille. Drawing on research in both literacy studies and applied linguistics, the illustrative scalar analyses move beyond linguistic understandings of discourse to also include embodied discourse and materiality as central to understanding complexities of teaching and teacher learning. Implications are presented for research and practice.

Idle Hands Are The Devil's Workshop? Exploring The Connections Between Prison-Work Release Programming, Post-Release Employment And Recidivism, Ryan Maranville
Student Research – Stevenson Center
This paper focuses on evaluations of employment-based reentry programs. It begins with an overview of recidivism, touching on the both theory and empirical research framing employment as a pivotal factor in the reentry process. Next, it reviews the limited assessments of work-release programming and their findings. The final sections examine the structural factors which complicate reentry, specifically low wages and community disorganization. And identifies the benefits of incorporating qualitative methods in criminological research as it relates to evaluating programs, their impact, and tying findings to program adaptations and future implementation.

How do school leaders make sense of the mess of the regimes of the normal (Warner, 1993) when they themselves are beyond the norm? While we may be beyond the normal, we are also “awash in the flow of the everyday” (Manalansan, 2018, p. 2). Though we may resist and see ourselves as beyond the norm (Weiser et al., 2019), we are never “in a position of exteriority in relation” (Foucault, 1978, p. 95) to the norms of power. Using data from several different projects collected over the past several years, we conceptualize a new way to consider not only …

Faculty hold widely varying perspectives on the benefits and challenges afforded by open access (OA) publishing. In the United States, conversations on OA models and strategy have been dominated by scholars affiliated with Carnegie R1 institutions. This article reports findings from interviews conducted with faculty at a Carnegie R2 institution, highlighting disciplinary and individual perspectives on the high costs and rich rewards afforded by OA. The results reiterate the persistence of a high degree of skepticism regarding the quality of peer review and business models associated with OA publishing. By exploring scholars’ perceptions of and experiences with OA publishing and …

AfriArch is an archaeological and paleoenvironmental data community designed to integrate datasets related to human-environmental interactions in Holocene Africa. Here we present a dataset of bioarchaeological stable isotope (C/N/O) and radiocarbon measurements from African archaeological sites spanning the Holocene. Modern measurements, when reported together with archaeological data in original publications, are also included. The dataset consists of 5568 entries and covers the entirety of Africa, though most isotopic research has been concentrated in southern Africa. The AfriArch isotopic dataset can be used in paleodietary, paleodemography, paleoclimatic, and paleoenvironmental studies. It can also be employed to highlight data gaps across space …

Trends In Nutrients Load And Driving Factors In Illinois River Basins, Olaoluwa David Oladuji
Theses and Dissertations
The demand for clean and potable water increases as the population number grows, and surface water serves as a significant source of water supply to many municipalities. However, the quality of surface waters is altered due to excess load of nutrients in the water bodies. For example, excess nitrate and dissolved phosphorus in water may lead to eutrophication. The 2019 bi-annual Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategies reported about 13% and 35% increases in nitrate and total phosphorus, respectively, across the statewide basins compared to the previous baseline data of 1980-1996. The biannual report stated that Illinois River basin was a …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
This study sought to determine if speech-language pathology graduate students found peer-to-peer teaching and experiential learning beneficial in learning how to assess the cranial nerves. Graduate students in a motor speech disorders course completed an in-class cranial nerve examination in which they either portrayed clinicians or patients. Student groups utilized a reflective practice approach by teaching their peers how to assess the cranial nerves. Intensive practice sessions were offered almost daily for two weeks prior to the exam. Thirty-seven students completed an online survey about their knowledge and confidence in assessing cranial nerves and identifying diagnoses before starting the training …

Journal of STEM Teacher Education
The STEM teacher workforce in the United States has faced a host of pressing challenges, including teacher shortages, pervasive job dissatisfaction, and high turnover, problems largely attributable to working conditions within schools and districts. These problems have been exacerbated in high-needs districts with fewer resources and more students from low-income communities. Since social network research has shown that workplace relationships are vital for retention, this study investigates the demographic and relational antecedents to what we dub ties of retention. We explore how demographic and relational properties affect the likelihood that teachers have “retention-friendly” networks, characterized by connections important for …
Digital Archival Literacy In The Classroom, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Elliott Kuecker
Digital Archival Literacy In The Classroom, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Elliott Kuecker
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Archival literacy has become a popular mode of literacy in the last ten years, given that archival research is not the exclusive purview of historians. Given the amount of open collections and exhibits, the possibility of teaching archival literacy skills is more accessible than ever. Importantly, archival literacy asks us to critically read against the common narrative that archival objects are pure evidence and archivists are neutral agents. Our presentation describes the importance of digital archival literacy and provides examples of implementation in classes, ad hoc workshops, and community engagement. We emphasize that all knowledge is a synthesis of various …

Watercolor Of Surface Water Reservoirs In West Java, Indonesia Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data, Cavien Izack Marcelyno Satia
Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater sources such as lakes, rivers, and reservoirs are essential part of water supply for irrigation, recreation, and most importantly, public and domestic water usage globally. Compared to groundwater that require costly facilities and infrastructure, freshwater source from reservoir can be treated efficiently and effectively to quickly meet public demand. In Indonesia, particularly, in the island of Java, there is a scarcity of freshwater source. There is less than 5% of available freshwater, which creates multiple water management issues such as water depletion during extensive pumping and dry period, and pollution of water due to high nutrient and wastewater input …
We Might Be Salvaged, Hannah Kroonblawd
We Might Be Salvaged, Hannah Kroonblawd
Theses and Dissertations
We Might Be Salvaged is a dissertation that hinges upon poetic loci of disaster, survival, despair, and hope. The dissertation includes a critical preface, “Beyond Repair,” which contextualizes the central creative work alongside the concerns of the Anthropocene, as well as the collective necessity of environmental justice and disability activism. The creative work, “We Might Be Salvaged,” explores contemporary catastrophes and the lingering hope of an unknown future. The final chapter, “Teaching in the Anthropocene,” provides a pedagogical link through the design of online undergraduate creative writing workshop courses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Risk-Based Deposit Insurance, Deposit Rates And Bank Failures: Evidence From Russia, Lucy Chernykh, Vladimir Kotomin
Risk-Based Deposit Insurance, Deposit Rates And Bank Failures: Evidence From Russia, Lucy Chernykh, Vladimir Kotomin
Faculty Publications – Finance, Insurance, and Law
Using the Russian banking system as a laboratory, we study the effect of a switch from fixed-rate deposit insurance to a risk-based system with premia tied to insured deposit rates offered by a bank. After the switch, increases in bank risk lead to reduced reliance on insured deposits, private banks without excessive capital stop raising insured deposit rates to fund loan growth, and the cost of insured deposits becomes a predictor of bank failures (beyond the CAMEL variables). Offering insured deposit rates notably above the market becomes a last resort to banks. The results suggest that risk-based deposit insurance schemes …

Using A Tracer Test To Assess The Fate And Transport Of Nitrate In A Saturated Buffer Zone, Alhassan Sahad Sahad
Using A Tracer Test To Assess The Fate And Transport Of Nitrate In A Saturated Buffer Zone, Alhassan Sahad Sahad
Theses and Dissertations
The Upper Mississippi Basin (UMB), which includes Illinois, has highly fertile soils and therefore, experiences intensive agricultural practices. While fertile, the soils do not drain well, resulting in the installation of tile-drainage systems. Agricultural practices within the UMB involves the application of nitrogen (N)-rich fertilizers. The tile systems coupled with the application of N fertilizers have led to the excessive export of nitrates as nitrogen (NO3-N) from the agricultural fields into surface and subsurface waters through subsurface tile drainage systems. Excess NO3-N contributes to eutrophication and to development of hypoxic zones in aquatic environments. One method that has exhibited success …
Thermal Controls On Hyporheic Flux And Streambed Flow Dynamics, Jake William Riedel
Thermal Controls On Hyporheic Flux And Streambed Flow Dynamics, Jake William Riedel
Theses and Dissertations
Heat is a naturally occurring and cost-effective tracer to study groundwater flow to, from, and throughout the subsurface. Often used for the quantification of groundwater discharge, heat has been used to identify gaining and losing portions of streams and in determining flow parameters such as hydraulic conductivity (K) or velocity. Connecting ground and surface reservoirs is an area known as the hyporheic zone (HZ) where waters from both reservoirs interact. The flux of water throughout the HZ is controlled by stream bedforms, sinuosity, surface water velocity, local water table, seasonality, and sediment K. K is dependent on both the viscosity …

Transport Of Suspended Sediment And Phosphorous In An Agricultural Watershed: A Case Study Of The Money Creek Watershed, Central Illinois, Oghenevwede Efobo
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Suspended sediment and phosphorus are a threat to surface waterbodies. Excessive supply of suspended sediment to streams can alter water quality, reduce reservoir storage capacity, and degrade ecological functions including the displacement of aquatic habitats. Phosphorus is a limiting nutrient in freshwater. Excessive phosphorus in streams has led to eutrophication, the development of harmful algal blooms and hypoxic conditions that restrict the water for fisheries, recreation, industry, and drinking. For the City of Bloomington, central Illinois, high nutrient loads and sediment concentrations are a major problem in water reservoirs. The primary sources of suspended sediment and phosphorus in the area …
