The Reading And Writing Connection: Merging Two Reciprocal Content Areas, Renee Moran, Monica Billen Jun 2014

The Reading And Writing Connection: Merging Two Reciprocal Content Areas, Renee Moran, Monica Billen

Georgia Educational Researcher

The purpose of this article is make connections between two content areas, reading and writing, which have traditionally been separated and consider the relationship between their theoretical underpinnings. Based on their reciprocal nature, the authors posit that students could greatly benefit by reading and writing being taught simultaneously. Relying on this premise, this article provides the reader with three practical strategies that could be applied in the literacy classroom to intertwine reading and writing. These practical strategies include: classroom blogs, graphic depictions, and pen pal responses to literature.

Enriching Teaching And Learning In A Teacher Education Course Through A Field Experience Choice Assignment In Service-Learning, Nancy M. Arrington Jun 2014

Enriching Teaching And Learning In A Teacher Education Course Through A Field Experience Choice Assignment In Service-Learning, Nancy M. Arrington

Teaching & Learning: Faculty Publications

With a purpose of enriching teaching and learning in her classroom, an early childhood education professor implements a service learning option into an introductory curriculum course with 25 students (preservice teachers) enrolled. The study, using both qualitative and quantitative means, measures the attainment of course objectives in students; and compares their ratings statements and coded narrative reflections. Results indicate that the eight students engaged in service learning in their field experience did as well as the 17 students not engaged in service learning on their pre- and post-test analysis, and in their final grades. The student reflections revealed that students …

Eigenvalue Estimates Of Laplacians Defined By Fractal Measures, Sze-Man Ngai Jun 2014

Eigenvalue Estimates Of Laplacians Defined By Fractal Measures, Sze-Man Ngai

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Presentations (1991-2022)

We study various lower and upper estimates for the first eigenvalue of Dirichlet Laplacians defined by positive Borel measures on bounded open subsets of Euclidean spaces. These Laplacians and the corresponding eigenvalue estimates differ from classical ones in that the defining measures can be singular. By using properties of self-similar measures, such as Strichartz's second-order self-similar identities, we improve some of the eigenvalue estimates.

College Students’ Attitudes Towards Adults With Developmental Disabilities: Does Direct Contact Make A Difference?, Caroline E. Greene May 2014

College Students’ Attitudes Towards Adults With Developmental Disabilities: Does Direct Contact Make A Difference?, Caroline E. Greene

Honors College Theses

Data were collected from thirty college students who participated in an alternative break trip and approximately seventy college students who did not attend the trip. Study subjects served as counselors at a camp for adults with developmental disabilities. Data were collected using five measures: a) before the week started, students filled out a survey which questioned their comfort level and attitude when interacting with this population; b) this same survey was administered to a random sample of college students who did not attend the break trip c) at camp, students kept a journal throughout the week documenting their experiences; d) …

Resilience And Self-Control Among Georgia Southern Students: A Comparative Study Between Rotc Students And Nonrotc Students, Kristen N. Campbell

Honors College Theses

As American soldiers are coming home from fighting the War on Terror, we are seeing an increase in soldiers suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Recently, there has been a shift from medical interventions to help those affected cope with the disorder, to prevention. The military has begun implementing resilience training programs for officers and leaders. These programs are designed to shed light on resilience and attempt to increase resilience. For instance, the Army’s Master Resilience Training program is designed to teach officers about resilience and leadership in a way that they can teach this information to their unit. Cadets …

Polyethylene Glycol Containing Rompolymers For The Modification Of Neuro-Protective Hemoglobin, Andrea L. Mccollum Apr 2014

Polyethylene Glycol Containing Rompolymers For The Modification Of Neuro-Protective Hemoglobin, Andrea L. Mccollum

Honors College Theses

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has shown the ability to improve compatibility when used in combination with cell-free hemoglobin in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. It has been demonstrated that the covalently bonded PEG increases the hydrodynamic radius of the hemoglobin and hence generates a physical barrier while slowing down the oxygen delivery of the strongly oxidative hemoglobin. In this context, I have been working on the development of synthetic pathways to incorporate PEG into monomers and polymers through both direct modification of (7-oxa)norbornene derivatives and post polymerization modification. Starting from the (7-oxa)norbornene anhydride derivatives, we have developed pathways to cationic …

Generalizations Of The Inverse Weibull And Related Distributions With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Tao Yang Apr 2014

Generalizations Of The Inverse Weibull And Related Distributions With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Tao Yang

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, the generalized inverse Weibull distribution including the exponentiated or proportional reverse hazard and Kumaraswamy generalized inverse Weibull distributionsare presented. Properties of these distributions including the behavior of the hazard and reverse hazard functions, moments, coefficients of variation, skewness, andkurtosis, entropy, Fisher information matrix are studied. Estimates of the model parameters via method of maximum likelihood (ML), and method of moments (MOM) are presented for complete and censored data. Numerical examples are also presented.
