Assessment Of Temporal Variations In Chloride Concentration In An Agricultural Tile-Drained Area In Mclean County, Central Illinois, Okiemute Commander
Assessment Of Temporal Variations In Chloride Concentration In An Agricultural Tile-Drained Area In Mclean County, Central Illinois, Okiemute Commander
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Increase in chloride (Cl-) concentration in surface water and groundwater from anthropogenic sources including deicing salts, agriculture, septic effluents, and wastewater treatment plants is a growing cause for concern all over the world. In non-urban areas where there is less impervious surface cover, agriculture could account for a larger percentage of Cl-source in water systems. One of the major sources of Cl-in non-urban areas is potash (KCl), an agricultural fertilizer used annually to grow soybean and corn throughout the Midwest especially in Illinois. This study is being conducted in a saturated buffer zone (SBZ) adjacent to an agricultural field in …
Using An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Equipped With A Multispectral Sensor To Visually Map Water Quality Parameters In Drinking Water Reservoirs., Jerome Komas
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Surface drinking water infrastructure is an integral part of the development and sustainability of societies around the world. However, these surface freshwater resources have been a challenge to monitor due to the vast number of in-situ samples needed to accurately quantify constituents, expenses of equipment, coordination of personnel, and lab cost. Lake Bloomington and Evergreen Lake (Hudson, Illinois) are two vital surface water features that serve as the drinking water reservoirs for the Bloomington area. Both reservoirs are within agricultural watersheds, with watershed inputs typically being high in turbidity and nitrate. We utilized an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) coupled with …
Breaking Down A Tracer In A Saturated Buffer Zone: Comparing The Use Of Rhodamine Wt To Sodium Chloride, Joseph Hoberg
Breaking Down A Tracer In A Saturated Buffer Zone: Comparing The Use Of Rhodamine Wt To Sodium Chloride, Joseph Hoberg
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Tracer tests are a common means to discern hydrologic and transport properties of an aquifer. Conservative ion tracers, such as dissolved salts, are common choices for use as groundwater tracers, but the introduction of large quantities of salts can elevate the concentrations to acute levels for organisms and can create density driven flows. Rhodamine WT dye is widely used in karst systems but not in Darcian systems. We explored the questions “Can Rhodamine WT dye be used as a groundwater tracer is a Darcian system comprised of weathered diamicton?”, and “How does the transport of Rhodamine compare to transport of …

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Water is one of the most useful resources available to mankind, as valuable as this resource is to lives, the demand for high quality potable water increases as populations grows. However, one of the major global challenges is related to water quality issues that come from excess presence of nutrients in water bodies. For example, excess nitrate and phosphorus in waterbodies has led to eutrophication and development of harmful algae bloom. This led to an increase in the hypoxia or dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico. The sources of these nutrients into waterbodies are transported mainly from point and …

Geology, Geochronology, And Preliminary Rare-Earth Element ( Ree ) Occurrence In The Bald Mountain 7.5-Minute Quadrangle, North Central Wyoming, Usa, Michael Sell
Theses and Dissertations
This project has constructed a detailed bedrock geologic map of the Bald Mountain, Wyoming 7.5-Minute Quadrangle (Scale 1:24,000) and analyzed the occurrence of rare-earth elements (REE’s) in the Cambrian age Flathead and Archean basement. This research advances the scientific understanding of the geology of the Bighorn Mountains and Archean geology of the Wyoming Archean Province (WAP). The structure and geochronology of the Bald Mountain inlier, a region of Archean bedrock that occurs 18.6 miles (~30 km) to the northwest of the greater Bighorns Archean massif, was studied using traditional field mapping and U-Pb isotopic age dating. The goals of this …

Improving Water Quality Through Reducing Agricultural Nutrient Loss: Field Pennycress As A Cover Crop, Mujen Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Agricultural nutrient loss through water runoff from the Upper Mississippi (UM) River Basin is one of the major contributing sources to the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic dead zone. Cover cropping has been identified as one strategy for farmers to use to reduce nutrient loss from their fields. However, the upfront costs and slow economic return of implementing cover crops prevent farmers from widely adopting traditional cover crops.Field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) is an emerging potential “cash cover crop” species that may provide the soil and environmental benefits of traditional cover crops and the economic incentive farmers need to widely implement cover …

British Colonial Strategies To Control The Influenza Epidemic Of 1918 To 1919 In Ashanti, Dennis Baffour Awuah
British Colonial Strategies To Control The Influenza Epidemic Of 1918 To 1919 In Ashanti, Dennis Baffour Awuah
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to examine the strategies and policies that were employed by the British colonial administration to control the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 in Ashanti. I argue that the varying philosophies of both the colonial administration and the Native population in Ashanti on health and medicine influenced the response trajectory to the disease. It also explores the aspects of Indigenous medical practices which are largely concerned with the religion or beliefs of the people. Before the outbreak of influenza, the colonial administration started a campaign to promote Western medicine while antagonizing Indigenous medicine. To an extent, this made the …

The artworks presented in this statement are my visual vocabulary discussing the experiences of the diaspora. They discuss how people of the diaspora, especially the Ghanaian/African diaspora, negotiates spaces away from their homeland. On the other hand, they discuss the “diasporan’s” experiences of being a stranger in their homeland during a visit after a long stay away. Premised on being in the diaspora without my young family, I discuss my experiences of separation, belonging, fear, anxiety, perception, pain, stress, nostalgia, confusion, acceptance, rejection, and other complexities of living a dual life and having a transnational identity.
The Urgency For A Transnational Feminist Methodology: An Inclusive Analytical Framework For Neocolonialism And Globalization, Sanam Shahmiri
The Urgency For A Transnational Feminist Methodology: An Inclusive Analytical Framework For Neocolonialism And Globalization, Sanam Shahmiri
Theses and Dissertations
I propose a methodology of literary study to be used in a wide range of disciplines and genres. While there have been numerous applications of postcolonial theory to the analysis of texts produced before, during, and after colonization, this transnational feminist methodology (TFM) is updated or reinvented to include discussions of the psychological and material ramifications of neocolonialism and neo-imperialism, especially about the immigrant experience—in particular, the perspective of children of immigrants living in diasporic communities. The work’s focus on postcolonial feminism is complicated by looking at gender, race, trans-nationality, and other identity factors that shape the work of writers …
Revenue Inequalities Across Public Universities In The Midwest: What Differentiates The Haves And The Have Nots?, Edward Vize
Revenue Inequalities Across Public Universities In The Midwest: What Differentiates The Haves And The Have Nots?, Edward Vize
Theses and Dissertations
There is a deepening divide between higher education institutions that can sustain themselves fiscally in the wake of declines in state funding and those institutions that are struggling to sustain needed revenues. This research analyzes changes in revenue patterns from 2000-2015 in Midwestern public four-year colleges and universities to the extent that revenue inequality contributes to a widening gap between well-resourced and less-resourced institutions. Revenue shifts that appear to be contributing to bifurcation between haves and have nots colleges and universities. The study applied quantitative descriptive analysis to Delta Cost Project revenue and institutional characteristic data. Data over a 16-year …

Confronting National Imagination: American Identity And Hand-Me-Down History, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Caitlin Stewart
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
This presentation examined historical and contemporary textbooks from ISU Special Collections and the Teaching Materials Center in the context of current and emerging dialogs about identity politics in education.
The roots of modern American history curriculum can be traced back to ubiquitous stories that are intimately tied to a constructed national identity. This presentation critically examines the intersection of national imagination and history education by examining one narrative from early adoption in history education to today's textbooks.
Critically analyzing American history can feel contradictory to a foundational piece of American identity. As a result, constructing an inclusive curriculum can feel …

Water Disconnection And Billing Policy In Central Illinois, Melissa Heil, Rebekah Bollin, Luke Gallagher
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Over ten percent of American households face unaffordable water bills. When households have overdue bills, they are usually subjected to service disconnection by the water utility. Water disconnection policy is set at the local level, which can result in spatial variation with respect to how lenient or strict disconnection policies are. Examining the case of the central Illinois region, this paper introduces a methodology for 1) chronicling this variation and 2) analyzing which populations are most affected by strict billing and disconnection policies.

Data Scraping Youtube For The Study Of Lieder Reception, Rachel E. Scott
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
A growing body of literature has shifted aesthetic attention from composition to performance, or the performing activity, and asserts that the act of performance creates meaning. Scholars have emphasized differences between the passive consumption and active making of – or even listening to – music. As I sought to understand the impact of performance on Alma Mahler's legacy, I identified the need to gather as much data as possible on who, what, where, when, why, and how her songs were performed. This need led me to evaluate the metadata associated with recordings of Alma Mahler's songs in the WorldCat union …

Estimating Groundnut Yield In Smallholder Agriculture Systems Using Planetscope Data, Daniel Kpienbaareh, Kamaldeen Mohammed, Isaac Luginaah, Jinfei Wang, Rachel Bezner Kerr, Esther Lupafya, Laifolo Dakishoni
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Crop yield is related to household food security and community resilience, especially in smallholder agricultural systems. As such, it is crucial to accurately estimate within-season yield in order to provide critical information for farm management and decision making. Therefore, the primary objective of this paper is to assess the most appropriate method, indices, and growth stage for predicting the groundnut yield in smallholder agricultural systems in northern Malawi. We have estimated the yield of groundnut in two smallholder farms using the observed yield and vegetation indices (VIs), which were derived from multitemporal PlanetScope satellite data. Simple linear, multiple linear (MLR), …
Barriers To Accessing Emergency Water Infrastructure: Lessons From Flint, Michigan, Melissa Heil
Barriers To Accessing Emergency Water Infrastructure: Lessons From Flint, Michigan, Melissa Heil
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Several high-profile cases of water service interruption have occurred in United States communities over the last decade, halting the usual operations of water infrastructures. In these situations, governments and NGOs have created emergency water infrastructures, such as bottled water distribution sites, to meet residents' water needs. This paper examines the accessibility of such emergency water distribution sites by analysing the case of Flint, Michigan. Drawing on interviews with community leaders in Flint who administered the city's bottled water distribution programmes, this paper identifies barriers to access in the city's emergency water infrastructure that stem from and deepen pre-existing socio-spatial inequality. …

Stream Recovery Post Channelization: A Case Study Of Low-Gradient Streams In Central Illinois, Usa, Joseph P. Becker, Eric W. Peterson
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Stream channelization, which entails reducing the sinuosity of a stream, widening, and in some cases deepening the stream channel, is a widespread practice in agricultural regions. Channelization efforts in central Illinois have significant impacts on the geomorphology, flow regime, and sediment transport both in and adjacent to modified reaches. The goal of this study was to characterize the changes in stream channels by comparing three streams that are at various stages of recovery post channelization, 5 years (1900N), 7 years (Frog), and 35 years (Bray), to an unmodified stream reach (Crooked) and estimate a recovery rate. Measured channel slopes within …

Devonian Upper Ocean Redox Trends Across Laurussia: Testing Potential Influences Of Marine Carbonate Lithology On Bulk Rock I/Ca Signals, Ruliang He, Maya Elrick, James Day, Wanyi Lu, Zunli Lu
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
The Devonian is characterized by major changes in ocean-atmosphere O2 concentrations, colonialization of continents by plants and animals, and widespread marine anoxic events associated with rapid d13C excursions and biotic crises. However, the long-term upper ocean redox trend for the Devonian is still not well understood. This study presents new I/Ca data from well-dated Lower Devonian through Upper Devonian limestone sections from the Great Basin (western Laurussia) and the Illinois Basin (central Laurussia). In addition, to better address potential influences of lithology and stratigraphy on I/Ca redox signals, I/Ca data are reported here as carbonate lithology-specific. Results indicate that lithologic …

[In lieu of an abstract, the synopsis is presented] Nor Any Drop to Drink: Flint’s Water Crisis (2018) is a 124-minute-long documentary directed by Dr Cedric Taylor, a sociologist with expertise in environmental justice and racial health disparities, with cinematography by Daniel Bracken. Nor Any Drop to Drink examines the causes of the Flint water crisis and documents the crisis’s impacts on city residents years after the initial water contamination. The first half of the film analyses the political roots of the water crisis: the imposition of emergency management in Flint, a system of undemocratic rule in which the governor …
The Politics Of Owing: Accounting, Water Disconnection, And Austerity Urbanism In Detroit, Melissa Heil
The Politics Of Owing: Accounting, Water Disconnection, And Austerity Urbanism In Detroit, Melissa Heil
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
With the rise of austerity urbanism, contemporary urban governance has been described as “rule by accountancy.” Yet the intricacies of accounting practice have been underexplored in the austerity urbanism literature. Drawing on insights from critical accounting studies, I interrogate accounting practices as political exercises that draw people and institutions into ties of obligation (accountability), shape social relations, and structure the conditions of urban life. Through this lens, practices of accounting can be understood not just as a technocratic tool of the financialized state, but as a contested terrain of urban political struggle. Examining the case of austerity-driven water service disconnections …
