Speculative Fiction And Speculative Ethics: Society, Science Fiction, And The Thomas Theorem, Daniel O. Missroon
Speculative Fiction And Speculative Ethics: Society, Science Fiction, And The Thomas Theorem, Daniel O. Missroon
Honors College Theses
The Thomas Theorem suggests that Speculative Fiction creates possible futures that motivate contemporary individuals to create those futures. This work explores the futures created and denied in three SF texts by modern masters Ursula K. Le Guin, William Gibson, and Dan Simmons.

Fractional Matching Preclusion For Butterfly Derived Networks, Xia Wang, Tianlong Ma, Chengfu Ye, Yuzhi Xiao, Fang Wang
Fractional Matching Preclusion For Butterfly Derived Networks, Xia Wang, Tianlong Ma, Chengfu Ye, Yuzhi Xiao, Fang Wang
Theory & Applications of Graphs
The matching preclusion number of a graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a graph that has neither perfect matchings nor almost perfect matchings. As a generalization, Liu and Liu [18] recently introduced the concept of fractional matching preclusion number. The fractional matching preclusion number (FMP number) of G, denoted by fmp(G), is the minimum number of edges whose deletion leaves the resulting graph without a fractional perfect matching. The fractional strong matching preclusion number (FSMP number) of G, denoted by fsmp(G), is the minimum number of vertices and edges whose deletion …
Quartic Metamaterials: The Inverse Method, Perturbations, And Bulk Optical Neutrality, Thomas Mulkey
Quartic Metamaterials: The Inverse Method, Perturbations, And Bulk Optical Neutrality, Thomas Mulkey
Honors College Theses
A primary goal of photonics is designing material structures that support predetermined electromagnetic field distributions. We have developed an inverse method to determine material parameters for a quartic metamaterial from six desired plane waves. This work inspired us to study how perturbations to the parameters can result in optical neutrality.
Automation In Graphic Design, Robert M. Doehling
Automation In Graphic Design, Robert M. Doehling
Honors College Theses
Advances in technology have had dramatic impacts throughout history on a myriad of industries outside of the technology industry itself. These changes are showcased through a brief examination of the changes within the graphic design industry since the recorded birth of the graphic. With the advent of popularized artificial intelligence seen in the modern day, many are predicting the end of graphic design. Through an analysis of current automated design products within the consumer market and a dive into the research alongside design automation professional Peter O’Donovan, it is evident that the role of the graphic designer will most likely …

Patterns, Symmetries, And Mathematical Structures In The Arts, Sarah C. Deloach
Patterns, Symmetries, And Mathematical Structures In The Arts, Sarah C. Deloach
Honors College Theses
Mathematics is a discipline of academia that can be found everywhere in the world around us. Mathematicians and scientists are not the only people who need to be proficient in numbers. Those involved in social sciences and even the arts can benefit from a background in math. In fact, connections between mathematics and various forms of art have been discovered since as early as the fourth century BC. In this thesis we will study such connections and related concepts in mathematics, dances, and music.

Input And Output: Using Lego Robots To Understand Functions, Shelli L. Casler-Failing
Input And Output: Using Lego Robots To Understand Functions, Shelli L. Casler-Failing
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
This presentation will allow participants to become middle school mathematics students as they use a LEGO robot to collect data in order to determine “the function.” A classroom lesson will be conducted (with the participants playing the role of the student) to show how LEGO robots can be an engaging tool to create collaboration among students as well as support the understanding of concepts. Participants will work in groups of 2-3 to develop a table of input and output data, which will then be used to determine the function represented by the data. This presentation will culminate with a discussion …
An Investigation Into Persistence And Nonpersistence Of Second And Third Year Engineering Students, Kimberly E. Ball
An Investigation Into Persistence And Nonpersistence Of Second And Third Year Engineering Students, Kimberly E. Ball
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
Persistence rates are low for engineering students across the United States with less than 40% graduating. Currently, China is producing ten engineers for each one the US graduates. The US must produce more engineers in the coming years to be competitive in a global economy. Approximately 30% of engineering students do not persist past their first year and this phenomenon has been studied in great depth. However, there are very few studies which examine reasons engineering students either persist or do not persist during their second and third years. Based upon Tinto’s Model of Student Retention, quantitative and qualitative reasons …

Teaching Technical Writing To Engineering Students: Design, Implementation, And Assessment For Project-Based Instruction, Yang Gao
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
This study, through the perspective of project-based instruction (PBI), designed, implemented, and then assessed a technical writing course for engineering students. The study first analyzed the existing literature by addressing current challenges in technical writing to students in engineering majors and why PBI is a fit and effective pedagogy in teaching technical writing to engineering students. It then introduced the design of a semester-based technical writing course and a specific timeline, writing tasks, and projects that had been involved in the course. The study then described specific tasks through rationales behind each task and connections among tasks. Different from the …
Using Math Acceleration To Address Deficiencies Of Stem Students, Jesse W. Kiefner
Using Math Acceleration To Address Deficiencies Of Stem Students, Jesse W. Kiefner
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) developed the Accelerated Mathematics Program (AMP) in 2009 to address student deficiencies in mathematics. At CCBC, approximately 70% of incoming students are not college-ready and must complete developmental coursework in English, reading, or math. AMP allows students to register concurrently for consecutive math courses, allowing students to complete math coursework in half the time. STEM students with developmental math needs have the most to gain; completion, retention, and engagement have increased since implementing this corequisite learning model! Attendees, primarily from the higher education environment, will learn about the nuts-and-bolts of this model, best …
Developing Essential Learning And Study Skills Among Students In Stem Courses At Higher Education Institutions, Charles H. Roberts Dr.
Developing Essential Learning And Study Skills Among Students In Stem Courses At Higher Education Institutions, Charles H. Roberts Dr.
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
To prepare students for success in STEM courses it is often necessary to implement measures that assist them with the development of necessary concomitant learning and study skills. Fully engaging students in performance enhancing problem solving activities that promote the sound development of essential critical thinking and logical reasoning skills/abilities is a must. Getting them to incorporate a myriad of high impact learning and study strategies into their daily routines is equally urgent In this session a tried and effective method of accomplishing those objectives is explored and illustrated. Furthermore, post-secondary STEM instructors will be engaged in a cooperative learning …
