"I Probably Wouldn't Be As Happy": Childhood Parental Separation And Posttraumatic Growth Narratives From Eight College Students, Meagan C. Arrastia-Chisholm, Hoa Nguyen, Africa Pippin, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D. Sep 2025

"I Probably Wouldn't Be As Happy": Childhood Parental Separation And Posttraumatic Growth Narratives From Eight College Students, Meagan C. Arrastia-Chisholm, Hoa Nguyen, Africa Pippin, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D.

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

Parental separation during childhood leads to long-lasting psychological and socioemotional impact on the lives of emerging adults as they transition into higher education. The long-term effects of childhood parental separation on college students' academic performance, physical health, and overall mental wellbeing are well-documented. However, students can develop resilience to cope with challenging family and life experiences and even demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes and experiences college students discover after enduring life disruptions, such as being separated from their parents at an early age. To better understand the connection between parental separation and posttraumatic growth, a …

Skolem Number Of Kagome Lattice Graphs, Braxton Carrigan, Max Martone Aug 2025

Skolem Number Of Kagome Lattice Graphs, Braxton Carrigan, Max Martone

Theory & Applications of Graphs

A proper Skolem labelling of a graph $G$ is a function assigning a positive integer to each vertex of $G$ such that any two vertices assigned the same integer are that distance apart in the graph. The Skolem number of a graph is smallest number $n$ such that there exists a proper Skolem labelling only using the positive integers less than or equal to $n$. In this paper, we will begin by proving the Skolem number for another family of subgraphs of the hexagonal lattice and then prove the Skolem number for two families of subgraphs of the Kagome Lattice.

Examining The Relationship Between Discriminated Medical Care And Telehealth Use In The United States, Jennifer E. Akpo, Samuel Opoku, Bettye A. Apenteng, William A. Mase Jul 2025

Examining The Relationship Between Discriminated Medical Care And Telehealth Use In The United States, Jennifer E. Akpo, Samuel Opoku, Bettye A. Apenteng, William A. Mase

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Discrimination in healthcare can lead to reduced trust in the system and reluctance to seek care. Telehealth and other digital health technologies may have the potential to reduce inequality and bias within the healthcare system since the virtual space may minimize the implicit social and cultural biases that can influence face-to-face interactions in the traditional in-person healthcare delivery settings. However, amidst a growing body of literature on how different racial and ethnic groups use telehealth services, the extent to which discrimination in medical care drives the use of telehealth in the United States has remained largely uncharacterized. We aimed …

Exploring The Impact Of A Middle Level School Therapy Dog On Students And Staff And Connections To Best Practices In Middle School Education, Brandye Nobiling, Sherry Maykrantz, Tara Downes, Joshua Nobiling Jul 2025

Exploring The Impact Of A Middle Level School Therapy Dog On Students And Staff And Connections To Best Practices In Middle School Education, Brandye Nobiling, Sherry Maykrantz, Tara Downes, Joshua Nobiling

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

The presence of therapy dogs in schools has increased due to the growing body of research showing positive effects of assisted-animal interaction. But there is little published research on how an innovation such as a therapy dog connects to best practices in middle level education. The goal of the research was to use the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory to connect the implementation of a therapy dog to the Association for Middle Level Education’s (AMLE) essential attributes and characteristics as well as components of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. Focus …

Building Community With Middle Level Preservice Teachers, Carolyn A. Weber

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

This paper addresses how community building can be implemented in a class for preservice middle level teachers. The preservice teachers connected community building to their success in the course and reported ways they could build community in their future classrooms.

Using Text Clusters To Support Student Imagining, Wondering, Questioning, And Discovering, William P. Bintz Jul 2025

Using Text Clusters To Support Student Imagining, Wondering, Questioning, And Discovering, William P. Bintz

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

This article describes an unexpected playground experience that occurred between the author, a reading educator and former middle grades teacher, and his six-year-old granddaughter. The experience became the inspiration and impetus to provide an introduction to, and a rationale for, the concept of text clusters to middle grades teachers. The concept of developing and implementing text clusters in the classroom is driven by inquiry and based on one question: How can middle school teachers develop and implement text clusters to help their students actively engage in imagining, wondering, questioning, and discovering? It shares and illustrates examples of text clusters. It …

From Observation To Ethical Inquiry: Course Redesign In Middle Level Educator Preparation, Sarah Straub, Elizabeth Gound Jul 2025

From Observation To Ethical Inquiry: Course Redesign In Middle Level Educator Preparation, Sarah Straub, Elizabeth Gound

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

This manuscript explores the transformative impact of ethical engagement in the course MLGE 3301: Adolescent Learning, designed for pre-field students in an educator preparation program. Focused on middle-grade education and special education, this course incorporates a significant service learning component, with undergraduate students spending 10 service hours in middle school classrooms and conducting interviews with middle school students. The purpose of the interviews is to enable pre-field students to engage with middle school students and use the insights gained to reflect on the alignment between their coursework in adolescent learning theory and real-world experiences. Two professors leading the course recognized …
