From La Cosa Nostra To La Cultura Del Narcisismo: Psychoanalysis As Public Philosophy In The Sopranos, Thomas Patrick Brown
From La Cosa Nostra To La Cultura Del Narcisismo: Psychoanalysis As Public Philosophy In The Sopranos, Thomas Patrick Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The aims for this thesis are to further investigate the show’s use of Tony’s psychotherapy as a narrative device in building the relationship between the work of art and the spectator. This device, I argue, possesses a Brechtian character: it not only breaks up the narrative action, but it also comments upon it. Most importantly, this device grounds spectators in a psychoanalytic outlook which enables the spectator to analyze the show’s central anti-hero, interpret the series of events around him, as well as the criticize the American climate he is a symbol for. I advance the thesis that The Sopranos, …

Not All Cities Are The Same: Variation In Animal Phenotypes Across Cities Within Urban Ecology Studies, Javier Delbarco-Trillo, Breanna J. Putman
Not All Cities Are The Same: Variation In Animal Phenotypes Across Cities Within Urban Ecology Studies, Javier Delbarco-Trillo, Breanna J. Putman
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
The sustained expansion of urban environments has been paralleled by an increase in the number of studies investigating the phenotypic changes of animals driven by urbanization. Most of these studies have been confined to only one urban center. However, as the types and strength of anthropogenic stressors differ across cities, a generalizable understanding of the effects of urbanization on urban-dwelling species can only be reached by comparing the responses of urban populations from the same species across more than one city. We conducted phylogenetic meta-analyses on data for animal species (including both invertebrates and vertebrates) for which measures about any …

Transport Of Suspended Sediments And Phosphorus In An Agricultural Watershed: A Case Study Of The Money Creek Watershed, Central Illinois., Oghenevwede Efobo
Theses and Dissertations
Suspended sediment and phosphorus are among the major pollutants of stream ecosystems. Suspended sediment has been documented as vector for nutrient transport, specifically phosphorus, in streams. Sources of suspended sediments include agricultural fields, channel sediments, and streambanks. Suspended sediments within the stream channel could fill up reservoirs over time thus, reducing reservoir storage capacity. Suspended sediments can cover breeding and nesting areas of aquatic habitats, leading to their displacements. Sources of phosphorus include point sources such as wastewater treatment plants and industrial effluent, and nonpoint sources such as agricultural fields and urban runoff. Phosphorus is a limiting nutrient in freshwater …

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
The physical processes that facilitate long-distance translation of large-volume gravity slides remain poorly understood. To better understand these processes and the controls on runout distance, we conducted an outcrop and microstructural characterization of the Sevier gravity slide across the former land surface and summarize findings of four key sites. The Sevier gravity slide is the oldest of three mega-scale (>1,000 km2) collapse events of the Marysvale volcanic field (Utah, USA). Field observations of intense deformation, clastic dikes, pseudotachylyte, and consistency of kinematic indicators support the interpretation of rapid emplacement during a single event. Furthermore, clastic dikes and characteristics of …

Human Impacts On Erosion In Starved Rock State Park, Illinois, Usa, Savannah Leigh Thielbar
Theses and Dissertations
State and National parks are some of the most visited wildlife areas within the United States, making local geologic features more susceptible to human-induced change. As more people visit these parks throughout the year, we see major impacts on the interactions between biological and geological processes. This study determines if human activity, through rock carvings, influence erosion within Starved Rock State Park and provides a new perspective on our compounding anthropogenic influence on Earth. Through natural stream and artificial human erosion, the base of the bedrock slope potentially changes at a much faster rate than the upper portion of the …

Understanding Groundwater Flow In A Saturated Buffer Zone ( Sbz ) Using Numerical Models: Case Study Of T 3 Site, Mclean County, Central Illinois, Nnaemeka Henry Nsude
Theses and Dissertations
Loss of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, from agricultural lands in the Midwest affects farm productivity and environmental quality. Nutrient runoff from lands discharged into streams degrades the aquatic ecosystem through eutrophication and subsequent hypoxic conditions. The presence of nitrogen also threatens the potability of numerous aquifer bodies globally due to their high solubility in water. To tackle this problem, best management practices such as Saturated Buffer Zone (SBZ) are implemented to reduce nitrogen from nitrate-laden tile water from agricultural lands before being discharged into streams. Groundwater flow and interactions at SBZ are not well understood. To aid the …

Assessment Of Spatial And Temporal Variations In Chloride Concentration In An Agricultural Tile-Drained Area In Central Illinois, Okiemute Commander
Theses and Dissertations
Long-term increase in chloride (Cl-) concentration in surface water and groundwater from anthropogenic sources, including deicing salts, agriculture, septic effluents, and wastewater treatment plants is a growing cause for concern all over the world. In rural midwestern US with predominant agricultural land usage and less impervious surface cover, agriculture may serve as a potential source for Cl- in surface and groundwater systems. A saturated riparian buffer (SRB) installed adjacent to a central Illinois stream to reduce nutrient losses was used to identify populations of Cl-, substantiate agricultural influence, and identify spatial and temporal Cl- variations within the SRB. 2297 water …
Designing For Multigenerational Households In The United States, Dongniya Xiu
Designing For Multigenerational Households In The United States, Dongniya Xiu
Theses and Dissertations
Aging has become a challenging issue worldwide as well as in the United States where the high cost of nursing homes and unfriendly insurance plans have exacerbated the situation. To address this issue, multigenerational living arrangements have gained attention to bring financial, social, and environmental benefits, and reduce social isolation and loneliness among older adults. Researchers employed qualitative research methods by gathering data from open-ended interviews and observations to explore interior design needs and concerns and to identify necessary adjustments to promote aging-friendly living environments for multigenerational households. A total of 8 participants from four multigenerational households were conducted in …

Multi-Year Analysis Of Groundwater Temperature Fluctuations In A Shallow Aquifer Sysytem Influenced By A Tile-Drain, Jack Thomas Wassik
Theses and Dissertations
Groundwater temperature plays a significant role in regulating geochemical, biological and physical processes with the subsurface with wide ranging environmental and societal impacts. Air temperature, weather conditions and lithology exhibit control on magnitude and timing of thermal responses that ultimately control groundwater temperature. Historical groundwater, tile water, stream and air temperature data from the T3 site were analyzed, including groundwater temperature data from multiple depths was analyzed. Additionally, statistical analyses between the temperature datasets were performed in order to interpret potential relationships. Air temperature was found to be the primary control of groundwater temperatures, though its affect being muted as …

The Texas Coast: Ship Channel Network Of The Petroleum Age, Alan Lessoff
The Texas Coast: Ship Channel Network Of The Petroleum Age, Alan Lessoff
Faculty Publications – History
This article provides an overview of the Texas Gulf Coast as a port city region dedicated above all to oil and gas. By the late 1800s, the same trends in transportation and industry that encouraged ship channel construction around the world drew attention to schemes to transform the Gulf Coast’s shallow bays and estuaries into inland deep-water harbors. An added factor in Texas was the vulnerability of Galveston and other coastal locations to hurricanes. Between 1902, when construction began on the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel, and the 1950s–60s, when a deep-water channel opened at Matagorda Bay along the mid-Texas coast, …
‘I’M Not A Virus’: Asian Hate In Donald Trump’S Rhetoric, Jennifer Zheng, Joseph Zompetti
‘I’M Not A Virus’: Asian Hate In Donald Trump’S Rhetoric, Jennifer Zheng, Joseph Zompetti
Faculty Publications - Communications
Since the start of Covid-19, anti-Asian sentiment spiked. From March 2020 to June 2021, there were a total of 9,081 self-reported incidents of hate across the United States (Stop AAPI Hate. (2021). As Covid-19 spread into the U.S., President Trump immediately blamed China by referring to the virus as the ‘Chinese Virus’ and used the hashtag #ChineseVirus on Twitter (Weise, E. 2021). Anti-Asian hashtags soared after Donald Trump first tied COVID-19 to China on Twitter. (USA Today. https://www. usatoday.com). Anti-Asian rhetoric expressed on Twitter grew after Trump’s tweet about the ‘Chinese virus,’ and the number of Chinese and other Asian …
Every Tree Fixed With A Purpose: Contesting Value In Olmsted’S Parks, Eric S. Godoy
Every Tree Fixed With A Purpose: Contesting Value In Olmsted’S Parks, Eric S. Godoy
Faculty Publications - Philosophy
Olmsted was an influential landscape architect whose works include many parks, recreation grounds and more. Inspired by Romantic and transcendentalist thinkers, he developed ‘pastoral transcendentalism’, a style of designing parks that mimicked natural spaces to reproduce their values within cities. Although environmental justice scholars have pointed out how these designs limit access to parks, I argue that environmental philosophers have not adequately discussed Olmsted, particularly his axiology of nature. Reflecting on it reveals how environmental injustice consists not only of restricting access to nature to protect its essential value – for Olmsted, scenery that could induce a contemplative mindset – …
Art Evading Confinement: Abolition As Universal Design, Albert Stabler
Art Evading Confinement: Abolition As Universal Design, Albert Stabler
Faculty Publications – Art
Universal Design, initially an approach to designing barrier-free architectural spaces for disabled people, has primarily been adapted to schooling through the Universal Design for Learning framework. Contemporary abolitionism is a visionary grassroots movement to make prisons and jails obsolete, which has been brought into education discourse primarily through considering urban public schools as institutions of policing and punishment. By considering these strategies for reforming and ending confinement, respectively, this essay argues for a more expansive understanding of access in education. The argument for their compatibility in arts education is articulated first through reviewing shared aspects of these two approaches, then …

Learning in asynchronous online environments has gained importance over the last several decades, and educational environment shifts from the COVID-19 pandemic appear to have increased this need. Science educators and students need information about which approaches work in the asynchronous environment where informal feedback tends to be reduced, compared to other teaching modalities. In this study, we asynchronously implemented a learning module across 5 institutions that guided students (N = 199) from prescriptive data analysis through guided inquiry and eventually to open inquiry. The module focuses on the science behind climate change. Students work with the same authentic data sets …
