Exchange-Coupling Behavior In Srfe12o19/La0.7sr0.3mno3 Nanocomposites, Jiba Nath Dahal, Dipesh Neupane, Sanjay R. Mishra
Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
Magnetically hard-soft (100-x) SrFe12O19–x wt % La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanocomposites were synthesized via a one-pot auto-combustion technique using nitrate salts followed by heat treatment in air at 950 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were used to characterize the structural and magnetic properties of the samples. XRD spectra revealed the formation of a mixture of ferrite and magnetite phases without any trace of secondary phases in the composite. Microstructural images show the proximity grain growth of both phases. The room temperature hysteresis loops of the samples showed the presence of exchange-coupling between the hard and …

Singular Ramsey And Turán Numbers, Yair Caro, Zsolt Tuza
Singular Ramsey And Turán Numbers, Yair Caro, Zsolt Tuza
Theory & Applications of Graphs
We say that a subgraph F of a graph G is singular if the degrees dG(v) are all equal or all distinct for the vertices v ∈ V (F). The singular Ramsey number Rs(F) is the smallest positive integer n such that, for every m at least n, in every edge 2-coloring of Km, at least one of the color classes contains F as a singular subgraph. In a similar flavor, the singular Turán number Ts(n,F) is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph of order n, …

Secondary Science And Mathematics Teachers’ Environmental Issues Engagement Through Socioscientific Reasoning, David C. Owens, Benjamin C. Herman, Robert T. Oertli, Amy A. Lannin, Troy D. Sadler
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
Among the many responsibilities of K-12 educators is to promote the development of environmental literacy among their students. Contentious environmental issues are often considered socioscientific issues (SSI; e.g., climate change) in that they are rooted in science, but a myriad of non-scientific (e.g., cultural, political, economic, etc.) factors must be addressed if those issues are to be successfully resolved. Teachers often report being ill-equipped to address these non-scientific factors, which may be due to struggles with employing socioscientific reasoning (SSR). SSR includes understanding the complexity of SSI, engaging in perspective-taking and ongoing inquiry about SSI, employing skepticism when dealing with …

Teaching Technical Communication To Engineering Students: Design, Implementation, And Assessment For Project-Based Instruction, Yang Gao
Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)
Through the project-based instruction (PBI) method, this paper described the design, implementation, and assessment of a technical communication course for engineering graduate students. The paper first addressed an increasing demand of engineering students with great communication skills through analyzing the existing literature and industry criteria. It then introduced concepts and characteristics of PBI and explained why PBI is a fit pedagogy in teaching technical writing to engineering students. Next, it elaborated components involved in the holistic design of the PBI course, including student sample, timeline, designed sections and units, and designing rationale and principles. This paper then reported the teaching …

Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders Who Participate In First Robotics, Karin M. Fisher, Benjamin Gallegos, Taylor Bousfield
Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)
One of the challenges of educating adolescents with autism spectrum disorders is to find activities that are interesting and engaging. Researchers have shown that adolescents with autism often are attracted to technology. Using an exploratory research method, the experiences of three students with autism who participated in after school robotics clubs were analyzed. Common themes to emerge were the students with ASD were engaged and interested in FIRST robotics and technology. Specifically, they enjoyed coming up with ideas, inventions, and creating or solving missions. Their confidence increased and they learned to work better on teams. Additionally, they needed significant supports …

Letters From A Gifted Educator In Georgia, Heather Holley
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is a collection of letters from me as I explored the significance of the current standardized curriculum milieu on gifted learners’ educative opportunities in a public elementary school. The inquiry drew information of gifted learners’ characteristics and educative, affective, and social needs from the works of Gagné (Gagné, 1985, 2000, 2005), Renzulli and Renzulli & Reis (Reis & Renzulli, 1997, 2010; Renzulli, 1986, 2012; Renzulli & Reis, 1997). I also drew from Gallagher (2000, 2003, 2004, 205, 2015) and Sapon-Shevin (1996, 2003) for information on the political implications of gifted education. The study employed currere(Pinar & Grumet, …

Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Among People With Cardiovascular Diseases In Southeast Georgia, Chimuanya Okoli, Stacy Carswell, Sewuese Akuse, Kelly L. Sullivan
Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States. Proper treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease is essential and can be challenged by non-disclosed use of complementary or alternative treatments. The objective of this study was to assess which demographics were associated with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use and if education affects the use of CAM.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among a stratified random sample of residents of Southeastern Georgia. Sampling was stratified by urban/rural residence in order to reach sufficient rural residents. Participants that indicated they had been diagnosed with hypertension or …
"A Dark, Abiding, Signing Africanist Presence" In Walker Percy’S Dr. Tom More Novels, David Withun
"A Dark, Abiding, Signing Africanist Presence" In Walker Percy’S Dr. Tom More Novels, David Withun
The Coastal Review
Many of the tropes, commonplaces, symbols, and values used and reflected by American literary works written by white authors, as Toni Morrison writes, are “in fact responses to a dark, abiding, signing Africanist presence.” The black/white racial binary and racial différance that mark this presence inform the use of racialized characters as signifiers in the novels of Walker Percy. In the Dr. Tom More novels Love in the Ruins and The Thanatos Syndrome, Percy adopts racial symbolism as a means toward his critique of the American notion of “the pursuit of happiness.” In Love in the Ruins, Percy …
Dynamics Of Business Decision Making: Understanding The Role Of Emotions, Nikolina Koporcic, Miika Nietola
Dynamics Of Business Decision Making: Understanding The Role Of Emotions, Nikolina Koporcic, Miika Nietola
AMTP Proceedings 2019
In recent years, there has been a need for deeper understanding of the cumulating knowledge in different science disciplines about human emotions in decision making. Indeed, many traditional economic theories operate with the preconception of utility maximization, which partly contradicts with the recent findings in behavioral economics and neurosciences. In other words, science has shown that we can make suboptimal business decisions under the influence of changing emotional states. Moreover, traditional economic literature has often highlighted the strict division between rational decision making and the effective dimensions of the human mind. This conceptual article therefore challenges these conceptions by exploring …

State Of Stem: Defining The Landscape To Determine High-Impact Pathways For The Future Workforce, Erin White, Ariana F. Shakibnia
Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)
This article attempts to address the workforce crisis with implications for economic competitiveness and national defense faced by America and the dichotomy of STEM needs and available employees. Businesses struggle to fill critical skilled roles in STEM occupations and thus suffer sluggish growth. In fact, some estimate up to 2.4 million STEM jobs go unfilled College graduates in STEM fields struggle to find jobs. STEM jobs have doubled as a proportion of all jobs since the industrial revolution. New jobs and entirely new fields are being created daily. Estimates suggest that 65 percent of children entering elementary school today will …
The Impact Of Grade Level Flexible Grouping On Math Achievement Scores, Heather Mckeen
The Impact Of Grade Level Flexible Grouping On Math Achievement Scores, Heather Mckeen
Georgia Educational Researcher
Abstract
Flexible grouping aims to divide students into groups according to their strengths and abilities. This will allow teachers to tailor instruction to meet the needs of students, allowing them to thrive within their current environments. Quantitative research was used to investigate whether flexible grouping had a positive effect on student achievement as measured by the mathematics section of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The aggregate scores of students in grades 1 to 4 in a school in a county in Georgia were compared for periods before and after the implementation of flexible grouping. The following study was able to …
Teaching Hidden History: A Case Study Of Dialogic Scaffolding In A Hybrid Graduate Course, Amy K. Swan, Nathan M. Sleeter, Kelly Schrum
Teaching Hidden History: A Case Study Of Dialogic Scaffolding In A Hybrid Graduate Course, Amy K. Swan, Nathan M. Sleeter, Kelly Schrum
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Using an expanded version of Alexander’s (2008) theory of dialogic teaching developed by Rojas-Drummond, Torreblanca, Pedraza, Vélez, and Guzmán (2013), this case study explored how instructors and students in a hybrid graduate course engaged in the process of dialogic teaching and learning (DTL). In particular, we examined the ways in which scaffolding strategies used in the course supported inquiry-based learning. Our findings suggest that instructors and students engaged in all five dimensions of DTL as defined by Rojas-Drummond et al. (2013), and illuminate the ways in which scaffolding can facilitate inquiry-based learning in interdisciplinary instructional settings.

Stabilize Chaotic Flows In A Coupled Triple-Loop Thermosyphon System, Haley N. Anderson
Stabilize Chaotic Flows In A Coupled Triple-Loop Thermosyphon System, Haley N. Anderson
Honors College Theses
This study addresses the control of chaotic dynamic systems represented by three coupled Lorenz systems. In application, Lorenz systems are commonly used to describe the one-dimensional motion of fluids in a tube when heated below and cooled above. This system, in particular, reflects the fluid motion in a coupled triple-loop thermosyphon system. The goal is to derive a system of nonlinear differential equations to help us study various flow patterns governed by such a high-dimensional nonlinear model numerically. Once the driving parameter (Rayleigh number) values are identified corresponding to the chaotic regime, a minimal number of proportional controllers are designed …

Fostering Students' Civic Skills: Education For Sustainable Democracy, Atakan Ata
Fostering Students' Civic Skills: Education For Sustainable Democracy, Atakan Ata
Georgia Educational Researcher
This qualitative study explored factors that supported teachers in their efforts to promote students’ critiquing, communicating, and collaborating skills. Despite the various challenges that public schools face today, they are most likely the very institutions to play a critical role in individuals’ civic skills development. Individual in-depth interviews were the primary method used to understand the participants’ perspectives on instruction and the factors that foster students’ civic skills. Factors that supported the participants in their efforts to promote civic skills among their students were found to be teacher collaboration, planning, and teacher motivation. Details and the implications of the findings …
