Progress Towards Uranium Isotope Ratio Measurements Directly From Cotton Swipes With The Liquid Sampling – Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharge (Ls-Apgd) Ionization Source, Joseph V. Goodwin
All Dissertations
The liquid sampling – atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) ionization source is a novel microplasma ionization source capable of ionizing a diverse set of both inorganic and organic chemical species including, ionic metal constituents as well as ligated metallic species, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), halogens, proteins, and even per/poly fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). The ability to generate ions from diverse chemical species, known as combined atomic and molecular (CAM) ionization, is not found with traditional ionization sources. In addition, the LS-APGD is capable of coupling with mass spectrometer platforms typically reserved for “organic” mass spectrometry, such as the high-resolution Orbitrap mass …

Application Of Artificial Neural Network Algorithms For Irrigation Scheduling, Lisa Umutoni
All Dissertations
Neural networks have been extensively used in predicting soil water tension for improved irrigation scheduling and management. However, their lack of interpretability constrains their efficacy in grasping the nuanced patterns prevalent in soil water tension time series data. The first goal of this research was to develop interpretable deep neural network models for soil water tension prediction across multiple soil depths (0.15m, 0.3m, 0.46m and 0.6m) and prediction horizons (1h, 6h, and 12h). The Neural Hierarchical Interpolation for Time Series (N-HiTS) and Neural Basis Expansion Analysis Time Series (N-BEATS) models were used in this research. Historical soil water tension data …
Modeling Disaster Resilience Through A Human-Centered Lens: Exposure, Vulnerability And Adaptation, Tong Liu
Modeling Disaster Resilience Through A Human-Centered Lens: Exposure, Vulnerability And Adaptation, Tong Liu
All Dissertations
The core of reframing and operationalizing disaster resilience with a human-centered lens is to incorporate concepts from socio-ecological resilience into engineering resilience to better understand the humans’ capability for disaster adaptation. Existing studies have drawn practical implications by identifying actionable thresholds for infrastructure systems under disasters, which can be easily applied by policymakers, emergency managers and municipal agencies. However, how individuals interact with, respond to, or adapt under these infrastructure thresholds remain understudied. This hinders the operationalization of disaster resilience at the human scale.
First, I examined exposure by analyzing how configuration and distribution of urban infrastructure systems, such as …
Unsupervised Deep Learning For Video Restoration, Mary Damilola Aiyetigbo
Unsupervised Deep Learning For Video Restoration, Mary Damilola Aiyetigbo
All Dissertations
In today's digital era, visual data is vital across several domains such as medical diagnostics, scientific imaging, surveillance, and entertainment. However, video data often suffers from degradations like noise, blur, compression artifacts, and low resolution, which degrade quality and downstream usability. Video restoration aims to recover clean, high-fidelity video from such corrupted inputs. Unlike static images, video restoration must maintain temporal consistency across frames, making it a significantly more complex problem. While supervised deep learning methods have achieved state-of-the-art results, they typically require large datasets of paired noisy-clean video datasets that are scarce or impractical to obtain in real-world settings …
Homomesies And Toggleability Spaces, Alec Mertin
Homomesies And Toggleability Spaces, Alec Mertin
All Dissertations
We study the homomesy phenomenon under the rowmotion operator acting on order ideals of posets. We provide details for the extensions of several results in the literature concerning homomesies of toggleability statistics from finite to infinite orbits, which allows us to obtain homomesies for piecewise-linear and birational rowmotion, even in the case of infinite orbits. Integral to this is a novel generalization of a result in the literature, which relaxes the conditions needed to lift a statistic.
We completely describe the order ideal (resp. antichain) toggleability space for general fences: the space of statistics which are linear combinations of …

Collecting Human Subject Data For Modeling Maximum Potential Power At Specific Cadence And Fatigue Levels, Alexander John Minnich
Honors College Theses
The overarching goal of this research project was to investigate the relationship between a participant's maximum power (Watts) at a given cadence (RPM) on a specific fatigue level. Before conducting any experiments, we hypothesized that maximum power and cadence would decay linearly with fatigue. To do this, six days of testing for each of 4 human subjects were split across two phases. The first 4 days were devoted to Phase one, which focuses on determining the physical abilities of each unique participant and finding metabolic constants such as Critical Power and Anaerobic Work Capacity. Phase two then tests maximal power …

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, farm real estate (land and buildings) accounted for 82.8% of total US farm sector assets in 2022, consequently making land the largest source of wealth in a farmer’s investment portfolio and the primary source of collateral used for farm operating loans. The Southeastern region of the United States has seen rapid farmland appreciation and intense population growth in recent years. This research investigates the rising farmland prices across the Southeast from both a regional and state-level perspective. Chapter Two …
Modeling Dna Repair In Escherichia Coli Using A Boolean And Stochastic Framework, Gabrianne Ivey
Modeling Dna Repair In Escherichia Coli Using A Boolean And Stochastic Framework, Gabrianne Ivey
All Theses
DNA can be damaged through both internal and external sources. Therefore, cells have created methods to repair DNA damage. In Escherichia coli, the system responsible for DNA repair is termed the SOS response. This system consists of more than 50 genes and contains three main repair pathways: nucleotide excision repair, translesion synthesis, and homologous recombination. The response is initiated when DNA lesions result in the accumulation of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). The protein RecA is activated by binding to ssDNA and is then denoted RecA*. RecA* assists in the auto-cleavage of LexA which is the primary repressor protein involved in …
Performance Of Inline Compression With Software Caching For Reducing The Memory Footprint In Pysdc, Emily Lattanzio
Performance Of Inline Compression With Software Caching For Reducing The Memory Footprint In Pysdc, Emily Lattanzio
All Theses
The volume of data required for High Performance Computing (HPC) applications is growing faster than the memory storage available to store the required data, leading to performance bottlenecks in transferring data. Whether sending data from main memory to computation nodes or between parallel processes during runtime, the more data there is to send, the longer it will take to for that data to be sent from one location to the next. Hence the need for inline data compression, which reduces the amount of allocated memory needed by storing the largest data structures in a compressed format and decompressing/recompressing single variables …

Modular construction adopts a manufacturing-like construction process, enhancing the management of embodied carbon emissions in production and construction phases. However, estimating these emissions presents challenges due to the involvement of diverse stakeholders across various lifecycle stages. Additionally, cost considerations often influence design choices and material selections in modular constructions, neglecting the impact of embodied carbon emissions. To address these challenges, we present a proof-of-concept for an automated Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based system to estimate both carbon emissions and construction costs. This system automates the calculation of embodied carbon and cost implications of different modular designs and materials, enabling informed decision-making. …
Evaluation Of High Temperature Borehole Heat Exchangers For Thermal Energy Storage, Robert J. Mcdaniel
Evaluation Of High Temperature Borehole Heat Exchangers For Thermal Energy Storage, Robert J. Mcdaniel
All Theses
The development of renewable power sources like solar panels and wind turbines is crucial to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and slowing the increase in global temperature. These sources are limited by the intermittency of power output depending on factors such as weather or time of day. Storing energy during periods of peak productivity improves the efficiency of renewable sources and makes them more competitive with fossil fuels. The excess energy can be stored underground as heat. At high enough temperatures (>150ºC) and discharge rates (>70 kW) the stored energy can be converted back into electricity. This turns the …

Evaluating Climate Benefits In The Conservation Reserve Program: Methane Emissions And Carbon Storage In Restored Wetlands, Annika Kuleba
Evaluating Climate Benefits In The Conservation Reserve Program: Methane Emissions And Carbon Storage In Restored Wetlands, Annika Kuleba
All Theses
As climate change progresses, Nature-based Climate Solutions (NbCS) have emerged as a key strategy for mitigation. Historically, wetlands were drained to increase arable land area, resulting in habitat degradation and soil erosion. To address these issues, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) incentivizes wetland restoration under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), in which landowners retire agricultural land to reestablish native habitat. Although wetlands can act as carbon sinks, they are also sources of methane, a more potent greenhouse gas (GHG). Therefore, the effectiveness of wetlands as a NbCS remains under debate due to assumed high methane emissions. Wetland functions …

Novel Methods For Assessing And Prioritizing Road-Stream Crossings For Aquatic Organism Passage, Lesley E. Twiner
Novel Methods For Assessing And Prioritizing Road-Stream Crossings For Aquatic Organism Passage, Lesley E. Twiner
All Theses
Anthropogenic barriers such as dams and culverts have led to riverine habitat fragmentation and decreased fish diversity worldwide. Low-head structures such as culverts are far more abundant than large dams and may have a larger cumulative impact on river connectivity. Many efforts to inventory road crossing barriers and prioritize removal and restoration efforts do not consider temporal variation in flow. We used cameras to gain continuous water level monitoring data to quantify the relationship between precipitation events and outlet drop height. In the spring of 2024, we selected 25 culvert sites in upstate South Carolina and set up cameras to …
Efficient Solvers And Anderson Acceleration For The Bingham Equations, Victoria L. Fisher
Efficient Solvers And Anderson Acceleration For The Bingham Equations, Victoria L. Fisher
All Theses
This work studies two techniques utilized to solve the Bingham equations that model viscoplastic flow. An Uzawa-type iterative procedure is first analyzed and tested for poor convergence of velocity and stress. We apply Anderson acceleration (AA) to this method and show improved convergence rates for both velocity and stress. A solver utilizing regularization is introduced, and AA is also applied to display better convergence results. We propose a new method that combines these two solvers and applies Anderson acceleration.
