Pre-Service Stem Teachers’ Views Of Teaching Before And After Their First Lesson, Sarah Ferguson, Latanya Sutphin
Pre-Service Stem Teachers’ Views Of Teaching Before And After Their First Lesson, Sarah Ferguson, Latanya Sutphin
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Evaluating comments from pre-service STEM teachers before and after their first teaching experience, this study examines changes in pre-service STEM teachers’ viewpoints regarding the most challenging aspect of teaching and the most important traits of a teacher. Pre-service STEM teachers were asked the same survey questions on the first and last days of their initial introduction to STEM education course. Through this course, students partook in their first opportunity to plan and teach a lesson. Findings suggest student’s initially reviewed teaching from an extrinsically observable vantage point before moving to a more intrinsic reflection point after their first teaching experience.

Enhancing Academic Self-Efficacy And Performance Among Fourth Year Psychology Students: Findings From A Short Educational Intervention, Alexis R. Foulstone, Adrian Kelly
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Academic self-efficacy is the degree to which students believe they are capable of learning or accomplishing an academic task within a specific area of education. High academic self-efficacy has been associated with positive education outcomes such as enhanced learning, motivation, self-determination, and ultimately academic performance. The current study designed, implemented and evaluated an educational intervention to enhance the academic self-efficacy and performance of 21 psychology students enrolled in a group supervised Honours course, the outcome being a thesis dissertation. Students completed pre-intervention surveys in class half way through the course and then another survey after the 8-week intervention. Measures of …

Exploration Using Without-Replacement Sampling Of Actions Is Sometimes Inferior, Stephen W. Carden, S. Dalton Walker
Exploration Using Without-Replacement Sampling Of Actions Is Sometimes Inferior, Stephen W. Carden, S. Dalton Walker
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In many statistical and machine learning applications, without-replacement sampling is considered superior to with-replacement sampling. In some cases, this has been proven, and in others the heuristic is so intuitively attractive that it is taken for granted. In reinforcement learning, many count-based exploration strategies are justified by reliance on the aforementioned heuristic. This paper will detail the non-intuitive discovery that when measuring the goodness of an exploration strategy by the stochastic shortest path to a goal state, there is a class of processes for which an action selection strategy based on without-replacement sampling of actions can be worse than with-replacement …

Maximum Oriented Forcing Number For Complete Graphs, Yair Caro, Ryan Pepper
Maximum Oriented Forcing Number For Complete Graphs, Yair Caro, Ryan Pepper
Theory & Applications of Graphs
The maximum oriented k-forcing number of a simple graph G, written MOFk(G), is the maximum directed k-forcing number among all orientations of G. This invariant was recently introduced by Caro, Davila and Pepper in [6], and in the current paper we study the special case where G is the complete graph with order n, denoted Kn . While MOFk(G) is an invariant for the underlying simple graph G, MOFk(Kn) can also be interpreted as an interesting property for tournaments. Our main results …
Caspases And Cancer: Connections Through Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy, Sarah M. Hethcox
Caspases And Cancer: Connections Through Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy, Sarah M. Hethcox
Honors College Theses
While excessive cell death inevitably leads to negative effects, the endurance of damaged cells in the presence of death signals can be equally detrimental to health. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a highly regulated process in which cues from within or from outside a cell can trigger an irreversible sequence of signals that carry out cell destruction known as the apoptotic cascade. A group of enzymes called caspases play a vital role in this cascade with some participating as initiators and others acting as effectors of protein cleavage and intracellular breakdown. Although it is normal for the activity of …

Matching Preclusion Of The Generalized Petersen Graph, Ajay Arora, Eddie Cheng, Christopher Melekian
Theory & Applications of Graphs
The matching preclusion number of a graph with an even number of vertices is the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a graph with no perfect matchings. In this paper we determine the matching preclusion number for the generalized Petersen graph P(n,k) and classify the optimal sets.

The Dynamic Integration Of Content And Language During Bilingual Discussion Of Mathematics Word Problems, Alandeom W. Oliveira, Carla Meskill, Karen Gregory, Patterson Rogers, Shelli L. Casler-Failing
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
This study explores the discourse strategies adopted by a bilingual tutor to integrate content and second language learning, and support a student with limited English proficiency while discussing a set of word problems. Our findings reveal an integrated curriculum space wherein instructional focus oscillates between language and content. Pedagogical scaffolding was accomplished through strategic interspersing of pedagogical supports characterised by a linguistic focus (attention to words exchanged) or an epistemic focus (attention on mathematical ideas). Central to linguistically focused strategies was the deployment of oral translation techniques (literal translation, borrowing, modulation, and equivalence). By contrast, epistemically focused strategies entailed metaphorical …

Series-Parallel Operations With Alpha-Graphs, Christian Barrientos, Sarah Minion
Series-Parallel Operations With Alpha-Graphs, Christian Barrientos, Sarah Minion
Theory & Applications of Graphs
Among difference vertex labelings of graphs, α-labelings are the most restrictive one. A graph is an α-graph if it admits an α-labeling. In this work, we study a new alternative to construct α-graphs using, the well-known, series-parallel operations on smaller α-graphs. As an application of the series operation, we show that all members of a subfamily of all trees with maximum degree 4, obtained using vertex amalgamation of copies of the path Ρ11}, are α-graphs. We also show that the one-point union of up to four copies of Κn,n is an …

Innovation In Preservice Teacher Preparation: Undergraduate Research In Special Education, Kymberly Harris, Meca Williams-Johnson, Dana Sparkman
Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications
Teacher preparation programs emphasize the connection between student outcomes in achievement and behavior, but the framework of teachers as researchers is rarely presented as a foundational basis of good instruction. Teachers are aware of the need to consider scores and trends and alter their instruction based on the response of the students to their teaching, but the techniques involved are not explicitly taught as research methods in most preparation programs.
The initial purpose of including a research course in the undergraduate program of study was to provide preservice teachers with research skills to enhance their instruction. The long term goal …

Assessment Of Oxidative Stress In The Livers Of Rats Exposed To 2-Aminoanthracene For Twelve Weeks, John C. Stagg
Assessment Of Oxidative Stress In The Livers Of Rats Exposed To 2-Aminoanthracene For Twelve Weeks, John C. Stagg
Honors College Theses
Diabetes is a chronic illness that affects many people, and it’s thought that environmental exposure to certain compounds may increase its proliferation. In this study, we examine the dietary effects of 2-aminoanthracene (2AA), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), in rats, specifically as it relates to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress refers to the imbalance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants in living systems; it has been shown to contribute to type-1 diabetes. To accomplish the study objectives rats were divided into three dietary treatment groups, control (0 mg/kg-2AA), low dose (50 mg/kg-2AA) and high dose (100 mg/kg-2AA). Rats were fed …

End-To-End Learning: Using Neural Networks For Vehicle Control And Obstacle Avoidance, Keith Russell
End-To-End Learning: Using Neural Networks For Vehicle Control And Obstacle Avoidance, Keith Russell
Honors College Theses
End to End learning is a method of deep learning which has been used to great effect to solve complex problems which would normally be performed by humans. Within this thesis, a neural network was created to mimic the steering patterns of humans in highway driving situations. A Turtlebot was used in place of a car and was tested within a laboratory on a closed loop track to drive within the lanes created for it. The network architecture was based on that of Nvidia’s model which was used for predicting steering angles of a vehicle. The network was successfully trained …
