Insights Into The Processes And Practices Novice Professors Use To Continually Develop Their Pedagogical Skills, Kerri Pilling Burchill
Insights Into The Processes And Practices Novice Professors Use To Continually Develop Their Pedagogical Skills, Kerri Pilling Burchill
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored the processes and practices three novice professors used to develop their pedagogical skills after attending formal professional development activities or programs. Data for the study included transcriptions of two interviews, pedagogical artifacts, and field notes of classroom observations. The data set was analyzed using a combination of systematic coding, thematic analysis, and the development of grounded theory. The study found that participants instinctively developed their pedagogical skills by engaging in a learning cycle that involved preparing to teach, teaching, reflecting on their teaching experiences, developing new pedagogical strategies that enhanced their instructional practice, and implementing …

Historic Preservation Final Projects
The natural beauty of the Garden Peninsula and proximity on the Great Lakes has attracted people to its shores for thousands of years. The peninsula holds many intrinsic qualities: cultural, historic, natural and recreational. The Anishinabeg native peoples historically occupied the peninsula during warm fishing months and established seasonal camps here. The French Missionaries followed in the seventeenth century traveling along the sound between islands in Green Bay and following the Niagara Escarpment northward to the Garden Peninsula. In the nineteenth century, a breakthrough in iron smelting technology aided rapid industrial development across the United States and the peninsula experienced …

Old Leelanau County Jail Initial Conditions Assessment, Megan Blaha
Old Leelanau County Jail Initial Conditions Assessment, Megan Blaha
Historic Preservation Final Projects
In the winter 2015 term, Eastern Michigan University’s Historic Preservation Program partnered with the Leelanau Historical Society to initiate the development of a Conditions Assessment for the historic former Leelanau County Jail, located on land where the county seat had stood prior to its move to Suttons Bay Township in 2008. The purpose of this joint effort was to continue the efforts already begun by the Historical Society to save the jail. Since interest in development of the property the jail currently resides on persists, it has become imperative to create an assessment so that if the jail needs to …

Self-Efficacy And Instructional Leadership: Does Mentoring Make A Difference?, Julie Diane Helber
Self-Efficacy And Instructional Leadership: Does Mentoring Make A Difference?, Julie Diane Helber
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The responsibility of principals has shifted significantly over the past few decades. During 1960s and 1970s school leaders were expected to be organizers and managers of schools and to serve as buffers to the organization to protect a weak technical core. Standards-based reform, beginning in the 1980s, was in direct conflict with this mindset. Instead of protecting a weak technical core, school leaders had to focus on instruction guided by standards and demonstrate alignment to such standards. Today, there is an increased attention on academic achievement and accountability in schools (Leithwood, Jantzi, & Steinbach, 1999). Principals are being held responsible …

Utilizing Geographic Information Systems To Examine The Demographic And Socioeconomic Characteristics In Food Oasis And Food Desert In Wayne County, Mi, Arwa Hassan Almadan
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In the last few decades, the concept of a food desert has captured the attention of the public and academia. Research has referred to food desert as an area with lack of access to adequate healthy food, especially for those without a vehicle or who live more than ¼ mile walking distance from grocery stores. Although the food desert metaphor has been used in research in different disciplines such as regional planning and public health, this term has been used loosely without a precise definition and without identifying the factors that might impact it.
This research explores and examines the …
The Impact Of Proposal A On Two Michigan School Districts, James D. Cooper
The Impact Of Proposal A On Two Michigan School Districts, James D. Cooper
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In 1994 the state of Michigan changed its school finance system. Over a nine-month period between July, 1993, and March, 1994, state legislators and the voters of Michigan acted to change the tax structure and address funding equity for public schools. In the fall of 1994, Michigan’s public schools began operating under an entirely new set of school finance reforms. The primary focus of this research is the articulation of the effects of the 1994 Michigan school funding reform (Proposal A). The purpose of this research was to conduct a policy analysis and impact analysis of Proposal A on two …

Historic Preservation Final Projects
Ted’s House, named after the previous owner, is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan at 826 Vine Place. The house is now owned by the non-profit Old House Network, which is using the house for educational classes on old house repairs. The house is currently in an interior demolition and structural stabilization phase. The roof and porches were replaced in 2012. In the interior, most of the walls have had the plaster or dry wall removed exposing the studs. This report was written as my final project for Master Program in Historic Preservation. I decided to undertake this report because it would …

Beleaguered Resonance: Loyalist Entrenchment And Division In The Early Troubles, 1963–1985, Bradley J. Watkins
Beleaguered Resonance: Loyalist Entrenchment And Division In The Early Troubles, 1963–1985, Bradley J. Watkins
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Taking as a starting point the framework that the Northern Ireland Troubles were largely fought on confessional sectarian, ethno-national grounds, this essay will analyze the internal and external forces that incited Ulster Protestant political responses from the premiership of Terence O’Neill, beginning in 1963, to the 1985 signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement. Through an extrapolation of socioeconomic class dynamics, and geographical imperatives informed by such source material as population demographics, election results, distribution of political violence, as well as numerous Protestant organizational publications, it is clear that throughout the early Troubles Protestant Northern Ireland increasingly undertook strategies of various modes …
Pinching Pennies, Costing Dollars: Michigan's Offender Re-Entry System, Crystal A. Dussia
Pinching Pennies, Costing Dollars: Michigan's Offender Re-Entry System, Crystal A. Dussia
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The current state of incarceration is a burden that every taxpayer bears. Through effective offender re-entry services, the financial, social, and physical burdens such as high crime rates, high recidivism rates, and the high cost of incarceration can be lessened for all citizens. Historical context establishes a foundation to be able to understand the current state of re-entry in Michigan as a small representation of the nation. The financial expenditures, social costs, and lack of evidence of past practice are explored. The content of this thesis is focused on Michigan within a national context of prison re-entry programs, history, and …
New Literacies In Our Global Society: Teaching Literacies Beyond Text, Kristine N. Stewart, Alex Mudd
New Literacies In Our Global Society: Teaching Literacies Beyond Text, Kristine N. Stewart, Alex Mudd
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
In our globalized world, students now have access to a variety of viewpoints in a variety of formats from around the globe. This creates new challenges for students in the evaluation and understanding of information. As a result, it is becoming increasingly more important for our students to understand where their information is coming from and be able to read and interpret the format of this information. This entails having literacies that go beyond text and includes cultural, social, critical, and digital literacies.
This presentation will provide an overview of opportunities to integrate the teaching of new literacies into existing …
Beyond The Checklist: Using Rhetorical Analysis To Evaluate Sources As Social Acts, Joel Burkholder
Beyond The Checklist: Using Rhetorical Analysis To Evaluate Sources As Social Acts, Joel Burkholder
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Rhetorical analysis can transform information literacy instruction. A familiar concept in the study of rhetoric, it illustrates that all messages are deliberate, social acts, constructed by authors to achieve specific purposes and speak to specific audiences. To be effective, authors must make rhetorical choices that suit both the purpose and audience they are addressing.
Under the current paradigm of source evaluation, librarians largely ignore the rhetorical nature of messages, focusing instead on the identification of surface features that indicate high-quality information. This can lead to the impression that messages are inert objects, rather than dynamic, social acts. Forms of communication, …

From Prix Fixe To A La Carte: Using Lesson Study To Collaborate With Faculty In Customizing Information Literacy, Eric Jennings, Hans Kishel, Jill Markgraf
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
The one-shot, prix fixe library instruction session has long been the reality for many information literacy programs. Learn how one library used lesson study, a collaborative process of planning, observing and assessing a single lesson, to put in motion ongoing collaboration with faculty across several disciplines. Through the collaborative process of redesigning a single lesson, librarians and teaching faculty confronted their respective expectations for and challenges in providing library instruction, and ignited the interest of faculty from English, nursing and the sciences. Through work with a variety of faculty, librarians learned that a single instruction model does not work for …

Managerial Use Of Text Messaging In International Organizations, José Guadalupe Torres, Roger Conaway
Managerial Use Of Text Messaging In International Organizations, José Guadalupe Torres, Roger Conaway
Global Advances in Business Communication
When organizational employees adopt and use various communication technologies in the workplace, the process of choosing such media has emerged as a complex one. Numerous variables impact the decisions of employees and managers when they implement these technologies. Our study adapted van den Hooff, Groot, & de Jonge’s (2005) assessment instrument for email usage to text messaging in international companies. Our results reflected similar findings as van den Hooff, Groot, & de Jonge (2005) in most subscales of the instrument. Specifically, we investigated the extent to which managers had used and applied text messaging in organizational settings. We utilized a …
