Lung Flute Improves Symptoms And Health Status In Copd With Chronic Bronchitis: A 26 Week Randomized Controlled Trial, Sanjay Sethi, Jingjing Yin, Pamela K. Anderson
Biostatistics: Faculty Publications
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by mucus hypersecretion that contributes to disease related morbidity and is associated with increased mortality. The Lung Flute® is a new respiratory device that produces a low frequency acoustic wave with moderately vigorous exhalation to increase mucus clearance. We hypothesized that the Lung Flute, used on a twice daily basis will provide clinical benefit to patients with COPD with chronic bronchitis.
Methods: We performed a 26 week randomized, non-intervention controlled, single center, open label trial in 69 patients with COPD and Chronic Bronchitis. The primary endpoint was change in respiratory symptoms measured …

Fast Inverse Distance Weighting-Based Spatiotemporal Interpolation: A Web-Based Application Of Interpolating Daily Fine Particulate Matter Pm2.5 In The Contiguous U.S. Using Parallel Programming And K-D Tree, Lixin Li, Travis Losser, Charles Yorke, Reinhard E. Piltner
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Epidemiological studies have identified associations between mortality and changes in concentration of particulate matter. These studies have highlighted the public concerns about health effects of particulate air pollution. Modeling fine particulate matter PM2.5exposure risk and monitoring day-to-day changes in PM2.5 concentration is a critical step for understanding the pollution problem and embarking on the necessary remedy. This research designs, implements and compares two inverse distance weighting (IDW)-based spatiotemporal interpolation methods, in order to assess the trend of daily PM2.5 concentration for the contiguous United States over the year of 2009, at both the census block group level and county level. …

Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva, James P. Braselton
Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva, James P. Braselton
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Epistasis is the interaction between two or more genes to control a single phenotype. We model epistasis of the prey in a two-locus two-allele problem in a basic predator-prey relationship. The resulting model allows us to examine both population sizes as well as genotypic and phenotypic frequencies. In the context of several numerical examples, we show that if epistasis results in an undesirable or desirable phenotype in the prey by making the particular genotype more or less susceptible to the predator or dangerous to the predator, elimination of undesirable phenotypes and then genotypes occurs.

Fejér And Suffridge Polynomials In The Delayed Feedback Control Theory, Dmitriy Dmitrishin, Anna Khamitova, Anatolii Korenovskyi, Alexander M. Stokolos
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
A remarkable connection between optimal delayed feedback control (DFC) and complex polynomial mappings of the unit disc is established. The explicit form of extremal polynomials turns out to be related with the Fejer polynomials. The constructed DFC can be used to stabilize cycles of one-dimensional non-linear discrete systems.

Resistive Flow In A Weakly Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensate, Fred Jendrzejewski, Stephen Eckel, Nicholas Murray, C. Lanier, Mark Edwards, Christopher J. Lobb, Gretchen K. Campbell
Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We report the direct observation of resistive flow through a weak link in a weakly interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Two weak links separate our ring-shaped superfluid atomtronic circuit into two distinct regions, a source and a drain. Motion of these weak links allows for creation of controlled flow between the source and the drain. At a critical value of the weak link velocity, we observe a transition from superfluid flow to superfluid plus resistive flow. Working in the hydrodynamic limit, we observe a conductivity that is 4 orders of magnitude larger than previously reported conductivities for a Bose-Einstein condensate with …

The NSF Pathways Project studied the development of environmental literacy in students from grades six through high school. Learning progressions for environmental literacy were developed to explicate the trajectory of learning. The Pathways QR research team supported this effort by studying the role of quantitative reasoning (QR) as a support or barrier to developing environmental literacy. An iterative research methodology was employed which included targeted student interviews to establish QR learning progression progress variables and elements comprising those progress variables, development of a QR learning progression framework, and closed-form QR assessments to verify the progression. In this paper the focus …
Existence Of Positive Solutions For P(X)-Laplacian Equations With A Singular Nonlinear Term, Jingjing Liu, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao
Existence Of Positive Solutions For P(X)-Laplacian Equations With A Singular Nonlinear Term, Jingjing Liu, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this article, we study the existence of positive solutions for the p(x)-Laplacian Dirichlet problem −∆p(x)u = λf(x, u) in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ RN. The singular nonlinearity term f is allowed to be either f(x, s) → +∞, or f(x, s) → +∞ as s → 0+ for each x ∈ Ω. Our main results generalize the results in [15] from constant exponents to variable exponents. In particular, we give the asymptotic behavior of solutions of a simpler equation which is useful for finding supersolutions of differential equations with variable exponents, which is of independent …

Utilizing Tutors In The Classroom: An Extension Of Supplemental Instruction To Increase Student Performance And Retention, Evelyn Doman
Utilizing Tutors In The Classroom: An Extension Of Supplemental Instruction To Increase Student Performance And Retention, Evelyn Doman
Georgia Educational Researcher
Supplemental Instruction (SI) has widely been used in university classrooms around the world. However, many obstacles face SI – including low student attendance, lack of faculty support, and recognition of today’s online generation. This research helps to fill the gap in SI by posing to solve the problems mentioned above by extending SI into the classroom with the assistance of tutors. In response to the growing number of students and lack of space and instructors to accommodate the exploding enrollment, an initiative called “Tutors in the Classroom (TIC)” was started at a 4-year liberal arts college near Atlanta. TIC involved …
Beliefs Of Efficacy And Elementary Teachers’ Computational Skills, Vanessa Hinton, Margaret Flores, Kate Simmons
Beliefs Of Efficacy And Elementary Teachers’ Computational Skills, Vanessa Hinton, Margaret Flores, Kate Simmons
Georgia Educational Researcher
Early mathematics content that is taught in elementary school lays the foundation for students’ advanced mathematics performance. Thus, researchers show it is important that pre-service elementary teachers build a strong background in numbers and operations, as well as efficacy beliefs in mathematics instruction. This study expands the literature in the investigation of pre-service teachers’ efficacy beliefs and mathematical knowledge by making comparisons of pre-service elementary teachers’ views of efficacy to their overall ability in computation skills. Results show that elementary pre-service teachers who demonstrated lower scores in efficacy beliefs also had significantly lower computation scores. Implications for teacher preparation are …
Geometry: A Medium To Facilitate Geometric Reasoning Among Sixth Grade African-American Males, Olufunke Adefope
Geometry: A Medium To Facilitate Geometric Reasoning Among Sixth Grade African-American Males, Olufunke Adefope
Georgia Educational Researcher
In this article, the author describes how a curricular unit that provided opportunities for active engagement and participation was used to support the geometric reasoning of sixth grade African American (AA) male students. The curricular unit was designed to support students’ understanding of quadrilaterals. Data sources (pre- and post-tests, video recordings of classroom episodes, mathematics interviews) were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods. Findings showed that students improved in their understanding of quadrilateral classifications. Specifically, students were able to use their knowledge of geometry to evaluate the relationships between pairs of quadrilaterals. However, levels of understanding were varied. Little research …
