The Effect Of Mild Cognitive Impairment On Anxiety In Older Adults In American And Ukraine, Eleanor Ryan
The Effect Of Mild Cognitive Impairment On Anxiety In Older Adults In American And Ukraine, Eleanor Ryan
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
With the growing population of elderly individuals throughout the world, the study of their emotional distress is ever poignant to society. This is especially true when these individuals have cognitive impairment. The research, in regards to Eastern European individuals, is lacking. To gain a better understanding of this understudied population, elderly people with Mild Cognitive impairment (MCI) from both Ukraine and the United States were studied. It was found that the anxiety rates of the Ukrainian MCI group were significantly higher than both the United States MCI group and the Ukraine control (p = 0.004). Purpose The purpose of this …

Gis Analysis Of The Mid-Nineteenth Century Emigration Of The Old Lutherans From Prussia, Joel Seewald
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The Old Lutherans constituted fewer than 20% of the Germans who emigrated from Prussia between 1835 and 1854. In this study, more than 483 cities and villages of origin of 6,911 Old Lutherans were mapped. These origins were in the central provinces of Brandenburg, Pomerania, Posen, Saxony, and Silesia. More emigrants came from Pomerania overall and during every time period except 1849-54. The areas with the most emigrants were north central Pomerania, northern Brandenburg, southeast Brandenburg, and western Silesia. Emigrant destinations were primarily America and Australia. American destinations included New York, Wisconsin, and Texas, but the state that many went …

Preparing For Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrests (Ohca) In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A Gis Scenario-Modeling Approach, Abubakr Abdelkafi Magzoub
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study employed location-allocation modeling and a geographic information system (GIS) to study the current placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in relationship to neighborhoods in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, and to determine the optimal locations for additional AEDs in the city. Using GIS to mathematically locate additional healthcare facilities for the placement of AEDs is more reliable than to select them using informed guesses. The objective of this research was to elaborate a mathematical and GIS model for placing AED devices so that people who need to use these devices in the City of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, can access …
A Case Study Of High School Students Affected By School Closure, Elizabeth Wolkowicz
A Case Study Of High School Students Affected By School Closure, Elizabeth Wolkowicz
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Recent charter school closures in a Southeastern Michigan community have created an influx of displaced students from communities where families are not provided systematic support to make the unexpected transition. The study utilized focus group and individual interviews to collect data from high school students who have experienced their charter high school closing and have transitioned into a single charter high school. Data analyses were done concurrently with data collection, and the first- and second-level codes were presented in matrix displays. Four themes emerged from the interviews of these participants. These themes were: sense of belonging, fear of the unknown, …
Writing Across The Curriculum: Integrating Writing Into Daily Elementary Math, Science, And Social Studies Lessons, Emily Lundh
Writing Across The Curriculum: Integrating Writing Into Daily Elementary Math, Science, And Social Studies Lessons, Emily Lundh
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
There is a significant lack of time spent writing with students in the primary grades, namely writing informationally. By using research done by experts in the fields of writing and literature in the elementary grades I have created lessons that integrate informational writing into the daily lessons in math, science, and social studies in first, third, and fifth grades. These lessons are individual, pair, and small group plans that can be completed in just one day or a few days where students are engaging with the content in a different way.

Collaboration Across The Curriculum: Urban Planning & Public Health, Lula Geyre
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The way our communities are designed impacts our health. and there is an increasing need for collaboration between urban planners and public health professionals. Yet, it is not clear to what extent universities are preparing public health and planning students to work together. Our research will shed light on this important topic by evaluating the course requirements for both of these disciplines in accredited institutions and look at how they are addressing interprofessional issues such as land development, transportation policies, air/water quality, and community growth issues. The current study explores the availability of interdisciplinary courses in accredited undergraduate and graduate …

Sculpted From Clay, Shaped By Power: Feminine Narrative And Agency In Wonder Woman, Mikala Carpenter
Sculpted From Clay, Shaped By Power: Feminine Narrative And Agency In Wonder Woman, Mikala Carpenter
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
By applying deconstructive and feminist theories to the Wonder Woman saga, this thesis develops a potential definition of feminine narrative in contrast to the normative and exclusionary patriarchal narrative that reigns supreme in popular culture and Western ideology. Though much of comics discourse functions on the assumption that superhero narratives are homogenous reflections of this ideological hero narrative, I posit that the Amazonian princess's resilience and iconicity stem from her own narrative's uniquely deconstructive nature: Where the patriarchal story would demand dominance, destruction, and violence, the feminine narrative that Diana models advocates for equality, nurturance, and emotional and rational communication. …

Development Of A Gis Database Of Incomplete Forensic Anthropology Cases In Southeastern Michigan, Casey Butler
Development Of A Gis Database Of Incomplete Forensic Anthropology Cases In Southeastern Michigan, Casey Butler
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
With many forensic anthropology cases of human skeletal remains, the skeletons may be incomplete for a variety of reasons, such as: animal scavenging, acid bone diagenesis, fluvial transport, among other factors. There are many studies that address these taphonomic factors; however, prior research fails to examine different methods in tracking incomplete forensic anthropology cases. This study investigates different geographic information system (GIS) methods applied to the forensic sciences to determine the best software to track forensic anthropology cases using a spatial mapping system to record and track 15 incomplete cases from Southeastern Michigan. The final ArcGIS tool developed here notes …

Student Involvement: A Comparative Study Of Eastern Michigan University And Oxford-Brookes University, Meaghan Lynch
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Through a comparative analysis of Eastern Michigan University and Oxford-Brookes University, it has been determined that despite being similar in size and reputability, student organizations look significantly different. The researcher determined a strong first step in discussing why the two universities have such differing approaches to student involvement would be to investigate the value found in extra-curricular participation for students that occur in both countries. The researcher explored this difference and discusses what each institution could learn from the other and continue to grow and develop their extracurricular programs.

Neighborhood Risk Factors For Obesity In The Detroit, Michigan Latino Community, Ivan E. Lebron
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Latinos, or individuals from the Caribbean, South America, and Central America (Santiago, 1996), are affected by a wide variety of health issues, and in particular, obesity. In the United States alone, more than 40% of Latino adults are obese, and almost 23% of Latino children between the ages of 2 to 19 suffer from obesity (Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2014). Latinos are ranked second behind African Americans in obesity rates in the United States (Ogden et al., 2014). This literature review will examine the historical and socio-economic factors that contribute to the high obesity …
