An Analysis Of Long-Term Effects Of Climate Change And Socioeconomic Activities On Grassland Productivity Of Inner Mongolia, Siyu Fan
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In recent years, researchers have recognized the complexity of the interactions between the ecological system and the economic development of human society. However, the complicated relationships overwhelm traditional statistical procedures and require an innovative approach to investigate their dynamics. We proposed this study to provide a unique perspective in analyzing the long-term causal relationships between the grassland productivity, climate change, and socioeconomic development of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) of China. Our attempt began with acquiring remotely sensed satellite imagery, climatic variations, and aggregated annual reports of the socio-economy of the IMAR in vegetation growing seasons for 15 years. The …
Analysis Of Volcanic Ash, Conor O'Dowd
Analysis Of Volcanic Ash, Conor O'Dowd
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Volcanic ash begins to weather upon deposition, resulting in the in situ development of clay minerals in the glass pore spaces. Almquist (2011) established a classification scheme of weathering based on ash deposits in New Zealand using an SEM. We are examining volcanic ash collected from Mount St. Helens, New Zealand, and Cobble Cuesta of the Gabbs Valley Basin to broaden the classification scheme based on morphology and authigenic clay mineral composition. SEM and XRD analysis of the material were used to get a better understanding of the morphology and geochemistry of the weathering products. By broadening the weathering classification …
Beyond Shelby County, Anthony Gonzalez
Beyond Shelby County, Anthony Gonzalez
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In the aftermath of the 2016 elections there is ample data to examine trends in voter turnout across the states. This election cycle also provided the first national election in fifty years without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Previously covered states and jurisdictions were no longer required to obtain preclearance in the enactment of voting legislation. This thesis will seek to answer which interest was being served by the new voting laws in several states and whether the gutting of the Voting Rights Act by the U.S. Supreme Court had an impact on voter turnout. It …

Female Student Veterans' Resiliency In Their Role Transitions, Michael Dennis Parise
Female Student Veterans' Resiliency In Their Role Transitions, Michael Dennis Parise
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined female student veterans as they pertain to Schlossberg's Theory of Transition (1981), which asserts that many life events influence one’s ability to adapt when transitioning from one role to another in a linear fashion. The results of this study reveal that the participants viewed change not as a transition, but that they faced conflict from competing roles and stressors. Their attainment of their goals resulted from their ability to be resilient.
An Examination Of The Effects Of School Choice On The Financial Integrity And Demographic Mix Of Traditional Public Schools, Jacqueline Abbey Johnston
An Examination Of The Effects Of School Choice On The Financial Integrity And Demographic Mix Of Traditional Public Schools, Jacqueline Abbey Johnston
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to study how the controversial yet expanding use of school choice affects traditional public schools' finances and socioeconomic and racial/ethnic student demographics. This mixed-methods study analyzed traditional public school districts in two Michigan counties in 2009/10 and 2013/14, answering three research questions: 1) Are the finances in districts with greater concentrations of student poverty and diversity more affected by choice than districts with lesser concentrations of student poverty and diversity? 2) Is there a relationship between choice impact and the socioeconomic and racial/ethnic concentration of student populations? and 3) What are superintendents' perceptions of …

What Are The Barriers Affecting Accessibility Of Dietetic Internships?, Samantha Moelter
What Are The Barriers Affecting Accessibility Of Dietetic Internships?, Samantha Moelter
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Objective: To explore the disparity between number of students completing degrees in dietetics, students matched to internships, and current and projected field needs. Methods: An electronic survey covering a variety of factors potentially affecting internship accessibility was distributed to 251 internship program directors, 200 preceptors, and accreditation board, staff, and review members. Results: Of 193 total respondents, 60% agreed that accreditation competencies prepared dietetic interns well and that internship costs may hinder diversity among interns. Seventy-two percent of program directors (n=115) reported difficulties in preceptor recruitment and 56% reported difficulties in preceptor training/orientation. Conclusion: The overarching goal of ACEND®, dietetic …

Ann Arbor And The Ann Arbor Public Schools: A Cultural Geography, Lisa R. Anglin
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the persisting disparity in academic achievement between Caucasian and African American students within the Ann Arbor Public School District. This research analyzed the historical and geographical evolution of the city of Ann Arbor, specific to the organization of its public schools. This study sought to define the dominant cultural groups of Ann Arbor, how they evolved, as well as how they migrated to the region. In addition, a critical component of this study was to explain the relationship between the cultural geography of Ann Arbor and structure of the school organization, which …

French Proficiency At The Secondary And Post-Secondary Levels, Kirsten Wienckowski
French Proficiency At The Secondary And Post-Secondary Levels, Kirsten Wienckowski
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
As a general rule, It is claimed that the four years of foreign language courses taken In high school are equivalent to the first four semesters of foreign courses taken at the university level. In fact, most universities grant college credit for scoring well on the foreign language Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams taken by students following the completion of thelr study of a foreign language In high school. This claim prompts an exploration of proficiency levels achieved by students studying French at the secondary and post-secondary levels through evaluations of the French AP, 18, College Level …
